Repair Staining and Vinyl Bodies: Care and cleaning of the Dollfie Dream and Obitsu body

Sep 22, 2004

    1. Hi!

I'm about to paint my DD's face with Liquitex acrylics. What should I keep around to remove mistakes so that nothing gets stained? (If you have brand names in mind, please let me know!) What should I be careful _not_ to use?

      Thanks!!

    2. I always use non-acetone nail polish remover (watered down if you want to be extra careful) Then after wash the area down after you use it. Hope that helps!

    3. I searched on this, but couldn't find what I was looking for. If I overlooked something in my search, please let me know.

I am getting a white DD2 body from Volks and I know the vinyl stains more easily than resin. I was just wondering if there are ways to prevent the staining? I know a lot of you have hybrid dolls with DD bodies that are gorgeous and unstained. Does coating them help? Do you wash their clothes in vinegar? Or just change their clothes regularly? Any advice would be appreciated. :)

    4. I coated my DD body with MSC. ^^

    5. Definitely coat the body, and line clothes in muslin or white fabric if possible. I also line the knit clothes for my vinyl bodies, using a flesh colored mesh.

    6. Vinegar only works on natural fibers, such as 100% cotton or wool, but not on synthetics.
Coat the doll like people suggested, but the coating wears off over time, especially at the joints and also if you redress the doll often. You can clean coated dolls with Mr. Clean spong, but don't use alcohol or finger nail polish cause that will remove the coating.
If all else fails, wrap your doll in plastic wrap in the areas that the clothing will touch.
If you get a deep stain in the vinyl, then use a Benzoil Peroxide based acne med to remove it. Dab a thick coat on the spot and leave in the sun all day, if that doesn't do the trick, reapply and do it again the next day until the stain is gone. The sun won't hurt the doll as long as you don't do this for months on end. I've done this on fragile vintage Barbies that have had the stains on them for 30 years, with no damage to the doll and the stain were totally gone.

    7. you know, I bet some people over at http://www.milkshakemelody.com/forum/ might be able to give you some good advice too, since most 1/6 are done in vinyl. I wish I could give you good advice, but I'm not sure. it can be really bad though if your vinyl stains! I remember I had a gene doll that stained... I was never able to fully remove it.

    8. Mods If this is in the wrong place, please feel free to move it.

I was wondering if I can sand my DD1 body. She has some slight staining on her knee joint. I want to just touch it up with some light sanding on just the top of the joint. Will this ruin the vinyl? Thanks :)

    9. Because of the nature of vinyl, I'd worry that the stain had been absorbed and would be deeper than just the surface. I've been told that certain acne creams can take stains out, but I don't see why you can't use a barbie or vinyl cleaner on your doll. Perhaps some one better versed in the fashion doll world would have better info about either of those.

I don't think you'd ruin the vinyl, but you may have some texture problems that be more difficult to fix than a few tiny stains.

    10. My DD body is dirty dirty... a dress has dyied all my little girl's body and I can't clean it... what can I do?

      Thanks

    11. Dye? Oh man I know where you stand, I have some leather stains on my girl... Someone told me you can mix toothpaste, baking soda and bleach, then with an old brush scrub her down.
It worked well on getting dirt stains off of her that the Mr. Clean Magick Eraser couldn't. But not the leather stains...

But you can also try the eraser.

Also if you try the first one don't let it settle too much or it may dis-color her.
I didn't have problems but I rinsed her a lot because I didn't want to take the chance.

    12. First off, give her a good scrubbing with the magic eraser. After that, the best method for cleaning vinyl stains is to use zit cream (I use ZapZit). Just make sure it's a clear or white cream with a 10% benzoyl peroxide solution.

Apply the cream on the stains and place your girl's body under a lamp or in sunlight, checking on her every couple of hours. When the cream dries, rinse it off and apply a fresh layer.

Cleaning stains off of vinyl is a long process; don't expect her to be clean right away. The last time I got stains on vinyl, it took a week or two to remove them. Once you've got the stains out, I really recommend you coat your doll. I use Mr. Top Coat, which works really well on vinyl, or you can use MSC, or Testor's DullCote. Good luck!!

    13. Oooh, would that work on the leather stains as well? I have black stains which I think would be more permanent than other colors..

    14. I've never had any leather stains to clean, but it's always done the trick for me when I've had stained vinyl.

    15. Hi sweetie , I had a brand new DD body that a navy dress stained from the tips of her fingers to her toes
it was horrific , she was ruined
nothing would get the stain out
I bought something called Remove Zit from Twin Pines

its uS Company ..its a very strong product and smells terrible
you cover the stain and leave the doll in a darkeded room or cubbord for a few days
it took a week , and I had to apply twice , but it got ever tiny speck off

for resin I use 911 from the same company

      edit
      link to company
      http://www.twinpines.com/

    16. I got permant marker on my baby.
and..i managed to get it off right away by dampening it and rubbing it with my finger, than scrubbing for eternity with a magic eraser X_X

but..i dono how to help you..

    17. I am looking at an Obitsu on ebay, to get for my daughter for x-mas. The only problem is, her feet are stained from faulty navy socks.

Now, since it will be from Santa, it needs to look good. Can you remove this coloring from the dolls feet? or am I better off just buying a brand new one?

(mods, if this is in the wrong spot, can you please move it)

      Thanks!

    18. I remember reading that for vynl if you put spot cream on the stain and leave the doll in a sunny window for a few days it will help with stains

    19. I read you need to get a zit removal creme like Oxy 10 and treat it, keeping it under a lamp or sun, this process can take several weeks, I've tried with a vinyl head due to a wig stain and it won't work for me.

There's a chance her feet can be cleaned with soap and water though, but it's taking a chance.

Also, you could always already buy clothes for her, have her dressed for Christmas, your daughter may think it was stained due to the socks she had on? I know that sounds mean.. ><

    20. spot cream works briliant :D ive used it on vynal and resin and it works perfectly :)
also whitening toothpaste works on resins i'm sure it works on vynal too :)
also i think parabox will sell replacement feet :)

    21. I've been bad.

I recently recived my first doll, my lovely Lenna, (an Lbust DD (Yumi))
The other day I placed some black stockings on her, I was dumb and didn't wash them first.
Today I pulled them off and of course, I found nasty black stains around her thighs, and lighter ones down her legs and on the bottom of her feet.
I have tried rubbing alochol, and light dish soap.
Dose anyone have any sigestions before I go orange/lemon juice and Apple Vinigar! (or break down crying)

      Thank you:aheartbea

    22. DD are vinyl dolls, you can't clean them like resin :sweat

As for how to solve this, you can probably find an answer in the Customizing section. I know the damage is already done, but Volks is selling new DD body stockings to help prevent against these stains at the Dolpa coming up in a few days. Hopefully you can get one of those for future use :daisy

    23. Sorry to bring up an old thread. However it is a BAD IDEA to sand vinyl. Don't do it. Just don't.

    24. You can try Remove-Zit from Twin Pines. It's well respected for getting even horrible stains out of vinyl.

However, it's pretty expensive. For a light, new stain, I'd recomend cheap acne cream that has benzoyl peroxide as the active ingredient. Put on a thin layer, and leave the doll in a warm spot to sit. I lay a sheet of saran wrap over the stained spot so that the cream doesn't dry before it gets a chance to sink in.

Come back the next day, wipe off the dried cream, and if there's still a stain, put on some new cream and let it sit for another day. 2-3 coatings should get a light stain out.

I guess I should find and edit one of my older posts because once upon a time I thought that it had discolored some of my really badly stained older vinyl dolls. Now I think that they were just grimy, and the discoloration was probably the removal of a fine, even layer of sunken in filth.

edit: No need for a fancy product. A generic bottle or tube should be about $1. Avoid fancy products with scents or "flesh" tone dye.

    25. Oxy 10 ... this really works. You may have to use it more than once and you get better results if you can put the piece with the Oxy right in the sunlight. I have a DD1 body (first doll I bought) and I promptly stained it with the first outfit I made for her. Once you get her clean, wash her good and spray her. I've used the Testors and MSC, if you can get your hands on the MSC, I like the way that feels better. The Testors attracts dust ... and I mean attracts!

    26. I've got a cheap head ( obitsu blank ) that I'm using to gain practice on... my hands still shake a little when painting...
I've used acetone nail polish remover and got a lot of the staining off ( it was black ) I guess I was wondering, how brutal is acetone? Any safer, less abrasive paint remover alternatives?

    27. I'm pretty sure that acetone can be quite bad for your doll, so I wouldn't recommend using it. However, I'm not positive on this count, having never used it on my boy before. The effects people have reported from using it vary, although I choose to be better safe than sorry :P

There is always rubbing alcohol, the kind that you put on cuts to stop them getting infected, which I find gets off most things, unless they have been sealed, in which case you have a lot of elbow-grease to put in. :)

    28. Thanks! I totally forgot about the rubbing stuff as a paint remover.
      :doh

    29. Obitsus are vinyl, so if it has stained you might have a problem. I have heard from another doll fandom that you can use Oxy 10 (yes, the zit stuff) to remove stains from vinyl.

Have a google of some fashion doll customising sites; they might have more tips.

    30. Just a word on acetone...

I used it on about five different doll heads. All different resin tones from different companies. Nothing has happened to them in terms of melting or staining but I have heard a few horror stories about acetone permanently damaging the resin. I would suggest rubbing alcohol as the better option. :daisy

    31. Yup, pimple cream (I've used Clearasil or Oxy 10) works to get stains off vinyl dolls. I'm not sure how bad the stain on your doll is, but I've had pretty nasty clothes stains on vinyl dolls from denim, and also markers. Apply the cream liberally onto stain, and leave it out in the sun or under strong light till it dries/cakes up. Carefully peel/scratch the flakes off after. The stain should lighten. Depending how bad it is, you might have to repeat the application process a few times before it completely disappears. It's not a one application miracle, so be patient if you're using that method!

    32. I hope this is in right place! :sweat
I bought a DDH01 head and a Pink Haired wig...
I never ever got a wig for a DD being that they had rooted heads. Anyways if I put an obitsu wig on her and leave her like that for a long time will the wig dye get on her skin for like? If I wash it? (Mana has a wig and it never stained her and it's brown clolored) Any suggestions? I don't want to stain her!:(

    33. Sometimes if you have a black/dark wig, it can leave some staining.

But you can use ummm. I think the Mr Clean Eraser? Or sometimes even simply some water can take off staining.

Deeper staining can be lightly sanded off.

    34. Hi!
I can tell you, if the wig has a white or beige wig cap inside, it will not stain.
What really stains DD are the Volks dark colored wigs that have a black or dark brown wig cap inside. After a long time on the DD head (2 weeks or longer), the dark wig cap leaves some stains :...(
I have big stains on my Cheryl's head, and small stains on my Kyoko head. :( It's usually the wig cap that stains and not the hair. So if she is wearing a wig, you cannot see the stains, but it's still not very nice.
To prevent staining, you can wash the wig first if its a dark one. I heard that washing it in vinegar helps, I did that to my dark wigs and since then I didn't notice any more staining. You could also use a white head cap in between the head and wig, or line the inside of the wig cap with white fabric.
If the vinyl of the DD gets stained, its very hard to remove. If the stain is fresh, you can wash it off, but if the stain has absorbed in the vinyl, you need to use something that will bleach like oxy10 or other 10% benzyol peroxyde acne medicaiton (clearasil...etc...), apply the cream over the stain, and leave it a few hours in the sunlight.
DD stain very easily, Anything that is black from Volks (wig, clothes, etc..) will stain the DD after 1-2 weeks. I fought it the hard way, and now I am very carefull!! If you want your DD to wear black clothes and wig for pictures, I suggest to remove them after so that they wont stain.

    35. Hi there guys :D!!

I did a search for this and came up with nill, so you'll have to excuse me if this has been asked before o.o

Okies, Dollfie Dream bodies are made of vinyl. I recently purchased one off of the board and adore it. However, she has had her nails done, and i don't particularly care for it. XD What can i use to take the nail polish off that won't damage/ stain her? Can I use 92% rubbing alcohol?

      Thanks everyone!!

    36. I've painted and repainted a few Dollfie Dream bodies and heads...(having one and a few heads myself) And i find that you can use non-acetone nail polish remover to take the paint off (and to clean the dollie up nicely) :D

    37. I recently got a DDII body from the forums here, and she has a stain on her torso. I want to try to use Oxy10 to remove it, but I want to check and see if it is safe to use on a doll that has been blushed and sealed... will it take the blushing off in that spot?

That twinpines stuff says NOT to use it on any area that has been painted or faceup'd. So that stuff is out. Anyone tried the Oxy on a face or blushing?

    38. anyone have any problem with the shoulder joints becoming loose, with the arm swining freely but still posable?? mine has one side that sticks out farther than the other, and just feels looser. any help?

    39. I had a really quick question I have already noticed the my poor Jun has some very slight discoloring on his head...luckily its barely noticeable and I am thinking I will just cover the spot on his head cap with a piece of velcroche once I get ready for him to get some wigs. But I am wondering are there any kinds of particular fabrics that I need to be careful with once I get clothes and wigs...things like that. Just wondering what kind of precautions I can take to not have him get stained on me right away. Any advise on the matter would be wonderfully appreciated, epically since I am planning on getting other obitsus and would like to avoid ruining them if at all possible.
      Thank you!

I have already asked about this in another thread but I thought I would address the issue by it self. See if I could get anyone to comment on it since where I asked before is kind of a old and slower thread.

    40. I think the best thing to use is a body sock under all her cloths

    41. If this has be already discussed then, please correct me and I will happily remove this thread. ^__^

I noticed Obitsu's seem to collect a lot of staining and I wanted to know what kind of chemicals we could use as the best offensive against removing these stains! ^^

      I've tried:
      Non acetone nail polish remover
      Acetone nail polish remover
      Witch's Hazel
      Oops!
      409 (lol.)

      Thank you! :treecookie

    42. http://www.twinpines.com/

Made by doll people for doll people; there are vinyl specific products that will get darn near everything out.

    43. So, I was aware of staining on vinyl dolls. But some weeks ago I got this wonderful HZ wig in black and because it didn't fit anyone else I decided to give it a go on Mika. I left the wig on her for not even 10 minutes... The result: horrible stains not only on the top of her head but down to the eyebrows! The thing is that she is wearing a dark brown wig from Volks the whole time and it never left any stain. I already tryed a magic eraser but it had no effect. I'm desperately in need of some help! Any advices are highly appreciated.

I'll take some pictures tomorrow in daylight if needed.

    44. 10% benzoyl peroxide solution (ie zit/acne creme) is your friend. as is sunlight. apply the creme to the stains, and feel free to be generous. cover in cling-flim/plastic wrap and set in the sun, turning every hour or so, for 3-4 hours. remove cling-film, rinse off acne creme, see how much of the staining has been removed. reapply where needed and repeat the process. can be left on overnight.

as for the wig, give it a good wash and vinegar rinse. keep rinsing until the water and vinegar run clear. allow to dry completely before putting on a doll.

    45. para_chan has just about the only answer after trying the magic eraser. Good luck with the stain.

That would have to be a serious design flaw in the DD, they stain wwwaaayyy to easily. I have several folks dollfies and non of them stain like the DD. I am about to put poor renee in a mummy sack to help keep her safe.

    46. off topic, but: serenityslr! pupaparadise sells the same kind of bodysuits that Volks does, for a good bit less. they help a lot with cutting down on body stains.

but you're right, the DD's seem to stain if you just look at them wrong! and yet, i still want one. >.<

let us know how things go with the stain, ryog! ^_^

    47. Thank you all for your answers! I'll try my luck on her tomorrow. I really hope that I can remove the stains - at least on her forehead and around her eyebrows. I always handle my vinyl dolls with extra care when it comes to dark clothes or any possibility of staining but I never thought about her getting those worse stains after just some minutes of wearing a wig! :doh

    48. Hmm... just wondering, wouldn't having a extra dose and layer of MSC help to prevent staining? Or would staining still go through the MSC sealant coating? After reading so much horror stories about staining, I really do not look forward to having my DDs limited to white clothes only. Surely there must be some protectant sealant to help prevent staining? Or am I hopelessly wrong?

    49. shorudan: I have sealed her with MSC but vinyl dolls are really prone to stains. Normally I give clothes that will go on my vinyl dolls a vinegar rinse or at least let them wear a bodysuit.

    50. Ok, so MSC doesn't work that well to prevent stains then... What if the stain is so bad that any amount of magic sponge or zit cream can't clean it - I suppose the last resort is to spray a new coat of skin color onto the vinyl? I've done a couple of resin model kits where I primed and air brushed skin color on, I guess we can do the same to Vinyl right?

    51. actually, what you'd want to do then is to entirely strip the head of its face-up so that you're working with the bare vinyl, and go at it again with the acne creme. if it's still stained darkly in places that won't be covered by a new face-up or by a wig after that, then yeah, you could easily airbrush to cover the marks.

oh heck yeah! i have yet to have it happen that quickly with one of my dolls, but i've heard wig-staining horror stories like yours. minutes! it's incredible! 0.0

what brand wig was it, again?

    52. It was a HZ wig. I was REALLY surprised that exactly this wig stained because I haven't had any staining problems with "cheap" wigs :(

    53. Thank you, Victoria! I didn't read about the remove-zit until my thread got moved to this one!
The BPO creme didn't work out that well so I think I'll try this! x3

    54. Remember that Remove-Zit is not water soluble, so once you get the stain out, you need something to take the Remove-Zit off. Formula 911 (which they also sell) is ideal for that.

    55. Good to know! O_O Does the Remove-zit affect the blushing/ face up/ MSC as well?

    56. Just to put in my 2 cents (in an old thread) : My daughter had a Barbie that she had drawn on with sharpie about 3-4 years ago. She had written all over her legs and it looked really bad. I recently used generic 10% BP cream on them and the lamp method (no window sills here in the trailer lol). This completely removed the marker, and she looks great. I would recommend trying this inexpensive method before buying expensive cleaners. It certainly doesn't hurt!
