This is the newest round of the sewing project. How does this work? Every round, you try to make one complete outfit (or more) that fits the theme as you interpret it. It doesn't have to conform 100% to it (feel free to be creative in your interpretation!) These projects are here to inspire your sewing and creativity. During the four weeks, you post your plans, inspiration images, progress pictures etc. It's no contest, there is no winner, we all just try to motivate each other. NOTE: Sewing Project is free for anyone to join whenever they want. New faces are always welcome at anytime during the round. This month we’re going to explore vintage fashion and those cool retro looks of the past for our dolls. The past can be more distant…or even more recently passed. It’s all up to you how far back you want to look, and how you want to interpret the theme. It’s time for our dolls to experience a little fond nostalgia! Week 1: 3/1-3/7 * Pick a doll and post their name, sculpt and picture * Decide what you want to make and post a description or inspiration images * If you use pre-made patterns, decide on which ones to use * If you make your own patterns, get started on that. If you have trouble finding or making your patterns, ask for help in the thread! Week 2: 3/8 to 3/15 * Buy or get done with your patterns * Gather your materials (fabrics, notions etc.) and post a picture/pictures of them! * Get started with the sewing and post progress pictures! Week 3 and 4: 3/16 to the end of March * Try to get the whole outfit done! * If you have time left over, make some accessories! When you are done, make sure to post a picture of the completed outfit, if possible on the doll! Coming rounds: [ Round 121 ] Monochrome [ Round 122 ] Theatre/Masquerade [ Round 123 ] Unfinished Business [ Round 124 ] Pick a Decade [ Round 125 ] Working with Scraps [ Round 126 ] Bohemian [ Round 127 ] Science Fiction/Fantasy/Cosplay [ Round 128 ] Basics [ Round 129 ] Comfy-wear/Sleepwear/Delicate Underpinnings [ Round 130 ] Unfinished Business [ Round 131 ] Punk/Steampunk/Cyberpunk (Glamrock/Jrock/Visual Kei/New Romantics) [ Round 132 ] Mori Style/Dark Mori/Cottagecore [ Round 133 ] Designer’s Choice! [ Round 134 ] Seasonal [ Round 135 ] Fairytale [ Round 136 ] Leftovers and Recycling [ Round 137 ] Vintage and Retro
This month my fashion victim (er…model) will be a new doll I adopted second-hand from the marketplace. She isn’t here yet but will be soon, and has no clothes whatsoever so is desperately in need of a wardrobe. She’s a Doll Legends Hily with a fabulous company faceup, and is destined to become my gaming barbarian character, Xandria. In true gaming fashion, I’m going to dress her in an outrageous 70s/80s cheesy and sexist fantasy/sci fi movie look. You know, the kind of thing no woman would ever be able to fight in but they magically do? It’s bound to be fun! Fashion Victim: Ridiculous inspiration: Gorgeous fabrics from sari scraps:
I love your concept @PoeticSoul and your model too! Congrats! I think the hilarious over sexy sci Fi/fantasy looks are a real treasure as long as we have a sense of humor about them. I'm not sure if I might participate this time. I have a hard time planning very far ahead and I like to sew a lot of vintage inspired stuff... But I've been wanting to dip into mod fashion for a year and haven't gotten around to it... Maybe I will. (not ready to commit) but I can't wait to see everyone's creations!
@PoeticSoul Whow ! She is so beautiful ! And I really love the fabrics you have for her ! Can't wait to see your Barbarian girl ! Like I said before, I'm very ill so I'm not at home. I have just few dolls with me. ^^' But I have Torrie (my gender fluid Unoa O on boy DZ body) and maybe they can wear some Vintage clothes... I will try to think about it after sewing my skirts. (sorry for the crappy pic...)
Love the inspo and fabrics! Looking forward to seeing what you do! Might she be your Conan Exiles character? I'd love to recreate my exile's look too once I get a handle on sewing. I'm obsessed with the impractical sexy warrior goddess vibes from the likes of Conan and Xena so it's cool to see someone who can appreciate it in the same way. You only really have to protect your boobs in battle, right? And high heels are the perfect shoes for all terrain action!
I still have yet to actually finish anything for one of these challenges (the last one I tried, steampunk/etc only got about 30% complete before I gave up) but since I really like this theme I might try and join in again! This time I actually have a bunch of pre-made patterns I bought, so maybe it will go better this time, but I'm not sure if any of them would work for retro. Maybe a stylized 50's diner waitress outfit could work? I think I have a pattern that would work with a little customizing. All my current patterns are for slim 1/4, so my model is Risel (spoilered since I think the pic might be kind of huge) Spoiler: the model doll, Risel My fabric choices are kind of slim but I'll try to make something work That really is some absolutely gorgeous fabric!! Excited to see what you'll make from it!
Gunne Sax! I wasn't sure if I'd find any inspo for this round, but GUNNE SAX... Does Aurelie already have quite a few very Gunne Sax-esque dresses? Yes, yes she does. Does she maybe need... MORE of them?? It's entirely possible...
I love this! Probably don't have time this month to participate, but I will be following progress and preparing to join an incoming one
No, I’ve never played Conan Exiles…my character is from Diablo III. As a barbarian, she doesn’t have to think a lot…just bash everything in site…so the warrior goddess look works for her in a ridiculously funny sense.
Oh My Gosh I love that faceup, it looks so beautiful and very artsy. And the fabric scraps have me so jealous; i wish i had fabric scraps even have as nice as those! Good luck with your outfit, it looks like it will be so much fun and should have a beautiful result.
Vintage and Retro - I see in front of me, a classic elegant women wearing a twinset. I have no idea why this picture came up to me, but it did and I shall try to make a twinset for my Fiona (Souldoll Finley). The bohemian style suites her very well, but soon she will have something totally different to wear, if I manage to make it .Now I shall start looking for fabrics in my boxes and drawers. Wikipedia: "A twinset, twin set or sweater-set is a matching set of a cardigan and a (usually) short-sleeved jumper or pullover. The twinset first appeared in the 1920-1940? and is now considered a classic wardrobe staple."
I don't know how Gunne Sax I'm really going to get this, but we'll see... It's at least sort of inspired? I recently got this blue cotton percale with roses on it to make Aura a dress (or several), so I'm pairing it with this pink cotton as an extra ruffle and the blue lace.
@Idoru Your material will make a wonderful dress.I love the roses. Progress report: I found that one of my old jumpers had the right look and feel for Fiona's twinset, so a part of it it has now been transformed to a jumper for her. Now I shall start with the cardigan. And of course a pencil skirt, pearls etc. are required to make the outfit complete.
Ok I think I'm ready to commit to trying to participate this round. I should make something for Mara because it's sad how I keep putting off making dresses for her. And my ideas I already had suit the Gunne Sax references I've liked. Bambicrony Bellezza Carla on Aria Doll 14 year D cup body (lol I hate writing that one out so much ) IMG 20221107 161614 — Postimages I want to make a design inspired by a Gunne Sax but I'm still undecided on what kind of dress, so I have a bunch of designs saved that if you like that sort of thing you can look: 1 Screenshot 20230301 123401 com android chrome — Postimages 2 Screenshot 20230301 123443 com android chrome — Postimages 3 Screenshot 20230301 124058 com android chrome — Postimages 4 Screenshot 20230301 124344 com android chrome — Postimages 5 O1 CN01 GDy KTd1 EZfhav9 YD0 167010366 7b58f097 7dde 44a0 a719 f34eb74ca752 487x — Postimages I saved a lot of red ones because I like a redhead in red and also I need to try not to buy more fabrics really... I think I still have plenty of a nice red on red floral. I may buy some new trims bearing this project in mind since it's about time to stock up anyway but yeah I'm not sure yet. I will decide on a plan based on what I find I have here that combines well. Actually if I'm feeling really hardcore I have a red and white vintage cotton print and no plans for it that I could use!
Thank you @Teddy I love green for them too ... I love too much And @Idoru I completely forgot to reply before your fabrics look beautiful! Can't wait to see what you come up with! I'm sure even after I pick an inspiration I'll deviate from it too. It would be fun to make a close reproduction but I'm not very devoted I guess lol.
Ohhh those inspiration photos look great! (I actually used to own that second one, by sheer coincidence... And was just thinking about how I'd love to make it for my dolls!) Redheads are fun to sew for. And thank you @JennyM and @AlisonVonderland!! I'm looking forward to seeing how this turns out. I had to put it down to go on a work trip...
I've decided I'm in a crochet mood this month, so I might try out the BJD-scale halter top recommendations I've been given and, depending on how that turns out, sew a coverup or little shrug to go with it? Not sure yet, it's my last few weeks at work before I start my cross-country move so we'll see what I end up accomplishing craft-wise this time, lmao
Well yes it's a crappy pix. XD But I would like to show you, I sewed tights for Torrie with an old colorful one I had. And I made patterns for the outfit. I want to try to make a jumpsuit shorts to go with. I had this fabric with cherries, apricots and other fruits for a very cheap price, I think it will fit the project. =)
Nice. Fingers crossed for a good result, and the shrug too. I can theoretically crochet, but have never really taken to it so reach for my knitting needles rather than a crochet hook when yarn is involved. Yay! Good luck with the jumpsuit. Teddy
@AlisonVonderland Ohhh…the Gunne Sax look is one of my favorites of all time! And your girl has the perfect look for that style. I can’t wait to see what you do with this. @Mamo a crochet halter top sounds awesome…and oh so retro! @Moonycat31 Great progress! And jumpsuit/shorts sound like fun…really looking forward to seeing it. And my new fashion victim (model) just arrived, so I’m off to happily start making one of those ridiculous shiny bra-thingies for her to do battle in. Ahhh…the life of a warrior goddess.
Well it was a very slow day at work today, so I grabbed the smallest gauge yarn and hook I had at work (not very small, honestly) and set about making a tester to practice the techniques and figure out how I'd like to do the back for a final product that would have something layered over it. I'm pleased with the results! I made the waist ties extra long so they can wrap back around to the front for a second, purely decorative, tie Round 120, retro crochet halter top tester! by Jules B, on Flickr The Resinsoul bodies are very willowy, so with this girl in mind I relied mostly on the length of the cups themselves, combined with the rather chunky-by-comparison yarn, to make a full top rather than an additional body/waist panel. I'll definitely be going down a size for my next try, but not bad at all for just working with what I had!
Well I didn't end up posting my WIP photos, but! I finished the dress (mostly, still needs snaps) today! I did not, indeed, end up with a super Gunne Sax-feeling dress... but I can always try again. There's a lot of March left, after all... I am super pleased with how this turned out, though. I raised the waistline slightly, which is a modification I've been meaning to make for ages and finally did. I'm very happy I finally did it, too! I think it sits much more nicely on Aurelie.
@Idoru I love the dress. Have bought some fabrics to make dresses in that style, but... Instead I end up with office wear Anyway, the cardigan is finished. It became a bit larger than planned but the fabric is really nice, thin and heavy. I made most of it by hand. Now I shall make a pencil skirt and try to take some nice photos.
Seems like a good start to this project. Yay! Well done - it looks very pretty on her. Looks like it's coming along very well. Good luck with the skirt Teddy
@Idoru Her dress certainly has that lovely sweet innocent look to it, and it looks adorable on her. @JennyM That sweater set is turning out beautifully. I’m really looking forward to seeing her in a pencil skirt!
@JennyM Thank you! The officewear is turning out well, too! It looks so cozy--just what I'd need if I were still in my old office, which was always super cold. @Teddy and @PoeticSoul Thanks! I feel like I strayed from my inspiration quite a bit... but still ended up with something that's in her style. As if she needed another dress, but still... It was fun to do, at least.
@Idoru it looks lovely! I really like the contrasting collar. @JennyM she's going to be ready for the boardroom! Chief executive officer
This took a surprising amount of time, finesse and infinitesimal stitches to pull off, but I’m very happy with the end result. And I’ve decided that I like her in this simple look, so I won’t be adding any cloak or special headgear to it like I’d originally planned. She’s my barbarian, so simple suits her character better, and I like the way it shows off her beautiful skintone and facial tattoos. So here’s my barbarian warrior goddess, Xandria, looking like she just stepped out of the 70s/80s “Buck Rogers” era.
All projects are so cool ! I started to sew my jumpsuit but well... I have an unexpected problem now. For the first time in my life I need to buy some glasses because with my age, my eyes are a little bit tired. ^^' So it's difficult for me to continue. But I really love the project I'm sewing so I will sew it till the end but I need to make it slowly. ^^'
Yay! It came out beautifully Welcome to the world of the bespectacled (I've needed glasses my whole life), and good luck with continuing the project. Teddy
Both my sisters escaped needing glasses until they hit their seventies, then the need for reading glasses reared it's head. Even with my glasses, I've had to invest in a magnifier with a built-in light so I can see to sew in doll scale. Teddy
Absolutely! @PoeticSoul So beautiful! I have finished the skirt!! So much easier to sew in woven fabric. Shall try to take some pictures in better light and suitable surroundings another day with a smaller necklace etc.If Fiona will play along. She was not acting my way today.
@JennyM What a wonderful and complete look for your girl…she indeed looks very professional. You did a wonderful job on this. Well done!
@PoeticSoul, @Teddy, @Idoru, @Mamo, @SteamWitch and everyone else out there following this round. Thank You! It is a true privilege to be part of this. So fun to share problems and success. I am quite pleased with the outcome of Fiona's outfit. Even though it of course did not turn out exactly as I had planned. She borrowed the trench-coat from another Souldoll of mine for the photo, and a chair and briefcase that I made for a theme competition in a doll convension in Gothenburg some years ago.
Well I'm back with some progress! I've settled on how I'd like to do the top and got one finished. I'd still make a few changes if I made another one for this girl specifically, every time I think I've got a handle on how slender she is she surprises me lol. But with this done, it's time to think about how I'll put her coverup/robe situation together. I've got an old chiffon curtain I might cannibalize for this, haha. Sort of designed myself into a corner here by using this chartreusey yarn, but what can ya do! Round 120 retro crochet crop top! by Jules B, on Flickr
It works nicely and I love the cheerful colour. Good luck figuring out what you're doing for the robe. Teddy
Oh everyone's creations are so wonderful! @Idoru I love how your dress turned out! Those colors together are so happy avd fun! And @Mamo I think this looks awesome on her! I'm a big lover of neon and it's quite hard to integrate into a polished look but I think you've done it perfectly! Characteristic of myself, a big believer in "doing nothing" as part of my creative process... I've done nothing but good news is I'm at a point where I am trying not to buy new materials very much anyway so I'm going to dig around in my stash today and see what I think of, still bearing in mind my Gunne Sax inspos but very likely changing dolls I'll work on because I'm still a bit stuck with the girl I posted earlier and I need to iron it out organically, not force something. ((creature of chaos))
Well... After one week at the hospital I'm back with my project. And I finished it ! =) I think it fits very well on Torrie, I'm very pleased with it. ^^
That looks wonderful @Moonycat31 and what a cool fabric print you used! Alright so my updated choice of model is my Gem of Doll Kira and I've started to whip something up based on general Gunne Sax flair using materials I had here. I'm excited about this piece because the floral fabric is actually a piece leftover from a dress alteration that my international penpal sent me at Christmas! photocollage 202332318515673 — Postimages Lena could finally have a suitable basic wardrobe finished if I make this one and maybe one final dress for now, so that was a partial motivator. It will not be very long because I'm using all of the Floral fabric I have been sent, but I'm going to add cream colored long sleeves so I think it will balance out appropriately for the inspiration.
I wasn't planning on participating until next month, since I didn't really have any ideas for the theme, but then I found that Crissy doll patterns would work for 50cm Obitsus (or rather, they work for BFC Ink dolls, whose clothes fit my Obitsus). I have some fabric I've been wanting to make into a sundress for one of my girls, Dess, so I decided to use view 6 of this set. I think a pattern from 1972 counts as vintage, although the fabric isn't. I cut the dress out tonight; the only thing I changed from the original pattern was adding an extra two inches to the hem, since it wasn't as long on Dess as in the original image. The print is big, but it works surprisingly well on her.
Oh that's a nice association to have with the fabric. I had a favourite shirt from my Uni days that I wore to a friend's wedding. I couldn't bear to part with it once the collar and cuffs wore out, so kept it and (eventually) upcycled it into dolls clothes. If you want it longer, could you also add a ruffle of the cream fabric at the hem...? From what I remember, Gunne Sax dresses often had fabrics combined like that. I have that patttern set (and have had that dress cut out and half-made for about six or seven years, for my actual Crissy doll). I'll look froward to seeing how it comes out for your Obitsu Teddy
@Tira-chan yeah it looks cool ! And yes, 70's are vintage lol. I made my outfit with the 70's in mind too. ^^ Thanks @Teddy and @AlisonVonderland ! ^^
@Moonycat31 That turned out so cute! And what a sweet little print too. @AlisonVonderland I love the way you’ve combined different fabrics. Very creative in creating a wonderful overall look! @Tira-chan Oooh! I love that fabric, and the pattern you’re using is adorable. I’m really looking forward to seeing it!
@Teddy it's really fun turning clothes into doll clothes! I would have wanted to add a ruffle on the bottom hem, but the floral fabric was a much lighter weight than anything else I have and so I didn't think it would make sense to ruin the drape with something like that at the bottom this time. Luckily the dress was not too short! It just wasn't long either Thank you @PoeticSoul ! It's all done now, but I haven't taken a good picture of it on her yet, so I'll get back to that. I actually sewed it completely and then decided I hated white long sleeves for it, so I tore them out and put in shorter poof sleeves with the same dark fabric, and I think that ended up suiting the complexion of my doll better so it was worth the nightmare
I've finally bothered to take a picture of the finished dress: IMG 20230326 135403 — Postimages Here's a more clear view of the dress only because this house is really dark but at least there is light at my sewing table: IMG 20230323 220403 — Postimages I am so happy with it for her. She really needed a push for me to continue working on her basic wardrobe, and I think deciding to use her for this round gave me inspiration that really works for her that I probably wouldn't have considered, so I'm very grateful! I think I'll actually make another similar dress on my own now (different fabrics and a longer skirt because I have enough to work with) but this one being short is very playful and shows off her very long legs so it worked out for me.
(Bleh I'm double posting because I know you won't see the tag if I don't make a new post) @Tira-chan that fabric is awesome! I've had it before too my DD has a mini skirt made from it. That dress style will look perfect on Obitsu! I can't wait to see
It came out so nicely! I haven't had time to even think about starting something for this round.... Though I thought, ten minutes ago, I had finally finished a long overdue off-topic Regency doll project that has been hanging over my head for far too long, only to put it all on the doll and realize that the petticoat is over an inch longer than the dress... At least sewing a few rows of tunch around it will fix that but even so I will have to undress the doll and rethread the machine (I've been down to hand-finishing on it for the last while so the machine was last used for something completely different). Teddy
Thank you @Teddy Aw that's so frustrating... A bit like my sleeves ordeal. You can do it! I'm sure it will be gorgeous in the end.
