In a twist of irony, the Chronicle published an article today on the Terrace and how deserted it is. Unshockingly, Westfield didn't reply to the Chronicle's inquiry for comment. :-/ I'd be thrilled to do a photo walk of Chinatown, if that's what the group wants to do. Thanks for offering @Constance! As it's difficult to do mall cop/security without the mall, perhaps we should switch to no dress theme? Unless we want to do something loose such as 'vacation tourist' or go with traditional dress such as hanfu. Thoughts? (My arms are already sad at the thought, as only my really big boys have hanfu. Pretty sure the wig doesn't fit in my doll bag either. The touji is too tall. Suffering for photos reason #1063 ) As we are roughly two weeks out, every one put their votes in for place! It's too confusing for all if we change it again, so lets stick with this one. ------------------------ Pinging folks since we are changing plans: @Shopoke @St. James @CutiesaurousRex @Featherfire @Grimalkin @JennyNemesis @DayofDiana @Dinnerroll @Astro
For Chinatown, probably tourist or street style would work best! Hauling a doll around in hanfu would be a lot of work, and the buildings aren't Chinese to begin with
Derp. You are so right, I think I need more tea this morning. My brain is in too many places atm. Mmmm..... street style.
Street style or no theme is better for me, I don't have a ton of clothes anyway. Circumstances are forcing me to sell a couple of my dolls too, so it'll probably just be my Myou girl again, sorry I'm boring.
I'm cool with mall dystopia still, since I'd just be lying on the floor taking photos anyway, or Chinatown. The forecast for that weekend is supposed to be HOT tho.
If it’s too hot in Chinatown I’d just rather go with the mall Also, I will be coming with my dollgru 1/3 size doll ^u^ to whatever we decide on
I took a walk to Embarcadero Center today, and it has an ample amount of covered outdoor spaces with tables and chairs! Despite being Sunday afternoon, there were very few people as well. A few photos for reference: Spoiler: More pics under the cut I went to the Westfield mall before the Embarcadero Center, and it was crowded as heck, maybe worse than usual The area under the dome, of course, is still empty. Anyway, while I'm still happy to lead a Chinatown photo walk, since @St. James mentioned the heat, I'd rather not haul a camera and doll while under the sun My vote is for the Embarcadero Center. Even though it's still outside, I think it will be relatively cooler since it's close to the pier, and the shade and fountain at 4 Embarcadero Center should provide some relief as well. I'd vote for the mall, but it's just too crowded. For those driving in, Embarcadero Center does have parking, but I couldn't figure out from the machines how much it costs. I've heard that the parking garage at Portsmouth Square at the edge of Chinatown, a 10 minute fairly flat walk away, is pretty reasonable, though, if that helps. (Grab a milk tea or some ice cream before walking over lol)
I think that's a great idea! It's never crowded over there. Even when I was a kid I don't think it was ever crowded.
I’m down for embarcadero as well. Is bart walking distance or should I drive? I’m partially disabled and wanna make sure I can safely get myself there.
Embarcadero Station is about 3 big blocks from 4 Embarcadero Center! The area is flat, but I'd recommend you look up the distance on a map and see if that distance is within your comfort zone!
I like the Embarcadero terrace! I get off work at 1 that day so I'll try and make it! But I'll be up to an hourish late. Thanks for the parking advice! I also agree on streetwear or tourist theme or no theme. The mall cop idea is super fun for a future mall meetup! x3 Heck I might just bring a doll dressed in Barbiecore for the sake of the new movie. So if anyone wants to hyper pink their dolls with me, go for it! XD
Just to double check, are we meeting at the spiral seating space in the first photo?? I have only been here once, and am not familiar with the space.
I'd like to meet in the spiral seating area in the first pic. I've been through that area a couple of times and there's a lot of shade, it'll be great for a meet!
Sounds good to me! That area is at 4 Embarcadero Center (right past the entrance to Harborview Restaurant)! Edited to add, for those driving in, it looks like Embarcadero Center's weekend parking rates are rather reasonable (for San Francisco, anyway...) According to their website, it's $3/hr, which is actually better than Portsmouth Square's $4/hr.
Awesome! Updated the first post in the thread with all the new info, so no one has to hunt through the posts.
I'm interested in going. I'll bring my Momocolor Tasha and probably my PennyBlindBox doll. I gots an MSD too buuuuut too big to carry comfortably on BART for me. I dun wanna carry her all out like that.
I might have a +1! She's been out of the hobby for a while and is excited to attend a meet! (And like before, my partner will probably help me carry my dolls there and then drift in and out lol )
Me and my friend @TaShaa should be there if everything works out. I looked up walking distance and it doesn’t look to bad for me and my walker
Since it's a super easy bus trip for me, I'm probably going to haul my biggest boy out in some casual streetwear. Unless I suddenly decide to go for some Dore Alley weekend leather.
I’m still trying to decide who I’m bringing. Maybe my skater boy? I’m leaning, but still on the fence.
I'm also considering hauling a big guy out. Maybe one of the Mori9 boys if folks are interested in seeing them in-person?
Would love to see another Mori9! Our Lu Xians aren't quite ready for public consumption, so I'm bringing LLT Ludwig.
I'm here! I know I'm suuuuper early but I messed up my back on Thursday so I'm all about sitting down right now.
On my way! Gonna be there maybe around 2? Depends on bart. Can't wait to see everyone! I've got my MSD boi dressed to the MAX in Barbiecore!
This was a nice little meetup! It was nice to meet and re-meet with everyone~ I really liked this location, easy to get to, good layout, lots of photo taking options and food nearby. The only person who worked for the Embarcadero Center who stopped by just wanted to tell me he had an old Barbie and Porcelain doll collection and he was older and wondering where he could sell them. So much better than being told we couldn't be there or something! Let's do it again~
Lovers of the moon, prepare your chariot to embark on your way to this months mythical meet up. The August Moon Festival has its roots in Greek Mythology. Stemming from the story of the Titan goddess, Selene, which is also one of the Greek words for the moon. She was known to be the Titan Goddess of the moon and traversed the night sky in her silver chariot – the moon – which was drawn by two, snow-white, winged horses. Theme: August Full Moon Festival Where: 4 Embarcadero Center (right past the entrance to Harborview Restaurant) When: Sunday, August 27th Time: 1pm Masks: Yes For the comfort of all, I ask for all attendees to wear a face mask while in attendance. As everyone seemed to enjoy the new space last month, I figured we can go there again.
I'm in! Noooooo idea what I'm gonna do with that theme. Maybe I'll bring Moonchild in his fancy new outfit that I still haven't tried on him.
Won't be able to make this one unfortunately, I have something to do on the 20th and no way would they let me take two weekends in a row. Have fun and take lots of pics! Btw do we have anything like an official thread where we post pics from previous meets?
Hopefully you can make it out to the next one. ^_^ I’ve started a photo thread for us, you can find it here. Feel free to add your photos.
I'll be out of town during this one. Hope to see the pictures! I have some pics from the past meets to edit and add to the thread later!
I'm interested in joining! I just moved to San Francisco and I'd really like to meet you guys. I could bring my Switch Hwayeon, he just came back from the faceup artist's (not sure I'll be able to stick to the theme though, most of my doll clothes are still in packages )!
Welcome to the city! The theme is for fun, so no worries if you need to dress with something else. Looking forward to saying hi in person.
wow, I'm glad I checked this thread, I totally want to come! I'm just on the other side of the bridge, so looks like I could just BART in. woo hoo! is there an entrance fee or suggested donation? I would love to bring my 44cm but I don't really have a carrying case so I'm not too sure about carrying her on the BART. so, maybe one of my tinies...
No entrance fee, it's just an open air shopping center. There's a central spiral ramp that you can't miss, and some good tables behind it that everyone else tends to ignore. It's easy enough to toss a mini into a structured tote or shopping bag, no special carrier required.
do you encourage bringing stuff to trade? I have some clothing items that would be better used in other homes I understand if not though!
Alas, SF has some pretty strict laws around public sales, or even looking like you are selling. So we don’t have those activities at public meets.
For real???? There were several people who were selling/trading clothes at one of the SF park meets I went to several years ago. o.o Unless it's a recent law? That meet was in 2016. I would have never even thought there'd be any laws like that tho it makes sense when I think about it.
I agree on the tote bag suggestion! I have a carrying case for my 45 guy but I prefer carrying him around in a canvas tote bag :3 Helps ease the worry if you have a face cover for 'em, or you can add some small plush in there to help secure it if there's extra space. I've taken my dolls on bart a few times and it's not so scary! It'll be exciting to meet new people!
It's more that we're meeting on private property, and the security guards pay close attention. They were friendly/disinterested which is how we'd like them to remain.
thats too bad. i definitely only wanted to trade, not sell! but ill save it for the next convention nearby
Am I late for class?!? It's time for all the kiddos to go back to school. Be it lower grades or college, this time of year is inescapable. Alas the time for summer tans is over. Dust off those school uniforms, and come meet new friends. Theme: Summer tans & school uniforms Where: 4 Embarcadero Center (right past the entrance to Harborview Restaurant) When: Sunday, Sept 24th Time: 1pm Masks: Yes
Pardon the late post for this months meet theme. I didn't realize our weeks fell a bit weird this month and we sorta come up short.
