Wigs Spray painting a wig?

Aug 26, 2021

    1. Hi everyone!

So today a received a synthetic mohair wig, that is already styled and all.

It's not bad, but the color is waaaaay lighter than the promo pictures, so I'd rather change it.

I saw this tutorial on Youtube (39) Spray Painting a Wig: Ultimate Styling Preservation - YouTube and thought that it could be a cool idea! Did one of you ever tried spray painting a wig, if yes, how did it turn out and what are the precautions you took to avoid staining?

      Thank you all in advance!

    2. I think in this case the spray painting worked because it's a 100% stiff style. No movement. If the wig is a little "crusty" it doesn't matter, and it also can't flake or rub off because it sits like an upright helmet on the head.

I would not do this on any hairstyle that isn't, well, basically Dragonball hair
Because it will stick together the hair, make it stiff and so on.

    3. ^This. I’m trying and failing to imagine a synthetic mohair wig that’s stiff enough for this to work without basically turning it into a sad helmet.

    4. @Ara and @Amet : Ah well, you are both right. Thank you!

I guess I'll find some other use for the wig.

    5. There is spray paint that is formulated specifically for use on fabric, it's made to spray on existing upholstery to change the color of furniture. I haven't heard of anyone using it on wigs specifically, so it would be an experiment. The resulting fabric is still a good texture and the color doesn't come off on people sitting in the furniture. But it isn't the cheapest and that might be more effort/money than you want to use for for one project with an uncertain outcome.

      Edited to add:
Artificial fibers are not amazing at the color locking into the fiber, most aftermarket treatments just put a layer of color on the outside. I wouldn't recommend this for a hairstyle where it was touching bare resin.

    6. If the wig is real mohair (goat hair) you can dye it just about anyway you would normal hair or fabric. if these are fake fur wigs sharpies work. color the sharpie where you want and have a cloth and rubbing alcohol to get rid of the stiffness and then brush it out. Hope this helps.

    7. Hi! Thank you all for your help!

As the wig is synthetic and the hair touch the skin at the temples and neck, I'd rather not try to take the risk to stain the doll and will, with much regret, probably will be putting the wig on sale in an attempt to cut my losses (if I can't make it work for another doll. So we'll see.^^).

    8. I use alcohol ink with some alcohol in a spray bottle. I like FW inks but any ink will do even sharpies. There’s a lot of colors available, it’s cheap, and you can customize/mix it to whatever colors you want.
Spray on dry wig and brush through wig and make sure you get everything covered. Let it sit over night. After that you just wash with regular shampoo and conditioner. If you missed some parts or need it darker just do the process again. If your wig still feels crunchy than condition it again. I have not had a problem with staining but I do not leave my dyed wigs on my doll all day everyday. It’s fine for a few hours or when you want to take pics with.

    9. I have spray painted a wig. It changes the texture of it quite a bit. It worked for the style I wanted and has remained such for almost 7 years. It does touch her and I have had no color transfer. It's black so it would show (red/ orange under the paint). It does make it very stiff, that's why I used it. I have also used a sharpie to darken roots.

It all depends on the style of your wig, how you want it to be, Good luck.
