This is the newest round of the sewing project. How does this work? Every round, you try to make one complete outfit (or more) that fits the theme as you interpret it. It doesn't have to conform 100% to it (feel free to be creative in your interpretation!) These projects are here to inspire your sewing and creativity. During the four weeks, you post your plans, inspiration images, progress pictures etc. It's no contest, there is no winner, we all just try to motivate each other. NOTE: Sewing Project is free for anyone to join whenever they want. New faces are always welcome at anytime during the round. It’s finally time for our Fairytale round! It’s always nice to take a little break from the realities of our hectic lives and wander through the fantastical world of our imaginings. This round is for creating outfits for those characters you might meet along the way, and you should feel free to let your imagination soar to wherever it might take you. It doesn’t have to conform to any pre-described fairytale story from childhood…you can always make up your own! Or perhaps you just have a whimsical character in your collection based on role-play, or a fantastical book, movie, or purely your own imagination. If your darling longs for a new whimsical outfit, then join us and make it happen. And remember to stretch your wings and have fun! Week1: 9/1-9/7 * Pick a doll and post their name, sculpt and picture * Decide what you want to make and post a description or inspiration images * If you use pre-made patterns, decide on which ones to use * If you make your own patterns, get started on that. If you have trouble finding or making your patterns, ask for help in the thread! Week 2: 9/8 to 9/15 * Buy or get done with your patterns * Gather your materials (fabrics, notions etc.) and post a picture/pictures of them! * Get started with the sewing and post progress pictures! Week 3 and 4: 9/16 to the end of September * Try to get the whole outfit done! * If you have time left over, make some accessories! When you are done, make sure to post a picture of the completed outfit, if possible on the doll! Coming rounds: [ Round 103 ] Monochrome [ Round 104 ] Theater/Masquerade [ Round 105 ] Pick a Decade [ Round 106 ] Unfinished business [ Round 107 ] Working with scraps [ Round 108 ] Bohemian [ Round 109 ] Science Fiction/Fantasy/ Cosplay [ Round 110 ] Basics [ Round 111 ] Comfy-wear/Sleepwear/Delicate Underpinnings [ Round 112 ] Eveningwear/Haute Couture [ Round 113 ] Unfinished Business [ Round 114 ] Punk/Steampunk/Cyberpunk (Glamrock/Jrock/Visual Kei) [ Round 115 ] Mori Style/ Dark Mori [ Round 116 ] Designers Choice! Having made a list of the upcoming themes and assigning projects to this, I'm going to attempt to finish my Twelve Dancing Princesses set that I started for a Fairytale themed doll meet about 10 years ago. Many of them were mostly done except for fastenings (they wore them temporarily tacked closed), a couple were missing pieces (like over-sleeves) and one girl (on the left in red and blue) wore in a robe borrowed from her brother: Teddy
Popping myself over into this one. Gonna make myself the obvious example again of "not even close to finished" on the last one, but I'm following along with everyone still!! Haven't disappeared
Now that my arthritic hands have taken a two month break from sewing for these slavedriving dolls of mine, I find myself really missing it. As I learned from a couple of rounds ago, my old hands can no longer handle the tightly fitted bodices, intricate collars, finnesed linings, tiny button holes and snaps, and fine gathers of sewing for dolls. But I’m thinking I can still find a way to enjoy the creative designer process through more simplistic styles like straight-seamed kimonos or my old love, sock couture. So I’ve decided to join in this round with you fine folks, and we’ll see how it goes. This is the perfect round for me because my entire collection is based on a fairytale world of my own imaginings, so they all fit the theme. And while all my dolls have complete wardrobes and don’t actually “need” anything, mama needs to be creative so they’re happy to be the recipients of even more clothes. My fashion victims for this round is my grouping of early Volks MSD girls. These “oldies but goodies” are always up for more fun flannel yukatas. My elven shape-shifters and their day-of-the-dead pal all work in a fairytale bakery and constantly enjoy slumber parties in their off time. I love hunting down cute, fun, cotton flannels to make their outfits and decorating their obis with tons of sweets-based decoden. And here are the flannel fabrics I purchased on Etsy for this project, which should all arrive this week.
Yay! Go YOU! In a previous round Iwas workign on the gown for the princess who had to dance in a robe borrowed form her brother. Green silk damask, in an Italian Renaissance style, I got the bocide and sleeeves made: And I had also hand-sewn the skirt ot the waist of the bodice, before deciding that the neckline was wrong. It needed the shoulder-straps narrowed at the bottom to make the neckline wider and squarer. The pleats on the skirt front were just uneven enough to look a little skewed, so I unpicked the pinping from the neckline and started to unpick the skirt from the bodice atthe front waist, then got no further. My first job shoud be to fix those problems and get it back to the stage where it only needs fastenings (adn accessories....?) Teddy
I definitely want to do the round as I wasn’t sure I’d have time this month but seems I do. Since I am a free style sewer, and read that we can use our one imagination, I am going with Alice in Wonderland of course I definitely want to do my own interpretation, but with my sewing, like with Alice, nothing seems to be what it is. lol
Make that three. I got nothing done last month. I think I’m just going to put it in the unfinished business round or whenever I get around to it. For this month, I’m using Bella (Resinsoul Xun) again as a princess. No one in particular, just stereotypical gown with a big skirt. For the outfit, I’m using the Christine Phantom of the Opera gown by Antique Lilac. The colors bear minimal resemblance to the real thing but I’m in it for the skirt, not theatrical accuracy. I’ve tried MB Lilac’s bodice patterns before (Mirror Queen, sized for FID and a strapless gown) and they’re not terribly off for the Xun body. Alterations shouldn’t be too bad. I’ve already started on the skirt mock-up a few days ago and need to get going on the bodice.
I got the fabric and buttons I needed today! Thank goodness for moving, because the Joann Fabrics I'm next to now is really top notch. As a recap from my intro last round, I'm recreating a set of Balmain items for a whole outfit. It fits in with Fairytale because owning a whole set of matching designer clothes is definitely a thing of Fairytales Here's the pics, smaller, just for reference: Here's my sweet haul from Joann... The ones on the floor are for this challenge (plus there are some white tiny buttons in the bag that I'm going to paint gold). The rest are just a ton of fun pieces I found in the remnants pile I'm gonna use my 1/3 girl, Alchemic Labo Latea, as my fashion model. I've got resources queued up to create a dress form that matches her. Okay. My first step will be to create the dress form I mentioned, and a set of paper patterns. I'm going to do something crazy and tell y'all that I'm going to return with at least those two things by Monday. Let's see what a deadline does for me on these projects. Tally ho!
I'm going to be sewing and crafting this month for my Snow (April Story Adrienne). I'm not completely sure yet what I'll be making for her, but since she is supposed to be a doll version of Snow White the fairytale princess, all of the outfits I make for her are always themed around that aesthetic-- kind of like those "Disney Princesses as modern girls" fan arts. I'd love to make her a rendition of the classic Snow White princess gown from the original animated movie, and recreating the Snow White costumes from the Lily Collins movie "Mirror Mirror" for her is a dream project of mine. I don't know if I'll be up to tackling those this month though. I do also have loads of ideas for more "modern Snow White" outfits-- they're really fun to design. I'll just have to see how it goes. In the meantime, here's Snow:
I want to join this one! All my MSD-sized girls have ball gowns, but my boys have nothing to match. I have a lot going on IRL right now and I'm honestly not sure how ambitious I can be if I want a realistic chance to get something done within a month. But that won't stop me from trying to get at least something done. I want to catch that sort of timeless whimsy of fairytales, not locked down to a specific historical period or real world fashion. I will take inspiration from historical stuff for sure, but there will be no attempt at accuracy. Aaaaand, that leads to my first problem: Design. Historical stuff is easy, just do your research and then do your best to represent what you've learned. But for this I want something a bit more extravagant and flamboyant than real world stuff. I want something that look like it belongs and fit in with the girls dresses. Another criteria is that I wnat to avoid the plain pants that have plagued mens fashion throughout history (with a lovely exception around the renecance). Even the 17 hundreds with their embroidered waistcoats and delicate details ofthen have next to nothing going on on the lower half of the body, perhaps a knee bow and a fancy buckle on the shoes -if you are lucky. But I must admit I have no real plan yet. I just know I want to catch the same feeling of freedom of design as I feel for the girls ball gowns. It's not fair that the ladies should get all the frills and flowers. But on the other hand I still want something that reads as masculine. I haven't decided what doll to go with either.
Nice! Fatal! This is how stashes grow beyond all reason.. Lovely - looking forward to seeing what you come up with for this. Teddy
@thedarkeststar13 Your dolly is gorgeous! I can't wait to see what version of the outfit you decide to go with.... @Lillith Designing interesting outfits for male characters is tough! Flowers can definitely still read masculine though.. this sounds like a really cool goal. @Teddy... ...Yep...
I'm going to keep cheering you all on as home repairs keep me distracted & not creating. The creative doll time here is keeping me entertained.
UPDATE: I went through my stash tonight, you might know this kind, the one where you're hoarding doll stuff while you're working your life away? Luckily I'm able to still somewhat use my hands to actually put my stash to use. (seriously)... Anyway, this is the intended doll, Volks Sd Nono older version, one piece body, and the material I plan to use but can change if I screw up too much..., No pun intended. I added a photo for the theme of my interpretation of Alice in Wonderland. lol
This is my first time entering a sewing project round! I am so happy to participate My inspo is Sugar Plum Fairy( but I¨ll make it Lolita Style) and the lucky one who will wear it is Haruko, my dearSD. Princess Haruko by ccsakura85, en Flickr Now I will start looking for the perfect fabrics and embellishments, and maybe a pinkish wig to complete the look
I should of mention that I plan on using one of the cat materials possibly, oh, you know, everything is only a vision, lol. I do have blue and white material in that pile so those are the two main colors.
I've spent much of my summer not doing squat. And since I need to have a come to jesus talk with my own wardrobe and that will include making a few items, my attention is turning to three msd boys who have .... two pairs of shoes between them and that is absolutely IT! So since they inhabit a MMORPG Alice in Wonderland type game, this theme fits perfectly. First victim? DZ MSD Boy Mo, who has the "my milkshake brings all the boys to the yard" hips, dashing charm, and lies like he breathes. XD. I'll update with some vauge plans after work.
So many lovely ideas already! This is going to be a beautiful round for sure. I've made my decision on who I will be sewing for. This is Samuel, also known as Vain, an Iplehouse Boris. He is on the muscle body and he is very top heavy, proportionally. That makes it tricky to sew for him sometimes.
That it will be. Posing him is a wrestling mach and if there ever was a doll with it's own ideas and personality, this one is it. But that also means he is often the last to get new stuff, so it's only fair that he gets a bit of attention too. Just to make the point, you all know how much I sew for my dolls by now. And still, the pants he is wearing in this picture is bought! I almost never buy ready made clothes, but in this case it was totally worth it. With that said, I do have basic patterns for him, so at least once the design is done I can probably get going pretty quickly.
UPDATE: I made a pattern for the loons and I'm so happy, these are the mock ones but I can't believe they turned out. I think I'll stick with these although this material was just for practice.
@mydaffer Those looks great! (And you don't need to quote yourself unless you have something specific you want to refer to. We can see all your previous posts just fine by reading the rest on the thread. )
Ok thank you, I was trying to keep everything together, i'm weird. Thank you for the kind comment too!
Thank you, I hate when I make a mock and it turns out. So much time involved. If I would of used the intended material, probably would have been a flop. It's what you're not trying to accomplish that seems to be the masterpieces. lol
I am not getting very far with my exploration of wings... but will try again...with Miracle Doll Mumu again and some colorful wire for holding up wings... DOA sewing by mare joy smith, on Flickr
@mydaffer Practice ones or not, those pantaloons look truly lovely. I love the ruffle and ribbon detail on the legs…such a nice finishing touch. And how nice that you made them out of appropriately white fabric. I swear whenever I’m working out a new pattern design I always use weirdly colored or inappropriately patterned scrap fabric I have laying around, and that would just never do no matter how well the prototype turned out. So go you for a job well done on these! @dailymare Colored wire…now that’s brilliant! What a wonderful idea!
Alice in wonderland, lolita styled sugar plum fairy, modern takes on classic fairytales and now wings! I think this one has potential to be the best round ever! I am making... pants. It does seem a bit boring in comparison, but I swear they are not ar boring as they sound. It's a hybid between late 16'th century pluderhose and 18'th century knee pants.
Thank you so much for the sweet inspirational comment. It really means a lot. I used that material because it’s scraps of material I absolutely love the feel of, and just in case it worked out I was thinking I could use them for a different doll. I was amazed they even fit because I made a mistake and had to take like an inch off both sides in the front. I am remaking the pattern with that mistake because I like the way it made them poof on the side. lol
Oh my goodness those are absolutely adorable, they look so professional too. Very nice looking and looks like they fit perfectly.
Thanks! Fit was the easy part, I have taken the time to make e few basic patterns for most of my dolls, so all I have to do when I come up with a new design is to adjust the pattern accordingly. That way, since the original pattern fit perfectly, the new piece is likely to fit as well, unless I do something terribly involved. In this case I only had to adjust the length and add width to the lower edge to get a pattern that should work. Of course, it doesn't always work out in reality, but his time it worked like a charm.
@Teddy 12 beautiful dancing ladies! You have so many wonderful dolls! @PoeticSoul Those fabrics are so fun and colorful, slumber party heaven! @maxxxamillion Tally-ho, indeed! Still panting to see those shoes. You've got a lot of projects! @thedarkeststar13 Modernist Snow White, I am digging that idea. Your Snow is enchanting, too. @Lillith That sounds like some advanced designing to me! Extravagant fabrics, luxury, and oooh-la-la! Those pants are a great pattern! I'd want many! @mydaffer Those kitties on the pink stripe are adorable! I'd like to make a transfer of that image for a t-shirt or tote bag! @5akuraD1va Welcome! Your doll is lovely! She's already very well dressed, but handmade is love!
That was fast! They look great - the flowers at the cuffs look adorable. Thanks. I haven't made a start yet - yesterdays sewing accidentally slid backward into working on one of the Victorian bathing costumes for the previous round. Teddy
@Lillith I’m totally loving the design of those pants…talk about cute! And the little roses at the cuff are a darling and imaginative touch!
I think I'm done other then the snaps on the back. I really wanted to use the cat prints but only have one fat square each and didn't want to ruin them. I did make an apron and I really like the dress without it. I did dye the dress because none of the blues I used matched. I'm going to make another dress similar to this and I will be here watching all the lovey Fairytale projects being posted. I just love participating in these themes, they're so motivating and a nice way to get to know doll sewing lovers too.
Oh my gosh, I just figured out how to quote someone, lol.... Ok great idea, how do I get the print on a pdf so you can?
Thank you so much, I think I’m going to make another one without the ruffles for fun. Different colors of course. I’ll probably alter the pattern and use materials I put in the off limits pile as not to to use and ruin. But with my memory fresh from sewing this dress I think I’m safe. lol
Sounds reasonable. I am sitting right now, working on a doublet made from scarp fabric to see if I got the pattern right.
That froth of ruffles t the hem is just darling! It certainly looks like you will be. That just makes my heart leap. "Doublet" conjures such happy memories for me. Hopefully your scrap fabric doublet will be as useable as the drawers @mydaffer made. Teddy
And this is where I very nearly say: Oh come on, you're not that old. Time will tell, right now it looks promising, but we'll see.
{Laugh!} I can remember life in the 16th Century (wel... re-enacting it at Kentwell Hall in Suffolk), not to mention late fourteenth through most of the fifteenth century, and some of the Seventeenth Century (the Civil War parts at least). Doublets of many styles, I tell you - many, many styles. I' ve even worn them in more modern settings, like Costume Con in San Jose in 2008 (Rust and Green Elizabethan - made for Kentwell) Fingers crossed. Teddy
I’m glad you like it, you’re such a good seamstress, I’m just sewing for fun. I’m happy when something turns out and stays together.... lol If you’re mentioning the dress I just made thank you so much, hopefully I’ll get another done before the months end. If so, I’ll post it.
I've never dyed anything before. So the ruffles took the dye also? I'm really impressed how well it turned out. I'm gonna hafta try it one of these days!
Yes it took, I just let it soak over night then added vinegar for an hour, longer and it dissolves the dye in the water. Kinda cool. I put in pan and add water and dye and make sure it’s all submerged. I did soak a few days ago for a short time and it was even. Most times I get marbling, so take that into consideration. All the blues were different color blues before I dyed them.
Okay, having gotten a chance to think on my boy and what his style is supposed to be, I've got some idea where I'm going. First, my boy, wearing his only clothes: https://drive.google.com/file/d/16n4GDZwpcV2dvFyZN7Qm294pKG8zR4cn I just got him put together after over a year being taken apart and stored away. He needs a good cleaning and a much better faceup than he currently has, so part of week one is going to be getting him cleaned up. I have Monday off (US Labor Day), so I have some extra design time, and I want him to look more the part. Does he have a wig? Yes. It's not great and I'm going to get him a new one next month. (My pukipuki got a new wig and silicone headcap this month, plus I ordered some hair to reroot an off-topic doll). His look in general is supposed to lean towards Angelic/Cherubic. Oh, and his name is Lucifer (Lucian, in polite company). I'm wanting to make two sets of clothes: Something thats more rugged and adventure like as well as something for when he needs to look much more put together. I have two patterns that I downloaded from Craftyline several years back: The Unoa Mad Hatter Pattern, as well as a MSD pattern I think was inspired by Oliver Twist. I didn't know that the patterns were stolen from Dolly Bird at the time, but I have them and I'll use them. I'll have to do some fitting and adjustments because of his hips. I think I might try to do some shoes, but I haven't made shoes for a doll smaller than an 18in doll ever. His current shoes will work alright for another outfit I want to make for him and his brother that I need more skill for before attempting. I do have some fabrics and a few findings I want to use for him. Also, the Mad Hatter Pattern and some of the pieces, as well as some kind of boot pattern I tried to make: IMG_20210906_170316.jpg IMG_20210906_170912.jpg I picked up a few flannel fabrics for skirts for the fall and the Grey one I think will work well for the first look. Still digging around in skirts and old clothes. I'm going for neuturals with yellow pops. He's a Yellow Alice which means he's working with lights/shadows/illusions based on the game he's inhabiting, and the color is a marker of the type of Alice he is. The stereotype in the lore is that all Yellows are thieves, and boy oh boy does he embrace that, especially around bakeries. IMG_20210906_171724.jpg
Here's the apron I made but I didn't like it with the dress, maybe my second dress should go with this.....
Thank you so much! I seen your boy, how cute and the materials and pattern for his outfit, very nice, and I agree, yellow does pop. Thank you! I can plan all I want but in the end, nothing turns out like I plan 99.9% of the time, but that is the plan.... lol.... for now.
Good Hunting there. I tend to find I know exactly what I want, but haven't got any of it, or I have a lot of choice but no ability to make up my mind which to use. The apron is sweet @mydaffer - I hope you find/make a dress you like it with. It would be a shane to waste it. Teddy
