@Littlepandauoo I'm not sure of matches off of the top of my head, but Dollstown dolls are cast by Dollshe so Dollshe's tans will match up. Dollshe's also a little more popular, so if you look for colors matching those, you should be able to get some hits in the reference section here or on flickr.
Oooh what a great thread! ö I think there need to be loads more Afro looking beauty's! Galaxy princess by Hasel-Anne van Stormbroek, on Flickr This is my Enitan ^^
This is my impldoll in anti uv tan skin :-) dont know if she looks really african american maybe more like Indian girl :-)
Hello everyone... I'm surprised that no one here has mentioned Zuri by MerryDollRound. She was produced in three different colors: Milk Chocolate (look at my profile pic), Chocolate and Dark Cocoa. MerryDollRound made it a point to sculpt her based on actual photos of AA people. And as of right now, she's sculpting a Pygmy size AA doll based on a young AA child. I've been watching her live streams on Instagram and her new doll, named Bunyol, is AMAZING! And she'll be offered in the same three chocolate colors mentioned before. Seriously, this doll will be incredible. You should definitely check out Zuri SD by MerryDollRound. You will not be disappointed!

I have been successful at matching heads to bodies using pastels. It's best for the head to be on the lighter side, but not always necessary. If you will be using an artist, they may do it for you??
I really need to add a beautiful dark skinned lady to my collection. I look forward to browsing through this discussion for inspiration!
I'm waiting for my Summerbird Viola, but she's shelling an African American teenager. I have her on a dollmore body, it's not my favourite but it does match nicely to the lighter Summerbird tan (cool soft brown).
I've not heard of this company before, @A Wee Tiefling, but thank you for talking about it. I just came from the site, and I really like the body this doll has, it look very realistic, curve-wise. I'm interested! Please show her off once you get her! Ryu
It's good to see a thread like this! I've been on the hunt for authentic-looking person of color sculpts. It seems like, even in 2020, they're quite difficult to come by. Mars is almost what I have in mind for a character, but a little too.. handsomely chiseled? He may still work for the idea, but I'd prefer a rounder face.
This is such a problem. I like realistic faces, and in that department, it's even more difficult than finding a lovely brown resin!
Iplehouse has some dolls that would look great as POCs. Some of them have the proper features and come in different resin colors, I would give them a definite look. I think it was Aaliyah that, when she came out, everyone said she looked like Beyonce. Ryu
Ahh glad to find this thread. I’d love a female BJD with African features to shell a character of mine. Twigling Nkiru in raw umber would be perfect but think I’ve missed my chance on that one; can only hope there’s a re-release some day.
So my gorgeous tan Echium, Mo, has been in his box for a couple of weeks and when I finally got him out I decided to showcase his perfect face. Look at those liiiips! I had to colour correct this image a LOT due to the underlying red tint in Spiritdoll resin. He's actually a uniform and deep sienna.
I wish more of my gang had faceups. I'll grab a group pic and post it here anyway (pardon doll nudity and blankness in advance as I'm still working on dusting off my collection). I have an Iple Aaliyah on the way - whom I'm pretty sure is based on Aaliyah (the singer) when she appeared as Akasha in the movie Queen of the Damned. Mine is the human version, and she's shelling my favourite childhood doll - a Magic Attic Club Keisha. It was hard to find pretty black dolls when I was a kid, and it's still hard to find them now so I'm excited to really double down on promoting them. I also just impulse bought a Mirodoll Mika. I typically don't like the sculpts from Mirodoll, but she had black features and I couldn't resist. 1/3 Girl Mika [Mika] - $120.00 : Miro Doll
@Teruchan, Mirodoll Mika is so darn cute! Did you get the default face-up? To me she looks like a sassy little sister to Iplehouse's old YID Cocori
@beamlette I didn't, but it's cute! I like to paint them myself though since I go in for a realistic style faceup. When I need inspiration I just look in the mirror lol. But I love love love her deep chocolatey resin tone. I need more dark-toned dolls in my collection!
I don't know if these have been suggested, but: Dollshe has a wide range of human-skin tones (and non human), from very pale white to super-dark brown and black. honey skin, pure skin Angela & Owen are currently on sale right now too Angela (6G CLASSIC MAXI - 35cm) - Special package - DollShe craft Owen (8B CLASSIC MAXI - 39cm) - Special package - DollShe craft
If you email Twigling, she’d probably do it for you! I’m one day hoping I can get a raw umber oryx that way!
Thanks . I did email her the other week and she said she’s planning another release at some stage, so that’s exciting news! Hope you can get your Oryx - such a gorgeous sculpt.
Oh that’s exciting. I’m in the obsidian preorder, so I’m broke as heck for the next little while! Hopefully I have savings again when Raw Umber comes back. I missed an oryx second hand who was absolutely beautiful in it.
This thread is really interesting! I have a classydoll type 2 in very dark color (black n°2, if I remember well the color name), and she has no body since I use hers for an other head. Do you have any idea of what body might fit her? She needs a small SD body, as she is very little for a SD head. I would kill for a Bimong dandelion body in the right color, but I don't know if it is going to happen one day. Here is the head:
Here is my dark brown FID Aaliyah that arrived yesterday. Her wig reminds me of Tyra, I think I want to get something darker for her. Box Opening Iplehouse FID Aaliyah by Skyealloway, on Flickr
I am in LOVE. Oh my - I just bought another one myself - an Argodoll girl in this type of dark resin! She has a curvy body type too, and I'm SO excited about it. I was quite disappointed with my Mika (she's sort of an ashy purpley colour that I now need to tan to something decent.) AND my Iple Aaliyah. She came in a really light brown colour that doesn't fit the character at all. Her sculpt is beautiful, but I'm really disappointed. I also didn't know that Dollshe was a) this inexepensive(!?) and b) offering so many sculpt choices and colours!! This is going to be a rather... tight month for my finances me thinks.
Thank you @iamkathybrown for the suggestion ! Well, Island doll is an idea, even if I would perfer a body a little more little. @Teruchan Thank you! Maybe she will have a body one day XD
The very first dark skin bjd I fell in love years ago, was Tobi in chocolate tan, MSD size. I still look for her everywhere! I really love the rich dark color Kaye Wiggs chose. Must confess there are plenty of other sculpts I love, but Tobi has a cute, cartoonish face that has an effect on me
Bringing back a comatose thread! Where does everyone get their wigs from? I have Iplehouse Aaliyah and want to get her some braids or dreads. Most of what I've found looks shit.
I made Adrastos' wig with wefted wool sewn into a wig cap. It took a long time, but I'm super happy with how it turned out. Ryu
@AhhTheHorror I have a few handmade alpaca wigs where the maker retained the natural curl, it does a good job looking realistic and textured (but they can get pricey). Loose alpaca wigs are a bit easier to style and texturize
