San Diego's 2nd BJD Con! December 4th, 2010

Aug 23, 2010

    1. Hey, a werewolf on the moon is a terrific idea! And don't worry about being too far out, because there's even a precedent for having a gorilla on the moon! (Robot Monster, a 1953 3-D Scifi B-movie, had "Ro-man", a guy in a gorilla suit and space helmet.)

    2. Haha, okay I won't feel too weird then if I just stick a couple little antennas or a fishbowl over my boy's head ;) dunt know what I'm gonna do with a couple elf girls, a couple fairies and a jrock boy, unless I make them part of some weird martian civilization haha We'll see...must go do research

    3. Yey~ Looks like i'll be there as a vendor~~~ i'm super excited. i'll be designing some steampunk inspired outfits to sell as well~ ^_^

    4. Awwweee!!!! I wanna go too!!! Managing a small retail store during the holiday season sucks! :(

Maybe my boss will take pity, but I doubt it. She keeps threatening me with extra hours. I really love the Amazons of the Moon theme! One of my dad's favorite movies is about Amazon women of Venus called "Queen of Outer Space," and I would love to make one of my girls a costume for it! :)

I'm gonna subscribe to this thread in case I can make it.

    5. Thanks!
      Got it!

    6. Sounds like fun! I might be able to make it. :)

    7. Just 31 days away! :dance :dance

    8. Exactly one month to go! :celebrate

    9. I know! I'm excited, though I still have lots to prepare. Do you know how many people are attending so far?

    10. lots of work to get done >_<;..lol
i cant wait to go tho.. super excited to see what every does for this <3

    11. The Mad Scientist Photobooth Diorama is in the throes of creation! This 1/3 scale diorama will have room for your Doll to play the part of victim or the mad scientist. We'll also have a professional photographer on hand to take photos and print them right at the con for a small fee.

:mwahaha Wuuuaha ha ha ha! It's alive!

    12. Yay! Sorry for the quickie quote of mine... I had problems with my PM inbox filling without me knowing it (stupid warning bar is all the way at the bottom of the page where I can't check it easily), and then I had problems with my regular email box as well (full of spam and very slow...). *sigh* Thankfully the BJDcollectasy folk are on the ball! :)

I can't wait for the con. And I still don't have any costumes planned (just don't have the right stuff for Classic and Crazy SF), so I won't be a prize-hog this year! :D

...although I might do something or other just for fun...

    13. I can't wait! My first BJD convention!!

    14. Sounds like fun! Looking forward to seeing people there! :)

    15. WOOO! I'm excited! now that i have officially tested out Akasarushi new fur wig storage system, HAHAHHAA. It'll make things a lot easier to move around! WOOO! Only few more weeks!

    16. I am getting so excited!!!

    17. BTW, the Doll Costume Contest will have three awards: Best Costume, Runner-up, and Most Creative. The decision will be made by ballot voting of all attendees. So get those costumes ready!

    18. Just 15 days to go! Woo-hoo! :celebrate

There will be a face-up table, so if you have a floating head that you want to practice on, bring it along. Paints and pastels will be available, along with a DVD tutorial.

    19. I am so excited!
How do we sign up for the costume contest? This is my first convention!
I commissioned the costume...it was not made by me...is that O.K.?

    20. If they run it like last year, you just sign up when you get there. ...And commissioned/non-hand-made costumes are OK.

    21. Thanks, April!

    22. 12 more days to the con! :dance

    23. So close!!! Is there still room for attendee registration?

    24. Just 10 days to the party!

I hope everyone has a wonderful Thanksgiving!

    25. :dance ONE WEEK ANNOUNCEMENT!!! :dance

:celebrate Bring a guest to the convention for free! :celebrate

Each paid membership can bring along one guest.

      See everyone next Saturday!

    26. Bruce, do you know if the Shop-with-a-Cop thing is the same day again? It kind of shut down traffic for a while as they were coming out of Sea World.

    27. D'Oh! I remember that! We were stuck for like 20 minutes!

    28. So excited! This'll be my first convention. Are costumes required for our BJDs? I don't have anything that'll fit the theme but I'd still like to bring them along. :)

    29. No--nothing is required, as far as I know! Just come with any dolls you want--or no dolls-- and enjoy yourself. :)

    30. Thanks for the reminder, Robin!

It looks like it is... although I couldn't find any info on exact times. Last year I got to the con by 9 and was okay. So, if it is like last year, the road along Seaworld drive and Mission Bay Drive will be closed for about 20-30 minutes for the Shop with a Cop procession around 9:30 to 10 AM.

I'll try to get more info before Saturday.

    31. Ooh yes, please keep us posted! I'd hate to be late because of traffic:o Also, is it really true that I can bring a guest for free? If so, that would be great! I have a feeling that my daughter might want to come last minute.

    32. Yes, it is true! One free guest per paid membership. :)

    33. It doesn't say on the main page for the con, but how many dolls are we allowed to bring? And can we bring our own furniture?

      Thanks!

    34. I'm pretty sure there are no limits on the dolls you wish to bring. I brought five last year. There were tables set up for dolls to be displayed... mostly for the costume contest, but not only for that, I think. and there were tables to sit at where people had set up dolls, too... There was room for furniture on the tables last year, not sure about this year. I brought a SD-sized chair last year.

    35. Yeah, as April said, there will be room for all the dolls you can bring. And furniture is welcome! It is probably a good idea to put your name on a hidden label on any funiture to make sure you get it back in case it is forgotten. Likewise, you should keep an eye on your dolls.

    36. Well I am probabably brining one- Luna- or two at the most, but we'll see what happens.

Does anyone have any requests? My list of dolls is in my profile- toooooo looooong to list in my siggie.

    37. Thanks everyone! I was pretty sure that there was no limit to dolls, and that bringing your own furniture was okay too, but I just wanted to double check before I moved anything in!

I'm thinking of bringing my Chiron centaur and a sleigh, that way people can get pictures of their dolls in "a one horse open sleight" if they wish!

    38. Robin and I will have a gazillion models with us so limit shmimit.

    39. That sounds cool! :D

    40. Alright I've got a little bundle of questions. :)

First, will the face up workshop be more of a paint-along type thing, or just an observation? (If it is a paint along should we bring paints etc?)

I own a big box light (April would have seen it at the last meet) that is lovely for lighting dolls! I'd be happy to bring it along if 1) it's aloud and 2) people would like to use it to take some pictures. I for one would vote yes for the light :) it's really lovely.

A general question for people attending, How do you bring your dolls? This will be the first event I'll have brought more than one and I'm not sure how to transport them. Do you bring them in their boxes?

And lastly, April - Will your Sard be making an appearance? :)

    41. Well, I have a doll carrier so I bring them in that.

    42. Imma be bringing all my boys! sad though. they don't have any new clothes to wear.. *sigh*

    43. A big Rubbermaid box is my usual mode of transport, considering I bring about 40 dolls on average.

    44. That would sound really crazy, if it wasn't for the fact that your 40 you bring are tinies, and combined they probably make up of big SD, lol.

    45. There will be a dedicated table set up just for face-ups. The demo will be at 11 with Gayle and a DVD. You can bring paints and a head if you want to, or just watch. After the demo you can replay the DVD as you work.

Feel free to bring the box light. We'll have a photographer with lights, but it's always nice to have options.

I wrap my dolls in soft kid's blankets and bring them in a large zippered shoulder bag.

      See ya on Saturday!

    46. I've added directions to the news thread. I've also included an alternate route in case you are driving to the con between 9:30 and 10 AM.

    47. Volks does the whole workshop thing, but most cons aren't set up for people to use paints that easily and the panels are usually shorter and most people are just watching and listening to the artist doing a demo. But if Bruce says paints are fine, and you feel like doing that (maybe get some personal input by asking questions, etc.), it could be a good idea. I know that I learn things better if I'm actually doing it...

It IS really nice! Lights with umbrella-reflectors. The bad lighting that usually makes meet-ups difficult for photos isn't a problem with those lights! :D

Boxes can be bulky, but definitely nice protection. I've got a doll carrier, but it only fits 2 60cm dolls with costumes that aren't too bulky... I'm going to be hauling a TON of dolls, I think... so I'm going with the soft kids blankets (like Bruce mentioned), and laying them carefully down in the back seat of my car. ... I just had to do a sudden stop in traffic yesterday, so be aware that this could happen and make sure your dolls don't go flying in the car!

The parking in easy and not that far to walk, so you can carry dolls in easily.

For longer trips, I'd do the whole padding and putting them in a big carry bag thing.

Oh. THANKS for asking about him! I'll bring him for sure! :D :D :D

    48. Tomorrow! Tomorrow!
      I love ya Tomorrow!
      You're always
      A day
      A way!
      :)

    49. Oh wow! It really is tomorrow :O I had my days mixed up and thought today was Thursday. Anyone want to carpool from LA?

    50. I am packed and ready to go!

    51. Wow, I can't believe it's going down tomorrow! So much to do still! I look forward to meeting everyone though. I'll be there with my daughter at my dealer table, so please say hi! Brucedabold, do you know if there is going to be Wi-Fi access?

    52. I'm getting ready for tomorrow! (although should probably be sleeping as I'll have to get up early) Question that just came to mind as I was selecting who'll be coming. Will the display table be against walls? I don't own any doll stands (and unless anyone is selling any) I think my boys will need to lean. Unless I want to hover with my arms out all day. XP

    53. OMigosh! IT's TODAY!!! hahahaa.. i'm currently preparing for last minute stuff for the con. I can hardly wait!

    54. It was really such a nice day!

Kudos to Bruce, Lise and his helpers for being so amazingly organized. Bruce you REALLY should consider doing a larger con, over several days, you clearly know what you are doing!

As a vendor this time out, it really could not have run smoother. We had everything needed and your scheduling/timing was impeccable. As any other vendor would say (and as Con veteran sellers ALWAYS say), the ratio of buyers to vendors wasn't quite right, but you know what; bottom line is no one knows what will sell at any given time anyway. I had a ball, and at least paid (with my sales) for my last big splurge of an Iplehouse suit for my EID guy, and for the nominal charge you made to vendors, this was a win/win for me!

LOVED the photo booth, KILLER idea, and I don't think anyone else (con wise) is doing that. Kudos to Ailene for the wonderful set-up, it was AMAZING!

And did I mention the incredible contingency of Soom Monthlies displayed here????? OMG, it was phenomenal. Thank you to all the owners of these beautiful art dolls, for bringing them and displaying them so wonderfully. It was a real treat to see so many of these exquisite limited editions dolls displayed in one place. I am still reeling from it (and kicking myself a few times for not ordering one or two of them, they ARE worth the wait.)

Lastly, thank ALL of you who appreciated my rendition of Paul Atreides from Dune, and honored him with first place in the costume contest. I can't begin to tell you what that meant to me. He was such a labor of love, and started out as such an ambitious idea. The version you saw, and voted on today was the third version, and I had almost scrapped the whole idea as being impossible (for me anyway). So, to get your popular vote, as the best costume, REALLY made me feel so happy and wonderful. There is no better honor than to have your artwork appreciated by your peers, and I thank you deeply for that today!

MUST give a special shout out to April's entry "the Fly", how clever was that????? WONDERFUL!!!

Thank you Joo Cholong for the lovely Dollheart outfit for the contest, I promise I will send a note to Pasu to thank hm as well.

Many thanks to one and all for attending, for bringing your beautiful dolls, and for sharing such fun and friendship, and thanks again to Bruce, for making it happen!

The theme was loads of fun, and you guys do the BEST backdrops for the contest. So many intricate little details make display, such a kick to play in. No doubt about it, you guys get the "play" element we all love so much!

    55. Gayle!
      Well said!
This was my first BJD Con and my daughter and I both had an AWESOME time!
I can't wait for next year! I willl be posting the pictures I took in the thread started by lydiawalker today!
Thank you again everyone! I met some really incredible people today. Let me tell you...it was nice being in a room of people that can understand my love for BJDs!

    56. What a great show! Bruce, so many thanks to you and your hardworking staff, it was awesomely run :) I enjoyed meeting so many new people, and I am looking forward to next year!
