Ringdoll Grown Dolls, thread #9

Jan 29, 2021

    1. Got my two beautiful boys in the mail yesterday, armored Zhao Yun and Zhou Yu :aheartbea I found them on ebay and couldn’t resist!!!
I’m considering making an unboxing thread for them but I didn’t take as many pictures as I usually do, I was too preoccupied with making sure everything arrived safely (had some broken/missing armor pieces and a ripped clothing item unfortunately). I’m still so pleased with them, Zhao Yun is in the tan skin color and Zhou Yu is in the normal skin color! They compliment each other so nicely :)

    2. Oh they're so beautiful! My old pair of jointed hands look clunky compared to these. How well do they pose?

      What a good find, they're stunning! :D

    3. I finished this outfit last night but the guy it was intended for (who's currently wearing it) isn't really feeling it. He's my Xmas present to me and I purchased him during the Black Friday event. He seems to want more vibrant colours so I'll need to make him something else. I'm still on the hunt for a name for him but I'm wildly pleased that I was able to get him since I'd loved him from the moment I saw him in his release back in 2019. More than likely one of my other guys is going to snatch up this outfit as both the style and colour is his jam. This outfit also reinforced why I hate sewing sheer fabric.

    4. That looks so pretty!

    5. I like the doll and the outfit.

    6. That's a stunning outfit! I feel you on sewing with sheer fabrics, the thought of it sends a shiver up my spine. Horrible stuff, even if it does look so pretty. Congrats on also getting someone you've wanted for a while too!

    7. Thanks guys!

@Quiet and Insane Gods, yes! Sheer fabric is pure torture to sew. But when I saw the bridal shawl (white sheer) in a clearance bin for like 70% off, I snapped it up because that beading is so pretty. That was easily 10 years ago. The rainbow sheer is around the same age and I'd purchased that for a different project that never happened because sheer is just so annoying/frustrating to work with. Even cutting it out with pinking shears didn't help all that much in the fray stoppage department (although they def did help control it).

I did break one of my personal rules in getting him in that I have no idea who he is and no doll comes home without a character already existing for said doll. But he was just too good of a deal/opportunity to pass up. I'd thought he'd need a soft/gentle name to go with the soft/gentle look he has. I think I'm wrong about that, lol. I think that gentleness is a lie (or maybe just a convenient facade for him). he might be far more complicated as a character than I thought he'd be.

My plan is to have him next to me as I go through my fabric bins and see what he likes and work from that. He seems to like red which is good as that would make him nearly the only doll I own that does and I have a fair bit of that colour. But I've also got some gorgeous vintage kimono material that I might finally get to use.

    8. @Quiet and Insane: They are the first pair of jointed hands I own so I have nothing to compare them to in terms of posability. They are able to make a fist and each finger poses very well. The thumb has a hard time posing and isn't as flexible.

@Iron_Dog That is such a beautiful outfit.

    10. He's gorgeous, @sashimi

My wallet is grateful that he's too tall for me. But at least I can enjoy him vicariously through other collectors.

    11. i was scared of the height but when i saw him i fell in love i'll definitely be taking lots of pictures of him!!

    12. I wish Ring Doll would have put disclaimers that the armor parts of Baldwin's outfit would discolor and stain him. I can already tell he is getting a long mark on the front of his neck and already has a very clear metal mark on the back of his head. The staining in his wrist joints is a given. But because these parts are not casted in a 'metal' color but sprayed and paint, it will leave marks on your doll. And it sucks when you spend about $1k on him.

Least Ring Doll could have done was lined the inside of the armor chest part in a thin white felt or something to keep it from rubbing on the resin. I am scared to take it off now and see what the damage is to the body. And if it can even be removed from the body or if its just a stain now.

Because of this I will never even chance putting his mask on him.

    13. whoa oh no. are you saying his crown is already causing stains? i also figured his hands would stain but its scary to hear his chest armor is staining...

    14. it's often happening with RD armor, when I received mine The Judge of Hell his those parts already was a bit sticky, idk why they not use usual resin for it. Also I know someone who had same fullset and that user put on a helmet on the doll and after few months it was glued to the wig + left stain on the head

    15. Not the crown, because it never touched the face due to the fabric, but the chest armor

    16. It's not sticky, the paint just rubs off

    17. Sorry for 3rd post in a row. I was able to rub the marks on the neck off with just my thumb. As for on the back of the head I got some off but not all of it. I think I will make him a thin white turtle neck for his neck.

I can't get my imgur link to work with DOAs image code so here is a link.

I changed my Baldwin's wig to Ashford's wig. I like it but he looks so young. I since changed it back to the set wig but I think I will go back to this dark grey. I wish Baldwin's set wig was more like Ashford's, not sure what it is about Baldwin's wig that makes me dislike it. It seems like it has to many fibers. Waiting for the weather to get better so I can take good pictures :pout:

    18. so reassuring to hear the stains came off so easily!! he looks so good with darker hair!
i agree about his wig... i personally hate the long white hairs. i'm so tempted to take them off >_<

    19. I couldn't get the metal stain off on the back of the head. But if he has long hair it can't be seen. I liked the long white hair, but I felt the quality of the top looked weird if you don't put the hood and crown on.

    20. It's a shame about the metallic paint getting sticky and rubbing off. I was going to order the Alpha body with the electroplating, but now I think I'd rather paint the robotic parts myself

    21. I love the look of the electroplating on Alpha but if it rubs off so easily, that's very disappointing. Not that I can afford Alpha right now anyway *sigh*.

    22. My friend bought him, she isn't a user on the forums but I will report anything she says about him.

It wont rub off with him because he isn't painted but electroplated.

    23. @RozenMaiden_Girl Do you know what the difference is between painting and electroplating? Asking because I'm not sure myself

    24. Electroplating is where a thin layer of metal (copper, silver, gold, chrome, rhodium, etc.) is bonded to an item via a special solution and electrical current. It should be fairly durable although constant use/contact can see the electroplating eventually wearing off (like if you have a gold-plated ring you always wear for example). Considering how careful we are in general with our dolls and that we're usually not constantly touching/rubbing them, the electroplating will likely last a very long time.

Because plastic (and resin is a type of plastic) isn't generally conductive, it needs to be coated with a material that will make it conductive enough for the electroplating to take. Generally, electroplating also makes the plastic stronger because of the coating but that also depends on the thickness of the coating.

    25. Yes! Its real and actual metal that is plated over an item. So while the parts are still resin, they will have layers of metal coated over them. The item is coated then put in a vat with an electrical current to make pond to the item and some other chemical processes. I would be shocked if electroplating came off at all unless you are trying to sand it off.

      Iron_Dog's explanation is really good.

    26. Fun fact! if you 3D print stuff, there are places where you can send them out to be electroplated if that's your jam.

There's a guy on YouTube who set up his own in-home electroplating station that he uses for cosplay stuff (I think it's cosplay?). Naturally, the name of the guy completely escapes me right now but he's probably easy enough to find if you want to go poke around for him.

    33. This is really good to know! Adding some thin white felt as a lining is a good idea.
I'm sorry your guy has been stained.
So the chest armor touches his chest directly? Or just around his neck?
I can't tell very well from the promo pics of him.
Have you ever tried plastic wrap (not on faceups of course)? I've wrapped resin parts in plastic wrap. I should probably check the dolls I've done this to, to make sure it's not doing any other kind of damage. It looks a little wonky if it shows under clothing but I prefer dealing with that to staining the resin!

    34. congrats! i love him so much, he's perfect :aheartbea you'll have to post photos of him when you get him!~
