Wearables Sewing Project: Comfy-wear/Sleepwear/Delicate Underpinnings [ Round 111 ]

Jun 1, 2022

    1. A big thank you for the encouragement, I seen the outfits made and got overwhelmed myself. I agree with everything you said. Big Hugs.

    2. These are both looking SO GOOD! @Maud I love this turn-of-the-century period so much, so I'm really eager to see how this turns out... One day I'd like to attempt something along these lines in 1/6! (Because I'm a masochist, I suppose.) Although I will absolutely go simpler with lace insertions if I ever do this.

And @mydaffer echoing everyone else--no need to be embarrassed! Learning a new skill is full of lots of stops and starts, but you just gotta keep going forward... It took me years to even learn to give myself the grace to learn! But it's very rewarding in the end, and I think those are looking great.

I wish I had more pics to share, but I'm waiting until this weekend to get my fray check (and I have to test it on my silk, which I probably should have done before marking and cutting so many pieces... but oh well). At least I have this one! Aurelie and her silk. This color is so pretty, I really hope this works out. Otherwise, I think I'm going to use it to line a capelet maybe...

    4. Hi! my name is Adi (Adriana). I'm not new at DoA but I rarely write because English isn't my first language. I passed by a rough season and paused the hobby for a while but now I'm better and trying to re take it.

I was watching the sections on the forum and saw this one. I love miniatures crafts and I think this hobby gives a whole world of possibilities to crafters. Sewing clothes for dolls is super fun and I will try to join every week for now and on :XD:

I saw all your posts and I'm in love with your advances and your creations :love I'm trilling to see your final works :dance

My model will be a 1/6 Daomiao from DZ. Lately I'm into this size and he needs everything, clothes, shoes, wig, eyes, furniture... You name it :sweat So I'm planning to make something like pajamas for this little boy taking the teme of "confy-sleepwear".

      Daomiao.jpg

I already made patterns based on joggers and sweatshirt from some free patterns and making some adjustments for this pajama set.

      Sweatshirt_cut.jpg

      Jogger_cut.jpg

I will upload more advances latter. Greetings!

      --------------------
BTW when I used to use forums I uploaded pictures using TinyPic but apparently is closed now. If anyone can tell me how to upload pictures now I will be grateful.

    5. @Maud Oooh that petticoat looks like it's going to be gorgeous! I love the second image of the petticoat over the chemise as well, and it's kind of helped my own inspiration for this month too! I've had the hardest time settling on a design for Sativa's dress.

    6. Awww... They'll look so cute on him!

I use Flickr and copy/paste the BBCode form there into my posts. Good luck figuring ouut how to share your pictures.

      Teddy

    7. Literally any host that allows hotlinking will work. If it has no pregenerated BBcode you can use the Image tool and just paste the URL into it and it will genereate the code for you. :)

I have finished the "corded" petticoat. I'm happy I decided to cheat, it came together very quickly, it does the job and it looks the part.

    8. It really does look the part - I may have to steal the idea for my own dolls.

      Teddy

    9. Go right ahead.
Just be careful so that not all your girls decide that they need one of their own, all at once. ;)

    10. {laugh!} Luckily, corded petticoats aren't as in-demand as ruffled petticoats or tucked petticoats...

    11. Well, I made the whole outfit for Maya yesterday lol.
I found these lovely fabric and ribbons for a discount price. I thinked it will be perfect for this challenge.

Nonense! They came out very nicely.

I’m coming down firmly on the side of Teddy here! I found these outfits to be full of a quaint sort of charm I truly admire in costuming. It happens to be a style I love looking at but have seldom been able to properly achieve in my own sewing. It reminds me of a sweetly time-worn waif look, a wonderful look that is innocently compelling from the first half of the 1900s. I say well done! It has tremendous charm and truly suits your doll’s overall look.:thumbup

I had a new doll arrive yesterday and have nothing for her to wear. I hope it's ok that I change dolls and sew her some under clothes to wear. I can try to sew for both if time allows.

      • x 2
    17. No need to worry, do what you want to do. ^^ The important thing in these challenges is to have fun together. ;)

    18. Thank you so much, my mind holds so many patterns but I'm never able to make what I'm seeing. Sometimes I think of hiring someone to sew my though patterns. Most all my dolls wear clothes I made, some outfits I love so much. They are different because I don't use patterns and sew from scratch without plan. The entire reason I have dolls (although loved dolls my entire life) was to sew because I love sewing so much!

    19. Thank you,
You're right, I was overwhelmed with the degree of sewing difference's there are but I should not get so emotional. It is for fun, enjoyment, and motivation. I want so bad to be a good at sewing, I'm trying harder, now! ;)

    20. You're not alone in changing what you're doing. I have an FID Doria who will hopefully be arriving sometime very shortly and she'll need some underclothes too.

    21. Oh my gosh, small dolls are so hard to sew for and look what you did, that is so adorable and your doll is super cute! Love everything about this outfit! :love

    22. That is so professional looking, it's great. Love this outfit so much and it's perfect for your beautiful doll!
Petticoat and top look like a complete outfit! ;)

    23. Thanks. ^^ I always sew for my big girls, rarely for the little ones. But it's a simple outfit so it was fine. =) I sew more complex outfits for my big girls. XD
And keep the motivation ! I was a bad sewer at the begining. But you will be better by practicing. ^^ No need to worry, just try and try again.

    24. @Lillith thank you! The corded petticoat looks great! Tiny waistbands are killing me! (in a good way)

@Teddy reusing is always good! That would have been so pretty. I think its the way that the lace insertion section ruffles that's bothering me. I also over-estimated how tall the doll was going to be.

@Crissaegrim I cut it in half from the original lace! The other section is going to go on the bottom. You should definitely make your Doria something!

@Lilith they look great! Did you box pleat the skirts? Love the tiny waistbands.

@mydaffer thank you, I’m still rusty, it's been a long time since I’ve done something. And working ¼ has proven to be a bit more challenging than I expected! I’m awful at sleeves, so dont feel bad lol. Everyone has something that they’re not great at. The coveralls are adorable! I love the eyelet lace. Such a cute choice.

@Idoru thank you! I do too, I really like the 1930’s-1940’s as well. I might do some fun stuff from there for her later. Also, 1/6th would probably kill my hands! Lol the silk you chose looks lovely! If you have leftovers you should definitely line a capelet with it. Maybe a velvet caplet?

@kaschan502 thank you! I’m excited to see what you come up with!

      update
Ended up taking out 2 of the pin-tucks, and making the petticoat a ‘plan’ petticoat. I wasn't expecting that not having a doll or mannequin to fit it on would make hemming so much harder.... Maybe I'll have to make a 1/4 mannequin....

I’m going to make a second petticoat that will be more lace insertion, and still have the chevron pattern, without the embroidered trim. I think it was the embroidered trim that was throwing me off. It just didn't fit the character I had in my head.

    25. Fairy Nuff.

You can always use it for something else that doesn't need gathering into a ruffle.

      {nods} I was thinking that's what I'd have done.

@Lillith Those striped skirts are so lovely! All my girls are definitely jealous.;) And that corded petticoat looks great as well.

    27. @PoeticSoul Haha thanks. =)

I still have some fabric. I'm thinking of making one outfit for Momoko, my DD. If I have an idea for her, maybe I will post again. ^^

    28. Thank you! It's funny how different thing look to different people. All I see is a girl wearing the equivilent of panties and a t-shirt, but I am used to historical stuff, so I can't see past what the garments were at the time.

      Thanks!
One of the stiped skirts have cartrige pleats and the other one I don't know what to call in english, but it's a similar technique just with the raw edge encased in the wastband, instead of folded in before gathering and a slightly different way to do the seams.
For the corded petticoat the center front pleat is a box pleat the rest is just whatever was needed to get the width down to fit her. It's symetrical, but not entirely evenly spaced and several of the pleats are overlaping and some are double.

Thank you! I really like how simple garments like these still can look so shaped and structured. I mean, the only part of the entire outfit that isn't entirely made out of rectangles and triangles is the bodice, the rest it straight cuts only. It's a little bit like magic. :)

    29. Bound waist?
It's how 18th Century petticoats are done. I just made a full sized one for a friend. The waistband, or tape, is folded over the raw edge and stitched down on either side, like binding the edge of a quilt.

      Teddy

    30. Something like that. The gathers are done with several paralell rows of gathering thread, making the gathers neat and the waistband goes further down on the back than the front and the gathers are "locked" down by it, keeping them in place. Sometimes the gathers are locked to each other by an additional seam from the back as well, to control how much they can flare out. The gathering treads are typically not left in once the gathers are locked, keeping it neat but less rigid than cartridge pleats.

I found this blog post describing it very clearly, there is an english vesion of the text if you scroll down, but I don't know how good the translation is.

    31. Ah, so it's a variation on stroked gathers (the version I'm more familiar with, the back and front edges of the binding or waistband are even with each other)

      Teddy

    32. Well, I didn't make sleep wear exactly this go round but does this count as spring lounge wear https://www.flickr.com/gp/mydaffer/vv89E0. My new doll needed something to wear so I made her a summer dress from scratch. It's not perfect and the camera doesn't pick up the correct colors but in real life it's so adorable on her and perfect colors. I still have time for sleepwear, I'll try again. ;)

      Model is Peakswoods lavander Rosemii.

    34. @mydaffer it's really cute, good job. =)

I will try to sew the night outfit for Momoko today or tomorrow. Hope I will be able to make pattern for her huge boobs. XD

    35. Thank you, so much. Good luck with with the pattern for your doll, mine are all mostly small chested so pretty easy. LoL

    36. Thank you, you can't see it in the picture but I put a strip of material under the shoulder lace. ;)

    37. Certainly I’d consider this sweet little summer dress to be comfy wear. What could be more comfortable to throw on when friends say they’re dropping by, or for a quick jaunt to the grocery store when you realize you’re out of lemonade? And that fabric looks great on your Rosemii. It goes beautifully with her lavender skin tone.

    38. Thank you so much, I'm going to still try for some sleep wear, more likely Rosemii again. ;)

    39. I went crazy sewing today so I got a lot of pictures. I have plenty of dolls to try it on if it doesn't fit one it fit's the other... lol

I still want to try the blue jammies on Rosemii but later as I'm busy with life at the moment.

    46. It all came together so well, lovely outfit! It's so exciting to see everyones sewing project come together in these sewing groups, I really love that these are hosted. Well done, you're doll looks so lovely. ;)

    47. Thank you so much, I'm happy with it. The material was a piece of scrap I got from a scrap box, washed it and kept it aside for future projects. It's all used up as it was a small piece for practice.

    48. Thank you, Teddy!

      Thanks!

Now, if I am to follow my original plan for this month I still have the stubb and the pockets left to do, but now I am thinking more and more that maybe I should make Daisy her own shift (and bodice, but that is outside the scope of this months theme even with creative interpretation), so she can join Matilda in this...
Still not sure how these outfits would make sense to the dolls, they both have modern make up and I have no clue what kind of hair and headgear would be apropriate if I wanted a realistic whole, I am mostly just having some fun here and playing around.
At the same time I have long had an idea for making photostories around folk tales and these outfits would fit that pretty well, so I could use that long term project as an excuse...

Crafting projects do like to multiply uncontrollably, don't they?

      • x 2
    49. @mydaffer My, my, you’ve been so productive! I’m sure your lovely dolls appreciate it as much as we do. Well done!:thumbup

Amen to that! Happens to me all the time.:sweat I love the way these pieces you’ve made have gone together into such a cohesive look. It’s a little like stepping back in time, when things were so much more utilitarian and quaint…and I dearly love that look!:)

And as for me, it’s been a very hectic month and the heat here is abysmal! But I’ve at least managed to hand sew (with French seams) the pieces of my girl’s new robe together. Next, it’s time for the slow-stitching embellishments that tell the story!

      • x 2
    50. French seams are the best, I've practiced them before and figure if I ever make anything serious, I'd definitely incorporate those type seams. The robe is looking great and can't wait to see the story it tells. I love hand stitching, so much more personalized and it's relaxing. I enjoy seeing the creations on these thread and thank you for hosting them!

Yes productive, I was busy and had a lot of fun creating. Thank you ;)

    51. More incremental progress from me, it's been a pretty stressful (and extremely long-feeling) month so far and I haven't had as much creative energy. Things have hopefully been resolved, but I'm definitely still recovering. I'm getting more excited about my bralette top, I've got an incoming doll that's kind of an in-between size and I hope it'll fit her! Gotta wait until she arrives, though. This is kind of what I have in mind, with some gathering in the center of the chest to test out once I can try the fit.I think since the top is as finished as it can be without her, I'm ready to move on to the dress with the actual pattern pieces, lol! I'll probably sew the skirt hem first, then the darts and top edge next.

    55. Yay!

      Have fun with the slow-stitching

Fingers crossed for it working for her!

Excellent! Looks like you're quite far through the work too.

If all goes to pla (Ha Ha!) I will cut out some nightgowns for my girls during my lunchbreak at work today (my one-day-a-week not Working From Home)...

...Whether I will then get around to sewing them is another matter, we'll see. The plan to have started work on them over the weekend, obviously didn't survive contact with the enemy.

    57. @Mamo I love the pattern on your fabric…it’s so perfect for this application. And I certainly hope it winds up fitting your incoming girl like you hope because it’s shaping up to be a fabulous outfit!

@WintyGummyBear How soft and pretty that looks. You’ve already gotten a lot done, and I’m really looking forward to seeing it on your Xun.

@Teddy I love how you always seem to do multiples for your lovely family of proper young ladies. I can’t wait to see how these make up (whenever you find the time for it, of course!) Life often has a nasty habit of getting in our way, it seems. Still, a start is a start!:thumbup

      • x 2
    58. {LAUGH!} Necessity - but my own fault for having so may girls in the same family - making (or buying!!!) in multiples is sometimes the only option. I was slowly buying custom-colours of a particular S.O.D.A outfit for my girls, to get them each their own version of it, until they went out of business before I had one for each of my girls... So, I'd have to make the rest (and I was buying so I wouldn't have to make multiples of the same outfit) or give up on the idea before it was half achieved.
