Soom Teenie Gem and Monthly Doll Discussion part 12

Oct 12, 2014

1. I have an old single joint Teenie Gem (Hati 2009) and a old double joint Teenie Gem (Trachy 2011). My only issue was ever the two jointed piece that, as Shara said, was always rotating and making the arm look unatural. But this has been solved in the new body.

If you are expecting a posability like Fairyland or Luts, it is not as good. But apart from that I consider Teenie Gems to be on the good side of posing. You may need to re-string, especially if you wish to use the fantasy parts, as these usually are shorter than human parts. I have played with lots of tinies from different brands (Volks, Aileendoll, Fairyland, Luts, 5stardoll, Littlemonica, Leeke, FairyGarden, Bluefairy...) and Soom are on the good side of the posing scale!

I had no trouble posing Llop in this shot for example.

2. Thanks to everyone for the help!
(All your little ones look amazingly cute by the way :aheartbea)

I learned alot I really didn't knew, especially about the elbow joints.
Because on photos I always just saw a single joint and couldn't even know, that the newer version was different from the old one or still as good as the 'double', just without the extra piece. ^^
Its also good to know, that the piece in the torso can be removed, if I don't like it. :)
(I don't mind little mods like this at all)

Another really great information was the one about stringing.
I know Iplehouse dolls come with really lose stringing, so nothing breaks in transit, but from Soom I never heard about it.
(More the oppose. My Little Gem body came with perfekt tension and in most Super Gem boxopenings I saw the same)
So I would have been really put off, if the doll arrives and everything is loose and floppy, while I wasn't expecting it.
But so I am warned and even could ask my faceup artist, if she could give it a good stringing, while the doll would be there.
(Planning is everything ;) )

I also had a blast searching for posing pictures. ^^
Most of what I would like the doll to do, is possible.
They even can do my favorite sitting pose (with the legs slightly put to the side) and the wrist movement seems to be great too. :3
So far I am really happy of what I see and hope a little coyote can join my group soon. ^^

3. Pantalaimon & Grim Fandango - I only have one Teenie Gem: Yarn. They have all their fantasy parts on (hands, lower legs, feet, scorpion tail) and can not only pose quite well, but Nadir will balance on one leg quite comfortably (even with their huge wig on, and standing on uneven ground!) I've not sueded the body in anyway, although I did re-string them to put on the fantasy parts. Excuse the odd perspective of the photo, but here's Nadir standing on one foot in the veggie garden.

4. No worries. These little Soomlings can ninja kick you in the face if you want them to!
(forgive the older faceup and the nakedness, I was just testing out the Appini parts that day)

5. Quiet and Insane & Tonboko :
Your little ones are completly amazing!
:D
Thanks for posting their pictures.^^
I am really impressed by the poses on one leg.
(Appini blew my mind...I ever thought their fantasy parts were as 'impossible' for real use, as the ones from Kivi/Trond, but this pose is awesome!)
I hope I can order my little guy around the week, after Soom respond about my current order. :)

6. I think all other fantasy parts are quite 'possible', except for the Ai hooves... Thos things just don't do anything except stand in one pose. Too bad, since they look extremely cute! But I don't use mine much for this reason...

7. Thanks Grim Fandango - I was just playing around one day and I thought I should try to see if Nadir would stand on one foot. I was quite happily surprised that they do. :D Very handy for a cheeky scorpion who's always running around and getting into mischief.

8. I'm really wanting to get a Coyote, I really like the surprise face but am wondering if I need a "dog" since I have a fox and two cat dolls.

....hmm maybe there would some fun stories there :-P

9. Im thinking making my little coyote a Native American Spirit Animal. I thought about making him a headdress with feathers but I'm not sure which colors would go with the Grey skin color. Any one have any suggestions? Also trying to decide if he should be a wolf or a coyote spirit. Thanks for your help.

10. Thats such a cool idea Yurikun. ^^
About the feather colour: Those white feathers with black tips, as seen in many illustrations, would be a great contrast to the grey skin.
(You could use white feathers in the right size and paint the tips yourself, if you cant find them that little)
I think the decision if coyote or wolf spirit is all yours. ;)
The idea is really nice, I am sure it will turn out great either way. ^^

11. The native american spirit style for the little Soom coyote is great indeed! I'd love to see how it turns out if you'll do it Yurikun. Makes me want to get one now myself haha. Not that I can... I'd say wolf spirit btw since wolves seem to have been big deal in native american stories at least.

12. On the other hand, Trickster Coyote is definitely a thing in a lot of Native American legends as well (as well as Coyote the Creator and the Shapeshifter Coyote), so it's totally legitimate to keep him a coyote, too. I'll be looking forward to seeing what you end up doing, Yurikun! They're adorable, and I almost want to find an excuse to get one myself, but I have to not get anyone that's not in a specific plan...

13. Thank you for the input, everyone! Sorry for not replying individually or right away - it's finals week. @_@

Just the same, I think I am going to give the coyote a shot. Posing IS important to me since a lot of enjoyment of my dolls comes out of photography, but I'm not asking for the best poser ever. Honestly, seeing those pictures of teenies standing on one leg were pretty impressive! As long as she can hold a simple pose and hold her head up, that's good enough for me. :)

14. Ooo, trickster coyote and shape shifting?? Then definitely go with coyote! I'd have so many ideas to execute from all that. Now I burn to see what kind of things you'll do with your Teenie coyote, yurikun

15. Tonboko youre ninja kitty is amazing! that kick makes a great photo and an impressive bit of pose work for sure! :D

I don't spam often enough on here but I love seeing everyone elses photos! I'm excited to see what people do with the coyotes that came out, im safe luckily, phew! skint as it is bwhaha.

Here's some Neru spam for ya, sat in a bowl of sugar air guitaring with some more sugar! NOM!

16. I'm so happy to finally be able to join all you fine folk in this thread. I had promised myself that this year I would purchase one of those "the one who got away" dolls that I've missed out on over the years. I managed to stumble across a Teenie Gem Sov centaur in light green skin in the marketplace here, and I knew at once she was destined to be "my one"! She just arrived and I'm completely in love with her. I've named her JinnJinn, and she's currently in pieces on my work table, destined for a complete makeover and restringing. I've already sanded off those "sharp enough to filet fingers" seams! Phew!:sweat And her pieces have been sprayed with MSC in preparation for a new faceup and some rather extensive artwork (we'll see how that goes.);) A new wig and eyes are also in the works. But I at least wanted to introduce her to everyone in the thread. Here is dear little JinnJinn this morning before the spa treatments began.

17. PoeticSoul your doll is cute, but those are some scary lights in the background, I thought they were flowers of some kind, but nope vampire bats. lol

18. Ha! Yes, the bizarre and eclectic is the norm in my doll displays. I just love the juxtaposition of pretty, cute and spooky all mixed together...as though you can "see" a long and varied family history behind each specific doll. JinnJinn's mother was a centaur and her father was a dark Djinn...so JinnJinn is a combination of centaur and genie. Yet she's still quite young of course, so just wait until I toss a few My Little Ponies and cute outfits into the mix as well!

19. She is super cute, PoeticSoul! I really love Sov, she is adorable. Though I confess, I absolutely love her pointy ears! Here is my elf Sov to say hi to yours! Can't wait to see what you do with her :)

20. Duskblue that is a great full face picture! I love those ears, and your girl's face is really great for her color!

21. Thanks, duskblue! Your little elf girl is so precious...I absolutely love her sweet faceup. And you're so right, the ears on Sov are amazing...I just fell madly in love with that cute sculpt and pretty pale green skin tone from their initial release. But alas, as often happens in this hobby, I just couldn't swing the finances at the time. I'm so happy I finally found one on the secondary market and now have my own pale green Sov!:)

22. I took some pictures last weekend (Sat morning) of Tytus with his new face and wanted to get them edited and uploaded asap, but then I had strep throat over the weekend (still on meds for that actually) and then yesterday our sweet kitty who adopted us about six months ago (he was a stray that started coming around and we started feeding him and taking care of him and became really attached) was hit by a car sometime in the past few days and he had to be put down yesterday while I was at work... :( My heart is broken because he was the sweetest cat I've ever met (completely loving and a total lap cat) and we wanted so bad to bring him inside, but our apartment doesn't allow pets...

I'm slowly working on editing and uploading the pics of Tytus that I took, but it's gonna take much longer than I originally anticipated. Here's a teaser for now:

If anyone wants to share some cheer-up spam for me, I would appreciate it. I need some cute dollies to brighten up my day... :(

24. Oh, my gosh, Kelaria! I am so sorry to hear that happened. It is always super hard to loose a furry friend, especially to something like that.:(

Here is a little Charis to try and brighten your day:

25. Oh No, Kelaria that is terrible :( It is always so unfair when pets go, specially if they are still young and healthy! Lots of hugs and think that at lets he had the chance to spend some loving time with you, I am sure he was very happy!

Llop and my cat Kirk send you lots of love

26. Thanks guys! <3

Sakura_LH, your cat is so gorgeous!! And he looks like a sweetie too! <3

I never got to take any photos of our Bub with any of my dolls, but here is a link to a photo of him if anyone is curious: Bub The Cat

I'm just glad that my husband was the one who took him to the vet and so he was able to be one of the last people Bub saw. :[ He knew we loved him and he loved us and showed it! He knew where home was, even though we weren't the only ones who fed him (although we fed him regularly while others just fed him occasionally). I brushed him almost every day and gave him love and treats. He was a really special cat, truly one of a kind. <3 Animals are so wonderful and have a way of really getting into our hearts!!

27. Aww, that's sad Kelaria. I'm sorry to hear about his passing.
Here's a little spam of Nadir (before I made their wig) in a rather tiny desert.

28. Kelaria: I'm so sorry to hear about your loss:( He was a beautiful cat, and I'm sure he had a happy life with you...

I just saw this on the Soom Rosette twitter: https://twitter.com/micky_hy/status/596128953686863873
The Japanese tweet translates to "currently busy for this reason". I don't really get it, but the paper under the TG has "The Chess White Pawn" , "Glot", and some other stuff written on it. I think the TG body standing there is the re-released Sov, though? And what about the one lying around in the background?
This might be nothing at all, but maybe it really is a new chess piece, so I felt like mentioning it:)

29. Dark_Shiva, those hooves belong to Glot/Glati/Kenny/Silt. If my memory serves right, Aloa and Sov SO were wearing Beyla horse parts. Therefore I think it is very likely we may be seeing a Glot chess piece soon!

OT: Kelaria, Bub was so pretty!!! I love black cats!

30. Oh, you're right^^
But damn, I hope it'll be some time until they release these guys... I've spent enough money on dolls already, and Glot/Glati are definitely on my wishlistT_T

31. Oh Kelaria I'm so sorry! :( Ari wanted to help with the feel better spam by posting with the "tribbles".

32. Oh snap and damn if they release a white pawn as Glot and Glati! That outfit is looking gorgeous, I might have to snatch that if it still looks as gorgeous in full pictures :) I'm already regretting not getting the black pawn outfit when Hati/Skoll was released... :(

33. Oh man.. that outfit! I might need that for my Ai/Glot...

34. Thanks for the kind wishes and cheer-up spam. :aheartbea

I'm looking forward to seeing if we will have another Teenie Gem chess piece soon! That's an exciting possibility! And Glot/Glati was a fairly popular sculpt too, so I imagine they will be popular. I have thought that I might like a Glati someday, but I dunno. It definitely won't be any time soon.

Anyway, here's my little gray chess piece (Skoll) with his wolfy paws on:

I'm completely in love with him! <3 Skoll in the gray resin is just lovely! ^_^

35. I ordered my first BJD! So excited!

36. I just tried both, the European and English sites, and the "buy now" button leads to an English site, as usual. Maybe try leaving and re-entering the site? Or maybe use a different browser?

37. I sorted it out. Apparently signing up to become a member fixed everything.

38. I'm really excited for the white pawn Glot but I hope they don't offer her until August or so. So I'll can finish my layaway for my Coyote first :)

39. I hope so, too, but from experience I'd say they'll release them within the next 1-4 weeksT_T They usually post teasers almost directly before they release the dolls, and since Han and Asronn's order period ends on Monday, it's quite possible they might release these new TGs a few days after the Coyote Elves are taken down.

40. Awwww, Sakura_LH that is so cute photo. I like how your cat is like happy with the doll haha.

And sorry to hear about your pet, Kelaria:pout:

41. So you think that is just an outfit or special order doll or both?

42. I think it'll be another Chess doll, meaning yes, doll and outfit:) And if it really is Glot/Glati, then I'll definitely be getting one:3

43. Does anyone know of a comparision picture between Impldoll's vs Bambicrony and Soom? Someone is offering me a outfit for a trade.

44. I can't help with the impldoll, but I have a bambicrony and soomlings, so I can take a photo of those two together later if you
haven't found your answer before then. (if that will help some? )

45. Aww man all your little ones are so cute, I love visiting this thread! :D I am still waiting for my FC order from October last year and I am almost out of excitement for my two incoming Teenie Gems (Taco and Grit). The only thing still keeping me going is visiting this thread so please keep on spamming your cuties!
I must say though this whole ordeal with my order left a bad taste in my mouth. I don't think I will participate in another Soom event again. Soom told me my order would be delivered in the middle of April but they are still not here and it's almost the middle of May. I've been waiting for seven months now (four months after I paid off my layaway) and I don't think they will arrive this month even. I will probably wait over eight months for this order and I haven't even ordered any faceups or blushing or sanding. :...( During my waiting I have paid off another doll in a three month layaway and received it lol.
I'm so sorry for the downer, please ignore me, I just had to rant somewhere. :sweat

46. *hugs* Zomboid. I'm sorry that's happening to you. I guess if I were you, I'd send Soom another Q&A. Another thing to think about is that every day they're over 100 days, they owe you back in points towards your next doll. My first soom purchase went over the 100 days and I had $100 to spend on another doll! So after 100 days, I was like "take your time..." LOL. I'm not sure how many days it is after you've paid in full, but it's something to keep in mind at least. I hope your little ones get to you soon.

Here's some spam of my FC Grit/Taco for you <3

47. Zomboid, I would definitely remind Soom that you're however many days over the 100 day guarantee (and it's 100 regular days, not business days, I've asked). That might light a fire under them to get your order out before they owe you hundreds of $$$ in points.

48. Thank you both so much for your encouragement! awww duskblue your Grit is so adorable, I love the red wig with his grey skin so much. And I love the ttya shirt, I was thinking about buying that in the future lol. Hmm I always thought by the 100 day guarantee (lol yeah ,right) they meant business days which would mean they wouldn't even apply to me yet. But if it's regular days that makes this whole situation a little more bearable...:wiggle But I would still prefer having my two babies though. I already asked them about my order a week ago and they replied that they would reply again. :doh Which they have not as of yet. But I am paaaatiently counting my days....

49. I used to think it was business days too (and honestly, that would be smarter on Soom's part, but whatever), but I put in a Q&A inquiry and asked them directly and was told that it means just 100 regular days. ;)

Definitely re-post on the Q&A board and remind them. You may have just accidentally slipped through the cracks somehow. :/ Or maybe there was a problem that they're fixing before they send your babies to you.

Either way, take comfort, because I'm certain that once you see your babies in person, it will all have been worth it! ;)

ETA: Here's the post on the FAQ about the 'Delivery Time Guarantee system' which states that it is 100 days (including weekends):
http://dollsoom.com/eng/bbs/board.php?bo_table=gemfaq&wr_id=47&page=1

50. Completely, it's 100 days, not business days, confirmed on that as well. You need to totally check in with them on QA again, not meanly, but just an 'ahoy' to them to remind them that they need to check. If they say they need more time, note to them that you're, say, 110 days or whatnot, and you are fully away of the 100-day guarantee, and I'm positive they'll at least have an explanation, if not an estimate, for you after that.

.hlp

51. What does everyone think about the Layway notice Soom has up?

52. Longer layaway options? Heck yes! :)

53. Here's my little photo spam

I'm thinking of painting a pattern/tattoo on the wings when I get some inspiration.
He's pretty much complete now, but sometimes I think he's looking a bit plain.
Anyone have any ideas?

54. But didn't it get shorter - not longer XD

He's a cute birdie,Psywave ! What kind of tattoo/pattern were you thinking of? You could also use some color tint on the wings since birds often have that little bright color somewhere on their body.

55. I'm not sure maybe metallic/steampunk theme, or enhance the colour on the front and have a full tattoo on the back of the wings.
It doesn't have to look natural.

I also think it's good that Soom is updating layaway policy based on experience so to help keep up quality control and have less delays.

56. And I finally got my payment sent, so now I just have to wait for my wolf-baby to arrive! :3

57. I'm not sure I understand the notice about the layaway. Why does a longer layaway let the resin colour deteriorate more quickly? Don't they only start making the dolls after you paid off your layaway? And is Soom's resin so unstable that it immediately begins losing its colour? I am confused lol. I have a Glati in cw from the original release and he is a creamy yellow colour but it's not too bad and actually looks pretty, so I'm not that concerned with Sooms resin but I am still confused about that notice.

58. Zomboid, I think that, depending on how long the layaway is, they can't wait until you pay in full to start making the doll because they make them in batches (so, several dolls at a time). That's probably how they end up having extra dolls for the Post MD events that they do (from people who didn't finish their layaway or cancelled their order after the doll was made). I think they probably wait to start putting your order together (assembling the doll, painting, etc.) until you've paid in full, but since they have to make the dolls in batches, they can't wait on just one or two people who are still paying off their layaway and then make only one doll for that person (if that makes sense).

As for the "deterioration" they talk about, I would assume they mean yellowing. The longer the doll sits around made, but not sent to the owner, the older the resin gets and there could be some yellowing or color change. Then, the person who bought a "new" doll isn't actually getting a "new" doll because it had to sit around and wait for them to finish paying their 7 month layaway (for example).

That's my interpretation, anyway. :)

59. I've been giving this a lot of thought (I'm sure I have another ridiculously long post somewhere), and I wonder if it's not exactly like you say, Kelaria, but with a slight difference. :sweat

I do think it's absolutely true that Soom makes all the head casts in one go, and makes all the special parts in a go. But on the other hand, there may be some flexibility in making human body parts. So over time, something that's been sitting on a shelf for 8 months for a super-long layaway might be discovered to have a problematic torso part, let's say, in the course of doing body blushing or somesuch.

Now, Soom's going to want to replace that defective part before it's ever sent out, but their next resin batch has got a different tinge to it (which we know can happen with any bjd company and pretty much every company I shop has some note that there can be at least minor coloration changes from one batch to the next). So they don't have an exact match anymore (and imagine if it's not a resin they make every month), and they're now on the 100-day clock to either recast the entire body, or to get the replacement part 'right' before shipping. Either option costs more and more money, just like having enough 'extra' parts lying around from that batch to handle unforeseen issues costs money. What doesn't cost as much money? Shorter layaway periods to pay for things.

End mild conspiracy thinking speculation!

But I'm going to be honest, and say that I'm not sure the primary motivation on resin issues is why they've publicized this change. I think they're just super-tired of people finagling super-long layaways from them, it's hard to keep track of these things, they're getting trickles of payments in and having to store these dolls, sometimes for years. Stuff happens to dolls that have been stored for years, and they aren't just limited to resin changes. People forget where stuff is when they haven't looked at it in over a year. ;)

Now they have given us an additional automated 5-part layaway option, which is probably their most popular request, and in exchange, no more finagling, no more weird, super-long, layaway requests. This makes us happier (as the majority of people can now just get a 5-part layaway if we want one), less QA requests for layaway adjustments, and less angst from people who perhaps shouldn't be purchasing a doll if they need super-unique arrangements and timeframe to pay it off, only to turn around and, potentially, complain about the doll they've received after so much time.

Now, isn't Soom going to be in DollNorth this year? Could someone ask them, if they do a QA, what's up with the layaway change? :D

.hlp

60. I think there's a very likely chance that you are exactly right about this. And honestly, I wouldn't blame them. I mean, it's nice for US to be able to beg them for a longer layaway when we need it, but it's gotta be tricky for Soom to deal with all of that and keep track of it (after all, they have potentially hundreds of customers, possibly thousands, to deal with all at once). And you have to wonder how often these longer layaways are cancelled because the person just couldn't actually afford the doll in the long run, or unforeseen circumstances happened during that long layaway period, or they just changed their mind or stopped paying. Then they have to deal with an already made doll sitting around getting older as time goes on.

Truthfully, it's great that they're offering an official 5 month layaway plan as a third option, but anything more than that and you (general "you") have to kinda wonder when it might be better to admit you can't afford the doll. I know there are plenty of people who pay off their long layaways no problem, but the longer the layaway, the more time there is for something unexpected to happen (like car troubles, or medical expenses, or an injury, or a family death, etc.). Soom is trying to run a business, not a charity. I don't blame them for wanting to stop doing something that is possibly costing them money (and headaches) in the long-run.
