Sewing Simple witch hat tutorial

Oct 29, 2019

    1. I have no photos of process, because I made it firstly and later decided to post a short tutorial. Hat is of felt and I made it for my MSD Resinsoul Ju.

      Step 1 - Pattern
      Measure needed head with the wig - in my case it is 22 sm (do not make hat to tight)
      Then we need to calculate internal (R1) and external (R2) radius.

      R1 = L / (2* 3.14), where L is head size.
      In my case R1=3.5 sm

      R2 = R1 + desired brim

      I decided to do brim 3 sm, so R2 = 6.5 sm

      Use geometric compass to make pattern for hat brims part.

      Now we need to make pattern for upper part - actually, a cone. Calculate angle by this formula:

      A = 360 * R1 / H

      where H - height of the hat (13 sm in my case) and R1 - radius from previous formula.
      A = 360 * 3.5 / 13 = 96
      To be honest, I used 90 angle - it is more convenient and not very significant for this size. You can increase hight to 14 sm for perfect calculation :)

      Step 2 - Cut and sew
      I used quite thin and soft felt - it is better to make interest from for upper part. If you do the same, you need to pieces of lower (brim) part. Cut it of felt and sew together by outer radius.
      Then cut upper part and sew a cone.
      A small hint - fold in in half and make border a little bit wavy with scissors.

      You can leave upper part as straight cone, but I like when it is has curves (make a couple of folds).
      Also my doll is an elf, so I made holes for ears:

      And photo with bad light of the hat owner in strange pose (I do promise to do better ones)))

    2. :ablink: That is a lot of math...

      I am going to show this to my husband who is good at math when I get home amd see if he ubderstands it. I really wanna make a hat and your finished product is so cute!

    3. Thank you :)
      If you need - just ask, I hope I could help you.
