San Diego BJD Con November 21-22, 2015 Discussion Thread

Jul 28, 2015

    1. Yeah! There were so many cool looking dolls, it definitely did not make the decision easy for voting!

    2. OMG! I bought so much stuff!!!

    3. Thank you everyone for a fantastic convention! I think everything went smoothly, and it looked like everyone was having fun. The panels were well attended and the vendors I spoke with were happy with the sales!

I really enjoyed the dinner, and although it was a bit hot out in the garden, the tea went smoothly. Next time perhaps we'll have iced coffee and ice tea instead of the hot variety!

We are already scheming about next year's theme: Steampunk! :dance :dance

    4. Dioramas for Steampunk could be so amazing!

Heh. I bought some great stuff, too.

I posted a brief Box Opening for my RIngdoll over in that forum. :D

    5. Steampunk will be fun! And remember everyone! Vote for circus next year!!

    6. Ha, ha, ha. Che you funny. This is the THIRD year that Opulent Orient has come in 2nd (by close votes) to the winner. I want an excuse for all those fancy/fun and extravagant Kimono's I've bought over the years. I think next year Susan is going to be much louder in promoting the Orient to people to get votes!

    7. Then year after next for Circus!

    8. A circus theme would give me an excuse to get a doll chateau hahaha

    9. Opulent Orient would be good. Circus, too! :)

You should just fix the votes... Who would know??? :wiggle

    10. Had sooo much fun. The 2 days went by so fast!

A BIG THANKS to Bruce & all the organizers who did such a great job! And also to all the vendors who brought fabulous stuff for me to buy and were so generous in donating some pretty amazing gifts for door prizes.

@april and @zekarmisama, great pictures! And I had lots of fun hanging out with you gals. I will try to load my pictures too, but here's one of Cody & Kei for now:

I have lots of stuff for Opulent Orient, but nothing for Steampunk, but I've got a year to come up with something! (will probably wait 'til the last minute as usual...) :whee:

    11. Renaissance Faire. Think of the props and sets for that!

    12. Renaissance would be fun! Then I could dress up Niccolo as Niccolo Machiavelli!

Has a Gothic theme been done yet? One set for Frankenstein scientists and one set for moody vampires.

    13. 2010 - the 2nd year we had a Mad Scientist lab for 'Amazon Women on The Moon' - a nod to all the 40/50/60's super silly/bad Sci-fi movies that were made. In the early forms of the con - we had tables with fabric and some decoration for the mass doll display and a separate set piece that was meant to take pictures in. San Diego's 2nd BJD Con! December 4th, 2010 Gallery April's pictures - post #17 shows the lab set. Bruce's post on the next page shows the lab from a distance and how it looks with no dolls.

We also did Gothic with 'Supernatural New Orleans' (2011) - where vampires, ghosts and other sorts were very much in evidence! :) Here's where the mondo sets started - as this year was much more elaborate!

    14. The 2011 theme was ‘Supernatural Orleans’, a tribute to vampires, zombies, voodoo, witches, and all things eerie and magical.

    15. I have NOTHING for Ren Faire and it's the least interesting to me clothingwise. But the sets would be cool for sure!

    16. I want to thank everyone, the Attendees, Vendors, and Volunteers, who attended the 7th Annual San Diego BJD con. You are fantastic! Without your wonderful support the fun would have never happened.
Our first 2-day convention went pretty smoothly all things considered. The display area rocked, the vendors did well, dinner was great, and the tintype photographer was busy the entire time on Sunday. The panels were all well attended and April had a box opening that drew quite the crowd! The Garden Tea was a bit hot and I think everyone would have preferred iced coffee and tea over hot, but we were so honored when Bo bought most of the Roaring 20s displays to be shipped to her store in Hawaii.
I think the hotel did a fantastic job of supporting the con, both with attention to the room as well as the dinner and tea. Or course, that was just my perspective, so if you saw things differently, please let me know.
Next year our theme will be Steampunk! :dance :dance For those unsure what the heck that is, you can read about it over at Wikipedia: Steampunk - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia and Steampunk fashion - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
And speaking of next year we will start planning soon, so if you have any constructive feedback, ideas, or comments please let me know. This is entirely a volunteer effort, and all money that comes in goes directly to the costs of holding the event (and we've never had a surplus).
Thank you again, and I hope to see you next year, and that you bring your friends as well!

    17. Nice haul, Chehime! So many cute dresses and tops for sale... I bought things Sat., but got distracted on Sunday--getting to take photos with the diorama, and having the Tin-type Photographer take old-time photos of my dolls.

The tin type photographer was so cool! He showed his process and was super-good in answering questions. His equipment (large-format glass-plate and silver plate camera with a lens that was 150 years old) and solutions were so cool to see! He had a little dark-room set-up (box with curtain) and trays of stuff... It was something I hadn't see before (I know about film photography, but not the tin types.)

Themes-- Supernatural New Orleans was fun! But more gothic themes could be fun, too. Of course, one could do a gothic take on Steampunk! Also Renaissance style Steampunk. Or Circus style Steampunk! :)

I've got clothes in those styles already... The one thing I don't often do is casual everyday dress! ;)

    18. Yeah! The tintypes were really cool!

Brainstorming steampunk ideas. I think I will definitely bring my girl since she doesn't get out often. Probably do her up with clock hands and a Gibson Girl hair do. I like hairstyling even though it seems like all I do is complain about it, lol.
