Short hair or long hair?

Jun 13, 2020

    1. I've realized that I love short hair on my girls as it makes posing/dressing/playing with etc. so much easier in my opinion.

When it comes to your dolls, do you prefer them in short hair or long hair? Any thoughts as to why?

And as for bonus questions: Do you have long or short hair? Think that could play a factor in your preference? (I know it does for me :XD:)

    2. Short hair for the same reason in both me and my dolls : it's so much easier to maintain! Although so far between me and my dolls it's all boys, so that may change once the girl arrives, since I do kinda want to play with making a longer wig!

    3. Both! It totally depends on the character. Amir has the longest hair, it’s almost to his knees. Marley has the shortest hair. I used flocking on hers instead of a wig to make it look shaved. And the others have everything in between!

My own hair is mostly shoulder length with one side shaved so obviously I couldn’t even decide long or short on my own head. :XD:

    4. Both too! It depends of the doll, character, and my mood
I have a doll with her hair to the ground, and an other with really short hair, and nearly everything in between.

I have long hair and I don't think it plays a factor in my prefence for my dolls.

    5. Long hair all the way for me and my dolls. I only have a few dolls who will have/do have short hair. Long hair is just so pretty to me, so much more you can do with it. theres just spmething about long hair falling around the face. So pretty. I have medium length hair though. If i have it any longer i get awful headaches from the weight. And it is a huge pain to take care of.

    6. I like both on my dolls. I personally have long hair and find it much easier because of less washing and heat drying and styling. I am a ponytail, bun girl with a pencil, when it gets in the way. I had a pixie cut in the 70's and since my hair is curly I would wake up looking crazy headed and had to style with product and heat everyday. Way less work long for me, the weight of my hair tames the curl.

    7. I like middle length hair on my dolls, around shoulder length. I really want to have a shorter one, too, maybe around chin length or barely covering the ear.

I find it interesting that I don't like long hair though. I thought about buying one which looked so beautiful, but it would've been around knee length (which I realized quite late) and that was a no-go for me.

My hair is approximately chest long. Sometimes shoulder length. I was thinking of cutting my hair to chin length, but I think it wouldn't suit me, so I haven't done that yet.

    8. Long hair for dolls is my personal preference, but whether I choose to go for a long or short hairstyle really depends on character, my preference aside. So far, all my dolls have long hair but I'm planning 2 with short hair.

My own hair? Short and even shorter sometimes. I kept on changing my hairstyles and colors pretty often until recently. But last time my hair ended up seriously damaged by dye. It taken awfully long time to repair the mess and then I just couldn't get enough of looking at my again beautiful shiny hair. So I decided to let them grow. But I'm starting to be quite tired of long hair now. I'm going to return to short styles soon.

    9. My collection fashions both, I love the weight of longer hair, but i love styling the shorter hair.

    10. Long Hair - All my girls have long hair, and my msd and smaller boys have shaggy fur wigs, but they are not that short. All my SD males have very long hair. I have always loved long hair on guys. I have seen a few short haired SD dolls that look amazing, and sometimes I wonder how my boys would look like that, but I think I would just go back to them wearing long hair.

I just think long hair on dudes is hot, if a guy has amazing luscious long hair and beautiful eyes, I am done for! :love

I have fairly long hair? It goes midway down my back. I am trying to grow it even longer.

    11. Most of my dolls have short hair, and so do I. A couple have long hair but the vast majority don’t. Most of my dolls are boys, but my one girl has short hair. My own hair is really short.

    12. Depends on the character. Most of mine are guys and have no longer than shoulder length, if not a little beyond that actually. But I've got designs on having a few historical characters from Medieval Korea [Goryeo]. So, I'll be going a little longer than usual for them. Kind of. I've got a wig on order for the first character doll, who is due to come in September, which goes to about the typical length I pick for my dolls. I'll likely go a similar length for the next character in mind, but the girl will have long hair. I might have to look at one that I can style up, however, so she might not have super long hair just so there isn't an abundance to fight into a bun.

My hair is currently long, but as soon as I'm able it'll be going about shoulder length.

    13. Depends on the fiber. I hate long synthetic wigs because of how messy they are, so for those I prefer short synthetic. But I love long mohair wigs. So depending on what the character is supposed to have is what fiber to have for their wig.

    14. I prefer long hair on my dolls, most especially long alpaca wigs. My own hair just grows to a certain point and then breaks off, so I’ve never been able to have beautiful long hair. I suppose I live vicariously through my dolls, in that way  That being said, I have some dolls with shorter wigs, too, mainly because they’re made of soy or viscose, and those just don’t produce super long wigs

    15. I skew towards short hair because ever since I was a kid I hated when my dolls' hair got all tangled!

Short hair is just easier to take care of, especially with synthetics. My long-haired dolls at the moment have natural fiber.

    16. I like both, lets me change the pace a bit! In real life, I have partial alopecia so my hair is also a wig/piece and I can do the same as my resin kids ;D

    17. Same. I can't get my hair past a certain length. Long hair is definitely my preference. All my current dolls have long hair since I can't have it myself. I'm a cosplayer so I don't have many issues with long doll wigs tangling. They're not nearly as bad as some of the cosplay wigs I have. Besides some anime character dolls I'd like to make, all the dolls I'm planning will have long hair.

    18. I have super long hair (past me bum!) But I think it depends on the doll, really. What fits best with their character and style. I went with shoulder length(waiting for arrival) for my boy, Fânpàn. But I plan to go super long with my next doll. (Leaning towards Native American style!)

And I would definitely love a shaved look, too, down the line!

    19. I prefer long hair, I myself have always had long hair; at one point it was butt-length, but I hate the feeling of heat/sweaty-hair so I've kept it at shoulder length since I turned 27-ish (I'm 39 now). Most of my dolls have long hair as well, but I find that because these kind of dolls can wear wigs, I'm willing to try a lot of lengths/colors/styles. I'm one of those few people who love changing hair styles on my dolls (even if just temporarily) because it is possible and easy to do, unlike with actual human hair, which takes forever to grow back. I love doll wigs for that reason, I can just switch the hair out whenever I feel like it, and not have to worry about damage, growth, or baldness. Lol! (:

    20. Mostly of my dolls have short hair, but the only one currently with long hair has really long hair. I just pick out what I think suits their character best. Oh, and my hair is currently shoulder length, but I am going to try growing it out because I'm never had it long.

    21. My dolls range from bald to short, medium, and long hair. I don't have a preference so long as it suits them! I've had hair of all lengths. Usually I grow it out, get it cut off and donate it, and grow it out again.

    22. I really like long hair, to me it feels easier to style than short hair.

    23. It really depends on the character. Mostly I prefer long hair, but I like short hair, too. :)

    24. Especially on dolls, I prefer the aesthetics of longer hair. Depending on the fiber, shorter hair can look very fluffy at the roots since it doesn't weigh itself down as much

    25. I love trying all lengths and styles. It's fun to try different styles and colors I know wouldn't work with my own hair which is very fine and resists styling. Wigs are one of my favorite parts about dressing up my dolls. :)

    26. I really like long hair (on my dolls and real people). Even a lot of my big guy dolls have long hair....and are often mistaken for girls. It’s just a personal preference I guess. I have long hair myself (haven’t cut it in over 10 years) and absolutely hated it when I was younger and had to have it cut shorter. It can be a bit of a pain to deal with though (referring to both dolls and myself).

    27. I don't really have a preference for either. It's just whatever fits my specific doll/character :)

    28. I find shorter hair easier. Especially if I want to show off their clothes! Many times I have spent ages making a piece of clothing just to put it on a doll and have her long hair cover up all the details :doh

Buuuuuut I do love the long hair for the looks! Especially for certain characters. It's worth the hassle!

    29. It depends on their character, but I tend to default to long, because I love long hair, and have long supported the assertion that hair should be "long enough to run naked through". Besides, you can do so much more with long hair than you can with short hair - braid it, curl it, straighten it, wear it up or down, style it elborately, or just leave it be....

My own hair changes according to whim. I grow it out long, suddenly decide to cut it short, then let it grow out again. So, it can be anything from waist-length to short-back-and-sides, depending where you catch me in that cutting/regrowing cycle.

It is currently middling-long but might get shorter soon because I have about six months of regrowth at the roots since the last time I went blonde and I'm considering just trimming it back to my natural colour and let it grow out again from there.... Then again I might use up the two pack of blonde dye I have sitting in the bathroom and take it all back to blonde again... or possibly I'l go back to bright green like I had it a couple of years ago... or... or...or... I think most of my friends think of me as being long-haired because that's the most comon state of play.

    30. I think for me it really depends on the character. I’d say that I like the long look as long as it’s a fur wig. I’ve found the fur wig really captures the look I like and that the normal fibers are harder to work with for me. In terms of short or long, I think they’re both a lot of fun! My own hair is kinda in between so it’s kind of unrelated. :XD:

    31. I love the look of short hair on the girls, but bummer is I really find making short hair wigs difficult

Can someone perhaps advise on a wig artist with nice short hair wigs?

    32. I love having longer hair on my dolls - i don't mind cute bobs or anything, but I tend to avoid more pixie cut styles for my dolls. To me a lot of the shorter styles make them look top heavy in a way I don't like. I just think long hair is pretty and often floofy and I just love the way it looks! I might try a shorter, curled wig on one of my dolls in the future - but for the time being they all have at least bob-length hair.

My hair itself is a bit long right now (an inch or two past my shoulders), but I had a period of time where I had a very short pixie cut (I used to bleach my hair a lot and I wanted a fresh start to happier, healthier hair). I absolutely hated it and my self esteem was very low during that time. I think it's turned me off of short hair in general for a while.

    33. Hm, I have a couple of girls who are bald, to one boy with hair past his knees. His is the longest in the group for the moment. (I have the Volks Rapunzel wig to try out on someone! :evilplot:)

I used to tend more toward short hair. I had a lot of girls in bobs! But now I'm tending toward long hair. My focus has shifted to boy dolls and most of them seem to wear long hair, mid-back or longer. It's just fun to style and braid and drape over one eye. There are some exceptions of course. :)

As for myself, I have had all lengths of hair: undercuts and pixies, to down past my hips, and many things in between. I change it a lot as the mood strikes me.

    34. Both! Emie and Lorina have either down-to-the-butt long or short bob wigs depending on the point in their story the doll is meant to be portraying. I think they look cute either way. Ilari is two separate dolls and the MSD kid version has short hair while adult SD has mid-back length, so he's both too.

I've got short hair myself. It's curly and heavy and annoying when I let it grow out and I just prefer not to deal with it. Switched my girls' long wig styles from curly to wavy for similar reasons. I barely even move my dolls! How do they tangle and frizz so easily??

    35. If the doll is large enough I love how short hair styles look! Personally? I always go for long hair on my own dolls, I just like having enough hair to play with and style if I wish.

    36. Long hair! The longer, the better. My hair is to my waist, used to be longer.

I would actually love to find a silver or white version of Chii’s hair from Chobits! No wigs are ever long enough. My current fave only goes to the knees.

    37. I like both! I absolutely love the look of long wigs but I’ve found small bits of hair get caught in the joints so easily and they can look messy if you just blink at them the wrong way lol:| short wigs are more manageable though!

    38. I like both, but I usually go with what suits the character I'm making.
I feel this soooo hard. I need an extremely long black one for the doll I'm planning to base on the character in my avatar

    39. I think it depends on the character’s personality, but I prefer longer hair.

The hair stuck in joints is a too real problem.

    40. I tend to skew toward long hair for both my boys and girls. Ever since I can remember, I've been attracted to long hair on real people so that most likely influences my choice of hair length for my dolls. Only one has short hair.

    41. Long hair on dolls for me has proven to be more of a hassle than anything. I say, as the doll in my PP has long hair haha. But I've changed her wig now, I just need to update stuff... I find short or medium/shoulder length wigs to be best for me. Brushing long hair is also the worst thing- it always just frizzes it out!! So I stick with short/medium... as well as mostly fur wigs.

    42. I LOVE long hair! On other people's dolls. I have zero patience for dealing with long wigs on my dolls. I have like, two. And only because one of them is waiting for her 'everyday' wig and the long one will only be for occasions. The other is a ponytail I just made and I'm crying because I don't know how I'm going to take care of it.
After that the longest hair I have on my dolls is about shoulder-length. And a lot of them have very short hair.

    43. It depends on the doll-- I prefer Vince in longer hair-- not super long, but I tend to like him with something shoulder-length, though he's got a really nice short wig that's his until someone comes along who it suits better. Billy I prefer with short hair, though I've tried him in long hair-- he's the only one who I like to keep short all the time. Pete's got shoulder length hair now but I'd like to play with something jaw-length on him. Marigold I tend to like in long hair, though she's usually in an updo.

Jack's going to need something around shoulder-length, though he might have a slightly shorter 'modern' wig as well, and if I shell his husband he'll be the same, but even at its shortest Jack's hair has some length.

As for me, my hair is so long that if I didn't put it up, I'd sit on it. Like, it can't even be in a low pony without being sat on. So... my tastes run long on the whole.

    44. I love long hair. Probably too much lol. All my dolls but one have cartoonishly long hair.

    45. I feel like it depends on the face shape, gender, eye color/shape, and the general facial expression of the doll. I like longer wigs for my dolls, but longer hair makes it easier to style, pin up, or braid.

    46. I personally love long hair! :chibi
But I wouldn't say any of my characters actually have crazy long anime hair (usually shoulder length to mid back length).
Probably because I couldn't stand to draw so much hair!

For my SDs I only have one long wig which doesn't really suit or fit any of my dolls (both existing and planned).

For my YoSD I prefer the long fur wigs over the wig-fiber type wigs.
Fur wigs are so fun to style and they look cute and fluffy!
I feel like I would get them all fur wigs if I could get the right lengths and styles

    47. 100% agree with you that short hair helps getting the dolls dressed. For me it really depends on the doll though. I can’t seem to move away from long hair even though it is so much work and requires way more maintenance. I always gravitate to long wigs over short.

    48. Variety. Variety, variety, variety.

      Have I said variety yet?:XD:

Seriously, though—the length of each of my bjds' hairstyles has been very much dictated by their character. I've got one with short, semi-shaven sides with length on the top, another with super-long straight silver locks practically to his crack, and then quite a blend of everything in between. Hime cuts running just past the shoulders, curly locks in varying lengths and colors. Short, long, wavy, straight, bangs, no bangs—they're all a little different.

My own hair style and length really don't have an impact on the hairstyles and lengths of any in my crew. For myself, I just prefer manageable—long enough to put back to keep it out of my face when I'm not styling it for a special occasion, yet short enough to keep my head from feeling weighed down by that extra hairy heft.:3nodding::thumbup

    49. Both on my dolls!! Ness is going to have short hair with an undercut, dacrya I’m leaning more and more towards flocking her head and causing that instead of a wig, because it’s a look. Dia is going to end up woth a loooong braised wig. And if I make chromis, to complete the group, he’s going to have luscious locks. Aura is really high femme and wears her hair waist length, and rowena’s is like hers but fill of flowers.

Mine has never been shorter than two inches past my shoulders, and was past my waist (36 inches of hair!!) before my last haircut. Now it’s roughly to my waist.

    50. It depends entirely on the character. Most of my dolls wear short hear. Being guys and pre-existing characters and such. However, one has shoulder-long hair or longer (he can change his appearance), and if the other one portrays an elf, he also wears very long hair. My ladies both have long hair.

    51. style wise I always prefer long hair, and I can't even tell you why. however on dolls I prefer a more mid length hair. I used to buy loooooooooooooooooooooong wigs for my dolls, they looked like they had extensions on extensions on extensions. my doll was practically a giant clump of hair and it was tiring.

    52. I think I have a good mix of short and long hair.
My dolls are based on my OCs and I decide the length of the hair based on their character.

I used to had really long hair! When I turned 16 I ruined my hair with bleaching and cut everything off. Now they're shoulder long and it feels more like me to have short hair. They're copper-red what perfectly fits my personality.

    53. Long hair, honestly cause I just love brushing it. When I bought my first SD, I actually cackled when I realized I'd get to comb a wig that was nearly as long as he was tall.

    54. In my actual collection I have a pretty even split between characters with long hair versus characters with short hair! But boy do I prefer short hair—way easier to take care of, and I’m less likely to spend time making sure there are no fly-away stray hairs during photoshoots.

    55. I really love both . There’s no way I would be able to stick to one length haha. Wigs are one of my favorite part of the hobby !

      • x 1
    56. Hmmm:huh?: It depends on the aesthetic you are developing for that doll.

    57. Most of my dolls have long hair, just like me. It just so happens that I have always liked long hair and can do many beautiful hairstyles. And sometimes with the help of a hairstyle, you can even make a slightly different character for a photo. And my favorite doll generally has several long wigs of different colors so that you can change her image. But I also have dolls of a girl with short hair: but this is due to the kind of character I described for these dolls.

    58. Most my dolls have long hair, but that’s because I struggle to find a short wig that I like...I have the image how I want it but just can’t find it. And I’m not a super crafty person, so I doubt I’ll make a good one myself. I really do want a short wig for my cat girl.

    59. Short, which is unfortunate because there's only about 3 styles of short wig you can buy without selling your soul for them. :sigh I just think short styles look cuter, plus whenever I have a doll with long hair I get flashbacks to having fashion dolls as a child and immediately tangling their hair irreparably.

I also have long hair myself and I think I kind of live my short hair dreams vicariously through my dolls.

    60. Long hair is a bit harder to keep on their head.. lol. Even with a cap, the weight of it means i always need to keep making adjustments
