@PoeticSoul Beautiful! Love the frog fabric. @Teddy I don't have a finished plan for the shoes, yet. I think either low boots os some sort of heeled shoe, preferably quite narrow. I will go on a research binge and see what I can come up with from historical sources and then happily bastardize that into something I think will work for this.
@Vindalootoo Thank you! I used this tutorial here on DoA, /tutorials/easy-cheaty-yukata-kimono-–-needs-no-pattern.49/#article-49 and adapted it a bit to make the body a smidge wider and the sleeves longer to give it more of an ancient vibe. I liked the juxtaposition of the formal look with the ridiculousness of using fun flannel and downright silly decoden on the obi. It suits the fairytale nature of these girls. @mydaffer Thank you so much! Gotta love the old Volks vibe, and this is such a fun style to dress them in because as part of my fairytale world, I can make them as silly and fun as I like. I think it goes perfectly with their sweet, rather anime-looking faces and simple single jointed bodies. @Teddy Yes, happy frogs! This flannel fabric just made me smile and I had to have it. Whenever I do outfits for this grouping of girls, part of the fun is choosing the 4 fun flannels. I know you understand this with all the multiples you do for your amazing crew. @Lillith Thank you! I ‘m afraid I have way too much fun shopping for flannel on Etsy. I only need half a yard for each kimono, and I get a vast selection there.
Thank you so much! I have so much fun making these. This weekend I’m starting on #3 and I’m really looking forward to it because it’s been such a hectic week. I need a bit of creative distraction!
Howdy Creators All, Of course I'm following along with this month's lovely projects! I found an affordable big girl here on DoA. From Fantasy Doll, I introduce Nina. I've been much in the mood to crochet some hats. Here's three, and I'm finishing up another 5. I'm looking for a fabric choice for the Kimono pattern. Maybe I can get one done for this month? Anyway, looking forward to seeing all your updates! Good Stuff! IMG_20210917_174609_hdr by Coulombe, on Flickr Oh, and to show the difference in size from my last project doll, the necklace on Nina is the belt I made for Sosle Rabbit Rider last month!
@Valdemagra Ooooooh, hats!!! How wonderful that your new girl is getting a hat collection…it’s so much fun, and you’ve certainly done a stellar job on those…they’re gorgeous! I have an off-topic confession to make…as if collecting BJDs isn’t enough…my grouping of big girls also collects hats! I became addicted to these by a wonderful designer on Etsy named FancifulDelightsCo, and I’ve slowly built up a sizable collection over the past several years. As an on-topic comment, it was the amazing adornments she is able to get her hands on that really struck me (in addition to the quality and gorgeous design work of course!) Man, I’d love to get a peek at her workroom and oogle the supplies! Here is a peek at my girls’ hat collection…perhaps they’ll inspire your Nina to collect more and more!
{groan!} Don't give my gang any ideas! I think the house would explode if the dolls began collections too! Although making an outfit to go with one of the hats might be a good backup plan if you ever get to the point where outfit inspitration fails to strike. Teddy
Actually I’ve made them so many clothes over the years by taking part in these rounds, whenever I want to get a new hat, I deliberately choose one that will match a pre-existing outfit I’ve already made! I love how it really takes my outfit to the next level.
@PoeticSoul . Jinkies!! Thanks for that wonderful share about hats! Inspiration on overdrive now! But, today is finding the Kimono fabric from my stashes. I've got to start using stuff up! I've had a huge bag of embroidery floss to use up, and each hat uses 4 skeins. I've been trying to work in a smaller scale, but it's quite difficult. I've saved examples over the years for reference, but some tiny crochet is yet magic to me. I can't knit at all.
@Valdemagra Oh, pretty! Nina is a lucky girl. @PoeticSoul What a wonderful collection. Thank you for sharing, it fits the fairytale theme perfectly. Can confirm. Several of my dolls haver thier own collections. It gives a nice touch to their characters, but it can start to take up space and eat up funds if one is not careful.
I finally made a trip to the craft store, so now I should hopefully get something to share up in the next few days. As of today, I’ve got the skirt cut and my fabrics planned. Now I have some trim to put on the skirt and a contrast fabric for the back bow tail thingies (idk what they’re called). I got lucky and found some beautiful crepe-back satin on the remnant pile, as well as a half off sale on ribbons/trim.
@Valdemagra Congrats for the new girl!!! Those crochet hats are super cute!!! @PoeticSoul Wow that hat colletion is incredible!!! Your girl wearing the floral witch hat looks adorable Today I finished the dress, also made a pair of matching ballerinas to complete the look. I can't decide about the wings... She looks pretty sugary but I don't decide if the wings could look great or a bit too much
@5akuraD1va She looks so sweet! You could make a pair of removable wings and if you end up prefering her without them you could just leave them off.
@5akuraD1va . Oh So Perfect!! Yes, she's sweet, but also refined and dressed to the nines! I vote to make the wings, just because I selfishly want to see what confection you'll make! I'd buy that dress, it looks so professionally tailor made!
I had a new arrival today, meet Gem of Doll Ymir! I have posted her box opening if you are interested. (Full set). But now I think she should have the yukata. What do you make of the fabric choice? Nina will get a simple skirt to tie together the pieces she owns. IMG_20210918_211651_hdr_kindlephoto-150565901 by Coulombe, on Flickr IMG_20210918_211146_hdr_kindlephoto-150734751 by Coulombe, on Flickr
Remnants and sale items are often great finds for doll sewing - well done for spotting them. Adorable! She does look very sugary. Yes! Or you can have her with or without them according to your whim at the time...? It looks suitably light and summer and the soft shade doesn't clash with her colouring. Sometimes simple is all that's needed, then the pattern in the fabric can be the statement of the pice - with that range of colours, such a skirt will be very versatile as to what it can be paired with Teddy
@5akuraD1va What a sweet, sweet outfit…and so beautifully made! Your girl is an absolute confection in it, and I’m in total agreement with everyone else about the removable wings idea. It could really take your outfit to the next level. @Valdemagra That fabric is so beautifully serene and would be perfect for a yukata. And a simple skirt made out of that fabric for Nina would be amazing! With all those colors, mixing and matching with different colored blouses and hats would be so much fun. I was able to finish kimono #3 this afternoon. This was frankly the silliest flannel fabric I’ve ever come across which is why I simply had to use it for these fairytale sweets-based girls. I mean, ice cream cats…really? But my old Volks MSD F-01 girl, Lady Marmalade, insists it’s just her style.
Nina is a lovely doll and looks fun to dress up. Great job on the hats and can’t wait to see the Kimono you make! I love it, I love your dolls and the Kimonos you make for them. Brovo again! Really cute accessory additions too. How adorable, front and back! Ohhh, I seen this box opening and she is just darling. Congratulations, she’s a lovely little doll! I’m a HUGE fan of elf ears and hers are no exception. I love your dolls outfit, and her hat! All the hats are wonderful, great collection.
Kitties and cream do go together so ice-cream isn't so much of a stretch - cats are forever licking themselves so they'd love it if they were made of ice-cream (although they probably wouldn't last long)... and the fabric designer's silliness is Lady Marmalade's gain. Teddy
PoeticSoul, what I find amazing is how many cute prints you find which are also in the perfect scale! Ice cream kitties are pretty silly & yet ideal for the kimonos.
@mydaffer Thanks! Yes, it’s such a fun project because I love hunting for cute flannels and fun little decoden online. It’s affordable since I only need 1/2 yard for each, so every now and then I can choose 4 and have a go for these cute girls all at once. And because it’s all straight sewing and nothing intricate, it doesn’t hurt my arthritis to do them, which is a huge plus. Basically all the fun of designing for my dolls with none of the pain. @Teddy Gotta love the silliness when it comes to my old Volks girls! It’s perfect for their funny, fairytale-like back story. @cthulhu I’m always surprised as well by the plethora of cute flannels that are out there. Whenever I’m in the mood to make a new set, I’ll hunt for hours online in my jammies, giggling the entire time. It makes me feel just like a little girl again…a little girl with her own Paypal account! And happily, after working hard on it all day, the final kimono in the set is complete! 4 in one month is a bit daunting, but then none of the girls can get jealous because they’ll all have a new one for their next slumber party. This one is sweet little lady bugs for my Volks MSD F-04, Ambrosia.
Skirt is done. It's funny, I made a dress for myself out of this fabric almost 30 years ago. The waist band is some left over from from Letterman jackets I made for my niece and nephew one year. Had to burn the edges to prevent fray. IMG_20210920_155517_hdr_kindlephoto-262468334 by Coulombe, on Flickr Thinking I'll save the kimono for monochromatic next month. Lots of research involved. I must say, I dropped my jaw repeatedly watching women on YouTube wrapping their waists with obi. I have even more questions now! The yellow will make a better summer yukata, but ultimately for Ymir I want something exotic and regal. I found many inexpensive vintage kimono available from Japan. I am considering upcycling the silks. I want to have a long uchikake (over-robe) also. But not during the mono theme, it will be a slow process, but her beauty inspires me!
This is really adorable material, You did such a wonderful job and it’s so nice you were able to make these and you hands cooperated. Very nice outfits for your adorable dolls! What a great job, love the material and her style. Love your unique doll just like this!
@mydaffer . Thank you! Yes, Nina is a skater chick with too much time on her hands. Who knows what trouble she'll get into! I would like to make her a skateboard with street graffiti to help her on her travels. Um, after I managed to get a new clothes dryer delivered today, I couldn't resist buying my first male, non-human doll today. I found him on DoA and he may arrive Friday. He's naked but for eyes. Going to be a fun challenge!
Can’t wait to see him. It’s so fun to customize a doll. I have two boys now after all the years of collecting. A cute boy and my Momo and one I’m waiting for the head that is sd. Exciting, we’ll both be customizing boys about the same time!
Yay! Well done for getting all four done adn WAY before the end of the month too. Excellent - and all from stuff already in your stash. Is she SD sized? I found a skateboard for mine at Build-a-Bear a few years back. Teddy
@Valdemagra A skateboarder…what fun! I adored watching the skateboarding competition in the recent olympics. All the participants were absolutely fascinating, in addition to being amazingly talented, and would make for a fabulous BJD character! I really love the idea of a skateboard decorated with street graffiti too…it would be an awesome prop. Nina’s skirt turned out great! Yes, I pushed it so I could have the remainder of the month to rest up after so much sewing…lol!
I think lots of peeps on DoA might enjoy this 3 min video from Dior, but I wasn't sure where to put it. This if full of 1/3 scale. So inspiring! Please enjoy!
I made two dresses for the apron Alice in Wonderland outfit but the dress that is long I thought it look better just like it was. I think the one with the doll laying down, the dress was a flop. I tried again today by making the long dress .
@mydaffer . I like the first one VERY much! Not a flop! Great fabric choices and very playful. The second dress is more sweet and demure. Both are fabulous!
@mydaffer Both dresses are very pretty in their own way. And this way your doll will have quite a warderobe when the round is over. My own project kind of stalled. I have made some cuffs and an inner collar out of crochet, but I'm still stuck on footwear.
Thank you, I started collecting dolls because I’ve always loved dolls and sewing. These rounds keep me motivated and are really fun. My main part of this hobby is sewing. Good luck with the shoes, I get stumped sometimes on what to do and just think about it for a few days and then an idea will pops in my head.
This is pretty much what I was going to say - the first one looks like a playsuit, the second one a more demurte dress. I think both work very well - just in different ways. But the cuffs and collar are still progress. Footwear is more complicated and time consuming (or so I've always found) I've redone the neckline on the renaissance gown for one of my twelve dancing princesses, and am part way through sewing the re-pleated skirt back onto the bodice. Bodice lining and fastenings (both fake and real) next. Teddy
Thank you, I can always mix and match, dye or add things, that’s the beauty of sewing for fun I appreciate the comment. Teddy, btw I love you sewing room, personally I have a new remnant of carpet on the floor I have to sit and cut, iron, and arrange my sewing materials. I’m looking to get a table but I‘ve collected so many dolls and sewing things I’ve collected myself right out of space. lol Love the shelves you have too.
Thank you. My sewing room had got to that right-out-of-space stage too. I could no longer face the repeated job of clearing enough floorspace to lay out fabric for cutting every time I needed to. So, I bought the sewing table with storage space underneath it so that all the stuff cluttering the floor could go on the shelves under the table and I coud use the table as my cutting surface (without needing to get myself down onto the floor and back up again every time). Having it in two parts and on lockable casters means it can be seperated into two long thin tables and wheeled to the sides of the room if I need the space in the middle for some other purpose (like circulation space for parties or unfolding a z-bed for visitors) Teddy
@mydaffer I agree with everyone else here…that first one is so cute and lighthearted! I love it! And the second one is very pretty and lady-like. That’s a win-win in my book! I’m exactly the same way. When I first discovered these rounds (being hosted by someone else at the time, who later moved on from the hobby) I used them to keep me motivated in my sewing and it worked brilliantly. Years later, my entire collection has diverse and complete wardrobes suited to each individual character and I can really be proud of my accomplishments. No one lacks for clothes here!
Thank you for the kind comment. It’s funny because when I got into the hobby I wanted to sew a dress for all my dolls and sometimes they’d have to share, wear hand me downs, or even steal another dolls clothes. I have bought a few outfits here and there but I have a hard time buying when I can sew. Problem is I keep getting more and more dolls, lol. Thankfully Volks changed and I’m happy with the older dolls and Dimdoll closed so my weaknesses are now limited. Yaay.... lol I think I can finally finish clothes for my dolls! These threads really do help a lot. So happy you host them, thank you very much.
Everyone’s are looking great! I finally got part of mine to a shareable state. Still needs a hook and eye on the back of the skirt, but I’ll get that another day. The fabric is actually a teal color, not that strange gray/blue it photographs. Around the bottom is pleated ribbon and a bit of trim that I beaded. I stole a petticoat off another dress I made previously to give it some poof. Between shoes and maybe a second petticoat, it should be a slightly more flattering length when it’s done. Next up are some panels for a sort of over skirt and a bodice. The navy shirt is to avoid scandalizing the family, not a permanent piece of the outfit (Mom was in the room for a bit while working on it).
Nice work, can’t wait to see it complete. Haha please don’t scandalize the family! Too funny. Keep up the good work, love the color even though it’s off color in the photo. The trim is lovely too.
It's showing on my screen as a rich teal colour, no grey in sight. Good luck witht eh overskirt and bodice. I'v had abit of progress on mine - the lining is now in the bodice, the fastenings are all on, and the lower sleeves have been altered to a closer fit. It just needs the "drawing out" (white piece to form a puff of white in an opening - to fake the fabric of the cemise underneath puffing neatly through) on the lower sleeves, and the lace around the inside of the wrists and neckline to make it look like she has an actual chemise underneath. Hopefully I can get those doen beofre the end of the month and take some pictures. And then that's another fo the dancing princesses done. Teddy
@Azure Agape It shows up as a beautiful deep teal on my Ipad as well. It’s truly lovely…that pleated ribbon on the bottom is such a wonderful touch. @Teddy I’m really hoping you can finish it because I’m dying to see! I dearly love the fascinating things you make for your dolls.
Made a crochet crossbody to complete her outfit, but I wish I'd made the strap a few inches longer. I may need to make some little pins for her bag, ie: The Misfits, and such... IMG_20210928_132357_hdr by Coulombe, on Flickr The Man and I are brainstorming how to make a skateboard, but I found the build-a-bear option, too. Thanks! @Teddy
@Valdemagra I love the addition of a cross-body bag for your skateboarding character! It’s a perfect touch to complete her outfit…and yes, she definitely needs some cool pins to take it over the top. She’s such a fascinating character.
Sounds right to me too (not that I'd really know - being an old far with litle knowledge of "kids today") Teddy
@Teddy I'm really looking forward to see your work @PoeticSoul All the kimonos are fantastic!!! Please share a pic with the fours girls reunited @Valdemagra the crochet crossbody adds a nice touch to the coord @Azure Agape Wow that skirt is looking great Finally my two neurons connected and I came up with an idea to put together the fairy wings I got a gold wire and use some scraps of star gauze that I had storaged. The result is not as lovely as I would like but I was short of time and other ideas would take longer and would be expensive for my poor budget Anyway, I think she looks super cute with the complete look Sugar plum fairy by ccsakura85, en Flickr Sugar plum fairy by ccsakura85, en Flickr
@5akuraD1va , Yaaas! I must try that idea in the future! I have colored wire for jewelry making, hum... So how did you attach the gauze? Tiny drops of glue, or tiny stitches? I can't see anything but super cute! I had thought about adding some tiny bee wings to my little bag after I saw how it looked with the stripe of black, but decided to remake it sometime to have more black stripes and longer strap. I got the idea from a little hairclip I'd saved from my daughter's childhood. The tiny wings used some yellow wire and stretched gauze around both sides of the wings. So, anyway, I love the way you shaped your wings, and the single layer looks elegant and airy. Far better than the bee wings. Glad you pondered the perfect answer!
Super tiny drops of glue on the wire and patience to place the gauze correctly. Tiny bee wing would look adorable!!!
What a beautiful outfit, well done. The wings may not have been the outcome you were aiming for but they are the icing on the cake in my opinion, fantastic! The photos are beautiful too.
I'm probably not going to finish the 12th dancing princess dress by the actual end of the month (tonight) - I'm close but I've been to tired to sew for the past few evenings (I've lost all of my commute stamina over the last 18 months and one day in the office is enough to wipe-me out! I even nodded of at my desk yesterday - but my head hitting the laptop stand woke me up), but I'll post pictures as soon as it's finished and photographed. Teddy
just paged through the end of this thread looking at everyone's progress/finished stuff...life has been spectacularly unkind to any kind of hobby pursuits whatsoever throughout the month of September, and my dolls and sewing have gone completely untouched. going to try again in the next round; hopefully I can actually find a confluence of time and energy this month.
