San Diego BJD Con November 21-22, 2015 Discussion Thread

Jul 28, 2015

    1. Hi April!

Sorry, the posting wasn't very clear... it left out a bit. Here's the new blurb:

      Note:
The Full Membership ticket purchase closes on Tuesday, November 17, 2015 at midnight PDT.
On the day of the con at the door we will have a "Dealer's Room Only" entrance price of $20 for the day, or $30 for both days for those who haven't gotten a membership, but it will NOT include the Saturday Dinner Buffet NOR the Sunday Tea, and you WON'T be able to enter the doll costume contest.

Also, I've fixed my DoA signature.

    2. Awesome, thanks for the info!

    3. I am getting very excited about this as well. I think the Saturday dinner & the Sunday tea will be great opportunities to meet and chat with people.

I will probably bring my MSD and YoSD boys again since they are easier to cart around. I don't have any 1920s theme clothing for any of my dolls, although I might be able to cobble up something for my MSD boy since he has lots of stuff.

I love the Roaring 20s theme and look forward to seeing some really great costumes!

    4. This is also my first event I'll be attending with my dolls! I just moved to SD and know no one around here. Yet! I'm excited to meet some new people :)

    5. Come see my table, Nancy Hay Decorative Arts. I'll have new felted hats, my new line of knitted shawls and scarves, plus some surprises!

    6. Thanks for the updated info, Bruce!

Oooh, the con is coming up fast! Really looking forward to it! :D

    7. I wanted to go so bad last year but I couldn't get up there >.< Hopefully this year I can! It sounds super fun!!! I only have one dolly but I'm sure we'll have a roaring good time ;)

    8. Glad that you can get to the con this year, @chocoyuridream. You don't even need to have a dolly, so one is more than enough!

I hope you will have a great time! :D

    9. Bo Bergemann is lovely. More vendors is great news! :)

    11. Just to be clear, if we buy a one day membership we won't be able to go to the dinner or tea? I just wasn't clear on that

    12. Crazily enough it looks like I'm going!!!!!! Ohmergawd! But I'm traveling light and will only bring one doll!! OMG!!! And i don't have a costume. And my camera is broken! And I have no money!!

    13. But you're still going to have tons of fun! Maybe stay away from the dealer's rooms if you don't have money cuz they're deadly. :XD:

@brucedabold, that schedule is really awesome! Can't wait!!

@chocoyuridream, according to the website: Information & Pricing - San Diego BJD Con

      Saturday Only Membership: $50
Includes Dealer's room and workshops on Saturday, Costume Contest Entry, Door Prize Gift Bag, Buffet Dinner, and complementary parking.

      Sunday Only Membership: $40
Includes Dealer's room and workshops on Sunday, Door Prize Gift Bag, Afternoon Tea, and complementary parking.

So if you buy a one-day membership (not the Dealer's Room Only entry), it does include either the dinner or tea.

    14. I'm going to see the panels for sure. Especially the building diorama one.

    15. Yep, the diorama one should be great! I'm always impressed by the ones that are built and wouldn't have an idea of where to start!

    16. If you buy the Saturday membership for $50 then you get the dinner and you can enter the doll costume contest and enter the drawing for door prizes. If you buy the Sunday membership for $40 you get the afternoon tea, entrance to door prizes, and the voice auction.

If you do the $30 Dealer's Room Only onsite then you get access to the dealer's room only both Saturday and Sunday, but no dinner, no costume contest entry, no door prize entry, no tea, no voice auction. Or you can do the $20 for one day of Dealer's Room Only.

In all cases you will receive free parking and a gift bag.

The memberships (Full, Saturday, or Sunday) must be bought BEFORE next Tuesday at midnight via the website San Diego BJD Con. They will NOT be available at the convention.

Dealer's Room Only are sold at the convention on the day of.

I hope that clears it up. :)

    17. So we are getting closer to the con!! I'm super excited and nervous at the same time.

Anyways... does anyone want to share a room with me? I got a room at the con price and would like a roommate for the weekend :)

    18. I'm very excited about the show. You always put on a great event.

    19. Thank you!!! I'm both excited and nervous! But I'm sure it will be a lot of fun! :dance :dance

    20. Hello~ my mom & I just bought our tickets! I'm so excited, this will be my very first doll con. Does anyone have any tips for making the most of it? I'd love to meet people but I'm pretty shy, I don't know, heh.
I only have two dolls as I'm still new to the hobby - a Bluefairy Tiny Fairy Emilie, and an Iplehouse JID Kyle c: I'll have them both with me hopefully.

    21. TheBodyVolcanic - How about wearing a button that says, "I'm a newbie. What's your best advice?" I bet that would get a conversation going. :-) Most everyone will be happy to tell you their opinion. You can also come say hi to me in my booth, Nancy Hay Decorative Arts.

brucedabold - How about having stickers like that available? Might be fun.

    22. That would be a fun conversation starter!

    23. I'm not sure if this is okay, and I'm sure someone will tell me if it isn't, but I wanted to share a picture I took of my girl, Rose, modeling a hat that I'll be bringing to the con at my booth, Nancy Hay Decorative Arts.

    24. It will be my first con too. I've been a lurker for such a long time and I finally have dolls of my own and am excited to go out with them.
(I'm also pretty new to SD so I don't know anyone here)

I think I'm going to bring the name sticker (the ones you can write things yourself?) and wear it around :) I will bring some extras if anyone wants them ^^

    25. Don't be afraid to ask questions about dolls and to tell people what you like about their dolls. Most everyone loves talking about dolls and are friendly. There are usually tables you can sit and relax at (not sure if there are some this time or not, but usually something like that), so don't be afraid to talk to your neighbors.

I'm pretty sure posting photos is fine. There used to be a rule that you could only post one photo per post unless it was a photo-thread, but I'm not sure that's still in effect or not!

I'm sort of an introvert myself, but I'll happily talk to anyone about dolls. :D

Also--There were be panels and lots of events going on, so there's lots to do. And you can always take photos. Taking photos of other people's dolls is usually OK. Some people ask permission, but usually their dolls are on display and the owners are away, and all kinds of people are taking photos, so permission usually isn't needed. Taking photos of dolls is kind of fun. (Something to do, anyway, and good to remind you of dolls and styles you like.)

    26. Hi newbie's! Should be lots to do - and look at! Bring a camera and pen/paper (or phone) to make notes and write down contact info or screen names of people.

Yes, there will be tables for sitting. More of them this time since we have a much bigger space.

We were working on centerpieces and the display this weekend, as well as gift bags. So much to get ready for next weekend.

    27. Cool! I would love to meet people who are also new, haha. Unfortunately I don't actually live in SD but about 6hrs north, near San Luis Obispo, but I'm still hoping to make friends and keep in contact online and stuff. Name stickers sound really good, I'd love to put down my DoA and Instagram usernames because I think more people would recognize me that way, lol.
If any of you recognize my dolls or username please approach me! I would love to get to know BJD people IRL as I've only met a couple.

*Edit* Here's a picture of my dolls, Dasha (Bluefairy Tiny Fairy Emilie) and Volka (JID Kyle in PG skin). Volka obviously has no eyes in this picture but I ordered him some temp eyes for the con that will be here on Tuesday, so he won't be spooky and eyeless while we are there, lol.

    28. Oh, I like that idea :whee: I'll probably do something like that.

    29. One day left to purchase full memberships to the San Diego BJD Con!
      San Diego BJD Con

    30. Both of your dolls are so cute! Hope you can find some good eyes for Volka. I'll be on the lookout for eyes at the con too.

I am bringing Cody (Luts Bory) and Keiji (Crobidoll E-line Lance):

That picture is from last year's con. I still haven't figured out what they will be wearing this time.

I will be wearing a badge with the DoA logo and my DoA name & avatar. If you see me wandering around (probably shopping like mad in the dealer's rooms :whee:), come on by and say "Hi" to Code & Kei, and me!

    31. Ah good idea! I think I will wear my DOA username too

AAAHHH I'm still not done prepping for the con.

My boys are working on their fingerwaves ahaha

    32. Your dollies are adorable too!! Hope I see you there. I'll have my DoA username also, is a good idea.

    33. I wish I could go, this is a drawback of living in WV...far away and no money :(

    34. Sorry, StephinWV. :( Maybe you can find some local meetups where you can hang out somewhere free, and maybe do some swapping of dolly items. That would be like a mini-convention! The San Diego BJD con started out small at first...

    35. Update heh, I received the eyes for my wolf boy :3nodding: also, the above comment reminded me, what's the etiquette on buying/selling/trading small second hand doll items at conventions? I have a couple of wigs and a pair of eyes I want to clear out of my drawers if I can, so I'm wondering if it's normal/acceptable to offer them for trade/sale while I'm there?

    36. That's a really good question @TheBodyVolcanic I was wondering that myself.

    37. Darn I forgot ticket sales ended so soon, I didn't know my work schedule!!! But amazingly I have both days free so I might go BOTH days! Does the dealer's room only price include parking and access to the panels at all? Or just dealer's room? I'll probably still go no matter what, I'm too excited! FINALLY get to meet other dolly peeps! My girl just got her new wig and new faceup all ready ;)

    38. I am on the fence to drive down there for a day. I mostly like contests and dealers. Is there really only 15 vendors? And prize offerings not until 730 pm and that only with the full membership. Huh.

    39. Well, I'm not bringing a doll but I have one to borrow!!

    40. The Dealer's Room only price includes the dealers, the panel discussions, a gift bag, and complementary parking. I hope you can make it!

    41. I'll be hanging out at the bar Friday night during the calm before the storm for anyone who wants to stop by and say hi. I'll bring Red along. :dance

    42. Around what time, Bruce? I'm going to try and get there on Friday night... but not sure when because of trying to avoid traffic...!

    43. I'm not sure at this point... hopefully no later than 8 pm. It really depends on how long it takes to get all the stuff loaded and brought down to the hotel.

    44. OK... sometime before 8, then... Makes sense since it's an early morning on Saturday!

I don't know if I can get down there before then. If I do, I'll see you! If not, then on Saturday!!! :D

    45. I am spending today going cram-sewing so no bar for me. hahaha

I talked myself out of sewing two tailcoats because I just realized one of my dolls hasn't got black dress shoes. ((and you can't wear white/brown oxfords with white tie.... darn Dollshe David's giant feet. I have more black shoes, just not ones for him...))

But I finally got the blasted fingerwaves done. >_> This is the most annoying hairstyle in the world but I love it.

    46. Yeah, those big-sized dress shoes aren't easy to find... I was looking last night and can't find the one pair I was pretty sure I had for SD boys... But did find some black shoes, at least!

    47. Bringing:
      Volks Cyndy 2
      Luts Delf Miyu
-- both wearing DollHeart 20s outfits (probably like a ton of others, but they are such great outfits!)
IOS Blood -- wearing DollHeart tux, because someone requested.
      ... some odds'n'ends 12 & 14mm eyes just in case
... flapper dress that I might wear to the banquet if I'm feeling up to it
      ... 2 small costume contest prize/gifts (I hope)
Ringdoll Norman fullset -- JUST arrived on my doorstep. I might do a BOX OPENING at the con!

Trying to throw stuff in car and see if I can avoid the worst of the traffic, but doubt I'll manage THAT...

    48. I MUST see your Miyus at the convention! I love that sculpt so much but I've never seen it in person so I'll probably find you lol :P
      See you all there!!!

    49. I'm going to try and set them up somewhere... don't want to by carrying 3 big dolls around... I'm hoping to find a good place-- either at a table or somewhere safe.

I'll have them there both days...

My Miyu is from way back around 2005-7, and is in pristine condition with default faceup. She used to belong to fantasy/fairy artist Nene Thomas who is an amazing friend, since she was gifted to me! She's pretty much a classic! My Volks Cyndy 2 is also an oldie-but-goodie with default faceup and also was gifted to me by Nene Thomas! They are "sisters" because of that.

    50. April, I'll bring Lex's...they're SD16 size, will that work?

    51. That was zekarmisama who was missing shoes. My SD13 guy has shoes, just not dress shoes... but that's OK with me. So don't worry on my account!

Thanks for the thought, though! :)

    52. Yeah they really aren't! I'm probably gonna go whole-hog and get some Freedom Teller shoes for Az later. They are more expensive than my shoes, but they also look better than my shoes! hahaha

I just switched around my plans so my Dollshe David is staying home but my SSDF/Pipos hybrid will come for the contest. I usually use the body for my Nabarro's boys Har, but his hair isn't done up as well as I would like.

Well, I feel like it's not hard to find people with Dollshe dolls anyway. Pipos Crow needs some love!

    53. Super excited to meet everyone :) I'll be getting there right around 1pm-ish. I'm bringing Raon (Daydream Ryan) and Shion (Volks Kasumi) Trying to figure out what to put on the boys!

    54. Hey everyone! I hope you all had a great time! I did and still need to catch up on some sleep and sort through stuff I bought and photos. :)

Thanks to everyone who was there for making the event more fun. And of course, thanks to all the organizers and volunteers and to all the vendors and the companies who donated gifts. There were some cute dolls given away, and lots of great items. And so many great costume contest entries-- so many who all deserved kudos for their amazing costumes!

Thanks for another great San Diego BJD Con. :D

Here are some photos... hopefully this link works and album is Public...! (tell me if anyone wants their face blurred or removed, but I'm only posting links here and tried to avoid people)

    55. You got a lot of great photos April! I ended up taking most of mine with my phone - and I totally forgot to get photos of the centerpieces after we put all the work into them!

    56. I had a lot of fun! I also feel a lot more confident in my sewing before. I haven't ever entered a contest with things I have sewn, much less win something! Having a lot of fun fussing with my new Clever Little.

I had a lot of fun and I'm excited to do it again next year!

Here's my pics on flickr 7th San Diego BJD Con 2015 >_> got some junky ones in the mix because I just tossed what was on my phone in there and my phone's auto-focus is kind of dumb too often.

    57. elf-ears -- I grabbed one of the centerpieces. They were all really nice. I should have tried to pick up another for the saxophone...
The one at our banquet table was particularly cool, I thought.

zekarmisama -- It was great hanging out with you and your handsome boys! You definitely deserved a prize. But there were a lot of wonderful costumes, I thought. 'Wish they all could win something. But I loved your guys a lot!

Nice to see your photos. Phone photos are nice these days. Easily as good as my little, old camera...
