sculpting a more adult boy... First resin casts p4!

Oct 17, 2005

    1. First resin cast pics on p4! :D :D :D

Hehehe... okay, so I haven't sculpted in a while and was pretty unsure of myself. n.n; Sooo... this weekend i got inspired. I really want a Unoa sized mature boy, but I can't afford a Unoa boy right now(or um... for a while. XD). So I started sculpting again...

here's the torso I've gotten done so far! I've got a huge book of classical sculpture and i used that as a reference. I'm a huge fan of Bernini's work. :3 It has his and several of his students as well as greek and roman classical statues. It was a great reference. I followed Lithe-finder's suggestions, but I made a core for my doll out of alluminum foil. I sculpted the whole torso, then cut it where I wanted the joint to be. Then I opened it, smoothed the edges and baked it. then I pulled all the aluminum foil out. It's really strong! I'm using real wooden balls for the ball joints, but I usually re-drill them myself to get that strange shape that most ball jointed openings are. I'll be covering him in a thin layer of modeling paste to make him pale, smooth, and sexy. :D

    2. wow, that is very nice work! You should sculpt more often, you're clearly VERY talented... can't wait to see more ;)

    3. :o woah awesome! That muscle definition is just awesome!! I have no idea how you got out that tinfoil, but if it works for you, go for it. Keep going with him, he's beautiful ^^!

Wow, I inspired someone! :D Made my day!

    4. that's AMAZING
i love bernini too *huggles him*

sigh...i wish i had enough time to do that...i plan on making a doll, but the downside to being a student is homework.

    5. yes, how DID you get the tinfoil out? inquring minds want to know...

    6. Hi! Glad you all like him! He got an arm tonight. X3

I got the tin foil out by pulling with a pair of needle nose pliers after baking. I've done this a lot actually. :3 I takes a little time, but it works well for large hollow places. I used lithe-finder's melonballing method for the thinner parts on his arms tonight and that worked great too.

    7. Your boy is lovely and so inspiring! Thanks for sharing pics of him.

    8. question:
Im noticing that you are doing arms, torso etc... seperatly. How do you know its going to all fit and move smoothly? Or do you just squish the soft sculpy right into the baked joints?

    9. delbelcoure: Thank you! I'm glad you like him!

Illyrimur: I'm using actual wooden balls for his jointing, because I can't seem to make nice smooth round parts to save my life! XD Anyway, to make the joint I use that melon baller looking tool to scrape out a half sphere, then stick the appropriate sized ball into the socked. I'll post some pics of his arm here in a bit. It fits perfectly and holds poses pretty well!

    10. [IMG]

Now he is no longer unarmed! he can wave by by now. XD I'm dreading doing the hands and feet since I am typically NOT good at those. I'm going to do the arms, legs, hands, and feet first then I will work on the head. I HATE sculpting the other parts... so nerve wracking, so this way I'll have a "treat" when I'm finished. XD

    11. :o that is just god damn amazing... i am in awe *_*

    12. im probably driving you nuts with all these questions, but unlike the tutorials...u know what you're doing

if you cover something round (small styrophoam ball, wood, etc..) with sculpy, can you bake it? i know you used tinfoil, and im assuming wood for the joints , but i want to know what's safe to bake. And it looks like ur shoulder joints are attached to the sculpy of tha arm, so that's why im aksing.

    13. Since it's only baking at 275 degress, you can bake all kinds of stuff with the sculpey. Tinfoil, wire, wood, feathers, keys, springs, screws, marbles, glass, taxidermy tails, even thicker papers. It won't hurt the objects for the sculpey. ^^

I have never tried styrofoam, but I guess it'd be okay. Try it out on a test piece. ^^

    14. wow! that sculpt is VERY nice!!

I am making a doll, and someone i work with saw what i had done so far and asked "why don't you use acrylic spheres for the joints? i imagine a hand sculpted ball joint wouldn't move very smoothly." and i had no clue you could even get varying sizes of plastic balls. He said Tap Plastics has them.... might be worth checking out... http://www.tapplastics.com/

    15. Styrofoam will start to melt and give off toxic fumes. :3 But everything else is fine! Styrofoam has a very low melting temperature... However, the wood apparently had a little sap in it because that leaked out when it was baked and turned pretty dark at first. It lightened completely when it cooled tho. o_o; it's like the weird color changing silk I had...

Switchblade: I would be afraid that the plastic would melt, also super sculpey doesn't always adhere to really smooth things, so you'd have to sand the part of ball you want to attach. The wood has grain to it so it sticks real well. You have to drill an extra space on the ball so that it has more room for the stringing to move... I'll post a cross section drawing here in a second. :3

Kami-butterfly: Gosh thanks! :D I'm actually really suprised how he turned out. XD
http://denofangels.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=23898 these are how my previous ones turned out... Poor Bastian v2 never got finished still!

    16. [IMG]

here's how I cut the wooden ball so that the joint moves freely. The joint in his arms are cut this way. :3

    17. WOW! :o *in awe* That is gorgeous! That anatomy is superb. (Superb? Who *uses* that word?) I plan on making a BJD shortly because I'm poor... and I'd like to know what book you used? I actually had a weird dream after thinking a lot about this board in particular. o.0 All these anime characters were lifesize BJD's and I had to keep them in my house, except they were ALIVE. I blame you and your sculpt! ...j/k.

    18. :o Woah, I'll keep that in mind about the Styrofoam (never knew that)! XD Good to know.

That's also pretty cool with the wood balls, neat :D And I liked your other dolls too, they looked very antique and classic, and their faces were just lovely. ^^ Just because they weren't like "standard" BJD doesn't mean they are any less of a BJD. I like things that were a little different from the norm ^^ !

      Keep up the awesome work!

    19. It wasn't that they were different that was bad... it was the fact that they were super floppy. XD;; It was like trying to pose a drunk person! This little guy's being much more flexible. I can't thank you enough for the melon baller thing... I used to make all the cores by putting papermache over styrofoam like Noah's technique. that alone took about a week to make and then another week to dry!

    20. [IMG]

hehehe... head. This started as just practice and escalated as I got more frustrated. He's got two arms now and his first head. I plan on sculpting quite a few heads before I settle on what I will cast.

    21. Cool! :D His face reminds me of a punk rocker guy...*laugh*

    22. Augh, I love that body. Make SD13 male bodies for us to buy off you (pretty please omg?). :D

    23. Lithe-Finder: One of my friends accused him of looking like Kenny G! ;o;

Windswept: Thanks! Have you seen the Souldoll body? :D :D :D Theirs is uber sexy!

    24. omg, I totally know. *drools* I'm just a big fan of 'smalltime' stuff as much as the 'big companies'. Definately love my Volks and CP boys, but one of the appeals of my K_Doll head is that he's 'smalltime'. Closer to an individual creator thing.

...I hope that makes sense.

    25. I hope this doesn't offend you in any way, but he looks like Howard Stern.

    26. Argh. I can now see the Howard Stern-ness of him. ::shuddertwitch::

For some reason unknown to me, he reminds me of David Bowie in Labyrinth, but that's probably just because I've been watching the DVD over and over to get good shots of Sara's dress.

    27. Personally I think it's a good thing that he looks like Stern. ^^

    28. It's not that it's bad, it's just that I suddenly saw that and hadn't noticed it before. And got this image of Howard Stern as a little doll, alive. *pokes previous comment* I always have weird dreams, but whenever I come onto this site, the Night of the Living BJDs comes back to haunt me.

      ~~
In part of the dream Mugen of Samurai Champloo was acting like he broke his neck, while we were on a plane, and couldn't do his seatbelt. Which led to some interesting improvising to answer questions from the stewardess as to why his head was flopped forward. Someone also lost a headcap (I think it was Pretty Sammy >_o;; ), and other characters were complaining about not being able to sit up on their own in the movies. They could all move their eyes... OH, GOD, THE EY~ES! :barf Pretty much the creepiest dream ever. [/offtopic]

    29. My sister came to this thread and was like, "Who's Kenny G?" I Google image searched, and she said, " Is he Jesus?" And then she started the Jesus Madness. From Albinoblacksheep. "When you close your eyes, you dream JESUS!" and so on. She laughed so hard, her throat hurt.

    30. Ahahaha... XD Poor guy, he's either Kenny G or Howard Stern!

hopefully he looks like neither in the pink wig. X3 Did a photoshop face up real quick to get an idea of what he will look like when painted... *sigh~* soon I will be able to work on him again! GEEEEEh~ X3 SO BUSY.

the photo isn't entirely acurate... his face has more contours than it shows.. meh. but he takes 10 mm eyes. o.o;;; I tried 12 and they were way too big. I'm afraid that if I open his eyes any wider he'll look like this: :o

    31. [IMG]

even more! His legs look sort of gouged as I haven't sanded them. Once I got them on him I realized that they were WAY WAY WAY too thick. :S Sooo... I had to go back and re-sculpt a lot to be thinner. However, I really like the way he's going so far. :3 I gotta figure out what that filler stuff is that I need to help smooth him out. n.n; It's some kinda spray, right? :<

    32. looking good so far!!

all the proportions look right, and the detail is great!

can't wait to see him finished!

    33. Y'know, you're all like "Oh, I'm scared of doing hands, I suck at them..."
But then the hands are actually very good. :P

He's coming along really well! I like seeing more mature sculpts.

    34. You are doing an awesome work, I'm interested in the final result ^^

    35. Babytarragon: Thank you! I've been worried about that... the torso looks a tad long, but that's sort of how my guys are usually proportioned when I draw... that's my excuse and I'm sticking to it! :3

Armelia: thank you! That means heaps to me! I'm so nevous about doing it's mate! XD

Ami: Thanks! He's getting feet and his other hand tonight... hopefully tomorrow I'll be able to sand and smooth his legs too.

I found something cool out tonight. After sanding to a fine grade of paper, going over the SS with acetone smooths it out perfectly!

    36. He looks great!

I haven't been on in a while WOW you work fast!,. I like the shape of his body, It is long but i think it looks good and besides there are no BJDs i know of "or dolls in general for that matter" that aren't stylized to some extent or another.

I really like his upper body, especially his collarbones (I'm a big fan of prominent collarbones)

Ive never actually sanded sculpey before, does it sand well? and what grit do you start with?

    37. thanks Donn! Yee~ I'll probably be bugging you with more questions later. XD I am a big fan of collarbones too... especially when they're wearing dress shirts. <3 <3

anyway! Sculpey sands pretty well... I started with 150 on places that were really lumpy, like the legs, then I took more super sculpey and smoothed it in a very very thin layer on top of that. Then I take real fine grit like 350? I think it is? and sand that smooth. Once that's pretty smooth I take pure acetone and go over it real gently and that smooths it really really nicely because it melts it a bit. But you can only do that once... if I find i need to sand more after I'm done I take the brush attachment on my dremel and go over it. It also melts the SS a little from the friction and shines it up real nice. It's also really good at getting the sanded material off the peice.

Conceptart.org/forums has a section on sculpture and it has some nice tips about getting rid of the translucent quality of SS, but I didn't read that till long after sculpting... and I don't have a pasta maker. I'm gonna pick up some tester's primer today and try that out... I might hit up the forums at alumilite and see what they recomend as far as casting goes. I don't want to cast by myself ideally since the only things i've ever casted with previously were plaster. :B and that was a long long time ago.

also~ I strung him up again last night with the new head i sculpted! I'm worried about how the more gripped hand will cast, so he might end up with another hand.

    38. Wow, he looks nice! I'm amazed by how fast you work too!

    39. aww, he's cute! i'm really impressed by your work :D

    40. Armelia: Thanks! I've been shirking other responsibilities to work on him. Ohohoho the pile of dishes I did yesterday was HUGE!

      Mizbelle: Thank you! He's a labor of love~ X3

      More pics in a few days when I get done perfecting joints and sanding and PRIMING. Finally he will be all one color. @D@;

    41. Wow! He's so cool! I had no idea you did things like this...Roxy mentioned it the other day when we were looking at some posts here. I love it; can't wait to see him finished! <3

    42. I finally figured out who he reminds me off... To me, he sort of looks like a young Jean-Luc Picard. No, really.

    43. i don't remember if i've commented here, but WOW he looks very froudian! like a nymph or something. i'd love to see him when you're done!

    44. Mela: Aww~ thanks! You'll have to stop by and see him sometime! :D

Keladry: Ahahaha! XD I thought that too... but it could be his baldness.

Giantbeetle: Thanks! I grew up on Labyrinth and Dark Crystal, so I guess it's no wonder, ne? XD

    45. XD Jean-Luc... Too funny. Seriously though... He's beautiful! Are you going to cast him in resin?

    46. Tama: Yup! Well...eventually. I went to lumicast.com and got a qoute of $1500 to cast him, so I've got a long ways to save up. My fiendish plan is to cast an optional head for Hound and sell that to help me save up- and cast the head myself. I can't think that the optional head would be too hard to cast... I've cast before(a BOOB of all things) in Sculpture in college. But that was plaster. Sad Sad story involved in that. Our TA was going to show me how to cast in resin, but he graduated and moved away. Then a year or so ago I found out he killed himself. :( He was a really great guy. His wife moved back here and i see her sometimes and I just don't know what to say to her.

ANyway... to happier news, here's a pic of the head I'm going to be casting. His name is Bastian!

      he's an elf. :3

    47. Ah! So neat! I love him! *steals*

And from the other side of the whole not-knowing-what-to-say thing...It's awkward from the other side of the issue. My sister was killed in a car accident last year and people bring her up and it's hard to know what to say, and some folks just don't bring her up, and I'm discovering people who still don't know a year later! Just be natural and nice and if she mentions him, then go with it but if not, just 'hi, how are you? how are things? what's new?' is great. I hate it when people who knew Barb avoid me because they just 'don't know what to say.' But IMHO, you're much too nice to avoid her...

    48. Awesome Bats! I love the progress of your little guy too! Anywhere near ready have him meet Luci??? :D

    49. Mela: *hug* Roxy had mentioned that... I wish I knew Katie a little better, but I had only met her a couple times, but I saw Jody all the time. So at first I wasn't sure it was even her. :S

Kim: Getting close! I'd like to bring him up sometime so I can get an idea of what they'd be like together, hopefully after he's been primed(all grey) tho. The super sculpey is sort of translucent and doesn't give a real accurate view of what he really looks like.

    50. GREAT work batchix! I'm very impressed with your body sculpt and large head sculpt. Keep up the GREAT work!!!

      TK

    51. tkdesigns: Thanks! I'm so looking forward to casting him. Here's some more images of Bastian's head for those interested:

    52. :D Methinks I'm in love... *death*

That's a gorgeous head sculpt, Batchix!

    53. I'm absolutely astounded by the beauty of the head sculpt. I'm just gagging here... O_O So beautifull... cannot.. comprehend... *crashes*

    54. Oh my this opitional head is GREAT!

    55. hey Batchix,

i love these new pictures! He has so much personality - and is so handsome in such a darkly elegant way. I especially love the grace of his jawbone....

where are you on molding him? I need to go back and re-read the thread, are you molding him yourself, or having him done professionally?

would love to see more pics soon?

      patl

    56. He looks way cool! I think, however, that the nipples are up just a bit high. Womens' are more centered like that, but mens' are lower and more outward. ^.^

    57. Illves: If you check Bastian's thread, there are more pics of him there. :3 He's half way molded. e.e;

Cacau: Thank you! Glad you like him. :D

Patl: The little guy I'm going to probably get professionally cast because he's a lot of little pieces. :S But... casting Bastian was so /easy/ i might not. I don't know yet what I'll do. Bastian I'm casting myself. I tried a slush mold on my sample mold I made just to see how it went and it was pretty simple. If I slush cast stuff it's hollow, so no massive amounts of drilling!

Smidge: That's okay, because they got sanded off. XD;;; it was an accident!

    58. Wow! Awesome! X3

I love that head too! ^^ *bows*

    59. Holy crap! So awesome!!! *wants one*
