SoulDoll mini dolls Soulkids Discussion part 6

Sep 23, 2018

    1. Oh yes I agree :whee: Thank you so much! ♥

Thank you! ♥ The author of her faceup is @sarrq, an amazing job as always! :kitty2

    2. Aw, @viventies , all the artists are in Europe! I love Angeltoast's work, but I sort of want to have other styles since she's done all my other dolls, LOL. But oh well, that's OK, I've been trying to learn myself anyways :D (I'm too afraid to ship overseas, especially now a days).

    3. How do you feel about the new Soulkids they've announced? I think they look adorable :love and since getting my Soulkid Angel I fell in love with the Soulkid girl body.
But maybe I should try a small boy next. Is he as good a poser as the girl body?

    4. The girl is super cute! I love her hands too. I might get her depending on what skin colors they offer. Really want neutral tan XD

    5. Neutral tan looks super gorgeous in person. I'd really like to see a comparison between their neutral tan, sandy brown and dark sandy brown.

      • x 3
    6. Sorry for the double post but I asked Souldoll for a comparison picture. Sadly they don't have any :(. They just told me to compare the pictures of Aspa and Juno. But yeah depending on the light colors can look vastly different. Oh well it stays a shot in the dark.

    7. Does anyone know how often Souldoll open their tan skin tone preorders? I’ve unfortunately missed them by a hair and I’m wondering when the next one is likely to be. Do they come and go once a year?

    8. That's a good question. I am unsure if they have an actual schedule or not. But they only open tan skin tone orders for specific lines. Like right now they accept preorders for Zenith boys in dark sandy brown (well until end of August). Last September they opened tan skin preorders for sandy brown Zenith girls and shortly after they offered neutral tan Soulkid girls.

I hope they open another preorder period for Soulkids in fall/winter but I don't know for sure.

    9. Is anyone else extremely upset with Souldoll for releasing such a beautiful fairy set in that gorgeous glowing lavender skin after they just put another one of their Tarot fullsets on layaway? :vein

      ... Just me? lol

I just went to a meetup and saw one of those Tarot Vito Charlottes in this exact resin and it just glows. I love it so much that I really love the look of the Baby Pink Unicorn set in this color! Anyone gonna get her?

      • x 3
    10. I'm not into unicorn dolls, so I'm safe... unless they add an option without the horn or choice of a different head in that beautiful colour :sweat

I have a souldoll doll in a light blue colour and they definitely know how to make a good, icy and glowy light resin colour, so I'm certain this one is going to look spectacular in real life!

    11. I don’t own a Souldoll yet but oh my goodness, after seeing that beautiful unicorn girl, I may have to add one to my collection!

    12. The purple resin is so pretty! And I love her dress. I'm not going to get her, though, because I just bought Angel and I don't really need TWO souldoll hoof girls, right? ...Right?

      • x 2
    13. @Sollnvictus - Without a doubt they do beautiful fantasy resins! I'm sure the blue is gorgeous too. Sometimes I wish they would switch up their special resin color events and allow people to order some of their standards in some of their new colors besides the tan.

@cherryblossoms - They are one of my fav companies! She is very tempting...

@ryuunohime - I meaaaaaaannnn... she could always use a friend? :XD: lol, no I understand. I put another Souldoll Tarot fullset on layaway so I'm trying to not go down that dark road too. Seems the beautiful dolls never stop.

    14. @Dybbuk yesssss they've done it in the past (there was a choice of different heads for Junia spider doll in few fantasy colours and the mint or shaffron Shiva) so I really hope they will go for it again in the future!

@cherryblossoms souldolls are very beautiful in person and the new kids body poses very well too, if that would help you with the decision... ;)

@ryuunohime I'm certain that those two would become VERY good hoofed friends :XD: but again, I understand the struggle - I already had to let go of the idea to get the zenith LIV fullset because it would kill my wallet while I'm still one month away to finish my other layaway...

    15. I did it y'all... this morning. I kept going back to her pictures looking at her trying to find fault somewhere so I wouldn't buy her... but it didn't work :XD:

Plus the free event head and standardized shipping helped. I'm glad shipping won't cost me $200! Hoping to see some others here take the plunge.

I did opt for layaway since the holidays are coming up. So it looks she will be a spring time dollie.

    16. I am sorely tempted by the new unicorn girl. But I also just bought two Frappzilla Moons on layaway and this gal would also be a layaway and..and... *stares longingly at her*

    17. Has anyone bought ballerina feet for their soulkid girls?

    18. @DraloreShimare : Luckily her sale is one full month, so maybe it gives you a little time if you want to purchase her and make a deposit :)

      • x 1
    19. True! I have a little time to think, and save. :)

      • x 1
    20. The new Unicorn is pretty; love her outfit. Her skin color is a new fantasy color, different from the Light Serenity color of my Charlotte, so I'd really love if they gave a comparison of the two!! Not getting her, but so curious to see everyone's irl pics!

      • x 1
    21. @marci12 : I'm so curious too, because I saw my first Charlotte at a local meetup and fell in love with the Light Serenity color. When my girl arrives, I can ask the local owner of Charlotte if I can do those comparison photos. I hope they are similar, but I imagine Souldoll makes the resin name adjustments because these concept art dolls are limited products. They probably mix the unique resin color in small batches and can't ensure that the resin colors will remain consistent.

    22. Has anyone seen a Young Won owner picture anywhere? I'm thinking about ordering her, though she doesn't seem to be very popular. I like her strange grumpy face.

      • x 1
    23. Question for those who own the new Soulkids girl. I love my Angel and I am very very impressed with how fluidly she poses. But currently she can't stand on her own (with flat feet) :...(. I was so sad and disapointed when I found out :pout:.

It's like her heels insist on being the only point of contact and her toes get pushed up in the air. And that throws of her balance completely. She can stand in are converse style sneakers but they absolutely don't fit her aesthetics. And even with them her feet still try to do that.

I'll try to take a picture because it's kinda hard to describe.

But still. Can your girls stand? Maybe it's just a case of bad string tension.

    24. I usually have my girl in her heel feet with heels but I've never had an issue getting her to stand. Weird stringing issue maybe?

      • x 1
    25. @QuietYurei : I have never seen owner photos of her sadly. I think she's very interesting as well, but she's definitely a rare one.

@laquaza : I don't have a kid's body to attest to, but I do know that Souldoll's in particular come strung incredibly tight compared to other doll companies. My first Souldoll boy was so tight his arms would fold at the slightest movement, I had to loosen him up to hold poses. I can't say for sure that is your issue, but it could be if the string tension is pulling her feet upward a bit? Just an idea. All the Souldoll lines I have had (Double, Zenith, Tera Zenith) can stand...I doubt their Kids line (one of their most popular) would have such a faulty engineering flaw.

    26. Just popping in to say, my NL boy stands very difficulty, not sure what the problem is, but he's fine in chunky boots, or when I have him in his 'casts'

    27. Okay, so as someone brand new to bjds, I am curious about my experience of the new SK double jointed girl body and how it compares to bjds more generally.

I find myself surprised at how limited some of the range of motion is... specifically 1) the fact that the inside of the elbows point directly forward and to rotate them so that the arms cross over the chest requires turning the shoulder in such a way that the upper arm starts coming out of the socket, and 2) basically any movement of the hip, including sitting down, requires the thigh pieces to come out of the hip socket. ...And this is to say nothing of any pose that does not include knees pressed tightly together.

All of that said, it's clear to me that these constraints lead to a series of poses and motions that are very elegant, feminine and pretty. So if - as a rather suspect - there have to be some tradeoffs around poseability somewhere, I guess these are good ones to make. It just leaves me feeling a bit like I have training wheels on. I wish I had the latitude to make more mistakes.

Is this an unreasonable reaction? Maybe this body is actually more flexible than most...? Maybe there are bodies that are more flexible but have made tradeoffs in other areas (body part shapes or stability or what have you...)

Maybe the joint-out-of-socket situation is not as problematic as I'm finding it? Maybe I just need to look into wiring or sueding so my girl can hold those poses better on her own...?

Any advice or anecdotes from those with more experience in the hobby (which is to say anyone) is/are much appreciated. ^^

Incidentally @laquaza, mine stands well, but I do have to hold her feet down and wiggle her ankles a bit to get the angle right.

    28. While I don't own a soulkid myself, I have handeld them and I have many other dolls, so I can compare them somewhat. Generally speaking all dolls have their strengths and weaknesses. Flexibility is only one part on the puzzle. Some dolls have a large max range, but don't do their inbetween poses very well, so the real possible poses are still limited, the opposite extreeme is a doll with a limited range, but very good control within that range, making many poses possible but only within that limited range. Some dolls have very well engineered joints that preforms really well, but are less pleasing to the eye, and the other extreeme there is a very beautiful doll with less mobility. Some dolls have a lot of mobility, but not much stability, making posing them frustrating because of that and others again are the oposit with a limited range but they will hold the pose you put them in until you move them again. Some dolls are clearly made with some specific poses in mind while others are equally good (or bad) at all they do. The list keeps going, but you get the idea.
These things are hard to put into words, so ususally when beople discuss posing they mostly say that a doll pose well, or not so well, but that don't really say much as people will have different frames of reference and different preferences.
This does make it a little bit difficult to research the posing abilitites of a doll body, but there are a few tricks.
One is to look at owner pictures. The best ones are the ones where the doll is not carefully posed. a doll pictured simply being around while the owner makes something for it, for example, will usually just be plopped down and will take the kind of pose that comes naturally to that doll. Looking at a lot of owner pictures can also give you a hint. Look for things like if a disproportionally number of the doll are holding their arms in certain pose, or tilt their head a certain way, or is never posted free standing and so on.
Looking carefully at company pictures also help. While that can sometimes be a little bit misleading (usually not on purpose, it's more a case of them knowing their dolls and want to show off their strengths) Souldoll usually have plenty of pictures of the dolls in different poses. Don't just look at the sales page for the doll you are interested in, but any other that shares the same body, to get as large a sample size as possible. If you see a lot of repeated poses or notice something missing, that is a possible indicator of what the doll can and can't do. I just looked and it does seem that there are very few pictures of arms crossing in front of the body and in the few cases that they do, there is usually something supporting the arm (an elbow rested on the dolls knee or on the arm rest of a chair and such) while there are alot of pisctures of the dolls with the arms bending forward or folded up towards the face. Some of these have the elbow joint fully exposed so you can see quite well how it works.
So in this case, there is nothing wrong with your doll, that's simply how it is made.

As you mention, ther are a few workarounds such as sueding and wireing, but they can't change how the joint is engineered, only modding can do that. What it can do is help the doll holding poses that otherwise would tend to slip or are just a tiny bit outside of the dolls natural range.

Another thing that can help or at least never hurt is to take the time to get to know your doll really well. Some dolls takes a bit of getting used to to get the best poses out of. And knowing what your doll can and can't do will help a lot when taking pictures and can also help avoiding frustration when just handeling.

Best of luck in getting your doll to work for you!

    29. @Lillith, Thanks so much for your thoughtful and informative response!

I do want to be clear that the double SK body is beautiful and a lovely piece of engineering and I'm having a great deal of fun with it. As you can see here, I got her to clasp her hands and sit cross-legged, so she knows a trick or two. I may decide to get a new body in the long run, but that's a good long way off... Who knows, maybe I'll be bitten by the modding bug? It is the kind of thing that happens to me. But for now I'm VERY satisfied with my purchase.

I do wish there was like a checklist of things experienced doll buyers look for in photos that makers and owners are inclined to disguise. That would be super helpful! ;)

    30. You know, that sounds like a great idea for a General Discussion topic. I bet people have a million different things that they look for. Especcially people that have many years in the hobby. I think many do it without really thinking, we just sort of develope a feeling for what dolls we will be happy with, but if we think about it there is probably a wealth of hobby wisdom out there about how to spot the real posing abilities of doll bodies.

    31. Does anyone have any hybrids? I’m getting a Gana head, and a Willow (full doll) and thinking of putting Gana on the body, and buying Willow a new body. Willow will be a shell for an oc of mine- who is on the shorter side. She’s in NS, so it’d be nice to have something that is somewhat close to the resin tone.
If anyone has any suggestions, or pictures of their dolls- I’d really appreciate it!

    32. I have a Willow (I love her so much!) My only Souldoll Hybrid is a Hari head on Angel Studio 1/4 body. It's not great. I ordered her a Myou body but it will be a while before it gets here. Comparing resin colors Souldoll NS seems to be more pinkish than Doll Leaves and slightly darker than Resinsoul, but lighter than Fairyland. If that makes any sense.

      • x 1
    33. Willow is truly so pretty, I'm excited to see her in person! Which Myou body did you purchase, if you don't mind me asking? Coincidentally I was eyeing the 44cm version II on Alice's Collections (though I only just now realized it was taller :sweat).
That is super helpful with the resin! My dolls are mostly from Souldoll, and I don't really have anyone irl that collects BJDs- so the information is very much appreciated. :)

    34. I purchased the new Version II body! I wanted this doll to be my tallest 1/4 girl. Souldolls are wonderful! You are very welcome. I

    35. I really want to get a SoulDoll Kid girl but am torn between the 2 body options. Has anyone had/handled both and can give some pros and cons to both bodies?
I like the look of the N.L body more but it seems to not have an ankle joint and I'm wondering if this is ever causes issues.
The character I have in mind will also likely be one that mostly wears heels so that's pretty important to me but am not sure which body is better for this.

    36. @EternallyEmma I have the NL body, the old double jointed body and the newer double jointed body. The NL is the most aesthetic imho but is also the worst posing of the three haha. I believe I have some heels (for non high high feet of course, so low heels) I can try on them all if you want a comparison photo?

      • x 1
    37. The NL bodies definitely have the weaker pose ability. While the do have ankle joints, they are not very efficient, especially on the boy body, as it is heavier, my sister has the NL girl body for her minifee head, and while the posing is as limited as my boy, she can at least stand pretty easily

    38. YES please! If you don't mind of course, that would be really great!

@Mew-Lidia9 Oooh, do you know if they are compatible for a hybrid the other way around then? So a SoulDoll Kid head on a minifee body? I don't want to hybrid as I do like the look of the SoulDoll bodies but it would be good to know if it is possible to do so. Which resin options does your sister have please that she's used for the hybrid and what's the match like please?

    39. @EternallyEmma Not a problem! I can also show you a Souldoll hybrid with a Minifee body ( I have a Minifee and a floating head I can try on). Gimme a day or two to get it done.

      • x 1
    40. I don't know about the other way around, but it should theoretically be possible? Both the minifee head and souldoll body are in normal skin, the head is older though, so it is more yellowed, but the difference is slight (you won't really notice unless you look for the difference)
Here is some pics you can see of the doll.

    41. That would be great, thanks so much!

Yes these are really useful, thanks!

    42. @EternallyEmma Ok, here are some images linked HERE on my flickr. The purple skin is the new double jointed body, while the tan/sandy brown skin is the NL body from around 2011 I think. Some general thoughts, the new double jointed body is way more poseable, but does suffer from some asymmetry (one leg is a bit longer than the other), so standing is not as solid as the NL body. But you can turn the leg out so the foot is pointed away from the body and the NL body can't do that because of the design differences. The MNF body (tan resin) is from 2020 I believe and you'd need to modify the neck to fit the head if you wanted it to work (as well as remove the cap on the MNF neck). I included a shot of the neck holes, you can see how much smaller the Baby Lovely Ver. (purple resin) head neck hole is compared to the MNF Kai head. Hope that helps some!

    43. @karlyl Thank you so much! These are really helpful!
I completely forgot that the neck holes would be so different. :doh
Are they both wearing the heels with their normal flat feet?

    44. Yes, all flat feet all around lol

    45. That's good to know too then that they can both wear heels with their flat feet. I'm always confused about heel feet, I've never had any before but I've also never had a doll wear heels either.

    46. It depends on the heels whether they can be worn with flat feet or not. I have low heels that work better with flat feet and some that require heel feet. It's definitely trial and error.

    47. Hey all I've finally decided my first doll will be a soul kid! But.. which one? If anyone has the following dolls would you mind sharing your photos of them?
      Thank you!
      Dolls I'm considering:
      Willow (shabby version)
      Finley (human version)
      Amelia
      Annamari (vistor version)

    48. I have a Willow (shabby version) but not a lot of decent pictures of her.
Here she is when she first arrived.

    49. I think shes absolutely gorgeous. How do you like her?

    50. Does anyone know the torso/back length of these dolls? Its not in the basic measurements provided on their site

    51. I love her! She's really gorgeous in person.

      • x 1
    52. That's great to hear! I really think I'm going to pick her as my first doll!

    53. On that note,
Is there anything i should expect or know before hand about souldolls soulkid? Any quirks or common issues? I've been told to have realistic expectations for my dolls and to find out these things beforehand so I'm not disappointed (good advice!)
So soulkid owners, is there anything you noticed that i should know before i purchase?
I will of course read through the threads myself and see what i can find but i thought it wouldn't hurt to ask
      Thank you!

    54. I'm very pleased with my soulkid and consider her a decent poser. The biggest posing faults for me are the arms, they can't turn at the elbows or hold inbetween poses. Her arms also don't really hold inbetween poses well at the shoulder but sueding might help this.
Another point is finding clothes. Some minifee clothes will fit and some won't. Things that are stretchy or baggy will have a better chance of fitting. Pants probably won't fit at all due to the thicker thighs.

    55. Hm okay thank you, this is good to know

    56. Hello! I love Soul Doll and have owned almost every version of their MSD body. :) They are beautiful dolls, but they do have some posing quirks. Which body are you getting?

    57. Probably the girls new double whatsit
Any chance you can also tell me what size wig to use? Ive looked through threads and gotten mixed answers..

    58. I've been meaning to write about my experience with my Soulkids girl but I keep forgetting to do so. Even took some pictures for posing reference recently *_*.

Regardless I feel like her biggest issue are standing stability and crouching forward. She bends back very nicely though (and her body silhouette looks a lot less disturbing than the Soulzenith girls doing the same :sweat). You definitely can't just plonk her down and she stands. Instead she needs to be balanced very carefully. That is honestly my biggest gripe with her.

What I love though is just how fluid her movements are and how easy it is to engage her double joints. Some of my other dolls feel very mechanical. You kinda have to click them into place. Like my Tinyfairy who's a great poser actually but it's a very different experience compared to a Soulkid.

I'll try to resize my pictures to a DoA appropriate size so I can share some.

      Edit for wig size:
      Mine (Angel) wears 6-7 wigs.

    59. I agree with Iaquaza that standing can be an issue. My girls really want to tilt forward at all times. I found that a little hot glue in the ankles helped with this.

Arm mobility is good (I have hot glue in the shoulders otherwise she can't really keep her arms out) but I also agree with InnocentSin that the lack of turning ability at the elbows really limits the arm poses. Wrists are good and expressive though.

The underbust joint on the new double is pretty good! I can get mine to hold nice slouching or leaning back poses. It's a very pretty, smooth joint. New double girls also have a joint in the upper thigh that can be rotated or pulled out to help them sit with their knees pulled up. They take very graceful sitting poses.

Wig size is tricky because Soul Doll heads can vary in size. Most of mine take stretchy 6-7 with a silicon wig cap. I primarily buy from Leekeworld and ForMyDoll these days. Soul Doll heads can be a little oddly shaped making them a tougher fit for hard cap wigs. If you want a hard cap, you might want to see about getting it custom made or see if the artist has Soul Doll heads.

Also, these girls are tall! And they have long arms, long legs, and big hips and a butt. Minifee clothes tend to be too small. I've squeezed my girl into Minifee leggings but they're stretched to the max and end above her ankles. Iplehouse JID clothes tend to be a better fit but can still be too short in the arms and legs. If you're getting the small bust, she'll fit more easily into slim MSD sized tops or dresses that have a free hip measurement. I also buy a lot of Civilized Evil tops for my girls and those tend to fit pretty well but, again, will be a bit shorter than pictured on her models.

Shoes are thankfully easy. I've had no problem fitting them into standard Minifee A-line sized shoes.

I actually did a picture review when I got Juno here Soul Doll New Double Body Mini Review but the body has had some improvements made since then! In particular, it no longer has the problem with the resin piece breaking off in the torso joint.

    60. Thank you so much for all the detailed info! Yes i actually did read your article before! I'm glad they fixed the torso joint
