New So at this point I have pretty much decided that I probably need to get this doll. And now I'm stuck in the "soooo is it even possible to order the configuration I would like to have..." Currently searching the internet for any hint of the angles I am looking for to make a decision about the 07 body. It is surprisingly hard to find anything showing this side angle (beware the doll nudity before clicking link at work https://ueeshop.ly200-cdn.com/u_fil...bb4cae66d.jpg?x-oss-process=image/format,webp) without the arms blocking just how slim he is in relation to the very buff chest. And that is sort of a make or break the deal for me what the sideview of the body looks like (yeah that's right 07 body, your magnificently sculpted abs are not distracting me enough to forget about waist size vs chest size proportion preferences ). So I've been checking out 06 body again and studied the features just as carefully and made a pros and cons list for both bodies (that came out wrong)... Also, at this point I am at the stage of "sooo... Could I by any chance pick and choose from both bodies please? Because I probably want that chest and waistline combined with the other body's butt and legs" Also, also... sort of concerned about the available options if ordering. Apparently the 06 body and 07 75 cm body is available in two neck sizes and of course I want the one not listed on the dolls sales page... Also, also, also the 07 body is apparently available in a 70 cm version which depending on the outcome of waist vs chest proportions would probably solve the other thing on the "to investigate list" which is "hmmm I'm not sure yet if your head looks a little small compared to your shoulders and neck on the default 75 cm body or not" With that being said... decisions decisions... Wonder if Ringdoll might be able to help with a sideview photo with no arms blocking if I ask nicely…
New Would some of the views here help? I believe the 50cm is a scaled-down version of the 07. I'd recommend not getting the small neck option. That's what's on my 70cm guy and it looks too skinny for the width of his shoulders.
New Thank you, it does very much look like a smaller version of the same body and there are more angles I have also been looking through all the fullset photos also since Ringdoll lists which body is used for each doll on the website. And I found one or two box openings that gave some answers on the “what do I think of the neck size”. So, I have found a little more information now and I am honestly not so sure what to think. As much as I love full set photos I wish there had been more blank doll photos for the different sculpts. I did do a comparison of measurements with the 07 (70 cm version) body since I have the 02 body and 03 body, and I have EID guys. And the 02 body is skinny but still have the rather broad shoulders and looks like he’s been to the gym (not to the degree as the newer bodies of course). And the 07 body has a waist that’s almost 3 cm smaller than old skinny 02 but the chest on the other hand is 6,5 cm larger than on 02 (actually larger than on an EID man). So that’s a huge difference and that does concern me a bit (not my intention to come across as if I am bashing the body sculpt, the bodies are beautifully sculpted and this is merely a comment on personal aesthetic preferences). I just don’t know. I wrote and asked about which options that are realistically available and maybe things will clear themselves out when I get a reply .
New IMGP2115 by TFAsiduri, on Flickr IMGP2114 by TFAsiduri, on Flickr Left to right: RGM-06 (78cm), RGM-07 (75cm with 13.2cm neck), RGM-07 (70cm with 11cm neck), RGM-04 (68cm).
New Thank you so, so much for taking the time to take the photos! : You have just helped me make all the concerns go away I can also see why the 11 cm neck would be a little bit on the skinny side. Now I shall proceed to make my bank account weep and then after the order is placed, I imagine I will not be able to stop myself from prattle quite a lot about it. There are so many ideas and plans and this is going to be awesome !
New Yay! Order placed, looking forward to seeing him in real life around next week sometime... (just joking, done this before and I know there is a more or less significant wait time involved). So one blank doll in white skin, 07 body (75 cm) and the ram skull mask. He will be loosely based on a cartoon character of mine. Though the doll will be the considerably more conventionally attractive and handsome alternative version of the character There will be a lot of extreme metal aesthetics going on here since really, this is one of the personal interest topics I have not yet been using too much of for my BJD:s (mayhap a few influences here and there *glances at avatar*). I think I might actually already have a pair of pants that will fit him (hooray!). Will need a band shirt... Specific band shirt (here we go, making life difficult again). And while waiting I suppose I should get working on finding that neat very long black hair for him. Wonder if 8-9 wigs would be appropriate since the head apparently is a 21 cm head... Hmmm... And eyes... I might have eyes provided the info about 14 mm eyes is accurate This is going to be so much fun
New Wanted to share what I call my Horus (Anubis) since I already had an Anubis from Soom. So he became Horus. Just love him.
New @JAS101 congrats on making your bank account weep! One interesting side effect from this, I always thought Sun Ce (on the left) was on a 75cm body, and couldn't figure out why he was so much taller than Zhang Jiao on the 75 body. I finally got around to measuring him. Now I need to do a bunch of faceups. @Bren, he is stunning! And he does look like Horus,
New Wouldn’t have been nearly as easy to make the bank account weep if I hadn’t gotten such great help to figure out which direction to go with the doll Then I would probably still be sitting here trying to figure it out by box opening screencaps and creative use of Photoshop I got a wig and eyes which I hope will fit, and shoes, for him today. I do already have underpants and expect he may be able to lend a sweater and a pair of pants from the 72 cm guys if it turns out the jeans I think will fit end up not actually fitting. Going to be interesting to see if the doll, or the accessories arrive first. Oh and… One day of waiting is already done… Time flies, he will be here any moment now (if by any moment we mean “next 120-180 days or so”) That’s cool! I also thought the 06 and 07 bodies were both 75 cm so when I saw your reference photo I was surprised to see the difference. I imagine it must have been quite a bit of a surprise when you put both the dolls you expected to be 7 cm next to each other only to find Sun Ce was actually rather a lot taller . Very nice, what style of face-ups do you have in mind for them if I may ask? And do they have a preference in clothing styles also?
New I was sure I ordered a 75cm body for Sun Ce, so maybe it was a mistake on Alice's part. Not that I mind, it's a nice body either way. I like Sun Ce's cute friendly expression in his fullset photos, so I might try for something like that.
New The interesting thing is that when I check Ringdoll's site it very clearly states that the 07 body is a 75 cm body (also available as 70 cm as we already know). But from what i can see it doesn't say anything about that for the 06 body (though considering the measurements it is logical to assume 75 cm). However, the measurements without the head for both bodies only have a 1 cm difference. So, I am very curious where the extra 2 cm came from on your doll That is a very nice face-up and it suits his face very well I am sure he will be absolutely beautiful when you are done with the face-up. Sorry if I am coming across as interrogating you but will you keep a similar clothing style to the full set or something different? My Zhang Jiao has already begun to be referred to by character name... this is a good sign. He shall be named Gunnar (for context - the name is commonly associated with elderly men these days even if some still use the name for their children, it’s probably not what people might at first glance expect for the black metal dude and I think that make it work even better ). Have found shoes for him now... though said shoes are located on Taobao so I shall need to figure out how to solve this.
New Small edit to previous discussion about the 06 body... The total measurement is listed as 78 cm when I look at the page for buying Zhang Jiao, but the total is not listed as clearly on the product page for just the body. Just noticed it as I was taking some notes for future reference
New Thanks for investigating the 75 vs 78 mystery. Looking at Alice's site, where I got Sun Ce, I see they do have two separate listings for him, the older red fullset at 75cm and the new brown one at 78cm. I got a blank doll, so who knows. I like Sun Ce's original red fullset, so maybe I'll do something inspired by that. Or maybe armor, since he's so big and imposing. As you can tell, my plans are virtually nonexistent. I love the name Gunnar! Can't wait to see what you do with him! (Also shoes... argh...)
New I can only agree that it’s more than a little confusing if there are two different listings for Sun Ce. The important thing though is that you are happy with him even if he is a little taller than expected Maybe the body was shorter on the older version? I do know for a fact that the 02 body changed during the years. Not in any huge ways but like I mentioned in a previous post the oldest of my dolls on the 02 body had the man-bits sculpted on while the ones on the same body that were ordered later have those attached with an elastic. So maybe the 6 body was originally 75 cm tall but got adjusted to be 78 cm tall for later releases ? I did take another look at the red fullset and it does look very nice and impressive! Armor is also nice. Plans are way overrated just thinking out loud now but maybe he wears the armor for some occasions and the other outfit when chilling? Or maybe the two can be combined somehow? The possibilities are endless . Thank you! Gunnar is going to provide so many opportunities for crafting items for his wardrobe . Yes… shoes…. ARGH! Indeed … I had a significantly high level of dramatic “ARGH! The shoes!” over here a few weeks ago when I realized a lot of my doll shoes had not aged well and had decided to literally fall apart sometimes during the last few years…. Anyways. The Taobao shoes were out of stock… so socks it is for now… Yes… I can only agree. I think shoes is one of the things that have caused the most doll-related headaches over the years . Either they don’t fit, or they would fit and are out of stock. Always. Somehow only the shoes not suitable for the particular doll will be available to order. And once you have found the right pair of shoes they automatically self destruct in a few years time making the whole process begin again . To sum it up: Argh !
New Most of my guys end up barefoot a large part of the time because of the shoe issue. A good portion of my collection requires shoes of an ancient Asian style. Another part of my collection requires a style that may only exist in my head since they're a species I created and their clothes/shoes reflect that they're for a created species. A very small part of my collection wears modern shoes and they're the easiest. Then there's the boys who are impossibly tiny (Granado 15Lucent). Some of my guys cannot wear shoes because they don't have human feet (or feet at all), which is a relief really. Fortunately it doesn't bother me too much to not have shoes for them but every now and again it is annoying to not be able to find something for a particular character if I want to take pictures of them fully dressed. I have made very, very simple shoes/sandals but nothing to really be wowed over.
New @Iron_Dog you may be onto something. Replace all their feet with paws, then we don't have to worry about shoes.
New @Alewife Lol. I lean strongly to fantasy types so I have a fair number of dolls that have not-human feet. Or are Nagas. Or mers. Or taurs. I'd love to get an Alpha (but the Ashford head instead) but he's taller than I want *sigh*. I'm not a fan of the move towards bigger and bigger boys. That's just too much doll for me. The 50cm Baldwin (special head) was wickedly hard for me to not hit the buy button.
New I'd be happy if they'd shrink the boys back down to 65-70 or so. But all the prettiest heads seem to come on big bodies.
New I agree on the size reduction. A friend of mine bought a head (OT for this thread) and took a gamble that it would work with a "shorter" body. It did not and likely required at least a 72cm but probably 75cm. She had to sell it on as she doesn't collect dolls that large. I'd like to see more 60/62cm mature boys come out (in general) but they seem to really be a thing of the past *sigh*. I get that the companies make what the market demands but it's a little disappointing when that doesn't align with what you want. Mind you, my wallet is grateful as this means I don't buy new dolls. But that's what the 2nd hand market is for, right?
New It would be amazing if the dolls were available in more than one size. I love the larger dolls but many times it would be nice if the same sculps were available in a smaller size also. I don't know if Ringdoll still sculpts the dolls by hand or if they use 3D software these days. Let's hope that one day there is enough of a demand for several sizes of mature dolls so that there are more options.
New I've had to pass on some beautiful heads because they looked like they'd be big even on a 75 body. I hope the artists hear our plea!
New I 100% stand by my words that if RD made Alpha in a 50cm version, I'd be throwing my money at them. I've no idea where he'd fit in, but I'd figure it out later, lol.
New @Alewife I feel that statement in my bones. I started in this hobby with MSD and I thought that I'd never have tinies (not mature enough) or SD (too big). Yeah, about that... The majority of my collection is now SD and the mature tinies out number the MSD. Then again, I said I was only going to have 4 dolls (all MSD) at the beginning and we all know how those declarations work out. I'm currently at 91 full dolls from 50 companies. 50 are SD, 14 are MSD and 27 are tinies.
New He's amazing! Of course if you got him, you'd have to get the rest of the horsemen, or he'd be lonely. @Iron_Dog I'm afraid to count. I think I followed the same trajectory as you, I was only going to have 3 or 4 BJDs.
New @Alewife I do like what Ringdoll has done with the horsemen dolls though for the most part, while being amazing, gorgeous and wonderful they are not quite right for me (though they are thoroughly impressive in their creativity and I like that Ringdoll has never shied away from the less pleasant things like injuries and such for their sculpts). It's the facial aesthetics that I find interesting for the War sculpt (I think it's because there is something about his face that reminds me of the doll sculpts that first drew me to Ringdoll very many years ago). But to be tempted for real I would need the doll as a basic doll with a regular "no injures" facial sculpt. Fortunately for my wallet full sets are also not my thing (though to this day I would gladly make an exception for the full set Air Force Wolf ). I think full sets are amazing, like viewing a gorgeous piece of art where you can admire and study them, try to figure out how the artist did it and be impressed about their creativity . But for my BJDs I prefer them to be like a blank canvas to see what may happen with the same sculpt if being creative in a different way @Iron_Dog I can also only agree... The plan was maybe 2-3 dolls back in 2012 when I got my first doll. Then things happened and they multiplied…. A lot. The last 2-3 years I thought I was more or less done with the hobby and would downsize to 3-4 of the favorite dolls. And while going through all the stuff in February this year it all suddenly became a lot of fun again
New @JAS101 To be fair, it has taken me 18 years to amass the horde I have. There was a LOT of begatting involved, too, as well as the fact that I cannot have unpaired dolls in-house (they're all characters from the novels I write and since I write m/m romance....). So my first doll was Moswen (AoD Chi & still my favourite) and he needed the love of his life, Kijika (LE Doll/AoD collab Adonis). I had thought Kijika was going to be the AoD Min head that I got with Moswen (yea free head event!), but he was all nope. So the hunt began for Kijika's sculpt and now I had this extra head. But the minute I stopped trying to force Kijika into that sculpt, their son, Jaiseki, promptly stepped forward and said this is me. Cool. Now I needed to find his husband, Sarojin (Illusion Spirit ZhuQing). While looking for him, I spotted Quinlin (Jei Doll Ashford) so naturally I needed to find his forever love, Ryzel (Blue Blood Doll Valentine). And on and on and on we go. There was also the winning of Khale (Leeke LE Khal 2011 Anniversary Bloody Night fullset) at Doll North one year which spawned the majority of the SD's I own and he needed his husbands, Fei-Lau (DZ Edward) & Sleet (Soom Auber Storm Sprite). I love the aesthetic of the fullsets but since all my guys are characters in my various Worlds, a fullset isn't going to stay that way for me and I'd be changing them to be whatever the character I have in mind is, which defeats the purpose of a fullset to me. Especially if they're a specific character, like when RD has done the characters from Heaven Official's Blessing (which I love). I am drawn to the unusual/weird/odd and I really appreciate the things that RD has done with sculpts like Baldwin (for the leprosy head) and Alpha (mecha body with electroplating). It strongly appeals to me to have a sculpt that isn't perfect or what many see as not pretty. Whoever does the face-ups is extremely talented because they're beautifully done and I wish that you could get a face-up by RD without having to get the fullset but I also understand it would likely slow down their production a lot if they offered that.
New @Iron_Dog I can understand that. I’ve been in the hobby since 2011 so there have been a few years over here to for the collection to multiply. Cool, then we have a similar approach to the dolls (mine are also based on characters from my writing/comics). I completely get that. If you base them on your writing, and they are paired with someone – then it makes perfect sense that you would eventually end up with quite a few dolls. And I think that is lovely. What you are describing is so relatable and I don’t know how you feel about it. But somehow, I personally think that is part of the fun in the hobby to discover different dolls and see who works for which character. I love how you describe the process and how one doll led to another and all the twists and turn to find the right sculpts for all of them When I got David (the doll in my profile picture) my collection began to expand. In my case it has often been that a sculp is released and I go “that doll looks like X character”. I mean I knew pretty well who the main characters would be, but as long as there wasn’t a matching sculpt nothing happened. But here we are 13 years later with his partner, some family and friends. And then there is of course the “oh wow… this doll is so cool!” thing going on my end to. Exactly! I think changing a fullset sort of defeats the point of getting it in the first place. I’m not saying it’s wrong if someone does that, but I also think it’s a good thing when the option for “basic doll” exists. And even “basic doll but I would very much like to also have the mechanical arm fro mFull set x and the skull mask from full set y please” I agree with you and I am much the same way. I can appreciate traditionally pretty looks, but what draws me to Ringdoll is that they do these cool and different things (I would argue that my favorite sculpt, Wolf, for example is not a traditional “pretty boy” sculpt if you look beyond the face-up. I’m not saying the sculpt isn’t handsome, but it is different). And honestly that is often what draws me to a sculpt that they have a lot of character. I really like the special version head for the Famine sculpt and what Ringdoll has done with the Baldwin and War sculpts. The special versions have this interesting mix of pretty and “oh no that looks like it hurt…. A lot ” going on . I hope this doesn’t sound strange, but I view things like injuries and “perceived imperfections” as very personal things where no two are alike. So, I think that is why I prefer starting with the uninjured facial sculpts. Since to me, I think the concept are amazing for the horsemen dolls. But in the case of War this scarring and injury is very specific looking, and on my end, I attach that look to this specific character. So, I could very well want to add an injury or a visible illness to a doll that is represented that was in the promo photos, but I would prefer to start from a basic head and take it in a different direction if that makes sense. Yes, the person or persons who does he face-ups are incredibly talented. I can also understand why it may take too long to accept the faceup orders but it would have been amazing if it had been possible
New @JAS101 I've purchased some pre-loved dolls that came with "imperfections" or were modded in such a way as to be very unusual. Rhyia is a Soom Euclase (1st release) that had some dodgy seam sanding done in a previous owner's care. That turned into scars suffered during a war that led to him suffering from battle fatigue. Macien (Spirit Doll LE Dark) had extensive subtractive & additive mods done to his head that are functionally impossible to revert but part of his backstory involves him having a major accident at a god's forge as an explanation for what he looks like now. Braithwin (Soom Chrom/FL body) was dyed by a previous owner to have vitiligo. I'd say the majority of my guys have custom face-ups but I do have some with either company default and a few with fullset face-ups. I was fortunate enough to be able to buy Shaytien (Ksitigarbara-The Virgo) directly from RD with the default fullset face-up (but not as a fullset) as part of a sale they did. That was a total win in my books as I got a beautiful doll with a gorgeous face up for like 50% off. Those in-stock sales they put up randomly make my wallet hate RD something fierce, lol. Funny enough, Shaytien's partner is on an RD body that I got on sale for like 70% off (the head is an ancient DZ Caesar).
New Years ago, Ringdolls were my first discovered BJDs. Chai intrigued me back then. I've been following RD ever since. It's so interesting to see what you can come up with with BJDs. I have an RD body at home and it's amazing - both in terms of movement and aesthetics.
