Wearables Sewing Project: Comfy-wear/Sleepwear/Delicate Underpinnings [ Round 111 ]

Jun 1, 2022

    1. This is the newest round of the sewing project.
      How does this work?

Every round, you try to make one complete outfit (or more) that fits the theme as you interpret it. It doesn't have to conform 100% to it (feel free to be creative in your interpretation!) These projects are here to inspire your sewing and creativity. During the four weeks, you post your plans, inspiration images, progress pictures etc. It's no contest, there is no winner, we all just try to motivate each other.

NOTE: Sewing Project is free for anyone to join whenever they want. New faces are always welcome at anytime during the round.

We’re caught up in trying times, and sometimes we just need to slow down and get comfy and cozy with a cup of coffee, tea or cocoa, taking a bit of quiet time for ourselves…and hey, our dolls need it too! This month the focus is on our dolls’ more relaxed fashion needs…be it pajamas, nightgowns, robes or perhaps just those soft leggings, overwashed t’shirts or well-worn hoodies that we all love to hang out in. And don’t forget the ever-necessary underwear too, whether sexy or utilitarian. Let’s face it, we all need them and so do our dolls!;)

      Week1: 6/1-6/7
      * Pick a doll and post their name, sculpt and picture
      * Decide what you want to make and post a description or inspiration images
      * If you use pre-made patterns, decide on which ones to use
      * If you make your own patterns, get started on that.

If you have trouble finding or making your patterns, ask for help in the thread!

      Week 2: 6/8 to 6/15
      * Buy or get done with your patterns
      * Gather your materials (fabrics, notions etc.) and post a picture/pictures of them!
      * Get started with the sewing and post progress pictures!

Week 3 and 4: 6/16 to the end of June
      * Try to get the whole outfit done!
      * If you have time left over, make some accessories!

When you are done, make sure to post a picture of the completed outfit, if possible on the doll!

      Coming rounds:

      [ Round 112 ] Eveningwear/Haute Couture
      [ Round 113 ] Unfinished Business
      [ Round 114 ] Punk/Steampunk/Cyberpunk (Glamrock/Jrock/Visual Kei)
      [ Round 115 ] Mori Style/Dark Mori/Cottagecore
      [ Round 116 ] Designers Choice!

    2. I’ll be making another or my “storytelling” robes for my shronuri girl, Poetta (Volks 4-sisters Megu). I had so much fun doing my slow-stitching fabric creation last month (and found it so relaxing) that I just can’t resist! Besides, she needs an entire wardrobe of these things, and their creation seems like the ideal summer passtime for me (when it’s too hot where I live to do much else.):sweat My colors this month will be greens, and the theme will be her imagined story poem, “Adventures in Bunnyland”.

These are the supplies I’ve ordered…I just have to be patient until they arrive, so I can get started. Can’t wait!:)

    4. Oh, I need to join this one. I have thousand other things that needs doing to right now, but almost every doll I own lack sleepwear and also, as we all know, there is never enough petticoats. So I will join anyway.

    6. I should probably make more boxers for Jarrad and Jude, I want to get the fit better. I also want to have a go at socks, stockings and hose. Somebody tell me that I need to look through my current fabric stash for appropriate stretchy fabric before I think about going out and purchasing more.

Plus, if we're going for a historical understanding of undergarments then the shirts I didn't finish from last month totally count, right?

    7. I wasn't able to make time for last month's project.

But I'm hoping I might get some me-time this month. And as luck would have it, I have the perfect project that fell out of the laundry XD

This is an old shirt that's wearing out and was one of the last gifts I got from my grandmother on my mom's side before she passed away in 2014. The stitches are popping and the fabric is getting thin in places even though the picture is still relatively sharp. I plan to chop it up and turn the picture side into an oversized pajama shirt. And the back side into pajama shorts.

      SP - PJs - wolf shirt.jpg

And it's going to be for my Kevin doll (A DF-H 65cm Ghost General Beilan in natural yellow) The wolf face is just sized enough to fit around his torso like one of those full face t-shirts you see on Amazon sometimes. Plus, from Kevin's story, there's a lot of blue in his outfits and wolf themed motifs. So it's rather fortuitous that this shirt is gonna make him some nice modern PJs.

      Doll - Kevin.jpg

      Wish me luck!

And best of luck to all you lovelies in your projects, too :)

    10. Well due to quarantine stress (and having to go back to work when I should be staying IN quarantine, lol) I didn't make any more progress on last round's dress and top, but the top is probably going to end up looking more like a bra in the first place so I'm picking up where I left off, haha! And I guess being worn under the vest would make the dress qualify as underpinnings on a technicality? :XD: That's really stretching it to the limit, I admit, but if the dress works out it'll be a great pattern for a little nightgown with some small adjustments! So let's just call the dress my tester ;)

    11. I hope to join in this round with my green lady, Sativa! She's a Doll Chateau Ona, who very recently (as in, 2 days ago) got an overall concept. Please excuse the old pre-faceup photo:

I've decided to go with a "frog witch" kinda theme for her, and hope to use this round to make her a lightweight nightgown/under-dress, and maybe a pair of bloomers.

    13. Don't know if I will join this round. I won't be at home so it may be difficult. But I can't wait to see your projects. =)

    14. Alrighty, day 1 and here's my rough-n'-tumble dive in!

Got my boy out of his tops and prepped for the pattern drafting. I'll be eye-balling everything and reverse engineering his shirt by tracing his hoodie right up and adjusting to the length I want completely free hand. I want it loose and comfy looking, so I'm not worried about total accuracy here.

      SP - PJs 01 - Doll prep.jpg

Placed him on the shirt to gauge where I want the wolf eyes to line up. I decided around his torso seem-line was looking good. (personally not a fan of picture shirts putting the eyes exactly over the nipple zone, cause that's very silly and uncanny to me, so a bit bellow that feels right to my mind.)

      SP - PJs 02 - Picture position.jpg

I placed his loose hoodie on the paper and marked out the key points. Shoulders, armpits, shirts width. Then I free handed a V-neckline. Folded the paper in half down the middle and cut out the better looking line to get a symmetrical piece. I then traced the sleeve line and free handed a sleeve shape.

      SP - PJs 03 - Draft from hoodie.jpg
      SP - PJs 04 - Rough Draft.jpg
      SP - PJs 05 - Rough draft sleeve.jpg

I compared the shirt piece to make sure I got the length I wanted to the doll.

      SP - PJs 06 - Size up.jpg

Then double checked the shoulder line and V-neck directly on the doll. Looks good to me.

      SP - PJs 07 - Shoulder and neckline check.jpg

Pattern pieces ready. Before I cut the shirt, I'm going to get some scrap fabric and test this out for a fitting.

    15. My model will be the only complete girl doll that I have now which is Odette (Xun - Resin Soul)

I would love to make sexy night wear for her since she already sewn her a set of pajama last month. It will be the first time I work with chiffon fabric. I hope I can make a good outfit for her again :blush

    16. Of course it does. An easy to wash garment worn next to the skin is definately underwear.

That sound great and she is so pretty in green.

      She's a lovely doll!

So, I've decided on what to do for this round!
About forever ago I participated in the Sewing Project when the theme was "traditional" (or something like it). I made an oufit ispired by what would have been worn historically in the area where I grew up (south east Sweden, very rural) around 1900-ish, although I admit I never tried to do a strict recreation or anything like that, I mosty tried to catch the over all aestetic. This is what was done during that month:
So, what's wrong with this picture?
Well, except for the shift, there is no underwear. For the photo she borowed a few things from other outfits to get the skirt shape right, but that's it. So I'm going to remedy that this month.
      She will need:
*Petticoat, this will be quite long and wide and possibly from a nice enough fabric that it can be worn on it's own for casual days, so it counts as comfy wear, right?:abambi:
*Corded petticoat, while they were far from the height of fashion, they were still being used to some extent and it's an easy way to get a bit of volume without things becoming too rigid or large, she does still need to be able to do at least house work in it, after all.
*Stubb, this is a type of bulky, short-ish, quilted petticoat that was worn both for warmth and for volume. Underwear they are, "delicate" they are not. They are often made from quite corse fabric and clearly not ment to be seen.
*Under apron. Yes, that's a thing. When worn they would be worn on top of the petticoat but under the outer skirt and were typically made from corser fabric. They were used as towels, pot holders and according to some sources, handkershiefs. Made to be easily washed and worn between the layers, so they didn't need to be pretty. And they could of course be used as a main arpon when doing dirty jobs as well.
*Pockets. Loose pockets worn under the skirts were out of main fashion by almost a century by this time, but were still being used in rural areas.

So, that's a long list... If I get half of it done I will call it good enough.

    17. I've got a little (really little) progress to report! Here I've compared the flat pattern (cut incorrectly, so we'll see how it goes!) to the other side, with the chest dart sewn and top hem pinned in place. I think what I'd like to do is sew the two pieces together at the center and gather, but I may decide I want to show off the pattern over the whole piece rather than highlight a detail. We'll see how busy it looks with the stitching in place! I'm amazed by my luck, the dart is in an almost perfect spot to continue the pattern unbroken. I don't think I'll be that lucky with the other side, but oh well! Not bad for just happenstance.

    18. Hello everyone, hope you're having a fantastic or productive Friday.

Today, I managed to assemble a test shirt based on yesterday's pattern.

      SP - PJs 09 - Test shirt.jpg

It came out like a very nice tunic for my boy. And I even added a few little details to customize it beyond just a plain shirt. Like machine embroidery on the neckline and reverse-hemming the sleeve and bottom to give it the illusion of a layered hem.

      SP - PJs 10 - Test shirt neckline.jpg
      SP - PJs 11 - Test shirt reverse hem.jpg

As a tunic, this fit him perfectly. But for the wolf shirt I think I'll widen the width to make it more baggy. I'm estimating about another 2cm (1 on each side) will be the looseness I'm looking for.

      SP - PJs 12 - Test shirt accepted.jpg

In any case, I'm glad I have a new dark shirt for him now. It gives his jacket a darker look which makes me happy :)

    19. @Lillith you've got an incredible lineup this month! I'd love to see a side by side comparison of how it looks with the borrowed pieces versus the final setup!

@TheBlueWazaga it's looking great! I love it when a test piece works out well enough to be its own finished garment <3 He's gonna look so comfy with his wolf shirt!

    20. Thank you. I'll do my best!
So far, the only thing I managed to get done is to fail to find a good petticoat fabric in my stash.

    21. Hello all! It's absolutely @Mamo to blame for me being here, so quick call out at them, ahaha. They kept talking about you guys so I wanted to come see what they were hyping. <3

I... definitely need to join in. I keep saying I'll make underthings and just, soft chill things for my dolls to wear, and two bodycon dresses and a lace monstrosity later not a bra, panty, petti, or t-shirt to be found.

    22. @Mamo I'm comin' I'm comin'...

It says to pick a model, but honestly it's just gonna be everyone getting new underthings. So I've got two vic--I mean volunteers, at two sizes to show off completed pieces.

Ophelia is a Minifee Ingrid in tan with large bust, which will make bra fittings an adventure. Verde is an Only Doll Lu Er in white, which pretty much guarantees I will not be taking pictures of anything in white or cream for my big girls.

I look forward to inundating y'all with frankly obscene amounts of doll underwear. -salute-

    23. Looking forward to it! New faces are always welcome.
These projects are super for getting long planned things finally done and having some company while doing so. I have them to thank not just for a decently sized chunk of my dolls warderobes, but also for low pressure practice at keeping dead lines.

    24. I'm finally off work for the summer so I'd love to join this round I need to sew for my dim boy doll body with dim half closed eyes head, Larina. I made this outfit for him from scratch before he arrived a long while back and it fits dim girl body better then his. His body is smaller. I want to make him comfy dungarees' that convert to night pants and a slouchy top. I have it in my head as I don't often use patterns because I can't follow directions, and I love sewing on a whim. Never know what you're going to create and it's like a puzzle, you have to figure a way to fix mistakes and sometimes it ends up amazing. lol I plan on a colorful outfit, lets see what happens. ;)

    25. Okay, I've got a lingerie pattern and a lot of peachy silk habotai--my goal is to (fingers crossed) make a cute n fancy babydoll out of it for Aurelie... Wish me luck, I have not been able to focus on sewing lately. But maybe this will help get me back to it!

    27. Hello everyone. I hope you all have the loveliest of days.

      It is time!

Today we butcher a shirt, to make a shirt!

After editing the width of my initial test pattern, I dove in and just spent an hour chopping up the shirt and assembling it. I will admit, I'm rather happy that I was also able to preserve the brand marking on the backside. Just a little detail that makes me pleased.

      SP - PJs 13 - Face cut.jpg
      SP - PJs 14 - Front.jpg
      SP - PJs 15 - Back.jpg

And fitting it on my boy, Kevin.

      SP - PJs 16 - Final shirt.jpg
      SP - PJs 17 - Final shirt 2.jpg

Next, there's a whole half of a shirt (the full back side) I'll be butchering to make matching pajama shorts. Pants are my bane, but I think since these will also be loose, it should be fine, right?

Take care all, and best of luck!

    29. Oh yes…welcome one and all!:) It’s so lovely to see new faces here, as well as older ones too. It’s so much fun sharing our projects, processes, and dreams here. I love the friendly support, general help, and celebrated successes we all share as we work towards building our dolls’ wardrobes.:thumbup It’s wonderful to have people to share our efforts with.

I started following these threads years ago…long before I ever began hosting them, when the intrepid @Wynn was hosting them. I must say they really kept me on track and productive with my own sewing for my large cast of characters, so I know from experience how helpful these threads can be…not to mention fun!;)

Oh my, well done you! This turned out great…such a perfect cut for a comfy pajama top. The wolf’s head came our looking so good.:D

    30. @Teddy Thank you kindly! Appreciate it.

@PoeticSoul Thank you! Yeah, I'm very happy with how the wolf face fit once the size was adjusted. I'm looking forward to making the matching short with the remaining material :)

    32. @mydaffer I'm curious to see what you come up with. Your plan sounds fun!

      @TheBlueWazaga Good progress so far!

I am very grateful to you for doing it. I love these projects. I don't alway join every month and even when I do I don't always get everything i plan done, but over the years it adds up. So, thank you!

I have finally found some fabric to use for the skirts:
The striped fabric is for the main petticoat and the white stuff is for the corded petticoat. The middle fabric is my current top candidate for the stubb, but I will keep looking because the colour is so close to the striped fabric and plain or striped fabric would be more typical for the garment. We'll se what I can find.

    33. Hello, lovelies, hope everyone is having a good start to the week.

Today, I tackled assembling the pajama shorts. And it was such an intense level of focus that I failed to pause for pictures.

For the pattern, I turned to the "Cargo Pants for 66cm male doll" by Missy's Imaginings from Youtube.

My boy is 65cm and on the slim side, so the waistband came out wider than expected even with darts. I opted to give it a draw string and call it a day. So here he is showing off his miles of leg XD

EDIT: I forgot to mention, I only gave him side pockets from the pattern. No square or extra pockets.

      SP - PJs 18 - Completed.jpg
      SP - PJs 19 - Completed2.jpg

This was certainly a well timed challenge and I thank this group for giving me the inspiration, encouragement and a mental boost to be a little more dedicated to making clothes for my dolls. I'll be cheering you all on your own projects. But I'll end mine here for this month because I'm a hobby gremlin and need to do other things un-doll related, too XD

Looking forward to seeing everyone's progress. You got this!

    35. I love tht the stripe and the check go so well together. Such a shame it's not the ideal combination for the outfit you want.

Goodness, you've gotten it together fast.

      Fingers crossed!

I'm hoping to have a full-sized sewing project (hand sewn 18th Century stays) finished and handed over to the friend it's for on Wednesday evening, and then fit something for this round into the remainder of this month before I have to start on a couple of rag-doll commissions in July.

    37. They are not a perfect match, but they are pretty close. I could totally see myself doing something using both fabrics in one garment at some point, there will probably be some left over after this.

No reason why you shouldn't be able. If you get stuck, people here can help you trouble shoot and if you don't finish in time there will always be later.

Today I've cut out and sewn the main seams (everything that could be done by machine without showing) on two striped petticoats. I only ment to make one originally, but the way I had to cut the fabric it made sense to cut two at once and I do have plans to make several of my 1/4 dolls similar outfits, or at least outfits that doesn't look out of place together, at some point.

    38. I'm not at home right now, I'm at my friend's home. I have very few things to sew. ^^' So I will try to make it but don't know how it will turn lol.

    39. It's been a while since I've participated in a sewing project round, and this one was one I was looking forward to, but tbh I haven't finished any of the previous ones I started :sweat

There's a particular nightgown style outfit from a fashion game I'd wanted to create for a while that would fall into this category, but I have yet to see any good fabric for it anywhere, at least not in the right colours.

Maybe I should use this round to make a draft version in plain fabrics?

      Here's some example images of the outfit: 1 / 2 / 3
There's technically some props and accessories that go with it, but I'll leave those for a later time.

I might alter the design a little bit; it seems to be an off shoulder nightgown with an undergarment, but I will probably change it to an non-off shoulder type, and alter the undergarment design to be more simple. I already have some basic tights that would match pretty well too.

I've only got one doll at the moment, the one in my profile image, so she'll be the model for this project! Though I do hope to make the proper, non-draft version in other sizes eventually as well, whenever I get to that.

    40. That's what the "Unfinished Business" rounds are for

It would certainly give you a headstart for making the actual garment in a future round if you already had the pattern and fit details worked out.

    42. Well, I actually marked out and began to cut the pieces for the lingerie I plan to make Aurelie--only to realize I'm totally out of Fray Check! I don't know when THAT happened, but with so many seam finishes kind of out of the question... I'll have to get more before I can continue. At least I got some silk thread in the right color! (If only I'd known when I was at the store THAT time, but... welp...)

My plan is to make a tulle and silk camisole top and some matching tap pants out of this very light silk habotai I picked up on a whim from Mood a while back... I'm not sure how well the habotai will hold up, mind, but I think at this scale it should work out well and be nice and floaty and sheer. We'll see how this goes! I think I might hand sew a lot of it, too, just to save me the stress of my machine eating the habotai. Although I do have plenty of fabric to try over and over... It's small enough that it's not a huge time investment, really.

Failing that, I can certainly use more of this mint voile I've got to make a different set!

    43. Edit: I Figured out the images!

Hello all, I’ve been secretly lurking in the background this round, I’m not sure if I'll be able to finish, as I’m leaving at the end of the month for some onsite school labs.

Project: Edwardian Lace Petticoat. And chemise (if I have time)

Doll: iplehouse FID, athletic build. She’s not here yet, but I’d like to go get some clothing done so when she does, she won't be naked lol. Her concept is dark-victorian/Edwardian curse breaker, cousin to Marry Poppins. Time period is late 1880-1910 ish.

      Material: lightweight cotton lawn 0.5m.

      pattern: http://www.marquise.de/en/1900/schnitte/s1900.shtml

      - I initially drafted the Astarte skirt, but then changed my mind and went with the 5 part skirt.

side seams were done in french seams, and the lace was done with the sewing machine. I was going to do it by hand, but with the stress of school, I didn't have the patience to do 3m of lace insertion.

I am currently at the stage of "I hate everything about this" and "I regret all my life choices" lol

      Mock arraignment
I think I dislike the chevron insertion lace, and the pin-tucks dont gather the way I wanted them to. I think I have some re-arranging to do.

    45. Well done!

The petticoat is going to be so pretty (I made a similar one in half scale last month for one of my OT dolls using the bottom section and ruffle from an actual Victorian petticoat (already removed from the original petticoat when I bought it as an "antique offcut") as the bottom half).

What don't you like about the insertion - it looks pretty good in your layout of the pieces. I can see how you might want a bit more plain fabric between the top tuck and the gathers in the bottom ruffle, but the insertion part looks good (to me, at least).

    47. Welp, I now have an FID Doria arriving in a couple of days and she's going to need underthings as well.

    48. I've finished both striped skirts. Daisy is modelling the second one so I could show them side by side.

This is without any petticoats, the stiffness at the hem will soften with use.

But now I realize that I may have accidentally put myself in a situation where I need to make enough shifts to go around for all the girls. I have some hopes that I could use Matildas extended warderobe to dress up more than one lady at once, but that does require a few extra pieces...
Oh well, shifts are underwear too, so If I have time I can do that for this month as well.

Next up is the corded petticoat. I've decided to cheat a little and do a quilt panel along the bottom with a quilt pattern to simulate cording instead of doing it for real. This is mostly because any cord small enough to look in scale is going to be thin enough that it will be hard to feel it clearly through the fabric, making sewing it in place would be a bit tricky. I will use a thin cotton flanell for the pad layer. I think it will be more than enough to give a bit of that soft fullness needed and if not it will take startch every bit as well as the cord would have.

    49. Very nice and they do indeed look pretty enough to wear as an outer layer as well.

It's fun seeing you put these traditional outfits together.

I've been enjoying seeing the full-sized traditional Sweish outfits that a friend in Gothenburg makes for herself come together. She often posts about them on her Instagram account and they're always such pretty outfits. She dablbles in dressign dolls too but I don't think she's made any for her dolls (yet?)

    50. Thank you, kindly!

Traditional outfits are a lot of fun, but quite a maze as well. There is preservation bias, of course. There are local variations, sometimes over very short distances geographically. And there is always the problem of what was worn for different ocations and who wore what. Lot's of things that would have been obvious to the people who wore the clothes, but tricky to nail down now.
And to make things even more of a mess, there are now standardized "traditional" costumes that are used mainly by people doing folk dancing and such that are based on historical garments, but not always accurate and very often made to be the same for much larger areas than they would have been historically, making research even more of a challenge.

But on the bright side, this isn't really that long ago and lots of stuff survives in museums and in the attics of old farm houses in the region. :)

    51. Wow, you're sewing is beautiful! I love the materials and design.

Gulps, I think I'm embarrassed to post my stuff, I may need to start over or give up at this point. :(

Can't wait to see this outfit completed! ;)

    53. Don't be embarresed! Every skill level, every take on the theme and every size of project has equal value in a place like this. These projects are all about inspiration, encouragement and motivation.

    54. Thank you, I'm going to try again and call this practice, since I sew from scratch I learned a few things and would like to try again. I can't give up but feel like a kindergartner learning the abc's.... while everyone else is in a whole other league. :doh

    55. Thank you, I'll try again. I think I feel more encouraged to try harder now, before it was just cut, sew and fix.

    56. You know, that is pretty much what I did with these skirts. They are just straight rectangles, hemmed and gathered to a waistband (also a rectangle). I improvised all the way. :XD:

    58. *Quietly holds hands up with two thumbs up*

I read everyone's posts but I got overwhelmed with where to respond. XD

I just wanna say generally you all are fantastic to watch. I love the under dress and the two striped skirts shared so far. And big encouragement to @mydaffer to carry on. You're doing great and it's totally fine to do do-overs and improve on what you made :)

    59. It's all good. Just chip in where/when ever you feel like it. That's mostly what I do - and sometimes I just scroll through to admire what peole are working on but don't have time or mental-energy enough to comment.
