Repair Souldoll (burned lashes and glued down head plate among other things)

Apr 6, 2022

      Destroyed property (dolls)

Is my bjd souldoll soulkid yeon bee salvageable? How should I go about getting her right? Not sure if I posted pictures well.
I had to leave behind my one and only bjd(and all my possessions) when I fled my own apartment for my safety from an abusive extremely mentally ill ex of mine. Upon returning with an order for protection I found everything smashed and /or burned.
Most of my dolls( majority were lol surprise dolls) were burned/ melted into an unrecognizable pile. Others weren't found like my monster high dolls and an ooak ever after high doll who's hands were the only thing left.
Compared to my other dolls, my favorite bjd suffered much less since she is at least recognizable.
I found my most prized and only real bjd ( the souldoll) not at all the way I left her. She was found in a rather suggestive position missing her clothes, wig and boots( ooak) among other things. It was evident to me that he attempted to burn her eyes by lighting her eyelashes on fire. She is visibly dirty like the way heavily used barbie dolls are often found in thrift store bins, not sure I want to know what he did with/ to her . She has small random nicks as well as damage to her original faceup. Her skullcap is also seemingly superglued down.
It also concerns me that bjds tend to soak up smells and the entire apartment stank heavily of incense combined with perfume and/or cologne, im assuming this was to cover the smell of cigarettes.
I'm hesitant to try and right her issues in fear of making them worse. Also haven't been on doa almost since I got my souldoll way back in ... oh gosh like 2015? So hi again and hope I posted correctly, navigation is confusing.
Any help would be greatly appreciated even if it's just to direct me to a better area to post.

    2. I'm so sorry this happened, but at least you got out safe. That's the most important thing.

On to the doll, if I recall correctly superglue can be weakened by putting the item in the freezer (if someone can verify that, please comment). She can be unstrung and cleaned thoroughly with warm soapy water (just make sure she's completely dry inside before restringing her, and you could use clean string to make sure any smells didn't get stuck in the elastic). You will have to remove the faceup to clean her, sadly, but a faceup can always be redone.

As for any nicks and divots she may have, briefly dipping the pieces in boiling water can pop those kinds of dents out of resin, since it has a sort of "memory" of the way it was casted. If a piece was shaved or chipped off, however, that would need to be modded back to normal (by sanding something smooth or using something like Apoxie Sculpt to add something back)

I hope you can get her back in tip-top shape, please stay safe

    3. Ok thank you good info! I read something about using charcoal( happen to have some) to try and soak up strong lingering odors would that in anyway damage the doll? I'd just put it intoa box with her since I honestly get a headache from the overwhelming smell of the apartment on her. This was something someone had suggested I may need to get her taken to a professional doll restoration expert to help fix.

    4. Charcoal as in BBQ charcoal? It might help with the smell after she's cleaned if it's still there, but just make sure she's not actually touching the charcoal, it could possibly give her gray stains where it touches her. I'd also imagine cleaning her swiftly after this damage was done (and the smell seeped in) would help in that it would have less time to "take hold" in the doll. But I'm no expert in getting smells out of dolls, so hopefully someone else with more insight can comment on that.

ETA: I looked closer at the picture of her face, and she may need to have her eyes restored via modifications. I can't tell if the damage around her eyes is possible residue or something from the eyelashes being burned, or if the resin around her eyes actually melted slightly. But, either way, that can be fixed/restored

    5. No its activated charcoal often used to soak up household smells but good point about the time she had to soak up the accumulated scent. thank you!

    6. Yeesh, what a nightmare! I'm sorry this happened to you, but I'm glad you're okay.

For the doll, I recommend getting some magic eraser(s). They'll be good for not only cleaning any stains but for helping to remove the faceup. Sadly you will have to remove it to clean her, but I think it's too damaged to fix anyway. Alcohol 70% can also help remove it, if the magic eraser is not enough (it might not be). The alcohol can help remove the burnt glue around her eyes as well.

For the headcap problem, I suggest boiling the head. Boiling gets rid of superglue pretty quickly, and it will help repair some of the dents/marks in the head. As suggested above, this can also help get the dents out of other pieces.

For the smell: honestly good old baking soda is pretty handy in this department, just put her in a sealed container with an open container of it. It might take a few days, depending on how "deep" the smell is. Cleaning her with the magic eraser, as well as soap and water, will also help get rid of the smell.

I don't think you'll have to go to a professional restorer, I think this is doable on your own. It will at least save you some money to try yourself, so it's worth a shot. Baking soda, magic erasers, and alcohol are all pretty cheap. I hope it goes well, good luck to you and your girl!

    7. Ok thank you also good information, I'm curious what would the concern be with leaving her face up on ? I've done doll faceups for other types of dolls and I feel like her face up would just need a touch up with new lip and eye paint added to it. And lashes although I may easily be overlooking important details

    8. I’m sorry this happened to you! What a nightmare. Unfortunately, it looks like her eyelids have been partially melted. The faceup would have to come off so a modder can see the extent of the damage before they can repair it.

You could try and just paint over what’s left, but I wouldn’t go into it with high expectations.

    9. The face up looks pretty much gone as is, sorry to say. To assess the damage to her eyes, it would be best to just clean off everything and get her as blank as possible. Just trying to fix what is left of the face up will most likely not look very good.
From your pictures, the actual damage to the resin doesn't seem too bad though, so after cleaning she might be easily fixable. It's the edge of the eyes that I'm most unsure about.

    10. The edge of the eyes? She does have pretty slanted eye mold originally but I guess I'm not sure what you're referring to actually. I'm sorry there was a lot of damage and things that I didn't even recognize... it was alot to try and take in all at once I guess

Thank you and everyone for the compassion. Unfortunately I'm not a part of a start up business or really have any funds. Had to move back in with family for the first time in 10years.

    11. I don't think she has damage overall, if it is it is minuscule. However, you will want to wipe any sealant on her, if she stinks chances are the sealant may hold the smell as well. I would also look for new elastic and give her a good bath in soapy water, rinsing her in pure water before letting her dry. The Faceup can't really be saved at this point, well it would be easier to just redo it completely as her face is covered in dirt as well.

    12. Ok I just looked over her face again and perhaps you're correct her eyelids definitely don't look the same ( one has a bulge ) and I can see her lips have been maybe rubbed off?
Do you have any suggestions for a modder? Or should I post somewhere else?

    13. Try cleaning her first and assess the damage again after having done what was suggested above for removing the glue, smell and little dents. Take it one step at a time.

    14. Thank you that's something I can act on ! and if I get stuck I can always come back and ask more detailed questions

Perhaps I'll even feel comfortable enough to do my own first bjd face up after all this. I mean I have been hoarding the pastels for her body blushing that I'm too scared of using sealants to try. A lot different from the mass produced dolls I've done face ups on before.

    15. I've had great results using fresh coffee grounds to absorb the smell. Probably similar to the activated charcoal. Put the coffee or charcoal into an open container, set the doll & container in a plastic bag & close it up. Will take at least a couple of days, up to a week depending on how strong the scents are you're trying to remove. Works well without affecting the doll.
Be careful about dipping the head in boiling water. Great for quick dips to try to fix a dent or perhaps that one eyelid, but that would be a last resort for dealing with the glue. Try the freezer first.
Sounds like you have faceup experience from other dolls & the pastels on hand, so good luck getting your doll transformed. <3

    16. We'll know more once you get her unstrung and scrubbed clean, if you haven't already. A couple drops of dawn dish soap and mr. clean type (melamine) sponges should help you scrub all debris off. Leaving all the parts in a big bag with some fresh baking soda has helped me remove nasty smoke gunk smells from resin before. We can probably talk you through what you'll need to do to fix your doll up.

    17. For strong smells I highly recommend this product:
      https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0061UMTVG/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_NRCN4CCXTBX9KD5M3ZET

We use it at the library I work at to remove smells from books and it works great. We put the books in an airtight container with the rocks for a couple days. I’d advise cleaning your doll as best you can before trying to tackle any lingering smells.

    19. Thank you all !! This has been very informative for me. And I appreciate the community helping me navigate through this.

    20. This is truly sickening, I'm so sorry this happened to you. If you're comfortable making a gofundme to get her a new faceup or replace your burned dolls please let us know

    21. I replied to your Reddit thread last week, my advice and offer to fix her for free remains the same, though I'm sure you can find someone in the US to do that which would be easier for you. Best of luck!

    22. I might be I just didn't understand what you meant at first.

    23. That's a good idea even if she lost most dolls which is sad she got out safe That's even better. It would be nice to help fund her to help build her collection again. Oh I replied to the wrong comment again. I was replying to @Konjyouyaki .

      @echoplexic
I'm glad you got out safely.

    24. Thanks for all the positive vibes and advice. It really means alot.
I realize that I think have basically everything to try to do my own faceup for her except MSc. I mean I've done smaller dolls face ups .

      • x 2
    25. Anyone have a cheap place to get MSc in the us?

    26. I keep MSC UV Cut in my cart on amazon just so I can track the price for others, since I've started airbrushing my sealant. Current, it's going for $16 and change but it does sometimes drop to $12 or $13. It can also jump to almost $30 though so it depends on how cheap you're looking for.

      • x 1
    27. Wow 30 bucks!! Geez

    28. Oh yeah, that price fluctuates WILDLY, which is why it's always in my cart so I can track the best sales for other people.

      • x 1
    29. usagundamstore.com usually has it for a decent price

      • x 1
    30. It's like just as coveted as the bjds themselves lol

    31. Oh my god, those photos made me want to cry just looking at them. I'm so glad you're safe! I wish I could help but all the previous advice is better than what I could offer. The damage to the resin looks mostly surface level so I hope she can be cleaned up, I'm just glad that awful person didn't smash her :(

    32. Thank you I appreciate the emotional support either way I wish it were easier to upload photos on here since I did start trying to fix her up!

    33. You can't actually upload a picture to DoA, but you can imbed a picture that you have uploaded somewhere else. Just make sure your host allows hotlinking. When you want to use an image in a message here, just click the image icon and paste the URL for your image into the box that pops up, it will generate the code for you. Couldn't be easier. It works the same in private conversations too.

And I would love to see your progress. Restorations are always very interesting and rewarding.
      Best of luck to you!

    34. [IMG] [IMG] [IMG]

    35. Is it just me or did that not work?

    36. It did not work. Double ceck that it's just the URL that you copy with no pregenerated tags or formating. Some hosts provide an allready fixed up sharable bit of code and if you use that you paste the entire thing into the message instead uf using the DoA tool and it should imbed the picture. I've never used any of those so I can't help you furter, I prefer to keep it simple. But the topic comes up every now and then. You can do a forum search for the name of your image host and see if it has been discussed.

Your images should show up in the message box as your write and in the preview as well, if they don't double ceck the URL. If the image shows up in the the message box and preview but not in the message, it may be the image bug acting up again (there is a notice about it at the top of the forum). The image is usually still visible in the reply box if someone is quoting your message though, so it can be seen. If this happens, make sure the image is of an appropriate size for forum use as the bug, while unpredictable, tends to hit overly large images more. Anything so big that you need to scroll to see the whole picture is a bit of a waste anyway as the viewer won't be able to see the whole.

You can paste the URL directly into the message as well, it will automatically appear as a link instead of an imbedded image
      Example: https://lillim.com/images/liz/blanket.jpg
While a bit annoying, especcially when people link to not just an image but another site with their own terms of service, it's a workaround. If nothing else you can use it to make sure the URL actually works. It's just a direct link to the image itself, after all.

    37. I hope you manage to get some of your work uploaded to flickr so you can share <3
That's terrible to read what you've been through, but I'm glad you're safe and on the other end of it all now. I hope fixing your girl up will help you heal and move on. I know a lot of my projects have done that for me.

    38. Ive got pics up on the Flickr of my progress so far. I'm especially excited about my somewhat quincidental diy bjd eye invention made from garbage and desperation, ha! ( its makes changes to the iris colors a breeze not to mention it accepted pretty much any medium even glow paint) And yes I completely agree with the somewhat therapeutic side of fixing her up. Even tried to give her a more mischievous look( vs the sadness she displayed before) and I think it's fitting, considering how she got there.

    39. The issue may be that I'm confined to mobile but idk I'm sorry I can't seem to get it no matter what I try but I did upload more to flickr if you're able to view it.
