Soom Super Gem Discussion (Basic, Limited & Special Order) - Part 12

Hello guys! New to the discussion. c:
I have my grail doll, Ender Dreamwalker, but he sits on my shelf because the hobby escaped me. I hope to talk to other SOOM owners to get back into the hobby and cry over beautiful dolls
This was the last time I did anything with him, in 2016. He just sits...

 

Having them just sit around isn't bad. Currently I have 4 dolls sitting on the love seat (one of them is a Soom Euclase). The other 65 are in their boxes (technically I suppose it's 63 as 1 is enroute to me and another has yet to be sent to me from the company). I lack display space for that many dolls but it doesn't mean I enjoy them any less. The in-transit doll is a Vesuvia with the poison kiss body and I'm very excited to get her since I've wanted that fab scorpion tailed since I first saw her waaaay back in the day.

 

Mine just sit on a little shelf next to where I sit on my computer. I moved them recently and they were covered in dust. T_T It was sad. That's how little I touch them.
But now I have reason to move them more often cuz dust is nasty.

I haven't been very active at all in the discussion threads lately, life has been super chaotic & busy, but I was inspired around Halloween to take some photos of my boy Nuriel. He's a re-shell of an old mnf character of mine. I had been looking for an Amber for a long time starting a couple years ago, and finally found one right before a divorce/move and big life changes. I finally got him all done sometime last year/early 2020 and most recently got him nail hands that I happened to find for sale already painted how I'd imagined!

That was the last time I brought him anywhere. I've since switched his wig back to his default but I'm hoping to get him some new outfits and hands (the faceup on his hands has rubbed off so badly...rip)

@Ouja Akuma I know how you feel, I have a crew that I periodically take out but most of them stay safely hidden in their cabinet away from light and dust.

Lately they have started to come out more, though! Now that I have my studio room painted and new shelves and drafting table set up, they have become my creative friends and companions! There's nothing wrong with them being shelf babies, though. Sometimes it's reassuring just to look up and see them there, knowing if you wanted to you can pull them down to play. Besides, the big 'uns do get heavy to carry after awhile! My arms are sore after I carry them around Renaissance festivals for the day too, lol!

Ooh, photos from that meet would be fantastic! I don't think I really took any myself. I was super nervous and awkward, it was my first bjd meeting haha.

 

@Ravenwolf He looks amazing and finding the right hands is serendipity as it's best!

 

I've been trying to get more active with them, maybe start making clothes for them again or buy some wigs. Idk something. I spent too much on them to let them just sit and collect dust. One of them became so loose from just sitting all these years. Which is fine, I wanna reshell him. Just trying to find the right sculpt first before I proceed.

Would anyone be able to recommend some shoe brands that fit soom gem boys? I never have issues with the foot base but man them calves are thicc. I can only ever find more formal looking shoes but I require boots. I've looked at soom's site and nine9style already and nothing....

 

@Ouja Akuma I believe my boy is wearing some Volks boots..most of my Sooms are hybrids but the one is on a Soom body and I am pretty sure he has SD17 boots on Hopefully that helps!

 

Hey there~ does anyone happen to have a Chalco with the hooves? If so, how have you managed to dress your fellow? I want him to have shorts/pants that show off his amazing blushing and having no luck.

 

I think you'd likely need really wide leg pants that have significant width all along the leg length in get beyond the huge hooves. Or you take his feet off to dress him (which is a pain). You can also likely go with hakama style pants. Thai fisherman pants (wrap pants) will absolutely go on without trouble but may not be the style you're looking for.

Rhyia (Euclase with fantasy owl feet) wears primarily his default shendi (short, ancient Egypt style skirt) because he always wears his bird feet (and I'm not removing them just to get pants on him) but I'll likely make him a pair of wrap pants or hakama style ones for the odd time when he will need to wear pants. He's been dressed in only his shendi since I got him last year and his husbands are NOT complaining in the least about that.

I'm so excited, I just received a romantic Double Harmony Breccia and her paw blushing is just so pastel and pretty! I am in love.

 

Mods and face-up have now been completed and the head and chest of my Vesuvia boy are enroute to me. I'm excited to have him all together and I'm hoping extra hard that overseas shipping doesn't take forever *fingers crossed*.

I've ordered him a wig but it's coming from China and delivery is said to be between the end of January or mid-March *sighs*. I have a wig he could wear but he wasn't all that thrilled by it when I tried it on him before I sent him out. I'll also need to get cracking on sewing him clothes as any pants for him are going to be exclusively his due to the scorpion tail.

 

Here is Fleur, temporarily borrowing Annalise's wig until hers comes in I can't wait til she has her ears and I can make her tail, too!

@LiselT I really love the blushing on her paws! It works so nicely with her outfit and entire aesthetic. I hope you will share her again when you get her wig.

Also, I got my Chalco some capri type pants from Alice's Collection. Their styles are limited but it's worth a look. Of course I had to put the pants on first and string his hooves after they were on. I gotta say... loving fantasy legs makes for way more outfit complications. I also found the "shorts" my Heliot is wearing on Dollmore. They're very roomy, so another thing to check out. I attach a photo so you can see how they fit on them.

 

@Dybbuk I absolutely will! I am totally smitten with her! I had intended her body to go to someone else amd the body to be re-blushed but as soon as I saw her paws I fell in love!

Oooh. Thank you SO much! I have be scouring, trying to find anything that could get around those thighs of his. I knew I would have to dress him with hooves off, so that's not a problem.

 

I got Vasyl (Vesuvia Poison Kiss) back from the modder last week and finally got around to taking some pics with something other than my phone. I sent him to Dr. Krow to have a ftm chest mod and to have his face painted. I'm beyond pleased with the work Dr. Krow did and absolutely thrilled that I was finally able to bring this character to life with the help of the good doctor. The colour difference between the old/newly exposed resin is also not as sharp as it appears in the photo but I think flash is responsible for that.

Yes, he still looks very feminine and will easily be mistaken for a female. It's part of his character that he does as he was born female and made the decision to morph into male because it was what his nest required of him after the number of males in the nest were drastically reduced when they were raided by slavers. Vasyl is married to Wae-Lan, God of Pain & Sorrow, and Macian, a Priest of Bao-Tein.

Does anyone know where the heck to buy pants for the Vesuvia Poison Kiss body? An attempt was made today to draft a pattern but since my spatial reasoning doesn't really function anymore, it was a glorious failure. At least I've learned to walk away before tears became involved.

 

I got Pava out a while back and took some snap shots. I also needle felted her a new tail using teddy bear armature inated if wire so it's posable forever.

I don't know who checks Soom's doll creating calendar but it looks like there will be a new Amber released in the next couple of days? No teaser yet, I am assuming it will be a human one like the Daughter of Caliph.

Ok Soom Experts, I could use some help - I have an SG boy body I've been fighting with on and off for years and I have a question.
This is the "new" (when I got it) version that has the round things in the thighs and is strong crossed at the hips. I don't know how "new" it is now, I got it ages ago and I don't keep up with Soom releases.

I hate this with my life, and want it strung like a normal body, strings straight down...but thanks to the round things it can't do that. I took the round things out, and it seems as though it will be behave well if it's modded to close some of the hole in the thigh so the string stays where it should.

So has anyone done this? Or something similar? Did my explanation even make sense?
I'm very close to just trying it. I modded my Impldoll Idol body so it doesn't have to be strung this way and it's mostly worked so I'm hopeful this will help.

 

I want to say that was a 2012 innovation and it was for aethetics, not function. If you did it with your Idol you already have a template for what to do, just be sure that he can sit (the cross bar inside the pelvis acts as a hinge so he can sit). My fix was to just sew the string together so there wouldn't be a knot jammed up in his thigh, but you need clamps, a thimble, a big needle, button thread and steely determination to do it

 

Still nothing on the Amber release tho?

@VampireAngel13, I also hate the new leg design with a passion, so I modded my Sard to be strung normally. I used apoxie to close the hole between the pelvis sockets, and made the holes for elastic smaller too. On the legs, I closed the side slots with apoxie, made the top hole smaller, and dremeled a slot down the front like old fashioned legs. It worked just fine and his legs don’t smack together all the time like they did before, nor do the legs sag down when I lift him by the waist (Note: the legs I modded were actually Benmore legs, not human legs, but the same principles apply I think. I might do it to his human legs too even tho I don’t plan to use them)

Now to figure out if I want to go for this one or not instead - it would make the hybrid I want easier, but then again that's money I should hold on to...

I'm grateful I don't collect girls because I have a horrible weakness for grey resin. Mind you, I was wailing about Soom offering several ID51's recently in tawny resin with the demon body and Hyperon head being one of the options. It's a good thing for my wallet that I have a layaway in progress and can't afford another doll right now.

The older Amber I bought was normal skin, so matching isn't/won't be a problem. This new lady is also probably going to be normal skin so then I can just do some part swapping.
I'd bought the last Migma release, originally intending to steal her wings and just mod some holes in the older Amber's back for them, but if [hah, more like when! ] I get this new Amber, I can just put Migma's torso on this new Amber and save myself the modding hassle. And if I get the black horns/hooves, that saves me having to paint or dye later down the line.

The very short version is I'm trying to create an old OC of mine from eons ago. Basically a magic user who took on a curse from someone else, and the curse reflects itself most visibly in her powered up magical form.

has anyone ordered from both the Soom Idealian and Gem sites in one order? It used to be they would combine, but it's not happening now. I posted on the QA but wondered if anyone has needed that since the new site when up. thanks for any info.

 

I used to like that feature. It went away with the new site. At the time I found some documentation that you can ask them to combine orders placed on the same day.

Buy the items on the Gem site, then buy the item on Idealian, using bank transfer so you don't pay. Send Soom item # from Idealian site to add to your order on Gem site.
They add the Idealian item with new charges. You pay again.

Thanks! I’m not sure what version he is, I got him secondhand. But he’s in Bronze and on the original SG body, so I’m thinking he was from a free choice event pre-2012.

It’s a Monique wig, a brand I often fall back on when I’m not sure what to do. Unfortunately they’ve gone out of business, or perhaps are still in the process of closing down. Gotta snatch em up while you still can

 

I'm rather glad Soom's aesthetic has shifted away from their previous high fantasy into this new European military/formal wear/maternity wear aesthetic. I would be a lot more tempted to buy their dolls if they didn't keep rereleasing their old sculpts (and not even the old sculpts I want! Where is Ignim! Where is Coquina!) with styling that doesn't even give me any new ideas.

 

You and me both (where is Vesuvia? or the android that sorta looked like Vesuvia?) I'd also be more tempted by their dolls if they hadn't shrunk the girls down from 65cm. Aside from the fact that my collection skews really tall and girls on the new body will be significantly shorter than everyone else (meaning more forced perspective in photos for me, ugh) I'm getting less resin for more or less the same price, and it's not even the easily sanded type

 

They're still closing down! I actually bought quite a few wigs from them not too long ago. Which wig and color did you get? I love talking wigs for Super Gems haha

 

@Girrl I'll take Vesuvia, Garnet and a green Beryl for the win lol! I have the last releases of the first and last one. I'd love to have a Garnet in a fantasy color. Or grey. I am a sucker for the grey ones.

 

I feel wildly fortunate that I was able to find a Vesuvia with the poison kiss body 2nd hand. My wallet hated me and wailed in pain ($US/$CAN exchange rate hurts something fierce) but it was worth it. I did have a moment of panicky wtf am I about to do when I had her modded to a him but I'm thrilled with how Vasyl turned out.

 

I was super lucky I got a Soom Vesuvia Poison Kiss recently. I was panicked the whole layaway since I had barely started a new job. Now to find some cute floral items that work with the tail.

 

I'm doing a layaway on an OT doll right now and I have moments of wtf am I even doing? since I'm currently unemployed. I have the money to pay it off in full but I'm doing payments because I don't want to get caught short for real life stuff. The chances of that are very remote but I can't help feeling twitchy. The purchase was a now/never thing as the doll had been discontinued/retired by the artist and the one I'm buying is the very last one left.

Oh, would anyone here know off-hand if the current flat girl feet on the Soom site will fit the old 65cm SG body? Was that changed at all? Vasyl only has the heeled feet (2 different styles+resin shoes) but I'd like for him to be able to stand bare foot since shoes are the bane of my dolly life.

That's a good question on the feet. I only have newer SG bodies so I don't think I can help.

 

@jessholy OT=off-topic. He's OT for DoA in general (I think) and very much OT for this thread specifically as he's not made by Soom.

I don't frequently shoe my guys because it's so PITA to find shoes that fit (standard sizes? what's that? - said every doll company ever). But even if I was to leave Vasyl without shoes, he's only got the heeled feet so standing is not really something he can do unsupported right now. That's annoying to me and def limits poses and such for photos. I think even with him wearing the default resin shoes he has, standing without some sort of support is dicey.
