Glad you guys all like him! Guess what? I'm casting Bastian's final version tomorrow. Then I'll be devoting all my time to my little Nephilim. I've already got the junk cast of his torso done! So excited about that. I'm selling one of my big dolls in order to buy enough silicone to finish the Nephilim. I'm sad, but at the same time I am SO EXCITED! he's very very close. Everything is sculpted, but needs a little sanding before being popped into the molds. i also need to order some extra long drill bits. x_o;;
Resin CAST! Well of his torso, head, and pelvis anyway. This head cast got a little squashed. Gotta place the rubber bands in a different configuration. XD These are from the junk molds. After all the trouble I went to sand Bastian's head perfect, when I cast him he was still a mess. So many imperfections showed up in the resin that I couldn't see even on the primed original. So... I decided that I'm not going to bother with the head ache of getting the original smooth as a baby's butt, because I just can't. Plus where the ball joins to the SS it's very weak and keeps crumbling. O_o;; So I've just sanded it as best I can(it is VERY smooth, but not perfect) and begun casting the junk molds. *edit* This is Fenrir, one of the other heads. :3 his head ended up being a little more finished than Crow's. The third head, Horus, I have yet to sculpt. I ordered some eyes in different sizes to try in him... they should be here later this week. He's a few different colors since I realized that my current resin sets up too fast for me to pour all the parts at once!
Dear Diary, I finally got eyeballs. My eyes are entirely too close together because my mold was squashed. Oma has assured me that she will figure out how to correct this and recast my head in a few minutes when she fixes cousin bastian's head. She also finally painted me, I feel much more positive about myself. It felt even better to have hair, which she kindly made me tonight. However... i'm not sure about her choices. I understand they're just swatch samples, but well... as you can see the first two are sort of... fruity. I look like I'm in a Kabuki Theater in the red wig, and the white wig looks like something that Tina Turner should own- either as a wig or a pet. The black one I like, and I understand it is to be that vampiric bastard Crow's. I don't trust any vampire, especially one that smiles that much and is named for a diety of trickery. The grey is exceptionally nice though. I was even able to style it the way I like to have my hair. it's a bit... poofy... but I think I can live with that. Oma tells me it will be less poofy when she has it sized correctly, as at the moment it's too small. very well, I am patient. i am simply happy to exist. I will be happier when Horus joins us. I admit I feel a little lost without my brother, much as I hate saying that. I am looking forward to having appendages also. Oma said she might resculpt my hands, which i feel are too large... but she keeps saying she likes big hands on guys. However, these are large enough that I worry that I will not be able to accomplish things that require fine motorskills and slim fingers. Like tying my shoes. -Fenrir
Was that a quote to mold and cast the entire head and body? They gave me a quote that was that much just for the MOLDS! The casting would have been a lot more, too. Plus, they said they couldn't take any more work on for about 5-6mos....did they tell you that also?... They didn't seem too thrilled when I mentioned bjd, for some reason. I think the bjd are more work for them than the other dolls that they typically do? Dunno... I was disappointed because I wanted to give them a try.
That was for just the molds, casting was $150 a doll. At first it seemed fine... then I cast Bastian's head. it was so easy... sure, it's not 100% right every time, but if I make a mistake I can fix it right away instead of having to pay someone to fix it for me like i would with them... Now that I know what's involved, I'd rather just do it myself and not have to wait on someone to tell me what my sculpting mistakes are... since there are lots. XB at any rate, I find I really enjoy casting. n.n;
Exactly! I'm going to start doing my own molding and casting also, as I found that you do run into limitations in having to wait for someone. And also, when you haev things that you want to try and then trying to explain it well enough for someone else to understand what it is that you want to do. I think that the $150 casting would have been more than that if you had wanted perfect pieces...I'll bet that at $150 that will give you pieces with seams and not perfectly smooth, so you'd have to sand quite a lot. I paid extra to have seams removed, and pieces smoothed---which they are, but I'm still having to do a lot of sanding anyway. Did you find that slush casting worked well for all of the pieces? That's what I was going to try for some of them. Eventually I'd like to get a small rotational machine.
Wow, he's cool... you should dress him up like Vash the stampede :P I love his profile and the shape of his eyes. Mature male dolls are the best, and are pretty under represented. If you get a company like lumicast to produce your doll and due to unforseen circumstances the moulds break, do you have to pay for them all over again? And a question for Fancyboots... I'm nervous about asking... but who did you go to to cast your doll in the end? @_@
yeah, the $150 was without the sanding or cleaning. :P the casting is the easier part for me! As for slush casting... it's a lot of work. I first do a slush cast, then I pad the inside with clay till I get it the thickness I want and then fill the core. I found extra long drill bits at the hardware store for pretty cheap, drilling the parts isn't too hard. I was afraid I'd break it, but it's not that hard really. :3
thanks! Glad you like him! I like the unoa boys a lot... and the minifee, but I wanted to make a more mature body... since the minifee girl and unoa girl looks so mature. X3 As for lumicast... I don't know. If the mold breaks from something they're doing while they cast I'd assume they'd fix it. But they said it won't last longer than probably a year.
Do you have a list of curious buyers? :P and I have great respect for your sculpy modelling My sculpey doll is driving me bonkers, I find I have better control with air dry clay. You're so nice
I'm having Michael Langton in New Hampshire do the work for me. In the future, I'll probably try it myself as costs were 3x more than I expected and budgeted for.
No one yet... I've sold a couple of bastian's heads, but casting them has been a bitch. XD I'm still learning. :3 But it's totally worth it. I started using SS when I was about 12, so I've gotten a lot of experience at it. the book I learned to sculpt from was this: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/08...ref=sr_1_1/104-6434074-8912714?_encoding=UTF8 It's for sculpting people and basic faces in super sculpey or other polymer clays. :3 I suck at air dry clay. X3;;; so we're even! @D@//
Dear Diary, Today I got thighs. Oma tells me they were a bitch to drill out, but that she's very happy with how they turned out. I worry that my hips stick out a bit, but I think it's because of my muscle tone. Hm. I am hoping that I will have a full set of legs by tomorrow evening. I will finally be able to stand on my own, this makes me very happy. I know the sooner I get legs, the sooner I get arms and hands and then Oma will sculpt my brother's head. Here I am next to V also for size comparison. I am forming a plan to steal his pants. I am, however, worried. Oma keeps tossing around a vial of blue stuff that looks like the colored stuff she puts in cousin Bastian's resin. She also has another curiously silver filled vial. Will one of us end up a blue elf? I am not sure this is an altogether happy arrangement for me. :S
Go Batchix! I've been waiting for you to put more stuff up. I'm always waiting impatiently for you or kaye to put more pics up :P I just can't get over the detail in his neck area, such nice collarbones ^_^
Verbana: Awww~ thank you! I need to fix his mold so I can cast his calves and feet! @D@ MORE HOT GLUE~ more mold boxes... more casting. XD Kaye: Thank you!! I think he'll be very happy to get his legs so he can run from me.
I hope you make a tutorial when you cast the arms, ect. You have such amazing skills.. It's not fair OwO
I'm going to dip a dowel rod in silicone for the core mold. n.n; I'll be doing that for the legs here shortly. I need to get to work. ._.;; my ability to sculpt is nature's way of making up for my inability to cook, bake, or do math. :3;;
QUOTE: I need to fix his mold so I can cast his calves and feet! @D@ MORE HOT GLUE~ more mold boxes... more casting. XD Hi Batchix, Don't know if it will help or not but I've found a way to make mother molds easily AND it saves on silicon (wish I had found out sooner!!) Anyway .. I use stuff called Magic Sculpt and I put a layer of clay over my sculpt (as thick as you want the silicon mold to be) then I roll out a thin sheet of magic sculpt and cover half the clay covered sculpt .. let it dry .. seal edges with vaseline .. apply second half of mother mold .. let it dry!! then you can take to clay off your sculpt .. place the sculpt back in the mother mold and pour your silicon around the sculpt. That's just a very basic description but if you want to know more PM me .. or I can take some pics of my mother molds and do a tuitorial if anyone wants to see!
ooh~ I think you should seriously do a tutorial! I THINK I get what you're saying but I'm really not sure. Right now my process is to cover the original in a thin layer of silicone, let that dry, then another layer mixed with chopped up bits left over from old molds. It works pretty well... but I still go through a lot. Granted if I stopped screwing up it'd work better. o_o;
I'm sorry to highjack your thread, but I'm really curious if anyone knows how much heat a basic dolfie will take, I want to sculpt over a 1/6 body but I don't know if the core will take it......I know they make special dolls for this purpose that can go in the oven, has anyone heard of this? Thanks.
I've never heard of that... o.o; A regular 1/6th will probably release toxic fumes if you heat it in the oven that much and I know it'll get rubbery. I'd probably take papermache and wrap the 1/6th in that, let it dry, make small inscisions to remove the papermache and put clay over the papermache.
When I get it right, sure thing. XD;; I'm not doing too well with the leg core molds. the holes keep migrating. D:
^^;; I actually tried this, only I set the Sculpey in boiling water instead of in the oven. (A few minutes in boiling water followed by a dip in ice water will harden Sculpey right up!) It didn't hurt the plastic parts of the doll (I left the head off), but the joints went all floppy. Soo... I wouldn't recommend heating a 1/6 if you want to use the joints, but if you're making a BJD out of it somehow... that might be okay...(dunno if you can do that). There's always Apoxy Sculpt, anyway.
Apoxy, is that like Magic Sculpt? I'd considered that, it certainly wouldn't ruin the doll!!!! Then there's the task of either recasting as is or trying to cut off the newly shaped model so that the obitsu can be reused for the next sculpting project *sigh*
Ok maybe you can help me. The thing that stumps me is how do you get two parts to look the same! For instance to upper arms left and right and two hands or two feet. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated!
Lots of measuring. :{ Since they're the same but opposite, you can't just cast the same part over. I make both sides at the same time and try to pay careful attention as I go as to wether it's the same size or not.
Well heck. I have no idea how I managed to miss your guy!!! That is one fantastic body. As it happens, I had to sign up for 3 credits "in the semester in which you take comprehensive exams" so I signed up for Art Appreciation. One of those courses I always wanted to take and never had time for way back when. Annndd... one of the most recent people I've run across is your Bernini and his lovely sculpting! Pretty amazing that you could look at that and emulate it so well. I can tell that one of these days I'm going to have to try this. Even if it just turns out a funny looking lump (Would fit right in around THIS house, methinks.) So... where are Bastian and Marta, the Final Chapter? I really would love to see how they turned out! Or did I just miss them in the shuffle...
Hehehe~ thanks! I actually managed to cast his legs with working core molds the other night! AND I figured out how to use my dremel to drill out the insides of his arms. woo! but I need to sculpt new hands and feet for him, the first ones were... um, yeah. they were sort of awful. :S You can see Marta and Bastian on my sale thread here: http://denofangels.com/forums/showthread.php?t=93763 Funny enough, I originally went to school in Denver at the Institute of Art as a 3d animation major. X3 It was back when they were still on Grant St and I lived in the building down the street that says "Gotham City" on it. XD
I had planned on the dowel dipped in silicone, but was worried that the silicone would rip coming out since it would be relatively thin around the wood. I'm the end I opted to try drinking straws, they could be sprayed with mold release, they might not even stick any way and even if they do, they are easy to cut down and hollow already to boot! Pouring my first mold like that today, so I'll let you know in a couple of days if it works or not!
I grabbed some of the giant straws used for boba tea and stuck a dowel in it for support. X3 It worked pretty well so far!
Thanks guys! I'm working on him off and on... I need to borrow my friend's higher RPM dremel for working on his arms. Hopefully I can re-use the molds I already made of them, but we'll see. :S
aww~ thanks! Hopefully I'll work up the nerve to do the bottoms of his legs and fix his arms tomorrow. I get so worried I'll screw up that it's hard for me to proceed. X3 This is what I'm working on sculpting wise atm. He's a zombie doll. I popped a few of my dolls heads on to see what fit. X3
Wow! The style of that torso really matches your Bastian head too! Very distinct! About how tall do you think that torso will be in the end?
The torso is about the same length as hound's. He'll be about an inch shorter than hound in the end I hope. I want him to be inbetween 60 and 70cm so he'll have plenty of clothes to wear. X3
ohmssss i want to see a bastian's head casted!! xD it looks george!! n_n a friend of me thinks that your death-dolls could be a great morpheo, from sandman xD
Batchix never ceases to amaze me... i still love the timmian..... i can't wait to see the rest of the sculpts!
XD You know, after I moved i threw out most of the parts from this mold because I was so frustrated with it! Some friends came over and dug him out and I've started looking at him again... I might try re-sculpting it sometime. :3
Yess!! Re-sculpt him! >.<; Poor guy... you threw his molds out. He must've been frightened.! XD hmm... But maybe when you re-make his body you could make him a little less thin. ( It's just a personal opinion.^^)
