Ringdoll Grown Dolls, thread #7

Sep 30, 2018

    1. Looks like polyfoam. I think the technical term for it is extruded polystyrene but different countries call it different things. Very commonly used for crafting~

    2. Ah @HenshinCyborg you're right! I hadn't noticed she was missing her leg armor, but no wonder something struck me as something off about her compared to the design sketch. Well, that's a bit disappointing. Like @GreenTeaSlug I really love when Ringdoll gets inventive with their armor, though I have yet to own any armored dolls by them. It's my secret hope that someday they release a fully armored knight type dude, though.

    3. I've been staring at Sigrdrifa a lot, but I'll have to pass on her. She just doesn't strike me as a must-buy. I'm thinking of moving a certain character to grown Hui so he is higher on my priority list.

    4. I can double moving a character over to grown Hui. I'm just trying to give myself excuses not to.
Sigrdrifa would be nice but not crazy about her plus my budget for giant female dolls is spent xD (one is enough) and to be honest If I were to get another incoming grown sized doll Hui would be first for sure. Wouldn't doubt me wanting Wangji, also Jiang Cheng (he is rumored but wouldn't make sense as the story is about the first two) but yeah I'm sure a buy me now sculpt will be around again what with the rate Ringdoll is pumping out fullsets.

      • x 2
    5. Hui's looks aren't known yet right? The previews look super nice but some designs were super awesome and I liked the sculpt less. So who knows? ;)

    6. Not yet but soon I am sure his finalized mic was teased today. I'm sure he might have sharper features cause it's more "mature" from his more rounder one.

    7. I was hoping for a "badass bitch" face but she looks so soft and gentle :mwahaha So it's a miss for me.

    8. @Kimmichi I'm not too sure how I feel about really tall girls in my collection yet so that is another reason for me to hold back! I am really looking forward to grown Hui and I think he could be a great fit for one of my guys.

@NatsuC I agree! I know it can be changed to some degree with a different face-up, but her general face isn't as amazing as I would like it to be. I'm also trying my best to not be swayed by every single doll that looks nice. :sweat I really like the red lining of her clothes and the black wig, but it's not enough for me.

    9. Oh gosh Sigrdrifa's so gorgeous! :D

    10. She’s been released, limited to 30 fullsets.
They added a black veil to her.

    11. Double post, might as well add another pic
      [IMG]

    12. She looks nice in all of the new pictures!

    13. Maybe adding the leg armor made the doll too expensive?
IMO I'm sure they are looking at past sale numbers of their more expensive dolls.

    14. My bff just got Sigrdrifa as her doll and now I'm trying to help her find clothing but I'm totally stumped as to where to start with a doll her size orz

Suggestions would be super helpful if any one has any!

(I'll admit I'm now glad my first ringdoll was a fullset male. So much simpler!)

    15. Nimbus got Day 22. I've seen some Sols I didn't recognize as Sols. He would also be one of those.

    16. Wow, you have quite a few Sols don’t you! 0-0

    17. New doll
      Lan Wangji

    18. :eek:Great... now I want Lan Wangji :horror:

    19. Wangji is beautiful! They got his poker face expression down pat! And his neck looks a lot more normal here vs Wei Wuxian’s production photos.

It's a given that I'm getting him since I'm a HUGE fan of the Mo Dao Zu Shi franchise. My poor wallet though T_T

    20. I'm seriously considering him right now. His sculpt is spot on and his costume details are so perfect!
      Did anyone ordered Wei Wuxian?

    21. I did! Of course I can't separate these two!

    22. Oh boy Ringdoll did it again....must hide everything electronic I must not order him :[
But Wei Ying will be lonely :atremblin how can I be so mean....:eusa_naug:sigh doll plans... must stick to the plans.
Where is grown up Hui :< need distractions from Wangji.

I also ordered Wei Wuxian o: I am almost done my layaway. If FFaD gets him this summer best bday gift ever :3

    23. "Wei Ying might be lonely with Wangji" is definitely a reason to splurge on Wangji. :(

Strangely enough though, the dealer who carries a lot of Chinese brands in my country tried to dissuade me from getting Wangji. She doesn't carry Ringdoll. When I asked why, she said nobody in China buys Ringdoll anymore, especially the more experienced collectors.

I don't know why though, and since English isn't her first language I might have misunderstood what she said about "the shape of RD is good but the doll model is not good" :ablink::ablink::ablink: I will admit to preferring Loongsoul's sculpts myself, but Ringdoll also has several dolls that I'm eyeing too... Including that sold out Er Yue Hong :(

    24. That's a very curious statement. I wonder what she meant by that? And I wonder what Chinese collectors think about this?

    25. I tried checking google after that, but my Chinese isn't really the best, so I only found one baidu ask that actually said anything negative about Ringdoll (and it had the OP saying something like "people on the web keep saying that Ringdoll's quality isn't up to scratch). The OP was asking people to corroborate if what he/she heard is true.

So I don't really know what's up. Unless I manage to unearth all those previous posts OP is referring to, I'd take everything with a grain of salt.

    26. Omg Lan Wangji is so beautiful!! Regretfully I have no money arm otherwise i would definitely have wanted them both. For those of you who are getting them please post many pictures!!! :)

As for negative comments... It's just opinions so anyone should buy what they like. So I wouldn't pay too much attention to that. ;)

    27. Maybe she meant that the sculpts are good but not the resin quality or body? I don't know anything about RD before Mdzs so maybe the existing owners could share their thoughts.

    28. I read/heard about issues in the past because they were a new company (along time ago) or couldn't meet demands so wait period was up to a year.

Maybe she meant compared to other famous BJD companies from China?

Regarding the quality I only have 2 Chinese doll to compare to. My Ringdoll came last night in the mail so please take this with a grain of salt: I did notice RD does have a different texture resin compared to Loongsoul but it's not thin or what I would consider bad. Wrist and ankel ball joints wasn't what I was expecting. Again, I haven't had RD long enough so I don't think my opinion count very much.

I do have to say I was disappointed in their attention to details for my order compared to other people RD orders. Not sure if they were rushing or not but 3 things went wrong for me: they forgot an I item I ordered, eyelashes came out when I try to put in the eye (easy fix but annoying first time unboxing) and last is the white cover in the box look like it was shushed in rather than cut to details. Of course that's just my observation and other than the missing item the other 2 isn't as bad, just lack shipping quality control?

    29. I did a bunch of reading up on RD's history and can corroborate @aireoko's point on slow orders in the past. They just couldnt keep up in the beginning and so there were instances of people waiting forever and logistics weren't great.

Back in the day there were also initial plans to release a doll based on a Japanese School Boy in the WW2 era. His backstory was him about to enlist to go to war(with China) and the backlash on Ringdoll was terrible.

The doll's release was scrapped due to overwhelming negative reactions from chinese netizens. Sino-Jap tensions will always be a thing after the war and justifiably so. As a result there was a boycott of the company by a good number of doll owners. Some sold their dolls, others actually ditched/burned them; it was not pretty. If I have to hazard a guess this might be why some distributors choose not to carry RD or why some owners have chosen not to support the company.

Source mostly read off the baidu boards 2 months ago when I was researching what doll to get.

    30. Thanks for the explanation. It makes sense. I can imagine that must have been hard on everyone. D: Doesn't make me love them less. Fav company for sure. <3

    31. @NatsuC thanks for the information. It was definitely very un-PC of Ringdoll to make plans to release a doll related to WW2 Japan, especially a schoolboy. Where else would Imperial Japan have drafted its soldiers from? So yeah, the political connotations aren't so good. My grandpa would still talk about how much he hated the Japanese well into his 80s, and he was already in another country when stuff like the Rape of Nanking happened.

WW2 was Showa era BTW. If I remember correctly, Meiji era was the Russo-Japanese war when Japan was just starting to flex its military might/imperialist muscles.

@aireoko I think Ringdoll uses environmental resin, while Loongsoul uses both regular and French resin? I haven't seen any actual dolls from either, since I'm new to the hobby. But production photos do make Ringdoll resin appear more "translucent" vs Loongsoul resin, which appears more "solid".

    32. @fionvarre I think you are right! I totally forgot that Ringdoll is using environmental resin. My Loongsoul is regular resin. I guess the matte is the "waxy" or candle feeling I read about.

    33. @fionvarre Yeap you're right. I had to backtrack to double check sources to make sure I got it right so I left it as a ? but I've since edited it and added that bit to reflect the note about the backstory. :thumbup

    34. I do find the thought of actually burning your dolls abhorrent though. Yeah, the company made a mistake, and a big one at that. But boycotting the company should be enough in this case. The dolls themselves didn't do anything wrong after all.

    35. I think Loong Soul is transitioning over to only offering environmental resin (which, Yay! all my LS dolls are environmental resin and it's pretty freaken amazing. I honestly don't get the histrionics over the "regular" resin no longer being an option, but different strokes for different folks, I guess)
That sidebar about LS aside, I have multiple dolls in environmental resin, from multiple companies, and it looks like RD's usual resin might be a touch more translucent than others (especially the tan?) based on owner/company pictures. My 2 dolls from RD are both gray, so it doesn't feel fair to make blanket assumptions about RD's usual resin based on them
My first thought was, wow that sounds really unhealthy! Burning plastics and resins release some really toxic fumes. I get being upset with a company and wanting to make a statement, but doing something that could potentially cause serious harm to anyone in your general area seems a but much, imo

      • x 1
    36. OMG yes now that you mention it, burning plastics isn't healthy at all. I used to work in a medical devices company, and we recommended that one-time use devices such as plastic tubings have to be incinerated in a proper incinerator. There's a proper procedure for plastic disposal. But then again, this is China we're talking about. I don't think air pollution and toxic fumes are a hot topic there (though it is for the rest of the world who are worried about the sheer amount of air pollution China produces each year).

    37. Wow I'm really fascinated you immediately think of progress health when burning dolls. I think it might have been a figure of speech no? I don't think resin burns very well so throwing in the trash or breaking would be more efficient to exert revenge? In any case... I don't really have anything to compare my RD boss with. I now have Granado and Dollbom as well and even though they're a different colour I don't really see the difference? How do you even judge that? :O

    38. Actually... When you've worked in healthcare for some time, you tend to become paranoid about certain things. As for the resin matching, some people just have a very good eye for color I suppose? But yeah, you'd need the real thing in front of you, and the same lighting conditions. Because photos are post-processed and vary by screen, they're not really good indicators of actual color.

      • x 2
    39. Well, I don't have anything else to compare to since I only own one doll, but my Ringdoll boy is only seven months old and already yellowed quite visibly. It might not be obvious immediately but the yellow undertone is definitely there. Not sure if this is a sign of bad quality or just the natural progression of the material.
Most of the time he didn't see any sunlight behind closed doors but I did take him outside a few times to take pictures in nature and didn't pay much attention if he got hit by the sun directly or not. I only left him there for maybe ten to fifteen minutes each time but it still may be my fault he's already starting to show signs of yellowing ...?
Anyway, the good thing is, I love the colour his skin has changed to! He was pretty pale in the beginning (normal skin) and has now changed into a still very light but more natural looking skin tone that looks much more alive than before. So... I don't really care?

    40. little bit of background on that - I'm from California, I live in San Francisco. We've had multiple really large, really destructive fires in NorCal the last 2 years (the pictures from those fires are unreal. It's so chilling to see the burn line where one of the massive fires was finally contained 300 yards from my in-laws' house. Some lots had burned so hot, even the bricks in the foundation melted) For a while, SF had the worst air quality in the world and it was hazardous to go outside without at least a particulate mask. The thought of burning plastic makes my lungs hurt
On to doll things. are you talking about color matching, or resin matching?

    41. Omg that's really terrible!! D:

But yes on to doll things. I always thought only the colour mattered but I've only been in the hobby a year. Should I pay attention to resin too? :O it's just hypothetical now. I don't know what my next doll will be tbh.

    42. short answer on whether you also need to consider resin type with hybrids is very much a yes.

opaque vs more translucent resins will age differently, and they will do so at different rates. They respond to ambient light differently, and they most certainly photograph differently. A head and body in different types of resin may look like a perfect match in person, but they'll photograph differently, and that perfect match probably won't last super long anyway because all resin changes color as it ages, no matter how you store it.

    47. I totally agree and I'm so glad I went with my instincts and got the one I wanted even though it was an expensive start to this hobby.
