I always see people's dolls wearing beautiful crochet halter tops, babydolls, or bikini tops, but I've been having trouble finding a pattern for any. What do y'all tend to do, downsize a human pattern with a small hook size and yarn weight? Any recommendations for me? I was hoping to have some things ready when some incoming dolls arrive, but I don't have them yet to test on obviously so I was hoping for some wisdom. I have SD, MSD, and slim MSD girls of different bust sizes, so any patterns are super appreciated! Thanks for your time
I use the thinnest yarn I have available (Novita Cotton Crochet for example) and a 1.25mm hook. For the cups: Ch 11. Sc into 2nd ch from hook and continue down the chain in sc until you reach last chain. Make 3 sc into last ch. Turn your piece so you are working on the opposite side of the chain. Sc to the end. Turn. Ch 1, sc until you reach the middle stitch of the 3 sc you made in the previous row. Mark this stitch and place 3 sc into this stitch. Continue down the side of you piece making 1 sc into each stitch. Repeat the last row until the piece is big enough to cover your dolls breast. Then make a chain of like 50 or so for each strap that go behind the neck, you can adjust the lenght to be approriate for your needs. Tie or join by crochet the straps to the middle of the cups point. For the bodice I just crochet a chain long enough to go around the waist and turn and sc till end and turn again and so on untill it's the desired size. Join the cups in the middle of the bodice. You can also add edging or fringes if you like of course. For some reason I can't add images, I will post them below if I can get them to work. Hope this helps!
@Cyberdollie you're a hero! Thank you so much I never would have thought to account for the 3sc for the cups, I'm so grateful!

If you want it to be in scale, downsizing a human patten is the way to go. It will also gives you the most options by far when looking for ready made patterns. A good starting point is to divide the hook size by the scale of the doll. If the pattern calls for a 4mm hook, that would equal a 1mm hook in 1/4 scale, in 1/3 it could be 1,3333 etc. but a 1,25mm hook is probably the closest that is easily available. Then find a yarn that works well with the hook. This gives a starting point that is usually pretty close, but it may require some additional tweaking. Check the gauge. Multiply the number of stitches given for the gauge in the pattern by the scale you want (so 4 for 1/4, 3 for 1/3 and so on), so a pattern that originally called for 20 stiches per 10cm now requires 80 stitches per 10cm in 1/4 scale and 60 stitches per 10cm for 1/3. For a fitted garment like this you don't need to worry too much about drape, so it's pretty forgiving when it comes to density and choice of thread, as long as the gauge is right it will probably work fine. Things like sewing thread, weaving yarns, embroidery floss and for bulkier styles, crochet cotton are good options to try.
Honestly, I just start crocheting most of the time and create my own patterns using single and double crochet with the shell design for the cups. When I was learning how to crochet as a kid, it's what most barbie doll dress patterns used for the bodice XD
I’m looking for the same thing. Someone on etzy sells gorgeous crochet bodice & tops but sooo expensive. I wish there was a pattern for home use only coz I like to crochet it’s very relaxing
Have you looked at Ravelry? It's an online comunity for crochet and knitting and there's a huge number of patterns available, both free and for purchase. The advanced search function is quite good so it's easy to find what you are looking for.
Yes I did look there I’m member since 2015 there is only 4 halters & 2 crochet top for bjd. Lots of sweaters though. And I don’t think I can size down human pattern into doll one.
Even without resizing, a pattern does not have to be marketed specifically for BJD to fit. All you need is something made for a doll in the same size. Joint type has very little to do with fit. You can try to see if there are any mass produced dolls in the same size as the doll you want to crochet for and use that in your searches. As for sizing down, that can be tricky, but scaling down is not that dificult. I gave a quick guide earlier in this thread and if you are having trouble, you can always as for help in the crochet thread here on DoA. Here is the current one. Best of luck figuring it out. If you can crack it you'll have thousands of patterns to chose from.
What dolls is similar in build to RS Rong body to try to find crochet pattern for this kind of top Light Green Crochet Top Corset Cami Top Tank Top for Slim - Etsy on Ravelry? Thx! I literally went through 772 pages with crochet for any dolls there & nothing so adorable….
Something I do when crocheting or knitting for my dolls is just use smaller thread and needles. I think gauging the sizes and colors of both can be super helpful as mentioned by others previously. If you’re wanting the effect of cups, I would look up a YouTube tutorial for human sizes and then make the garment in pieces (like amiguru) then attach them appropriately once the dolls arrives and you can see how it would fit.
the cup part is just a shell stitch. You can use double crochet or maybe half double crochet to make it I believe. I didn't read the website I linked, but it has photos. I've used double crochet to make cups on barbie clothes. I used single crochet to create the rest of the top. edit 2: The rest of the top looks to be made with shell stitch too... but the shells on the bottom half of the top are upside down. Here's a dress I made for a BJD using single and double crochet (possibly triple for the skirt. I forget). I literally just made this pattern up as I went after years of making barbie outfits via pattern. The main thing you'll need to do is find the center where you want the cups to be and figure out the distance between them. The rest is pretty simple. Edit: Here's a link to one of the patterns I used as a kid/teen/etc to make bodices. There are others from this collection available on Etsy. But they are around the $13 range. You might be able to find them elsewhere for cheaper if you want a pattern to look at in person and are interested in adapting one of them to BJD size.
