Soom Faery Legend discussion part 3

Jun 23, 2014

    1. My new girl in her new clothes. I'm thinking of calling her Hecate, after the Greek goddess of magic.

I want a white/silver wig without bangs for her. Any suggestions where I could get one?

    2. I wish I had a photo to share with you, but I don't at the moment. I got my Nyer's wig from Kagami. It's a silver-white and absolutely gorgeous. Her wigs are angora and don't come cheap, but they're worth it.

    3. @Leo Pheonix She looks adorable! (I remember owning the Jasmine doll with those clothes!)

    4. Hi!
For a long time was not here. Here are a couple of summer photos with my Illza.

    5. @akitsune she's really beautiful, I love her outfit!

    6. @akitsune I agree, she is gorgeous! Thank you for sharing!

    7. Have you guys seen the newest faery legend doll? Soom's "Black Lake" is phenomenal in that black-gold resin. Looks like an antique ballerina figure.

    8. Oh MY!!!!! She is tempting! And I was thinking I wouldn't like a black resin doll.....

    9. The black-gold version is amazing! I don't love her face sculpt, though. And I need to get another job before I can afford more dolls... I hope others get her and share pictures!

I need to get the two fairy girls I have finished, and make them more clothes.

    10. I just saw those photos... wow! The black gold resin is really beautiful! Im so tempted to get one.

    11. hi! I hope someone does get her because I would like to see at home pictures. Has this ever been done for a full doll before (with a pearl powder within the resin)? I would love to see other pictures if so

    12. emeraldrose - Batchix made a few of the first "Clever Little" line in translucent resin with glitter in it. They were bright colors, so the look was different.
You can find pictures in the Mature 1/6 thread, if I remember right.

And now I'm going to go look at the new fairy again, even though I can't afford one.

    13. Iwa-Xine (Boehm in light green) finally has his partner, Sondo (Akhmel Nathan) home! My camera auto-corrected Iwa-Xine's colour so he looks more like a WS doll, but he is definitely green.

I was also having trouble with Iwa-Xine's wig staying on (it's a Monique wig). He already wears a silicone wig cap but his wig was still prone to popping off. I turned his wig inside out and applied a thin layer of clear silicone caulking to the entirety of his wig and let it dry for several days (it was probably dry after a few hours). Lo and behold! His wig now stays on his head! There is a very slight tackiness to the inside of his wig cap (and he still wears the silicone wig cap) but it stays on his head. I wouldn't have him swinging upside down from the branches of his tree (he's a Dryad), but at least it doesn't pop off now if an errant breeze blows.

    14. @Iron_Dog Those two are amazing together! I like them. And that was a great idea about the wig. I might have to try it.

    15. It's a really easy fix and a tube of caulking is pretty cheap. I also use it to make wefts in addition to using it for what it was actually supposed to do. When you go to smear the caulking on the inside of the wig, make sure your finger is wet or the caulking will stick to your finger and you won't really be able to smear it around. The caulking will come off easy with just warm water and a little rubbing as long as it hasn't dried/cured.

      • x 1
    16. Oh I love this! They look great together!

    17. Can anyone tell me what size S-hook the fairys use in their feet? I lost mine and now My Jinn just sits around legeless...

    18. One of the best things about Soom Faeries is their removable wings, but one of the worst things about them is having to glue the magnets in their back so they can wear the wings. Superglue dries on my fingers instantly but takes like an hour to dry on resin. Which is why it took me this long to get around to doing it, even though I've had her since March.

    19. I use nitrile gloves when using superglue. They are very thin so you can still do small things but they keep the glue from your fingers. I also like the use small bolts covered with plastic wrap as magnet handles.

    20. I have a question, how rare do people consider Soom Faery Legend dolls? The male dolls are basically my dream mature YoSD sized doll, but unfortunately I found out about these little guys far too late. I don't really see people post pictures of them on tumblr, and I've only ever seen a female one for sale in the wilds of Ebay/Facebook/Tumblr etc.

I remember there was supposed to be an event that SOOM was supposed to do with this line around 6 months to a year ago, but that never ended up materializing either... :(

    21. @TollTheBell They're pretty rare, I'll be honest. I don't often see them up for secondhand sale. :s Some are more common than others, though... Depends on how popular they were when they were originally released.

    22. @Idoru Thank you so much for the comment. I had a feeling they were probably quite rare, very frustrating unfortunately! They're like my dream sculpt, they look like mature 70CM guys shrunk down to YoSD size!

Hopefully I'll be able to track some down. :)

    23. @TollTheBell Good luck!! There's a Crow up for sale right now I think in the MP actually, though I don't know if he's one you're after... I feel you though, I love them too! I do wish Soom would do a choice event. :')

    24. I have 2 Soom fairy boys, bot purchased 2nd hand through the MP here. You do need to be a little vigilant to get one 2nd hand and some of them hardly ever appear *sigh*. Soom did do a FCE for the fairies about 2 years ago so it does happen. You can also post a WTB in the MP if there's a specific boy you're after.

I saw that Crow and man is he tempting. But, I have no idea who he is and I have other dolls in the que ahead of him waiting for me to have enough saved to place the order so regretfully, I can't buy.

    25. @Idoru Thank you so much for letting me know! Unfortunately I don't have Marketplace access yet! :( I've lurked here for YEARS and discussed a bit but only recently decided to really buckle down to try and get MP access. I'm after...any of them really!

@Iron_Dog Thank you so much for the reply! I'm curious who your two boys are! Who did you get? My most wanted sculpts are probably Azur (Human type), Labas (his face is so gorgeous), Boehm, and Auber, but all in all I'm really not going to be very picky as I'd love to get more than one of them.

    26. You'd be surprised at how things just sometimes fall into place. I wanted Auber Storm Sprite in grey but didn't have the cash when he was released and I don't put dolls on credit so I didn't buy him. 2 years later, a nearly full set in grey pops up on the MP and because there was a downturn in the economy, nobody had snapped him up yet (the boys tend to go really fast). I got him and am thrilled with him as he's perfect. My other boy, Boehm Smoke Sprite in pale green, was the result of browsing the MP out of boredom one day while at work and spotting him. I shared the sales link with my friend and she bought him as a present for me.

Get your MP access and then start stalking the MP for whomever you want. Patience will be required (as with most things concerning this hobby) but you can also get what you thought you couldn't. That also applies to other dolls as well. I managed to get a Unidoll UH-08 Elf off the MP (with his default face-up no less!) and Unidoll has been gone for at least... 5 or 6 years.

    27. Annnnd the second I hit post I see your response @TollTheBell *laughs*.

Upthread a little is a pic of Iwa-Xine (Boehm) with his partner, Sondo (Akhmel Nathan). Sleet (Auber) is below.

    28. @Iron_Dog

"Nathan"-- Ahhh hello one of my impossible grail dolls! Fancy seeing you here! Hah, I plan to jump on that second pre-order the artist is planning like nobody's business. I'm so upset I discovered Akhmel's dolls too late. I'm more into weird little fantasy creature dolls myself, I'm quite picky with the human dolls (as you can see, considering I'm searching out hard-to-find Faery Legend dolls). It's so awesome to see one of these dolls out in the wild though, an unexpected bonus to be sure!

Your Faery Dolls are gorgeous! Thank you for sharing, I really appreciate it. Seeing owner photos only strengthens my resolve to find some. :)

If you don't mind me asking, since I noticed you mentioned "partner" and I'm inferring to mean that romantically (if you didn't mean it that way, please disregard my gutter-mind), Nathan is such a strange and unique sculpt, I'm curious if he just so happened to be the sort of sculpt you were looking for, or if the story came afterwards!

    29. @TollTheBell I waited a year hoping to get a male fairy from the marketplace. Then this guy was released so I went for it. After I got him, several others appeared in the marketplace and they became not rare for awhile. Haha. Maybe Soom is due to make a new one soon? I hope so. I hope you find one, they are fun.

I will say their tinyness can be a pain concerning wigs, eyes and finding a variety of clothes that fit. That might be why they're not popular enough to make them regularly. But I still love him.

@Iron_Dog Your guy is so adorable sitting in the tree like that. He looks happy.

    30. @brightberry Ah, thank you so much for sharing another owner photo! I'm so happy to see more! Which sculpt is he? He has a lovely profile. I can imagine it must be a pain to find clothes and wigs. Do Hot Toys type clothes him? And I was thinking the Parabox line of wigs might be good? If worse came to worse I can make my own, I've been meaning to learn the art!

Also, isn't that always how things go? When it rains, it pours! I'm currently waiting for a HUGE event coming up soon in Japan for one of my other hobbies, full of extremely rare items that I always end up spending a whole lot on (and a bunch of people join with me too), but in the space of a week and a half THREE grails of mine showed up, two BJDs and another item for my other hobby (that cost me as much as some higher-end BJDs). And I'm talking with three other artists about BJDs. It's absolutely, positively crazy, and not in a good way! Why couldn't life space these things out just a bit for me? *_* Although now that the possibilities have arisen, I don't want to give up on them either.

    31. @TollTheBell , yes, Iwa-Xine and Sondo are lovers. Outside of my day job in architecture and structural enginering, I'm an author and my genre is m/m fantasy/sci-fi/paranormal. Both Sleet and Iwa-Xine (and Sondo) are part of my Divine Worship series which is mostly about various gods and their lovers.

Iwa-Xine is a Dryad of a yew tree and Sondo is a psychopomp that works for Ra-Sui, God of Decay & Guardian of Souls. Iwa-Xine has a daughter of sorts, Cynara, who's a DZ Little Bean (OT for DoA). Ra-Sui is a SD Azrael skull head (which I own) and his lover, Wisp will be a Lume Meissa (which I'm saving for). I haven't written anything yet with Sondo/Iwa-Xine (so many ideas, so little time *sigh*) but there is a VERY brief cameo of Sondo in a one-shot I wrote with Ra-Sui/Wisp.

Sleet is minion and lover to Fei-Lau (DZ Edward). Fei-Lau is the God of Winter Storms. Both of them are also lovers to Khale (Leeke Khal Vampire). Khale is 1/2 Frost Elf, 1/2 Ice Demon. If you're curious, I do have stories of them posted as free-reads on my author journal and I've just started to post the story of how the 3 of them become a pairing. Feel free to hit me up for a link if you wish.
(Khale also has a new wig and eyes since this photo was taken).

    32. @TollTheBell He is a Jinn. I like the name so I frequently call him that. I haven't tried Parabox, but they look like something you could try. His is still the fullset wig. I really want to replace it will something similar but nicer. I'm on my 3rd pair of eyes though. It's really challenging to get them to fit in their little eyewells and still be straight. My back and neck were strained after trying for so long.

And yes! As soon as one of my wishlist dolls come up, all the others do too and I end up having to pick. I hope you get all of yours though! It's such an amazing feeling to get a grail.

    33. @Iron_Dog Ah, another author! :) It sounds like we write in some of the same genres too. I generally keep my writing separate from my other online hobbies because I prefer to keep them compartmentalized, but suffice to say we probably have quite a decent bit of customer overlap.

What a wonderful collection you have, seriously. So many awesome dolls and what sounds like an equally awesome backstory to go with them all. Sure, I'd absolutely love a link if you don't mind sharing. I've been meaning to pick up some original fiction again lately too, I've been indulging in the easy pleasures of fanfiction at too much, and I miss immersing myself in original worlds.

Your Khale is lovely by the way! I'm curious what his new wig and eyes look like now! :abambi:

    34. For eyes, I've had a lot of luck with Captured in Glass! They'll do custom orders for smaller irises which has worked out really well for me. The one thing about them though is at that scale the irises can be SLIGHTLY different sizes, so if that bothers you CIG isn't always the best. But they're very friendly, ship quickly and are priced well so they're where I always go. :)

I DO make my own wigs, heh. :') Obitsu/Parabox wigs work! I also have a few Taobao shops I've saved the links for. But making my own has proved the most satisfying. A friend told me to open up for commissions or sales, but I'm not sure how much demand there is for wigs at this scale. It is a LOT of fun though, I'm quite enjoying myself. I have 5 on topic (and one off topic) 'mature' 1/6s and I made wigs for all of them. Once you get the hang of it, it's super fun I think!

Re: Hot Toys clothes--yes and no. The shoes absolutely fit. The pants are too short and the shirts are too wide. Soom Faery boys are long in the leg, taller than my Xagadoll Ken (or Barbie Ken). I ordered some clothes meant to fit Fashion Royalty men, who are also taller and longer in the leg, and I'll let you all know how they fit when that arrives. It's made to order so that won't be fore a while though.

    35. @brightberry Thank you so much for letting me know the sculpt! I like the name Jinn too, I actually have a character named the same thing with a variation on the spelling. I can imagine the little eyes would be a real pain in the ass to be quite honest! They're just ridiculously tiny to begin with, and then getting them situated right within that little face...sounds like a recipe for some frustration.

I'm glad I'm not the one one who has the issue of "you get NOTHING, and then EVERYTHING comes all at once so you have to make agonizing decisions". It's quite frustrating! I must say I am very happy to have gotten one of my absolute grails for my other hobby too. I paid a hefty sum for it, but it's so rare no copies have been sold online for years, and the last time it DID sell there was a bidding war that brought the item up to around $2600+. While I did pay a LOT for mine, it certainly wasn't anywhere near that number. Ultimately the seller didn't know what he had and so he jumped on my seemingly high offer that was in actuality a lowball if he had just let the ensuing bidding war take its natural course! :mwahaha

But now I'm in a frustratingly touchy place with my extra funds. :| That's the inevitable downside to unexpected grails!

@Idoru Thanks so much for the super helpful comment! I'll have to look up Captured In Glass to see what they have on offer just out of curiousity.

If you don't mind I'd actually love to see some wigs you've done if you have some photos! I've been obsessively watching wig-making tutorials on Youtube because I think it looks so fun! I really want to perfect some punk-rock style shaved head wigs with long and short hair. That's not even really the aesthetic I'm into for my own collecting purposes but they just look so darn fun to make!

I'm definitely interested to hear if some of the fashion doll sizes fit. I kind of figured there might be an issue with their lanky frames fitting into standard 1/6 clothing. Sounds like I'd have to do a bit of commission work for clothes--or brush up on my dismal sewing skills.

    36. Monique wigs also work for these guys. Iwa-Xine is wearing the "Pretty Girl" style in the colour "Electra". Sleet's wig is one I made out of faux fur and strands of Kanelon.

For their eyes, I usually go to Dreaming Tree Studio as she does really nice eyes all the way down to insane sizes like 2mm. She also does custom eyes and her prices are very reasonable. Ready made eyes are available on her Etsy store. Custom eyes have order periods I think (it's been a while since I bought some custom eyes from her). And if you think these guys have tiny eyes, my Batchix Clever Littles wear 4mm and those are a total PITA to get in. Sondo wears 3mm and the ones he's wearing were custom made for him and installed by Akhmel. I highly doubt I'll ever change those itty-bitty eyes *laughs*.

@TollTheBell I'm gonna send you a PM with the link shortly.

    38. I have Metato, Boehm and Rick all from Soom but I did find a Rose on the marketplace. The Xaga 30cm boys are a bit thinner but go well with the Soom boys.

    39. @Idoru Oh WOW, your friend was very right, you should set up a little business and sell your skills! Those are wonderful! They're so beautiful, the way you've kept everything clean and partitioned off between the different coloured wefts of hair is especially impressive, I find a lot of people can't seem to make clean divides and so it just looks a little messy. Yours wigs are remarkably clean and defined.

I love the pink wig and the red/black one the best I think, what gorgeous hair styles and colours!

@Iron_Dog Very interesting. I was checking out Dreaming Tree Studio just a few hours ago but never thought to look for the resin eyes there. I'll need to go back and investigate! :thumbup

I think I received your PM thank you! I'll check it out in a bit, I'm falling asleep on my computer here! *_*

    40. @Idoru Those are lovely wigs. I love how you put the colors together.

@Iron_Dog Those are great suggestions. I'm browsing them now.

      • x 1
    41. @brightberry NP. I've been very happy with DTS eyes and several of my guys wear them as either their eyes don't exist outside of my head or they don't come in the tiny size I need *sigh*.

Be advised that I have a silcone wig cap on Iwa-Xine to help keep his wig on (his is the Monique wig) as well as smearing clear caulking over the inside of his wig since it was still prone to popping off despite the silicone wig cap. I think that's due to the very small size of the Fairy heads. I got some lovely Monique wigs for my Clever Littles (size 3 wigs 0.o ) and the pop-off nature of their wigs is even worse. I think there's less wiggle room for proper fitting wigs the smaller you get unless you custom make the wig (probably hard cap style) for that specific doll.

    42. @Iron_Dog I know what you mean. The small size makes it hard to get a wig that fits just right. He's what tempts me into making my own.

    43. I've been tempted to try making a hard cap wig but haven't been brave enough. One thing that annoyed me was that I got my Auber with his default wig from Soom and it refuses to stay on his head. I wasn't going to use it anyway, but that's not the point. If the company offers a wig as part of the fullset, then it should darn well fit the doll it is intended for.

    44. I agree with you, Iron_Dog, that a doll's default wig should fit properly. I got the default wig for Noellia, and it mostly stays on with a wig cap. Which reminds me, I have four fairies and she's the only one with a wig! So I need to get wigs for the others.

Added: I ordered one from Monique for Ethan, my FCE Boehm

    45. I'm having such a hard time finding a decent long white wig for my Crow. Such a tiny head. If anyone has any suggestions, I'd love to hear them. Might end up commissioning one, but that' very pricey.

    46. My Metato's default wig does not stay on his head. :x:chibi:evil: I love him, but it drives me crazy.

      • x 1
    47. Sleet's (Auber) default wig never stayed on his head either. I found that really annoying since it was the wig Soom produced for him. I made Sleet's wig but Iwa-Xine (Boehm) wears a Monique wig. it likes to pop off as well even with a silicone cap, but I fixed that by putting a small line of hot glue at the front and back of his head so the wig has something to grip. It doesn't fly off often since I did that.

    48. Iron_Dog, thank you for the wig tips! I am going to have to try something because he really gets no play time the way that he is. What size wig cap does he take? 3/4?

      • x 1
    49. They both wear a 4. I can't remember though if the wig cap was a 3/4 or a 4/5.

    50. Hmmmm. Thank you. :aheartbea Does anyone happen to know which it is? I know that they are only like $1, but I really have no use for the wrong one. I do not even have any doll friends I could give it to. Everyone is into the big dolls.

      • x 1
    51. Always go with the smaller size, so a 3-4. Small wig sizing is an issue. The companies are not very consistent.

    52. I just learned to make my own wigs... I actually am going to make a few for sale, so you guys will have to vet them for me. I stick wigs on with poster tack! It works really well actually.

    53. I made Sleet's because there wasn't a wig out there that looked like I needed it to. The main part is faux fur and I attached a weft of synthetic fiber to the back so it's really long. Then I sewed in strands to the main part of the wig so its sort of like David Bowie's hair as Jareth in Labyrinth, but white and the strands in the main part of the wig are just as long as the weft in the back. Iwa-Xine wears a Monique pretty girl in the colour electra as he's a Dryad and the colour of that wig was just perfect for him.

If you think these guys are hard to wig, they're much easier compared to my Batchix Clever Littles, Prasiolite and Rhodolite. They take a straight up 3 wig and I'm not kidding when I say finding the right style/colour/size is a nightmare job. I've commissioned someone in my local doll group to make them wigs and it'll be wig trial #3 *sigh*.

    54. Thank you, nancy! :celebrate I will put ordering Metato a wig cap on my list of things to buy.

      • x 1
    55. Monique wigs won't work for me because they don't seem to have pure white wigs, only that white blonde which won't do. :( My Crow's wig seems to fit fine. I've only put it on him a few times though because I didn't really like the grey wig color on him (he's a blue Crow, not grey).

    56. I use Volks Pittato Wig Stopper (Home :: Dollfie® Supplies :: Care Items :: View All Care Items :: Pitatto Wig (Doll Wig Stopper)) for keeping the wigs on my Nenda, Idrial, and Rick. They have worked out really well - no residue left on the resin, no lost wig hairs. Though I did find out that Rick's wig needed to be cleaned - the wig cap stained his head so he's currently hairless until I decide to line the cap or not - the stains got into the edges of his sealant so I want to prevent further staining.

    57. Oh here's my faery. Named him Lirial. Not the best pic cause the lighting isn't great.
