Short hair or long hair?

Jun 13, 2020

    1. I have a wig that goes to my girl's feet (SD sized) and she needs a little velcro to not lose her hair 24/7!

    2. I don't much like short but I don't hate it if I could ever get it to work. I prefer shoulder length and really long hair myself. It's funny though, no one makes really long hair or if they do, it's only in like three colors.

    3. I like longish hair, usually around the shoulders. Kind of like the lob (long bob) that’s so popular right now. I do like really long hair on my Lati Yellows, like down to the hips, though. I’ve always had long hair, so I think that might play into my preference a little.

    4. Long hair can be really nice to look at but I absolutely hate taking care of it. That's why probably neither me nor my dolls will ever wear hair that's much longer than chin length.

My first doll actually had long curly hair for the first few days and I absolutely loved the way it looked on him! But it didn't take long until I was seriously annoyed by it, it's just way too unpractical. I was constantly worried about ruining his wig and I feel like it really held me back from fully enjoying my doll. Short hair just makes me feel way more comfortable.

    5. I have only long hair wig, but I want to try short one because of conveniance, when I travel for instance.

    6. Long hair, maybe? I don't have anyone with super short hair, though I tried to figure out a shorter one for Ara. (Had a real hard time finding anything that'd fit the criteria of short, curly, and dark purple. Ah well.) I sewed his current wig, have yet to trim it, and I'm a little tempted to keep it at a bit past shoulder length? And then Nova has a shoulder length-ish wig (hard to tell if it falls to her shoulders when she doesn't have a body and thus no shoulders!) so there's that.

I, however, am keeping my hair under an inch long these days! I used to have it down to my mid-back as a kid, and went shorter and shorter... I do sometimes miss being able to style it, though. Maybe that's why I keep going for long hair on the dolls.

    7. My opinion is all dolls like humans: somebody looks great with long hair, but with short hair looks... not so good ) And other side - short hair looks good and long hair not...
What about me: I prefer the long black hair on my boys

    8. Haha too much truth. The brushing is absolutely horrendous sometimes.

I can't stand if it's too short though unless it's a shaved look. I have seriously tried, but I always find one in a similar color to replace it, if I haven't made one.

It's sad but as much as I enjoy purchasing wigs, I find making them connects me better so I do both now. And as much as I can't do short for very long, I still find myself with a plethora of wigs that are. Is two bins of wigs too much? Lol

    9. I have long hear for my dolls mostly, and for girls, and for boys

    10. I prefer long hair on my dolls, shoulder length at the shortest. I keep my own hair pretty short because I find long hair drives me crazy. So I guess I am living vicariously through my dolls. I don't have to wash, condition and comb through the wigs on a daily basis like I would with my own hair, so the longer the better on my dolls!

    11. I absolutely love how short hair looks on my doll, I think it suits her and looks overall so pretty

    12. I love them both! I think it's amazing how changing from long to short or short to long can bring a whole new personality out of a doll!

    13. For dolls, I think part of the fun is changing the hairstyle whenever you want! I hope to have several wigs in the same color for my dolls so they can have short/long as the outfit or circumstance demands. I definitely want at least one doll with floor length hair!

For myself, I have wavy hair that I keep quite long (middle of the back or usually longer). I love the look of a short bob, but with my hair type it would end up a mass of curls and I think I would look pretty silly (and even younger than usual, which would be bad as despite being in my 30s I am frequently mistaken for a teenager X) ). Also, I would like to vicariously enjoy fancy hairstyles through doll wigs. I have a very sensitive scalp so I can't really do anything beyond a basic ponytail without getting a headache. But I love the look of complicated braids.

    14. It depends on the character but if possible I like to have my girls in short hair for the very same reason lots of others have stated, it makes dressing/posing/playing easier.

    15. Love this thread, I really love long hair on my boys and fancy hairdo's on my girls. Just the fantasy look on guy bjd's is just awesome.

    16. I'm with my dolls... as I am in real life xD I prefer short hair on girls and longer hair on boys, so most of my characters reflect that one way or another.

    17. It fully depends on the doll and their character. I do love long hair wigs and I do also love certain short haired wigs too. Though admittedly I get a bit nervous handling my long haired ones, fearing that I'll mess them up.

    18. Most of mine have short hair...it's just easier to deal with and less of a hassle xD I wish I could like long wigs but I find they get tangled so easily and it's hard to brush them out when the hair just comes out of the wig caps :/

    19. I love long hair... but my dolls keep demanding short! :...( I have one doll who will tolerate HALF long hair - she has an undercut. That's it! That's the best I can bargain for! It's very frustrating.

    20. I love long, wavy hair on my girl dolls and short, undercut styles on my boy dolls! Though I do change their wigs pretty often, so they definitely end up trying several styles.

Up til now, only my boy has found a "permanent wig", because time and again, I end up thinking it is the best for him. It's a faux fur black modern undercut rather basic style that looks very good on him. I love it so much on him that none of his other wigs, not even his custom one, can replace it for long. XD If I didn't plan another boy doll, I would have already put all his other wigs for sale, instead they are hanging in to see if some may fit a future head.

However, I do want fancier updo for my girls, which motivates me to learn wigmaking, so I can add braids, and beads, and ribbons or perhaps do one of the impressive and impractical "boat" styles of the rococo period...

But. One thing at the time. XD

    21. I prefer long hair :XD: the longer the hair the more magestic and feminine the look is. Although short hair is very cute sometimes too.

    22. Long hair, usually without a fringe/bangs for the girls and short hair for the boys. I have always preferred that in real life too although there are definitely certain people who pull off the opposite with stunning results. Wow, I sound so traditional. Eugh.

    23. I love short hair and curls. I dont have any bjds with hair right now. Currently looking at wigs and I’m loving the shorter hair. My hair went from long, to pixie to undercut bob. It’s mostly shaved now.

    24. I love long/ medium length hair on my dolls. I love braiding and brushing my doll's hair, and, though I've tried, I can't do that on short hair.

    25. Long!

    26. I like longer hair but can't style hair to save my life (doll wigs or my own hair).

    27. SUPER LONG HAIR GIRLS AND BOYS

      • x 1
    28. Both depending on the character. I have a tendency to make my girls have long hair and boys with short. Although most of the long wigs catch my eyes.

    29. I love short hair on dolls...and myself:lol:

    30. I don’t have a preference. My 1/3 Azone has long rooted hair in a princess cut. She’d look really cute with a shoulder-length bob, but I’m not going to modify it. The DDS I’m interested in both have short bobs, but if I got them I would probably pick up some medium and long wigs with waves or curls for one of them.

    31. I also don't really have a preference. I really like long pretty wigs, but I also like cute short ones. It all depends on the character or aesthetic I would go for.

    32. I like both long and short hair for my dolls, depending on the character and the doll. Some of the men have long hair, and some of the women have short hair. Jin has one long and wavy and one that's a bob and trades off depending on what she's wearing or the weather. My hair is currently about shoulder length, which is long for me. I'll probably get it cut back to chin length once winter is over. Or before that if I get tired of dealing with the length.

    33. I suppose I do prefer long hair on my girl dolls. But longer wigs are definitely a hassle. Currently my gal Naoru has a very luxurious and long wig, but I keep it braided most of the time for a more elegant and dainty look. I also invested in wig spray, which helps a ton.

In general, for boys too, I prefer the wigs to be long enough frame their face, so my boys' wigs are still boy styles, but with long bangs, and no cropped hair.

I have almost always kept long hair myself haha. I don't have the bone structure or face shape for short hair :sweat

    34. I think I like the idea of long hair, but have to agree that short hair makes the doll much easier to manipulate without having to fuss with the hair getting in the way--plus, I think short hair is really cute, lol, so thus far it's all shorter hair for me

    35. Long hair all the way on both boys and girls :)

    36. As for myself, I prefer shorter hair for my dolls (boys and girls) though finding shorter styles is usually tricky and that's why currently all my girls have long hair. I've tried some shorter styles on them but they were very puffy and didn't look real or they were made by me and I do not consider myself very good at wig making.
I was lucky enough to find a custom made short hair for my only boy in the past and I don't think that miracle could happen again in a near future (specially because custom made wigs are so expensive, but totally worth it).

    37. Long for me and I prefer long/medium for my dolls, but its not set in stone (except if I ever get boy dolls they will always rock it long:D).

    38. Do curls count? I seem to lean towards hair with nice medium-large curls ^^;; Plus on the long side too, which kinda matches the length of my own hair atm. I wouldn't be opposed to finding shorter wigs if I think it suits my dollies, though! It'd certainly be easier to maintain, hehe

    39. I like long hair but short hair is a whole lot easier to deal with ..but idk I guess it's just me about wanting long hair on my dolls ..I think I might have only one or two short hair wigs then I have a pink and black pigtail wig that the pigtails detach from it but me I like long hair maybe about to the middle of the dolls back leaght

    40. Almost all of my dolls have long hair, either due to them coming with it or because I don't know how to cut it. I'm not good with styling wigs or hair, so all of them are left with long hair. I do find long hair to be quite pretty and since these are all dolls, they won't feel encumbered by long hair.

    41. Overall it depends on the character the doll is portraying; I have one with (very) long hair and one with short hair. I like the look of dolls with long hair, but when it comes to actually handling the dolls, short hair is easier to deal with and I prefer it in those moments.

Personally, I have short hair (cut about to the middle of my ears usually or just above). I don't really care to do anything with my own hair, but I love the idea of having multiple wigs in different styles for my dolls, so I don't think my own hair habits really affects my doll wig choices.

    42. Short hair, it's easier to tidy:)

    43. I've been in the hobby for 14 years but somehow pretty much all my dolls until last year had short hair. First I had all boys, who all had short hair (longest was shoulder-length). Then the girls all also had short hair, minus one girl who had very curly hair and a natural fur wig so it was still pretty easy to style (it was supposed to look like a mess). I finally had a girl with long synthetic hair and was like holy moly managing this much hair is just such a PAIN. It was heavy too, so it was liable to whip her head around. I eventually chopped off enough hair to make it shoulder length, haha. Don't think I want one that's longer than that ever...

    44. I only collect male dolls and the majority of them (about 98%) have long hair. I'm calling it long if it's past shoulder-length. I have 2 dolls with ankle length hair, 2 with hair to their mid-calf, a good number with hair past their waist, and a huge amount with hair between mid-shoulder blade to their waist. Their hair length, colour and style depends entirely on what their character demands.

My hair is to my waist and I've always had long hair although this is currently the longest I've managed to grow it (my hair grows very slowly). I like long hair on men so that possibly somewhat colours what my characters end up with. But if someone truly wants/demands short hair, then that's what he gets.

    45. I tend to use synthetic wigs nowadays, and I have a variety of lengths on my dolls. I find I never go much shorter than shoulder length because even the finest synthetic hair turns out to be very fluffy and hard to really flatten down well. The fiber for mohair and fur wigs definitely scales well, but I like to change out the wigs on a whim so it's harder to me to personally justify a hardcap or custom wig.

Since I have had long hair myself for a while, and have also wrestled many a cosplay wig, I don't find it particularly difficult to manage long hair on my dolls--and I find it much easier to style them to hide the wig cap itself. Finger detangling and a good synthetic conditioner have been super helpful. Also, a metal toothed pet comb for styling. Plastic combs often have seams on the teeth that will just shred and stretch fibers the more you comb them, making the wig even more of a hassle to deal with.

Of course, I rarely work with tightly-curled wigs and those are very difficult to manage when long, so hats off to anyone who has the skills.

    46. I have short hair and I prefer short hair on dolls, just because I like wigs not getting knocked off all the time. They're also a pain to maintain. One of my girls has hair that goes down to her ankles and it has two small braids in the wig, and it's such a nightmare taking her off the shelf because inevitably the hair gets messed up and I'm terrified of ruining the braids. Still, some of my characters have long, pretty hair, so I buy long wigs anyway.

    47. I prefer short hair because long hair is hard to maintain. Also, i have this really cute backpack but the long hair just covered it all up. I also might be biased because I have short hair in real life haha

    48. I love long hair but the wig has to fit perfectly or it starts to slide off... or accidentally yanked off. Unfortunately, its easier to handle a doll with short hair so I'm always trying to balance the two lengths to a happy medium.

    49. short hair is easier to manage especially in 1/4th scale but i do love some long hair looks!

    50. Most of my doll is in 75cm, I only choose short hair.

    51. I love both long and short, regardless of the gender of the doll, but maintaining long hair is a royal pain. As much as super long Miku-level hair looks amazing, I don't think I could keep it looking presentable.

    52. Originally I pictured my doll with long hair. Had no interest in long wigs. I surprised myself and ended up with a long wig! It really suits her. I personally have short hair and I do think that influenced my mindset.

    53. Short hair 100%. I love to redress/ restyle my dolls and I hate having long hair get in the way. I also don't love brushing/ styling wigs, it's more of a chore than a fun activity for me. Funnily enough, I have long hair that gets in the way often... I have been thinking of chopping a bunch of it off!

    54. This is an interesting topic. So for the first 8 ish years in the hobby I'd say I preferred short hair on all my dolls. I find it stylish and easy to wear for them, but then at a certain point I started to choose long hair and now I have lots of dolls with longer hair. I guess my answer is just that given enough time I will change my mind.
My hair as well was mostly short but sometimes longer :XD:

    55. I like both, it depends on the character of the doll, and I sometimes switch between long and short for the same doll. My own hair is long. Flyaway strands drive me a little bit crazy, so I try to look for easily controlled wigs.

    56. I love in long hair or custom short hair.
      So I bought all…..:thumbup

    57. I perfere short hair.

    58. ohgosh, all my females have insanely long hair >w< but my males have super short hair, i like both!

    59. Short hair! Shoulder length or above!

Just as you said; I think it makes it muuuuuch easier. I’d be willing to have a doll with long hair if it really fit the theme, but they’re much more of a hassle to handle.
Out of my 13 dolls right now, only 1 of them has hair longer than her shoulders- and i’d love to keep it that way, lol

    60. I love long hair but they are a pain. My dolls stand/sit in long hair and when I play with them they are in short hair.
