Ringdoll Grown Dolls, thread #7

Ahhh! Congrats @LuckyXIII!

 

I ordered Wei Wuxian through the 11/11 promo! Was torn between wheat and normal skin, but eventually went with normal because it suits his Yiling Patriarch image better. Sadly, he is more expensive in the international store vs. their Taobao store. Ringdoll sales told me that the higher pricing was because of rights issues - seems they worked hard to get permission to sell this doll outside China.

Anyway, this boy will be my first BJD (though I'm not a newbie to BJDs per se, since I discovered Super Dollfies in the early 2000s). I am a huge fan of the original series and animated show, to the point that I am doing my own translation of the novel, so it was a foregone conclusion that I'd buy him and Lan Wangji as soon as they got official releases. I showed the photos of the two dolls on display at the collab cafe in Shanghai to a friend who collects BJDs, and she correctly identified that they might be Ringdoll based on the hands...

To the others here who've already bought him, we will be entitled discounts on his extra accessories (his sword Suibian and the jar of Emperor's Smile) once Ringdoll puts them up for sale.

 

I gotta come in here to ask, even though it was already asked and not answered. Is it just me or does Wei's head seem REALLY small? Or his neck is too big... something. Not the promo pictures, but screenshots on Insta of him through their live video have me concerned. These sorts of things usually don't bother me (and I usually don't notice). Maybe it's angle or something, but it seems extreme

 

@Littlebirdzoom I'm glad it's not just me! It does seem small or maybe since hair jawline is slender that the neck seem big? The promo video on Youtube didnt seem as small so maybe the angle?

 

@LuckyXIII Congrats! And yes, please post some pictures of Rinku if you want! Fingers crossed that he arrives safely at your place

 

In some of the promo pictures/video it still does look small, I just hadn't noticed until now because they were doing a good job at angling it. I think I'm going to nicely email them and ask if they made it a different size than it normally would be.

I also got that same feeling looking at some of the photos. It probably doesn't help though I am slightly paranoid about that sort of thing because I really dislike the look and it is one of the reasons I really wish it was standard in the industry to take one shot of the blank face on the blank body it is suppose to come with. In a lot of cases I don't think it is actually the head being too out of proportion to the body as much as the way doll necks tend to be elongated. Playing around in photoshop I've noticed that often simply shortening the neck a touch tends to eliminate the jarring effect.

 

@Krissim I think you are right about the neck being elongated.

I really hope it's just the angle and doesn't look weird in real life. I'll be sad if that is the case

I was just about to share those. Yeah, I think that's it. The neck size definitely doesn't fit, but that also confirms my feelings on "WHY is he on the buffest body they have" lol. That actually puts me off a little more than it should. I really don't want to have to go through the process of replacing the body, but I feel like I might not be able to look past it. Hm. Decisions decisions

 

So it wasn't just me. The first time I saw pictures I thought the neck seemed too large. Replacing the body seems way too expensive so I just hope it's not as bad in person.

Some of the shots he does look fine so my guess is it will be one of the cases where you really need to have the doll in your hands to see. Shortening the neck a hair would always be an option, although I know some people are loath to mod limited dolls . At least he is super popular so worst case reselling shouldn't be too hard.

Yeah I think he would have been suited for a slightly less buff body, although with the style of clothes his character would wear it isn't something you would notice minus the neck. On the plus side, I would think shortening the neck a bit would be a fairly simple mod as another option.

 

Shoot I already paid for him lol Guess I shouldn't have jumped on the panick boat too quickly to buy him. Worse case I can sell him (hopefully not).

 

Yeah, some of the pics don't look too bad. But I'm really hoping it's just the angle.

I guess worse case is I'll buy the smaller body and keep the big body for another RD head. I've always had my eyes on Dracula.

 

I didn't see that with the neck. XD I think he's pretty. But I'm out of budget for a while. So yeah. :P New dolls seem less attractive then. Which is probably self preservation hehe. XD

@SteamWitch that setting is so cool. So you have diorama's? :O

 

Yes, I have a diorama room, with the pub, the pub's office, Nox's bedroom, a home style dining room, a living room and a music den. It takes up two full walls, sitting on top of dressers and stuff. Oh, I forgot the vampire den under the pub.

 

Omg!!! That sounds like it's super cool! I've noticed the different backgrounds in your pictures before but I didn't realise you had so many! Do you have an overview photo? Super curious!

 

Surprisingly, I don't have an overview of the whole thing. I tried shooting a video but it was too long for Instagram and too big for Flickr. I have several albums on my Flickr with pub and diorama photos. I was planning to decorating each room for Christmas and then taking photos of each room. That is on my to-do list.

To those concerning about his head size, to my eyes his head is very small

Spoiler: Very personal (and probably biased) opinion.

Alright, since this is Mo Xuanyu's body(according to the outfit, double checked on MDZS's QQ mall, hope I didn't get it wrong lol) so I get the slender face and fingers, but the neck is kinda too long and thick..? (Is this body in the middle of being fed fat by LWJ? LOL)
Besides the probably-can-wear-YoSD-size-wig 21cm head, eyes are very small too, hmm Mo Xuanyu's body got big eye right...?
Facial expression doesn't look like Wifi(alright this part is not a problem by re-doing the face-up)
Suibian looks good though, it seems a big too big but Wifi was sitting down so it may be just angle problem. Chenqing is good, the outfit looks good too.
Tried to compare the photo of this Wifi with theme cafe's Wifi. The later one is more Wifi-like.

 

@tiyama thank you foe the pictures! His head does look small but I'm hoping it's just an angle thing. I wonder if it's just how grown head sit on the grown body in general and we only noticed it because of the hair style?

I have noticed the elongated neck/small head appearance on Ringdolls before. Stylistically I feel like some of the companies like this look for some of their male dolls. For instance when picking out my recent doll from Loongsoul, which has similar style I also got that vibe from some of their male sculpts.

I would say in this case there are a mixture of things that might be adding to the illusion. For instance, dark clothes completely covering his shoulders accept for a slit under his neck that creates a downward arrow into his chest. It guides the eye down and makes the neck even more elongated looking. The hairstyle on one hand is full, which normally would help, but it is also dark contrasting with his skin and the long pieces at the sides make it so the face shape flows straight into the neck.

 

At side angles, the head looks fine. I can't wait!!

I agree, there is clearly a difference between the theme cafe WiFi and this one, which I assume they changed the sculpt a little.

I'm not a fan of the wig. That is one thing I'll probably change if I can find one that looks more appropriate for him.

 

Personally I had an issue with how babyfaced he looks. But in the weibo livestream when they unveiled this doll in detail Huangshan said he made the face like this so the doll could have more versatility transitioning from regular wei wuxian to demonic Yiling laozu. So I doubt Mo xuanyu is in the equation at all.

Body-wise I have no idea why he's so bulky either. Maybe an attempt to keep it canon that wwx would have been a top in his lifetime in his own body?

And @tiyama those pictures are really nice. Honestly I'm not bothered by the head size at all. I think it's a very nice style. XD but I guess that's opinions for you. It's so cool they made these character dolls. No funds though haha. XD

 

I don't know much about the character (hoping to change that when I get some time! Life has been too hectic for reading lately TT^TT) but I've noticed Ringdoll has pretty much started defaulting to the RGM-03 body for their male grown dolls. I'm pretty sure Wei Wuxian is on that body, which might explain why the head looks so small. I do think with his head the size/shape it is, it might look better on the more slender RGM-04.

 

I think so too~ Might just be a design choice at this point. Which brought me to my most PANICKED!state because I ordered my other doll(default 03 bod) with an 04 body and then realized the neck circumferences were drastically different. X'D I've since been reassured by plenty of lovely current owners that RD grown heads for bodies 1 through 4 are generally alright so yay~

The only complaint with the #04 is the feet, apparently they let that part go what a weird way to slip up.

 

I'm so envious you have the space to have multiple dioramas fully set up all the time (although I would hate having to dust them!) Life Goals, right there

 

Yeah, I think their listed measurements for the 03 neck are wrong, though it is thicker at the base than the 04. I'm not really a huge fan of the 03 because I'm not keen on the super muscly look (and I feel it doesn't suit a lot of the guys Ringdoll has been putting on it). Ashford also came default on the 03 body but I got him on the 04. Honestly, my favorite of the bodies is the 02, but Ringdoll hasn't been putting any dolls on it or the 01 recently so I figure it's only a matter of time before they're discontinued. Shame. =/

 

Re: the point that it doesn't really suit a lot of heads they've been putting out. Agreed. Not that they don't have more mature/chiselled sculpts to match the 03, but having it on the softer/babier faces is odd.

The taobao customer service is great though, I asked if they'd pop on a Raven head on an 04 body for me to take a look and they said they would when they drop by the studio at a later date. Very helpful, considering they don't have a lot of comparison photos on the official site. Would have been so lost if not for this forum.

 

I love the Rgm03 body. So I don't mind. XD I think the body itself is nicer than the 4. But you're right that some heads would fit much better on the smaller body. I am not sure heads are exchangeable though. The neck circumference is different so you can't put a head that's already made for Rgm03 on RGM04. I asked. XD

 

Hello everyone, it's been a long time since I was around. I just wanted to pop in and share a quick pic of my boy who FINALLY has a look and a faceup that reminds me just how utterly and compeltely in love with Ringdoll dolls I am. Jinx feels alive to me now and I adore him more than ever.

Thank you so much! I thought so too. He's a pretty old Ringdoll Kay. He's yellowed a fair bit but it's mellowed into such a lovely colour, I really love him.

Your Rinku is so handsome! I'm gutted I couldn't get him I was in love with that guy but I shall stare at yours and be in love from a far.

 

I actually have both bodies and a head that’s meant for rgm03 and one that’s for rgm04 so I can check. XD But you order it together with the body, right? Then it’s definitely no problem.

@LuckyXIII congratulations on your rinku, the fullset looks really good even in real non promo shots, I love the choice of eyes, makes him look like a wolf! The wolf ears are very very very impressive!!!!

Im very excited hoping we get some more info about the Vampire Hunter D X RingDoll, I havent watched or read the series, but that chin on the teaser photo, I love the face shape. Ringdoll does amazing intense faces so no doubt he will be really cool and interesting too

Yeap I did! Figured if I'm iffy about the final product I can always commission a mod but I trust it'll turn out alright like everyone says. Actually confirmed the order with RD yesterday and they've processed payment so the wait begins! Officially!

What are your views on the kneecaps of both RGM 03 and 04 bodies? Just out of curiosity~

Ooh a tightlining for the eye! What concept are you planning for him next?

 

@NatsuC Ash and Evz are twin Sols. They both had modified default faceups but Ash's got scratched so I gave him a new faceup. I like it so well I am going to redo Evz but I'll need to wait until warm and dry weather to come again. Tan skin, sealants and bad weather are unforgiving.

It doesn't look dissonant at this stage either. There's a really nice pop of personality when twins are 80-90% similar. E.g. Evz looks sultry and Ash looks poised but they're both wearing fundamentally the same makeup.

 

Oh that's good then. There won't be a problem for sure. I didn't check out the difference between the knee caps yet. I'll have a look and post pictures if you want?
I have a girl from Dollbom who doesn't have knee caps but I like Ringdoll's version with kneecaps better is all I can say. :P

 

That is kind of funny/cool because that totally describes their personalities. I may leave Evz alone then (or until he messes up his face) thanks for the insight.

@SteamWitch Ash looks good with his new faceup! I love him and I really like the difference between him and Evz and yet it's so clear they are twins at the same time. They are both gorgeous, nice work on the faceup!
