Soom Teenie Gem and Monthly Doll Discussion Part 14

All of my teenies have fantasy parts, that's the best thing about them in my opinion Here's the only one whose parts I've managed to blush (though it's pretty subtle in photos) Juniper, who is a yrie/hati hybrid. She's my little lioness - she just needs some appropriate ears.

 

She's adorable, NoDivision! Yrie & Hati are two of my favorite sculpts!

@NoDivision Juniper is super cute! Love her face up! Where did you get her dress? I actually have a similar ones in white and light blue.

Same seller - kuloft. I have a pastel one as well on another of my girls. I'm sad that she doesn't seem to make dresses in YoSD sizes anymore. I really wanted to have a set of 4 teenies to be the 4 seasons and have them all in similar dresses. But I still need an autumn and possibly a different doll to be my winter. And I don't think I'll be able to get dresses for them

 

Welp, I'm hoping to dye my Pyrol's centaur parts today or tomorrow. I think I'm actually more nervous about restringing him properly then the dye process, itself.

Anyway, I'll share a photo once he's back together. Hopefully his dip in the dye bath goes well.

Sorry to double-post, but I wanted to share my Soom Pyrol's custom dye job with fellow Teenie Gem owners:



If you're interested in the process I used to dye him, here's a link to his project journal. Apologizes for his blank face---I still need to give him a face-up, as well as style his wig, make his clothes, etc. I've always wanted his ponybutt to be black but was too afraid to customize him until recently.

But I'm happy to report we truly bonded over a pot of boiling water!

I definitely can understand the fear behind dying one of your babies (I doubt I'll ever attempt it), but sometimes it can be truly worth it! In your case, it definitely was.

 

@PeppermintPocky That is a fantastic dye job! And it gives me hope for any future Teenie Gems I might obtain - I have plans that include odd colors so knowing I have the option to dye is a huge plus!

Thanks bunches!!! Yes, Soom's resin seemed to take the color beautifully, although there is some slight marbling near the seamlines. My centaur's seams arrived very jagged and uneven, unfortunately, so I can't say I'm surprised.

When you get around to customizing your future Teenie Gems, I'd love to see them! I def' recommend iDye Poly---I didn't even need to use the "color intensifier" provided in the packet.

What Teenie Gems are on your radar, if you don't mind my asking?

 

@PeppermintPocky Aww but that's to be expected whenever a surface isn't perfectly smooth. But from his pictures you can't tell at all!

It'll probably be far off into the future before I get to customizing, let alone bring home one of these cuties - it's for a very large project I have in mind. I'm actually about ready to start the project journal (I'm gathering up some reference photos/sketches).

I'm mostly interested in the fantasy option parts (for hybrids), but I have to admit there are a few that have caught my eye and would suit my characters: Han or Asronn (Coyote Elves), Viol or Ling (Leaves Elves), Gloti or Lati, and Aloa or Sov, Yrie...and maybe Beyla. I don't expect to get everyone of course, I just haven't narrowed down my choices yet! *chuckles*

 

I had a question regarding the Beyla centaurs, anyone who has one, are they suppose to have elbow joint pieces?

Aaaaah @PeppermintPocky I love his color scheme!! What did you use to paint his body? I was thinking about painting my Bygg centaur to have a black body at some point, but I wasn't sure which would be the best way for me.

I dyed Orion's unicenta half using iDyePoly in Black. It was my first time dyeing a doll and I was absolutely terrified to "test" the process with an LE, but by the end, the experience gave me a bit of a rush. I submerged each piece (one by one) in the dye bath for three minutes, then dipped them a second time for another one and a half minutes.

I would love to see your Bygg centaur! Do you have any photos of how s/he currently looks? Never enough centaurs around here, IMO. If you decide to dye your Bygg in the future and have questions, feel free to ask---I'm always happy to help!

And yes, iDyePoly def' gets four hooves up from Orion, heh. I'm going to try some of their other colors here soon and I'm hoping they offer similar results.

 

I'd love to see them as well! I have plans someday to have centaur bodies for the Picro and Viol that I have, and they will need to be died in blue and yellow-orange (whenever I get them). I know there's the large test thread for different dyes, so I know that iDyePoly's pink looks very good, but I haven't seen any other colors.

Ohh, they're so sweet! I'm so glad I never got in on a mermaid craze though! I wouldn't have been able to stop, and it would've turned out just like my centaur collection!

 

I totally agree. They are both so sweet. I think I like the orange tail better so that might make me get the lighter version but I don't know!

Oh, such beautiful colors you have planned!! I haven't seen iDyePoly yellow or orange, but I have seen their turquoise (not their pure blue but close). Here's a thread for it in case you are interested. It's very vivid and lovely, IMO!!

Your duo = adorable!! I love the wig on the left one (I can't tell the difference between Feny and Nacy, sorry...).

My wallet would be empty if it weren't already full of lint. I swear, I'm upset at myself enough for missing the 1/4 Serin and these? These are just... ugh. SO CUTE.

I'd go for orange, just in hopes I could somehow snag a 1/4 Serin with an orange tail someday. Matching mermaids, FTW!

I would guess around 6-7". I know my Soom Pyrol wears a 6-7" wig, but fits best in a 6-6.5" wig. Serin & Rico Jr. look like they may have slightly larger/wider heads compared to my boy, though.

White skin... sighs,... I would love to buy Rico in normal skin. Then my Rico, named Nichan has a little sister as well.

 

Ohhhh crud.... I need a mermaid baby to be my half-mermaid demi-Goddess. And I've been wanting a light violet TG for a while! Purple is my favorite color, after all!

I'm not really sure I am sold on the face... it's cute, don't get me wrong, but I'm not Soomed... and I hesitate to spend that kind of money on a doll mostly for the resin color and the fantasy parts... I'm not sure that I can justify it if I am not in love with the face sculpt.

I might ask Soom if they have any photos of the sculpt without the face-up, so I can see what it looks like unpainted. Sometimes a different face-up can change a sculpt enough that I end up falling in love after all!


Also, could I request some Light Violet resin spam, please? The more recent, the better.

Me too, @AirimirOfGondor! I've been waiting for the perfect sculpt for this doll since 2012.... I loved Taco/Dolomi, but they didn't have mermaid or fishy parts... Iv/Eliv had fishy parts, but the sculpt wasn't right and they didn't come in a blue or purple resin. Sammi & Picro were pretty darn close, but their fantasy parts weren't fishy enough (too gecko/lizard-ish).

I will have to do some thinking, definitely!


ETA: Re-stating my request for Light Violet spam since we're on a new page. I'd love to see any Light Violet resin cuties out there please!

x__x There's a lot of weird stuff with photos at the moment - Photobucket and a few other hosting sites aren't caching properly on the forums for some reason right now; the mod team is doing our best to figure it out though!

But it is really annoying, especially if you are, for example, browsing through Photo Ref researching sculpts, like I was trying to do before I remembered!

 

I would prefer NS to WS, too. You're certainly not alone there.

I feel you on the face(s). Honestly, my initial reaction to them was... huh?! But then I pictured the face blank and thought, "Hey, if I were lucky enough to snag one, I could sand down the cheeks a bit..."

Then I was sold. Only a 0.09% chance I could afford one atm but I look forward to seeing others' baby mermaids when they arrive.

 

Yeah, I noticed this! I thought it was just me, so I'm actually relieved to hear that it's something going on with the forum and certain photo hosting sites! I hope you're able to figure it out soon!

@PeppermintPocky, I had the same thought about sanding down the cheeks! My only fear would be that the sanding would discolor the resin because of the color (since I want the light violet). I don't know if seeing the sculpt without a face-up would change my feelings on the cheeks though. For me, it's the teeth that is the most unappealing thing about the sculpt. Don't get me wrong, sometimes teeth are adorable (my Bygg & Beyla girls have tiny teeth), but for some reason on this sculpt I just don't like it.

Anyway... I posted on the Q&A and asked for more photos and (hopefully) blank photos without the face-up... I am not holding my breath though, because they don't always take photos before they do the face-up.


As for affording them.... I'm a bad girl and I was thinking I'd do layaway on my Paypal credit. But I also have a back-up plan because my husband's Aunt has been paying us to house-sit for her and she's due to send us another payment soon, which should cover some of it at least! Still have to make sure that I can justify this purchase though... it's a big purchase for us and is not to be taken lightly!

 

I only just bought Teenie Gem number 8 and I'm soomed again ToT/ my Serin is one of my favourite sculpts so this one just blew me away ....

 

That's cool you had the same thought about their cheeks! I understand your hesitation when it comes to sanding violet skin, though... I'm guessing that would be very difficult. I hope Soom will respond and show you a blank version of the sculpt! I know I've been dreaming of Soom releasing a Teenie Gem with a mermaid tail since they teased me with their Eliv & Iv release, and that was right when I entered this hobby.

Soom replied to my Q&A post!

I wasn't really expecting them to be able to provide the photos I requested, but they did! I asked for a photo of the face sculpt without the face-up and they sent me this:




I also asked for a photo of the doll without all the extra frills (outfit & such) and they sent this:




At the risk of being extra demanding, I asked for photos of the Light Violet version.


As for the head sculpt... I'm torn. I have a feeling those teeth would be fairly easy to sand down. The only question is if I would attempt it myself or if I would ask the face-up artist to do it. I'm just not sure if my face-up artist has the means to modify her. And the prospect makes me very nervous...

That second photo they sent me is pretty darn cute though... she's growing on me, that's for sure!

I'm also in the 'not quite sold on the face' category. Cute but not really the look I'd want in a mermaid. I have been searching for the right mermaid for a while but I'm being picky.

 

I love Soom so much... They are so awesome!

They indulged me with my request for more photos of the light violet version:










They also told me that the CW version is Serin and the LV version is Rico.

I love how the tail is sparkly/shimmery! ^_^ I'm thinking I might just have to bring this gorgeous girl home with me...

 

@Kelaria, I'm sure a faceup could hide the teeth well enough, without the need to sand it.

 

I was thinking the same thing, but the blank gray head photo made me wonder again. They are pretty prominent, more so than I initially thought.

I do wonder though if the lighter resin color (the light violet) would make the teeth seem less prominent. That dark gray color is quite different than the light violet or the cream white.

I won't say it's 100% yet, but I am pretty certain that I will be putting this girl on layaway.

 

My SOOM Feny & Necy Head has teeth too, but if you don't color them white, you don't see them

 

Weirdly enough, I like the teeth on Feny/Necy.
