-same face syndrome (e.i. AS, AE, Fairyland sorry) -expressionless sculpts (not matter how you do the faceup, I'm outtie) -"piano" hands: where the doll has piano hands positions but their promo pictures are like vampires or centaurs and doesn't include a picture of them playing piano omg
I have to agree with the giant boobs thing... It's an immediate turn-off for me. Even when I really like everything else about a doll. I don't know why, but they just never look "right" to me. But everyone likes different things.
My biggest turn-off is overly sweet, generic face sculpts. Don't get me wrong, some sculpts are SO beautiful, but they simply don't hold my interest. It gets to the point that many start to look the same to me. Also, very, very large busts.
Very thin and small nose except on anime style dolls and i am not like weak chin on boy and girl dolls
Hmmm, my biggest turn off would be head sculpts that are just....plain. When they're so similar to each other that you can't tell them apart unless you're a diehard, life-long loyalty kinda fan. I don't know, I mostly have this issue with Minifees, they all look the same and most seem to have the same faceups in different colors and it's just......boring, to me at least. They look TOO put together, TOO perfect, and it ultimately comes off as bland to me. Another thing, that isn't really a turn off but is something that really does make it harder for me to want to buy a doll, is if the company doesn't offer tan when I want tan for the doll. For instance, I want an Only Kids Loong Dragon who's supposed to be Arab, but the company doesn't offer any tan resin colors whatsoever. So, I'll have to get him in white, and dye him. I HATE the thought of dyeing dolls, but so far I've got like 3-4 on my wishlist I'm going to have to dye or change the color of, it's annoying and it makes me not want to go for these dolls sometimes.
Not being able to stand on own. I don't expect them to stand long or super solid, but I don't want to have to use a stand just for a photo of a new pair of jeans.
I generally don't like dolls with lots of teeth showing. In real life I love seeing people's teeth when they smile, but on dolls it just doesn't look quite right.
I don't like it when doll makers who do not have a clothing line create bodies are so disproportionate to all other dolls that you can't find a single thing to fit them. I'm no seamstress, so I need at least a little off-the-rack apparel for my crew.
I'm with the "dolls with teeth" crowd. I love Minifee Celine, but her teeth showing throws me off (so if I need a Celine in my life, I'm just going to get a Chloe and mod her eyes to be more open). I've even seen dolls that are full out laughing or smiling so wide you can see more than just the front teeth, and those ones creep me out. Also, for some reason, dolls with anime eyes kind of freak me out. Which is strange, cause I love anime and manga, but those dolls just unnerve me. And then, every now and then, a doll with a smile will turn me off, too. I prefer more neutral/solemn expressions.
Personally I have a few, more recently I have seen these dolls, not sure what company, but the faces are...rather...well to me it looks like a face someone makes in an adult video. They have their tongues out and their mouths open while looking teary eyed or wincing. Like a yawn face. I don't have anything towards the dolls, i just can't find anything appealing about a doll looking like she was made to be put in a dirty film. Another is dolls with face ups and tattoos/markings that get so heavy, intense and convoluted that you can't even make out the doll's sculpt anymore. Don't get me wrong full designed dolls are beautiful, i am just put off by the ones that look so heavily designed that it becomes a clustered ugly mess, with layer after layer of paint and face up added.
I like a variety of styles, but my one big turn-off is huge and/or heavily sculpted lips. Some dolls kind of look like they have a cupid's bow on both the top and bottom lip, like a four-leaf clover sort of shape. Or their top lip has such a severe cupid's bow, it's more zig-zaggy than Wario's mustache. I used to really dislike dolls with teeth, but I've changed my mind about that in recent years.
As some others have mentioned: gigantic breasts squeezed together breasts too large lips super-red lipstick
There are time I'll be drooling over a doll or some well-made clothes, mentally listing the things I want to get, budgeting accordingly... Then I see the website doesn't have a security symbol. Which is most of the doll shops I encounter. >_<
I too, really dislike the girly effeminate heads on male muscular bodies. I am always on the lookout for a male head that is actually masculine. I want to see a strong jawline, but those don't seem to exist. Jana
I have no problem with feminine heads on male bodies in general, pretty boys are nice to look at, but yes, the bit that peeves me is when their heads do not match their bodies at all. Hormone levels vary from person to person but the amounts you need for a certain body type should also influence the face, and in live humans it almost always does. Fat distribution and bone structure, proportions and shapes, are heavily dictated by various hormones, so there's certain face types you generally do not get with certain bodies- the entire body is connected to the head.
Weird elongated giraffe like necks. The kind of puckered lips like they've been sucking on lemons lol.
I hate those "balls for tits" most dols have. I think its a mold issue, to get the body out of the mold well. But i will not reject a doll for it. Dremel and sandpaper..... Non of my girls still have their original breasts, they are all shaped according to pictures of real woman.
When a doll doesn't come with (a lot of) optional parts like different hand options. I like to change the pose of my doll frequently so I need at least a little bit of variety^^
Too big breasts, facial expressions that are too specific (like the Angel Philia with her tongue out, a crying doll, or a huge smile with visible teeth), and most of all SD sizes. It's way too big for me. Sadly there are amazing SD dolls but I will never buy them
My biggest turn offs are: large breasts, I really prefer the pear shape and I find big boobs on my dolls (for some reason this doesn't apply to other peoples' dolls, I have no problem appreciating the beauty in their large boobs) to be obnoxious and not very attractive. Straight bodies. I want my dolls to have curves and/or an interesting shape, not just like a stick. And pretty much any boy doll. I don't know what it is, but I just really dislike every boy doll I've seen. (But maybe one day I'll find the one)
The position that a doll is, is it good quality or bad. I also cares on about the doll face ups, If face up doesn't attracts me, I won't buy it, unless I can change the face up to a better move.
My turn offs are for sure too big of a chest x.x that's just over doing it and really not appealing to me in any way. Also the facial expressions on that one sculpt of Unoa with the open mouth (forgive me I do not know much about the sculpt or the name) kinda gross me out. Or to be honest, any over dramatic facial expression.
Wide open mouth, specific expression of a face ( mad or crying or wampire or like AngelPhillia have), sleepy eyes joined with high placed eyebrows which gaves that "on drugs" face. Too big eyeholes, unproportionally to the rest of a face, taking a half of a head, too small mouth with that weird sth like bambicrony have, too big boobs like a joined balls, too straight body - doll needs to look good naked, not like a piece of wood with sticks in place of arms and legs. I don't accept any extra parts - extra face under the hair, extra arms going from the back, totally off with everything is Pashapasha. No gore, no piercing, no big tatoos everywhere - dolls from mp. Need to see a blank head always to check if the doll without a makeup looks good and what I can do with her. And sometimes - like recently - I just need to get my grail doll to my hansd to find out that 3 years of dreaming about her were a waste of time - body movement and that "something" was that turn off with her and I had to sold her immediately. Very long list but I find buying a doll not so easy when I want to avoid these things. Oh, and a price. Over 600$ is a greed, not a fair price for something made in more than one copy.
- Wonky animal anatomy. Stuff like mermaid tails with evident knees/calves/butts, or centaurs with non-stylized, incorrect horse halves. Cartoony is fine. - Faces that are super expressive. I love the sculpts, but I can't imagine owning a doll that constantly looks like it's yelling, crying, sticking its tongue out, etc. I prefer neutral faces. - Droopy/melty looking faces? I'm not a huge fan of the style Angel Philia or Doll Pamm do for some of their faces (which sucks because I love their bodies honestly.) When I got my first doll, I would have also said "giant unnatural breasts" but I think they have their place; as long as the rest of the body is in the same hentai-ish aesthetic, I don't mind.
OMG, yes! The main problem is that the muscles are super-defined. I prefer bodies like Volks SDGr, or the old Supergem: A little muscle-tone, but not Arnold Schwarzenegger in disguise. Not everyone has time to spend every day in the gym for six hours.
There's a few things that I'd rather keep out of my collection! - Pointy power nipples. They poke through clothes, they stare me in the face, and they're...well. Pointy. - Exceptionally long/ornate elf ears. I’m rough with my dolls, so I know they won’t last. Instant pass. - 3 piece torsos with limited movement. Why have a 3 piece torso if you can’t even cock the hips or slouch? Lies! Scandal! Begone! - Gummy hotdog fingers. I’m used to my dolls slapping themselves across the face. I’d prefer if the hand that chipped the faceup at least looked great doing it. - Teeny tiny eyes. Looks neat sometimes, but I’m about the bug-eyed life. - Wide wide frog-like mouths with droopy, exaggerated lips. Now, the fun: trying to find a doll that has all of these going for it...
Really muscular male bodies! I don't have as much interest in male BJDs but I think that's partly because most male bodies are so unrealistic and weird-looking to me. I prefer more realistic and gentle-looking bodies in general.
Escaflowne noses. (Lol at least that's what I call them) The first example that comes to my mind is Dikadoll's boy Edime; at first I really fell in love with him, I swear I was about to buy him, but then I saw his nose in profile and... nope. I can't stand those super pointy noses with arched bridges, they ruin the whole doll's head in my opinion which makes me really sad because for a couple of weeks I truly thought that Edime was going to be my first doll :v
One piece torso... drives me nuts. Another major turn off is small SD heads. 8" circumference heads seem an awkward SD size to me... had to sell my little Monica sarubia because of her head size. Sometimes the head can be a perfect 8-9 or 9-10 but with a super tiny face, which looks odd on a SD body with a standard neck width. My peakswoods girls were not blending in with my other SD girls for that reason.
Only two for me really. Crying dolls. That Mona doll makes me all kinds of uncomfortable. Not a fan of open mouthed dolls either. 'Art' bodies. I don't know what else to call them; that DC style of elongated/extra limbs, odd bumps and horns, tiny squished faces with pouty lips. I appreciate what went into them but they're just too off-putting for me. I like dolls that have a regular old boring human body.
It really bothers me when a dolls nose is too small. I don't know why but somehow I just can't appreciate a sculpt anymore once I notice it's nose isn't quite right.
I prefer slim and slender looking head sculpt more than chubby and round sculpt. I consider them as cute but the proportion of their head tends to be too big for the body for my taste, and that's my immediate no. I've seen so many beautiful photo of dolls with big head but I believe I could never pull off a good customisation on any of them.
My biggest turn off is dolls that are just blandly pretty. Also dolls with super defined muscles. Eugh
Hmmmm... I have a few: - Bobble heads! This actually didn't bother me in the past (my first doll is bobble-headed), but now it drives me crazy! Just makes the doll feel off-balance and kind of... immature, I guess? - Eyes where the lower lid is "downturned". I really don't know how to describe it properly, but it's a certain eye shape I see a lot, especially with Volks. - Like many others, faces that really can only do one expression. I think Fairyland's PongPong is an exception, though. - Art dolls. They're fascinating to look at, but just not for me.
The only real turnoff for me is unhappy looking dolls. There is enough real drama in life without celebrating fake sadness. I'm also not into bland faces. I like seeing soul when I look at dolls.
joints that serve no purpose cause they can't hold it regardless of sueding or wiring same face syndrome
1. Flat soles of feet. It's not like they stand any better in my experience, most of my dolls that can actually stand for more than half a second are actually the ones with nicely sculpted soles. No, I don't have a foot fetish, lol, I just appreciate details. 2. Endowed dolls, girls with huge breasts and males with particularly large genitals. For me, this is more about the issues I have with dressing them. 3. Orange 'tans'. I love my orange DZ Benjamin unconditionally, but I wouldn't opt for that colour again from a company that I know of who turns out the 'bottle tans', as I call them.
-Big breasts that jut straight out from the body. Any overly big breasts, but I dislike those the most. -Extreme anime. Huge eyes and pointy chins that give them an alien look. -Pointy chins on dolls that aren’t extreme anime, especially with tiny, thin lips. I don’t like thin lips in general. I didn’t think I like full lips, but find I am drawn to some, although I don’t like it when they are over emphasized. -Faces that are too ‘perfect.' I think this is one reason I don’t like most boy dolls. I don’t have a desire to have a boy doll, but I really don’t even like many of them, because they are way too buff and pretty to be interesting. Same for girl dolls that are too realistic and pretty. -Ugly feet. It is hard to find BJDs with pretty feet, so I am fine with less-than-beautiful feet, but my Unoa Lusis looks like she has the beginnings of bunions and other major foot problems. Right out of the box that was the first thing I noticed, and was like, “Oh…” Actually, I don’t really like the Unoa body at all. Her torso joint is so floppy it might as well not even be there. Seems to be lacking a hinge to allow it to stay in place, and I don’t know if there is much I could do about that. Maybe sueding? I do love her face, but having a few dolls now has made me realize that a face is not enough for me to love a doll for any length of time.( Sorry this became a mini-critique of Unoa.) -Cankles, although I think I read that they are necessary for stability for larger dolls? I can live with them to a certain extent, but it makes me want to put leg warmers on them, and I am not a fan of a flashdance sort of look. Not what I am striving for around here. -Tongues sticking out, too many teeth showing, winking eyes, most dreaming faces, and other features that no one would hold for any length of time. Dreaming faces always look stoned to me, and I don’t really want a zoned out doll any more than I wanted my kids to sit around looking like that. And I don’t think anyone over the age of maybe 10 should stick their tongue out anyway, and certainly not sit around like that all the time. Same goes for dolls with the look of bliss. No one is that happy all the time. Neutral expressions are better and more versatile. -Dolls that won’t sit well. I like them to be able to stand for a minute, but I am okay with them not standing well for a long period of time. That is not how they are going to spend the majority of their time. They will be sitting a lot, and I would like for them to look nice when I pass by. I especially don’t want them to be slumped over like poor Lusis.
I feel you on the orange tan. I've been trying to find nice colours for some of my POC dolls and they are all super jersey shore orange!
Well, though I do not collect female dolls myself I can appreciate them. One thing that really puts me off from buying them is when their breast are kinda,.. really oddly sculpted I guess? More round and they look like lumps on the chest. I do know that most are meant to look like they are being pushed up or together by a bra, but it is something that tends to make me look away.
what i don't like... normal pretty face. i learned that i like faces that have a little quirkiness to them. & chunky body... i don't mind shapes, thin, plump, long legs, short legs, big small boobs, pear shapes, as long as the are nicely sculpted. not like chunky pieces put together...
I hate heads that look squished, with big eyes and small mouths and short chins, or have disproportionate features that are bigger than their face allows for... coughs at DDH-01 and Minifees, which are dolls that I like modded but not unmodded. Overly wide mouths creep me out a bit too.
I dont like eyes that are too wide apart and small, i hate very tiny lips too! I like nice lips esp rosenlied tuesday girls.
- useless joints (my DollLeaves MSD boy has ‘mobility thighs’ of which I don’t know their purpose) - boobs that are shaped like spheres cut in half and glued to the chest (I prefer natural shaped boobs no matter which size) - huge penises (honestly, how should I store the package...?) - very bad promo photos (that’s just sad, actually) - difficult hybridizing reputation (I hybridized a lot, and knowing it’s difficult or the options are just a few, I know I won’t buy the doll) - single-jointed arms (I have a few dolls with single-jointed arms and I more and more notice that it’s so sad...)
Like so many others have said, BREASTS! The comical sort. The ones that are big for the sake of being big and don't even come close to hanging like a normal breast should. I'm perfectly fine with large breasts on a doll, as long as they're not straight up orbs. It looks ridiculous. Also, chubby baby faces. I'm a bit on the fence about childlike faces, but I tend to like them. Except the ones with big puffy cheeks. I like small dolls a lot, but so many of them are too babyish for my taste. Painted on 2D fangs also bug the hell out of me.
"Skinny" MSDs like Minifees, don't really know what people see in them, I prefer my dolls to have a substantial, weighty feel to them as I'm trying to perfectly emulate the Victorian Porcelain Companion dolls of old, Skinny-type dolls just remind me too much of fashion-dolls, so pass! I also don't like small eyes on dolls or "grown-up" looking girl dolls, just takes the whole cuteness factor out of it. Vinyl and too anime or "plastic" looking is a pretty big turnoff too. Give me a resin doll that looks and fits perfectly with the Victorian Porcelain dolls of old, pls and thx! Oh and also long/big pointy noses! Don't want a Pinocchio in my collection thankyouverymuch! Weirdly proportioned dolls (small heads on large bodies, or only the bottom half of the doll is large) won't do either.
Big turn off when body proportions aren't making any justice. Also body aesthetics. I've been having a hard time picking a body to reshell my son but alas, all sculpts that are 65cm range is so muscular, and I just could not.
That's funny, I've actually been hunting for the perfect, orb shaped breast body for one of my floating heads. It has a highly limited face up that reminds me of fancy dress balls back in the day when corsets made breasts look ridiculous, and I'm looking for something that will give that look. Not normally my cup of tea, but for the clothes she will be wearing, it will be quite appropriate. I cannot stand emaciated bodies. That is an automatic turn off for me. Also it is very rare that an opened mouth sculpt does not creep me out. There's something about the way most companies just have the two top front teeth sticking out between the lips that unsettles me.
The body that immediately come to mind is FairyLand's FairyLine 60. Whenever I see them they make me recall renaissance paintings of women strung up in corsets, which makes sense now that I look at the company photos. That's what they're wearing, haha.
I think the scary dolls are interesting to look at in pictures, but as silly as it sounds, I don't think I'd want to sleep with one in my room! I prefer the more realistic looking dolls to the anime faces. One thing that I keep seeing on faceup videos is when they put those little dark dots in the outside corners of the doll's mouth. I don't like that. I'm sure it is for emphasis or contouring, but I don't like the way it looks.
At first my turn-off where big boobs, too. But then I ordered Minifee Ria with those baloons and now these melons are part of her story and give room for some laughs, when I think about how they could be in her way, if she needs to fight xD :P! But to get back to the topic: my turn-off now are sometimes hands, sometimes joints and most of the time it's the face. I think the face of the doll is the most important thing on one and when the face has something I can't deal with, I won't buy it.
Mouths are extremely important to me--a lot of my grail dolls are smiley, and there's still a few that I'm considering that aren't, but I can't stand the look of puckered up lips! And some opened mouthed looks are fine, but there's quite a number of them out there that immediately turns me away...and then there are just the really odd ones in general. I can change the general expression of a doll with eyebrows, but I'm not skilled enough to mod a mouth, and that's a big player in what expression your doll will have! "Delicate" looking bodies bother me too, or "straight" bodies, if that's the way to describe them? The ones that just look like a stick. They just look so...stiff... And elf ears. I prefer having kemonomimi styled dolls and elf ears are harder to hide/sticks out way more, eheh.
Very very "anime" faces - as in, kind of moe, the eyes aren't shaped very realistically (where they're almost square shaped? if that makes sense). SUPER SKINNY. And I feel like this is a big one for me, and informs why I rarely want most BJDs. I think if certain parts are very skinny BUT it's part of an interesting stylization or exaggeration, then that's fine. The one I'm trying to create has a tiny waist, so it's not that they can't be skinny. I just get bored seeing the same very thin frame over and over. And I'll second the balloon breasts. They look silly.
When I saw my fist pukipuki in person, I was enamored of the adorable size and posability. I have firmly banned myself from getting dolls under 20cm due to the difficulty of sewing in so small a scale, and fear of losing said dolls.
