Wearables Sewing Project: Science Fiction/Fantasy/Cosplay [ Round 127 ]

Oct 1, 2023

    1. How does this work?

Every round, you try to make one complete outfit (or more) that fits the theme as you interpret it. It doesn't have to conform 100% to it (feel free to be creative in your interpretation!) These projects are here to inspire your sewing and creativity. During the four weeks, you post your plans, inspiration images, progress pictures etc. It's no contest, there is no winner, we all just try to motivate each other.

NOTE: Sewing Project is free for anyone to join whenever they want. New faces are always welcome at anytime during the round.

Now it’s time to let our imaginations run wild and turn our attention to the more costume-type of outfits for our dolls. Do you have a boy who’s eager to be a Jedi, or a girl who wants to indulge in some dark forest magic, or a Troll who just needs to update his wardrobe? It can be anything really, from books, to movies, to anime…to pure imagination! And just in time for halloween too…;)

      Week 1: 10/1-10/7
      * Pick a doll and post their name, sculpt and picture
      * Decide what you want to make and post a description or inspiration images
      * If you use pre-made patterns, decide on which ones to use
      * If you make your own patterns, get started on that.

If you have trouble finding or making your patterns, ask for help in the thread!

      Week 2: 10/8 to 10/15
      * Buy or get done with your patterns
      * Gather your materials (fabrics, notions etc.) and post a picture/pictures of them!
      * Get started with the sewing and post progress pictures!

Week 3 and 4: 10/16 to the end of September
      * Try to get the whole outfit done!
      * If you have time left over, make some accessories!

When you are done, make sure to post a picture of the completed outfit, if possible on the doll!

      Coming rounds:

      [ Round 128 ] Basics
      [ Round 129 ] Comfy-wear/Sleepwear/Delicate Underpinnings
      [ Round 130 ] Unfinished Business
      [ Round 131 ] Punk/Steampunk/Cyberpunk (Glamrock/Jrock/Visual Kei/New Romantics)

      [ Round 144 ] Science Fiction/Fantasy/Cosplay

    2. New round yeah !
Don't know if I will join this time. I begun to pack many things and store them in a storage box (including my dolls) so it's a little bit difficult to sew. :/ But I will enjoy everyone's projects. ^^

    3. Oh, so the theme really fits for my current ideas to sew some Ren faire costume. :XD: It's that time of year after all! Maybe I will join... maybe not. A lot of difficulty with fatigue lately. But I'm sure everyone will make some super cool stuff this round! :D

      • x 2
    4. Okay for sure I will join this round! Lol I got busy last month and didn't do any of my plans.

This time I have a fairly simple project in mind :3nodding: I was lucky enough to find a Realpuki Roro second-hand! And she will need a cute teeny oufit! I'm thinking hobbit meets flower fairy. A yellow, flower print dress with an apron. And a pink tulip shaped hat! I'll probably use faux flower petals for the hat. Since she is so small, I'll be attaching braids to the hat, made from yarn. So it's like a wig and hat in one :thumbup I already have the fabric, flowers, and yarn! Just need to find the time lol

      • x 5
    5. Well I'm mostly finished with making clothes already but I've still got the eyelets of the gambeson to do, as well as boots and armour to make before I'm finished with an outfit, not including things which are more accessory than clothing.

    6. Just today I collected fabrics in order to sew a fantasy image of an ancient Chinese prince! And, what a coincidence - it's cosplay. The time and theme of the 127 round perfectly coincide - I think I should join the project. After all, sewing together is much more fun. I don't know if I will have time to finish all in 4 weeks - I have a lot of plans: I'm going to turn this guy (Ringdoll Sun Ce)

into this Prince Xiao Se - a character in Zhou Hunan novell "Shao Nian Ge Xing"

    7. Oh man, I have two new dolls coming soonish who will need clothes, buuuuuut...

I've been wanting to make a cosplay of one of the Legend of Zelda Great Fairies (as they appear in BotW/TotK) for my minifee Celine, Wynne, for months now. Of course, that would be more crafting and less sewing, so maybe I should think of something else... :sweat

      Regardless, here's my girl Wynne!

      [IMG][IMG]

I'm very much a sewing beginner, so I'm excited to get my Learning A Skill hat on (and see everyone else's awesome projects)!

      • x 7
    8. Once again, I'll probably be cheering from the sidelines - though I didn't even do much of that on the previous round (I think Istopped receiving notificatins again).

      Teddy

    9. Oooooh SFF, my beloved! My options are pretty open as my dolls live in a sci-fi-y universe with some fantastical touches. However, my parents are visiting later this month, and I promised everyone would be wearing pants. :XD: My current most-pantsless doll is Captain Thalassus, my Goblin Tales Cassie, so I think it's time to make some historically-inspired space pirate pants! And maybe a fun puffy poet shirt and other things, but I at least have a basic shirt sewn so that's not as pressing.

So excited to see what everyone makes this round!

    10. Since my dolls inhabit a fantasy world, I always have plenty of fashion victims to choose from. This time I’m going to make another of Poetta’s (my shironuri girl, a Volks 4 sisters Megu) story robes. This one will illustrate her story poem, “the Treasure of Mermaid Cove”.

And these are the fabrics I have access to for this particular project. As usual, I’ll be using hand piecing and “slow stitching” techniques to make this.:sweat

    11. Ahhh, what a fun topic! I'll need to think about what to commit to :sweat I've been planning to make a kimono outfit, a catboy outfit, and a dragon knight themed outfit.

    12. I would like to make a princess outfit for Anwen (FairyLand MiniFee Chloe). I don't actually have a clear image in mind, I just want her to have a pretty dress. Something late medieval or renaissance, or maybe traditional slave, hopefully going through my fabric stash will help me settle on a design. Anwen is not a princess, so this should count as cosplay.

    13. My fabric collection yielded a somewhat darker assortment than what one would normally described as "pretty". But the materials are definitely suitable for a noblewoman of some sort:
[IMG]Princess outfit - materials by helgie, on Flickr
And I settled on a design: a layered outfit inspired by the romantic "historical" fashion of late 19th - early 20th century Russia and its recreations of traditional costume for balls, theater and art. So, still in the realm of cosplay and also fairytales and fantasy.
      The outfit should include:
      - under-dress with its puffy sleeves the only part visible from under the top layers - made of light brown synthetic silk;
      - dress with over-long slit sleeves and closure in front - made of brown and dark blue heavier natural silk fabric;
      - sleeveless over-dress made of dark blue velvet and satin;
      - headdress with veil in light blue gauze;
      - neckpiece and armlets;
      - shoes, probably.
The scrap of gauze on Anwen's head was the perfect half-circle shape and size for the veil, didn't need any cutting. I'm now hemming it (by hand, augh :huh?:)

    14. I've decided I'm going to attempt some Japanese-style clothing! I think something similar to this would look really nice~

SAMURAI Men's Kimono Four Piece Set 5 Vintage MONTSUKI - Etsy Canada

I picked out some nice fabrics! I like the dark one the most. I'm thinking I'll have a base white layer, followed by the yellow/gold, and the dark blue as the main outer layer. Not sure if I'll use the red one.

    15. I'm really excited I found this thread, I live off fantasy. I'm doing an outfit for one of my shelled OCs. His name is Hel and he is a 2dDoll Snow. I had started his outfit design several weeks ago, but the only design I liked and kept was the one for his cloak, which I got fabric for and finished. Here he is:

      And his cloak:
After seeing this thread I set back to designing his top and finally came up with something I liked.
I always make my designs from scratch and browse pictures to get ideas, so here's the sketch I made:

I won't be doing anything fancy for pants so I left them out of the design, and I already have a pair I made for him so if they fit with the rest I'll just use them.
I'll be using black chiffon, lace, and polyester for his top. The belt will be lace and the rest of the top polyester, though I'm considering doing chiffon/half-chiffon sleeves with a fabric transition. The hood will probably be the same satin I used in his cloak. He wears a veil too, I just didn't bother drawing it, that will be chiffon. I plan to make the patterns in the next few days, and hopefully test them before next week.

    16. I have a lot of off topic craft projects going and all halloween-realted crafts are coming up, so I'll have to sit this one out. But I will cheer you all on from here.

There's going to be some really lovely projects, it seems! Several very interesting dolls ad designs allready.
Best of luck to you all!

    17. I really keep thinking about it so I am going to tentatively say I think I'd like to make one of the costumes of Danielle from Ever after for Marina. Here is a shabby collage :XD:

Orange is my favorite... and I really want to make some orange dresses, besides, this was one of my favorite movies growing up and I thought about it again recently. The problem is that I really would need to buy everything for it, I really don't have it already... so I'm not sure. If I can find stuff to order that I think will have the right harmony together I'll return. :dance

On the note of having to buy the materials I think I might instead opt for this dress from the same movie, for Mara instead.

This scene is very funny with the brooch :XD: I would put a different one but otherwise less difficult fabric shopping... because I found a good irridescent tafetta on Etsy already at least. Besides she actually needs the clothes.

    21. Ahhh haha, so I went to JoAnn's today and right away in the quilting cottons I found this one that will be perfectly good for a quasi-recreation of the Marguerite dress (the second one) for Mara.
      Link
I would love to use some of the tafetta that has duochrome effect and I found it at $8.99/ yd in Texas on Etsy, but then $4.99 shipping... and I thought, but what if I make it terribly... I just really, really like working with cotton. So this was $6.99/yd on sale and I'm just thrilled because in my heart I wanted it to have a gold pattern. I really can't believe it worked out so easily!
I have a pattern base that will make it very easy for this doll, so I'm looking forward to getting started. However, feeling really fussy about trim. I need to see what I have and how close I can get it already or if I should make compromises to change it a bit more.
Sorry that was long. I'm excited. I even watched the movie last night!

    22. Ooooooo, I'm loving everyone's plans and fabric choices, they're all amazing! :D

After some thought, I've decided to make Wynne a witch costume! She's a modern gal, but inspiration is inspiration, so I guess she's celebrating Halloween. I'll be basing her outfit off of Melody, from the Rune Factory series:[IMG]

I don't know why she has a zipper or what's going on with her not-so sandals, so I'm not going to worry about those parts. I'm also switching up the color scheme (and uh. We'll see on the whole "lining" thing). I went to the nearby Joann today and this is what I picked, along with some fabric and beads I had on hand:

The sparkly navy will be used for the coat and the hat (the hat will have the grey felt underneath, for some stability). The cotton gauze will form the dress underneath; I'll be using one of RequiemArt's patterns with a modification for a fuller skirt. I'm currently considering dip-dyeing the skirt a soft pink, simply because I love pink and have pink dye on hand that I've used on this fabric before. I'll use the tulle with some elastic to make a simple "petticoat" (read: tutu) using this technique. The gold crochet thread will tie the coat closed, and the gold ribbon is for the hat! I'll either use the same cotton gauze or some white fabric I have on-hand for her shawl/capelet, and I have many many many options for embroidery thread if I'm not feeling the gold. Beads are if I feel like I need some oomph, but we'll see if I add that.

You might notice I'm missing something for the fancy gold pattern around the hems. Yeah, um. I forgot to grab some while I was out. ADHD strikes again. :doh Go-go gadget speed ordering!

    23. Okey doke, folks, I have a question about the challenge. I ended up knitting a Halloween-themed dress for one of my dolls as part of a stashbusting marathon challenge on Ravelry, and I thought it might fit somewhere in the costume-fantasy continuum for this challenge, but this is sewing and the dress is majority knit! I was wondering, if I have sewn elements on an article that's mostly handknit (the skirt needs to be longer and I want to sew on some of my black fabric, plus I'd like to make some separate puffy sleeves), does it count for this sewing challenge?

    24. I'm sure others will chip in wiht thri opinion but here's mine:

I'd say it does count. I mean since the theme guideline is pretty much, "whatever interpretation YOU put on it," I don't think we're likely to quibbble about the exact propertion of sewing to other fibre-craft craft involved in making the outfit, it's not like it's entirely knit (there's already a knitting thread) or anything like that.

    25. I've done crochet pieces for the monthly projects before and nobody minded.
I've also been guilty of making rather large leaps of logic to shoe horn my projects to fit the theme on several ocations and that has also always been fine.
It's all in the spirit of the thing.

    26. In my opinion the point of these threads is just to bring us together to motivate about making doll fashions, I don't see why sewing vs other traditional methods is going to be a huge issue. I'm always busy excited to see what everyone comes up with!

      • x 3
    27. Yep. Other people articulate these things far better than I do.

    28. @JaxxCapta Everyone’s comments are entirely valid! We’re just here to encourage doll costuming and creativity in interpretation and each other! I can’t wait to see what you do with this month’s theme, and I’m looking forward to seeing your knitted parts as well.:)

And I have some progress to report. I’ve pieced together my fabric, cut the pattern, and added the basic borders to my raw edges. Now it’s time to start “slow stitching” my story pieces into the final design of this robe.

    31. Houston, we have... sewing? Which is to say, the (simple) pieces that'll go under the witch coat (please forgive old phone camera quality and Wynne's wig being ALL out of order):

Behold, the third and fourth things I've ever sewn! The skirt needs to be dip-dyed pink before I hem it, which may take me a bit to get to. I also might add a ribbon sash or something.

I also had the trim I quickly ordered come in, yay! It's a bit small, but very pretty. And sparkly.

      Next up: witch hat!

    32. @Sanar Excellent progress! Both pieces are very well done and so appropriate for him. I’m really looking forward to seeing how this outfit grows with the layers.:D

@Harmony909 That’s a great start, excellent work, and I can’t wait to see what pieces come next!:)

    34. I really hope it's okay to post here. I know I'm over a week late, but I finally bought my poor DWC-01 head an SD10 boy body after 3 (almost 4, YIKES) years. His wig is in pre-transit and he already has a pair of brown eyes. I intend for him to have a different look in the long run, but I don't have the fabrics or skills yet to make those outfits, so I looked through my fabrics and think I could whip up a quick cosplay of the character Snufkin from the Moomins for him!

The only thing I'm struggling with is tights. I have either patterns or simple diagrams to follow for the other parts of the outfit, but I'd like a pair of white tights (with the feet included, like pantyhose) to act as both socks and stain-prevention leggings since he'll have dark green pants under his long tunic. Does anyone know of a pattern/easy to draft way to make these for SD10? I'm probably just overthinking things in my excitement to get his body in, but it's the last thing I need to figure out.

Any help appreciated! Hopefully I can get the basics of his outfit done quickly, I'd love to post here with some finished pieces (even if I'm still a newbie to sewing)

    35. Try this:

They use an American girl doll as an example but the principle is the same

    36. Hello! I'm starting a little late again lol
I would love to make fae fantasy costume. I'm hoping to make a duo costume which represent angel and demon vibe. (Hopefully I can make both of them in time :o)
      Wish me luck!

    37. I'm feeling kind of productive lately so I got one of my costume done :love

Now to the demon costume one
By the way, any one have pattern for a cloak?

      • x 10
    38. Nice!

I don't usually bother with a pattern, I go with a half circle with a scoop for the neck (or a three-quarter circle, or a full crcle depending on how drapey I want the cloak to be). Just remember to make the neck scoop MUCH smaller than you think it needs to be. It's a lot easier to make it bigger if you need to than it is to fill in the gap if it turns out too big.

    39. Excellent instructions for a simple cloak, Teddy!:thumbup And @WintyGummyBear that dress does indeed look angelic. Well done!:)

    40. That is very helpful. Thank you so much!! :aheartbea

Thank you! Can't wait to finish the demon one.

    41. I haven't got much done this week, because I wasn't feeling well, but I did finish the hood so that's one less piece to complete.
It ended up a bit different then my idea, but I couldn't seem to get it to lay the way I wanted with how voluminous his hair is. So I improvised and made it simpler. I think it looks fine, but after making it I realize he may not wear it very much as it messes up his hair more than I like.
Well on to making more pattern pieces I hope.

    42. Everyone's projects are looking great! I've been lurking , but it is nice to see so many different ideas and how they come to life step by step.

      As to Anwen's princess outfit:
Time spent on actual sewing: not so much.
Time spent on embroidery: an entirely unreasonable amount.
So, good news is, Anwen now has a set of decorations: a headdress, a collar and wrist guards (is it the correct word for them?):
[IMG]Princess outfit - decorations by helgie, on Flickr
[IMG]Princess outfit - headdress-veil-collar by helgie, on Flickr
Bad news, they ate up all my free time (each piece took about 6-10 hours), so what Anwen doesn't have is anything to wear them with :doh The brown fabric in the bottom picture is just draped over her.
Fortunately, there's still half the month to go, so I will get on the shirt/underdress now.

Materials: viscose (?) brocade; cotton, acrilic 'pale gold' and rayon thread; glass beads (mostly size 15/0 Toho beads - the smallest available in the local crafts supermarket, and some larger ones), faux pearls.
[IMG]Princess outfit - embroidery progress by helgie, on Flickr
I'm not happy with the forehead net, but I'm not redoing it right now.
This type of headdress is a mix of kokoshnik (worn by married women, covers hair) and venets (for unmarried girls, doesn't cover hair), both are festive head decorations in traditional Russian costume. Apparently, in late 19th century mixed forms like this appeared in recreations of traditional costume made for the rich and nobles, including court uniform for maids-of-honor.
I've been looking at a lot of photos from the 1903 Romanovs ball, and got a better idea of what to do for outer layers. Though the number of layers went from 3 to 4, and I think that before the end of the month I will be able to finish only the 2 inner ones: the shirt/underdress and a sleeveless sarafan/pinafore. But that should already look like a complete costume. I can add to it later.

    43. Absolutely glorious! Embroidery takes time, but oh, it is with it! I would call them "cuffs" as they are decorative. Had they been armour the name would have been bracers.

I must say this round has it all. Intricate multilayered outfits, lovely fabric choices, beautiful details! I love it.

    44. Love how this look so much!

This is incredible! I should learn how to do embroidery too :D

      • x 1
    45. Perhaps get a second wig for when he's wearing the hood? One that's set solid with product, or one that you don't mind getting messed up as it's not seen with the hood on...?

      And beautiful they are too

Cuffs, perhaps? Though wrist guards works too.

      Teddy

    46. I love this! The asymmetry with the two kinds of lace is such a wonderful detail. It adds so much interest.:)

This is so gorgeous! Your embroidery is always such a treat to see, and well worth the amount of time you put into it. It makes your outfits very special indeed!:D

    47. I don't have much to report, I've been trying to get back into my hobbies after the move with... not much success, haha. But crochet has felt safe and I finally unpacked two of my dolls the other day, so I'm making progress I think. So I've got this little witch hat I made, really without a pattern just to see how it would turn out. It would be nice to get up to some sewing, but I'm also pacing myself and just doing what feels doable, yknow? So here's Marcus, my Doll Leaves Oscar, modeling what looks a bit like a low-budget, last minute Halloween costume:

(Mini tarot book is from a mini tarot set I found more than a decade ago in the little boxed novelties section of a bookstore checkout, I like collecting little books for my dolls)

If I do end up feeling up to sewing before the month is over, I think I'd like to whip up a quick cape to go with it.

    48. Good.

      Yay!

Very sensible approach. Good luck with the continued post-move settling.

    49. @Mamo I’m amazed you’re able to get anything at all creative done after a move. But I’m sure it’s relaxing and good for your nerves. And it’s really cute too!:)

    50. Good job! Crochet sounds so complicated to me. I wish I could do that too :D

    51. Guys, I did it! I'm quite happy with how they come out. Today is a cloudy day so my photoshoot is a bit dim but I really love them. It was meant to be a angel & devil vibe but I guess I read too much romance lately so they look more like couples :D

@Mamo Marcus looks so cute! :chibi

@helgie I love the embroidery! Those are some wonderful accessories :D

@Alamentine The lace is really beautiful! Very elegant piece.

    53. Yay!

Still cheering from the sidelines and will scroll through pictures etc, but only online sporadically and typing hard as I am bruised down one side from a fall down the stairs, yesterday, and mostly confined to laying on my other side, which is not condusive to laptop use, so I'm sorry if I don't comment much/at all foer a while.

    55. @WintyGummyBear Congrats on a job well done! You’re pair look great together in their new outfits.:)

@Teddy Oh noes! Poor Teddy…how awful for you. Get well soon, dear friend.:pout:

    56. More progress! Hakama pants are complete! :D This was a challenging piece and I'm really satisfied how they came out. I was worried they might end up being too bulky over the kimono but I think it works! He's on his way to becoming a fancy samurai :chibi Just a few more pieces left!

    57. @helgie Wow, those beaded pieces are absolutely gorgeous!! Well worth the time and effort, in my opinion (and just plain inspiring to look at).

@Mamo What a cute hat!!! Always love seeing some good crochet, and I'm really impressed that you made it without a pattern!

@Alamentine That hood is g o r g e o u s. I love the lace and the way it drapes... it's so dramatic in the best of ways, like something you'd see in an epic art piece, you know?

@WintyGummyBear Congrats!!! Both of the outfits look great (especially love how floaty and drape... y... they look!), and definitely give off the angel and devil energy you were going for. Admittedly I see the romantic feel of the pictures, but I'm highly biased, as a lover of romance (especially the type with a dichotomy between the pair, such as good and evil). Not sewing related, but I love the flame in the last picture! Super cool.

@Sanar Your outfit is already looking great! I absolutely adore the pants, the fabric choice is stunning. Can't wait to see what comes next!

@Teddy Oh no! Rest up and I hope you feel better soon!

On my end, making steady progress. I have a witch hat made and I'm almost done with the robe (just one seam and some cleaning up left)! Here's a quick photo of the witch hat.. I'm trying to decide if I want to add a little star or something to it as decoration.

    58. @Sanar Great job on those hakama! I love your fabric choice, and they look absolutely great on him. This outfit is really coming along wonderfully.:D

@Harmony909 What a cute hat! And I think adding a star is a perfect idea for a witch’s hat. I’m really looking forward to seeing that robe when it’s completed too.:)
