Ringdoll Grown Dolls, thread #10

Mar 12, 2025

    1. @xatshe and @Iron_Dog I am so sorry that happened.:atremblin

How is everyone feeling about their doll(s) being made and the wait?

I am so excited and I keep calming myself by looking at their pics everyday and watching box openings.:abambi: Thank you all for this chatroom! It is so stressful to wait for your dolly without having others to talk who are having the same experience. I know when I got my first bjd the wait was the hardest because it was my first time having that experience. Thankfully, DOA chatrooms helped so much at that time too!:cheer

    2. I'm waiting for my 1/4 Anubis that I ordered in the beginning of February. I hope he ships soon! I got the full-set minus the arm/knee guards and the staff which cost extra (I can make something similar for my doll myself). I'd love to order a Frankenstein, but I really hate waiting for new dolls.

    3. This news about defects in the Alpha bodies is making me a bit nervous for when mine shows up...guess I'd better film the box opening when it does

    4. Speaking of the Egyptian themed dolls, my Bast is whole once again and I regret absolutely nothing. I do need to glue in his piercings at some point but that's a problem for future me.

I thought I wasn't going to keep him in his fullset wig or eyes but he actually looks really good in them, he may get to stay like that for a while. Especially since I got used to my smaller SDs and wrangling this man is a two handed job.

    5. Ohhh he's lovely @Nasa !

    6. @Nasa your Bast looks super cuteee, the details of the fullset are amazing :D In what resin color is him? I want to chek if the Ringdoll tan colors match the "Soom Light Tan" for afloating head that will be shipped at the end of this month.

Owner pictures always show how great the Ringdoll fullsets look like in real time. now I want one of their Egyptian themed dolls, maybe Anubis! His face is so divine~ and it would be cool to have that new 1/4 size :XD:

    7. Thank you! He's very charming. As far as I know, he's just Ringdoll's default "tanning" color. Unfortunately, the only Soom tans I have are several years old at this point, and I believe they were "tawny" rather then light tan, so I don't have an in-person comparison for you. It IS fairly light, as tans go, so you might be able to fudge any difference with the faceup?

    8. @Nasa thank you for the information. So their "tan" is pretty light. At the moment they also have "Light Tan" but it looks suuuper light, lile an opaque normal skin that looks light tan when the lights and shadows hit right, but I don't have owner pictures for reference. My head would be an artist's head, so the "soom light tan" would be the in this "light tan" that is more constant as a commercial palette and not Soom's own that is inconsistent.

The last RDbody that came out is so pretty that I like it for the head, but if not I'll have to buy an artist body that also sells it in "soom light tan", or one of those companies that make matches.

    9. [IMG]
My Saladin arrived yesterday. He is also in tan resin. He is a beautiful doll but I was sent the wrong mask.

    11. I am tempted to buy one of the boys Ringdoll will discontinue soon.
I have been in contact with acbjd for it and asked them about the skin colors.
They have listed Elzevir with the options normal, normal yellow and white.
I asked them about the normal yellow, because I am not aware that color even exists anymore. But yes, they said it's a color in itself and it's not meaning the milk color too.

So now I am confused, does someone know about Ringdolls current normal yellow?

    12. Ringdoll may have old back stock. I was able to purchase a never used, discontinued head with no yellowing that was cast in 2018.

    13. I believe Ringdoll also started offering a more yellow normal to be close to Soom normal early this year (this is what I've ordered my Alpha body on – I would show pictures, but he hasn't arrived yet sadly)
To quote the email I had from Alice in January: "Sorry they don't have normal yellow skin in domestic market (they consider us their domestic dealer) but they have Soom normal skin. We're not sure whether it's the same as their normal yellow skin".

    14. Now that's strange, Alice telling you they don't have normal yellow since they are considered their domestic dealer.
I wish I could find actual pictures and more information with that color. Soom normal would be interesting, if that is indeed similar. I believe that is a darker normal, not as pale as Ringdoll ns?

      • x 1
    15. Yes, as far as I'm aware, Ringdoll normal is more of a pale peachy colour that isn't too far off white.
Soom Normal would be yellow toned, but it'll be interesting to see how Ringdoll's version turns out given how often Soom themselves change resin colours.
I know some Alphas are making their way to their owners, so if mine arrives, I'll share a resin comparison

      • x 1
    16. I don't know what Soom normal looks like, but I wouldn't consider Ringdoll's normal close to white. The ones I have are actually pretty close in tone to Loongsoul's normal yellow.

    17. @quilleth That's very interesting – being near Loongsoul NY would put Ringdoll NY in the same ballpark as Volks Fair/Normal...I'm still curious as to Alice implying there's domestic and international colour selections

    18. I got a reply from acbjd regarding the normal yellow skin for Elzevir.
"Regarding normal yellow, Ringdoll said it's only available for some of their dolls, sorry it's not available for Elzevir. Ringdoll normal yellow is close to Soom normal."

Ok .. So now you say it's not available for Elzevir. After three emails and it beeing a choice on acbjd.. Thanks I guess

But good to know more about the color.

      • x 1
    19. A possible new Elzevir appreciator!? I bought mine a couple of years ago and he's so damn adorable. A total impulse purchase, but one I absolutely do not regret.

    20. How is the face up of yours? I have seen some owner pictures that looked very pinkish. Which resin color is your Elzevir?

    21. His face up is not super pink honestly, it's more of a very subtle pinkish-blue hue, similar to what you'd see on people with thinner skin (like me!) Not that it looks like blood vessels or anything if that makes you worry. Mine is in "normal" resin.

    22. @Nasa I think the full set looks amazing on him.

@Zacarias Your Saladin is gorgeous. I hope they are sending the right mask on to you?

    23. How often does Ringdoll re-release dolls? And how many times does one doll get re-released? I know 78cm Baldwin IV got a rerelease, are there chances for more in the future?

    24. Depends on how popular the sculpts are I suppose. Some dolls never get rereleased, some get reworked then rereleased.

      • x 1
    25. They have seemed to have re-released a number of their dolls although some have taken a very long time to hit the market again like the Frankenstein. Maybe if you asked them if they plan to release that sculpt again they'd consider it?

      • x 1
    26. It might be strange of me to ask seeing as they recently did a re-release of it LOL. I'm a little bummed i missed out on Baldwin IV in 1/3 scale but honestly i'm hoping they WAIT a bit before re-releasing him again if they do, cause I need time to make space for a big doll.

I ordered his 1/4 size as its much more manageable in my current space and no matter what I didn't wanna miss out on him.

      • x 1
    27. Yeah, I saw the Baldwin in the smaller scale and was like please stop, RD. I haz no monies for the pretty boy you're so temptingly offering. I think if they were to release the Alpha in the 50-ish cm range I'd be totally screwed and I'd find the money for him.

I think I saw on... Manga-zine? a few days ago that they had a Baldwin in stock. I don't remember if it was a fullset or not.

      • x 1
    28. I might just need to get him secondhand down the line if he doesn't re-release, I'm in no rush as I prob shouldn't be going crazy on dolls w/o the space for them lol

but yes did cave on 1/4 Baldwin, JOIN THE DARK SIDE WITH ME!!!

    29. @isamomo Lol. I seriously don't need any encouragement to purchase resin. I'm heavily addicted to resin in the form of dolls (and quite comfortable in that addiction). This is how I ended up with 87 full dolls. I regret nothing.

I want to purchase an RD body for a very old (but new to me) DZ Caesar head to be the partner to Shaytien (RD Ksitigarbara The Virgo that I got for a steal during their Black Friday sale in 2024). I'd also like to purchase a body for the Soom Sphaler head I have. My wants currently exceed what I'm comfortable spending on my addiction (and the Canadian dollar still isn't the best so exchange is painful *sigh). Of course this doesn't mean Doll Desires isn't trying to convince Responsible Adult to change their mind.

      • x 3
    30. Aughhhh I hear you on how painful the CAD conversion is right now. I briefly considered Omega when she dropped to shell a novel character that started a project journal for, and then rapidly decided to make do with what I had!

      • x 1
    31. My boyfriend is Canadian so I see how much the conversion rate sucks! Totally understand. I think Responsible Adult comes in when you need them the most, and when it's time for fun, Doll Desires is there for you lol. I really do hope you're able to get what you want though, even if not right at this moment! My wants also exceed what I am comfortable spending most of the time lol.

    32. @Chameleon It seems to be trading around the $0.73USD mark this week, which isn't too bad if you're making small purchases (say under $20USD) but once you start heading into the bigger values, you start wondering if you like ramen enough to eat it for every meal for the next month or so in order to buy that doll.

There was a doll OT for this thread that I loved and would've snapped up in a heartbeat (who has since sold) but.... he was in the upper price range and once shipping was added, conversion happened and potential Customs fees were factored in, he would've been roughly $3,000CAD. I called him Mortgage Boy.

    33. @isamomo The RD body is going to happen because it ticks a lot of the boxes I want for the character and it's currently on sale. The other body I want is an MP buy so that's a risk to delay the purchase since generally it's first come, first serve. But a body for that head is a secondary concern since I don't know who he is as a character at the moment. But I really like that body for that head.

Arrrgh! the Dolly Gods are purely tormenting me with 2 bodies at the same time because it amuses them.

      • x 1
    34. @Iron_Dog I'm glad at least one of your desires will be fulfilled! As for MP, yeah, you gotta jump on that stuff while its available. I miss out on a lot of stuff cause I hesitate, but sometimes that's how you know it just wasn't meant for you and you'll find it another day, in another way (or the same way later on lol). Maybe if it's still there waiting for you when you're ready it means it was meant for you.

    35. @isamomo The RD sale has been up for a while and it appear that it's available for 25 days (or until what's available is gone). Possibly they're trying to clear some old stock? So by that token, I really need to get moving and click buy before it's all gone/the sale is done. I'd been waiting for a cheque to come in but I swear it's like pulling teeth from a chicken to get paid as an independent contractor in the construction industry. I've done the contracted work; please to be paying me now.

A friend (who also has dolls) has said the MP body showing up when it did (about a month after buying the head) means I'm supposed to buy that body. I'm having a hard time arguing against that point. This is the problem of discussing resin purchases with friends who are just as doll obsessed, lol.

To be fair, I do have the money available to purchase both items and it won't cause me any undue hardship and affects nothing related to real life responsibilities. it's just that's a lot of money out all at once and as addicted as I am to dolls, I'm still miserly/overly cautious in spending money period and I tend to dither a LOT before any significant-to-me purchases (this would be anything over $50).

    36. Yeah…. I was looking at secondhand dolls on eBay (OT to this thread!) that were into 4 digits CAD, that I had to talk myself out of, so I feel that!

    37. WOw I relate to this so much. I have a really hard time spending a lot of money all at once. Often times I think about something for so long the opportunity passes me by before I can buy it. Sometimes it's for my own good, but other times I regret not jumping at the chance.

    38. @isamomo I had some big expenses last month all clustered together (AutoCAD alone was $855CAD *winces and that's just the LT version). This month, it's physiotherapy to deal with the plantar fasciitis (both feet *sigh) that has just become intolerable. Because the PF isn't a work related injury or something referred to by a doc, OHIP (the provincial health plan) doesn't cover it so I'm out-of-pocket for $700CAD for 10 visits (and that's at a bulk discount rate!). I also know that 10 visits isn't going to get the PF to a reasonable level so there's that, too.

All that has Responsible Adult and Miserly Adult giving Dolly Desires massive, criminal side eye over proposed dolly purchases right now. Of course, Dolly Desires doesn't give a flying fadoo/is ignoring the looks. And their argument for both purchases now is almost reasonable. Send help! Not sure if the help is for or against at this point to be honest.

    39. I feel you on the poor CAD conversion – I'm Australian and the AUD hasn't gotten above 0.65 USD this year.
Omega was very tempting, but I'm saving for a holiday, so I had to say no. At least when my Alpha body turns up, I'll have a giant cyborg in the house!

      • x 1
    40. @castironteapot Ouch! I guess I should be grateful that the CAD$ is sitting where it is right now even if it's not on par with the USD$. I'm jealous that you snagged an Alpha. I just barely managed to talk myself out of hitting the buy button but it was a pretty close call.

      • x 1
    41. @Iron_Dog I'm a sucker for robots and cyborgs, and I ummed and ahhhed over him until the second last day of the new doll discount period when I decided to bite the bullet.
AUD conversion sucks, but at least I ordered through Alice Collections, who I've only had excellent experiences with, including the return of a wrong colour head. I don't mind paying a bit extra to have an agent's support

      • x 1
    42. Sending help! Realistically I'd hold myself back on making large purchases if I was out that much, just like im holding back after buying Baldwin 1/4 scale recently. But I think your Responsible Adult and Dolly Desires must figure it out amongst themselves and let you know the result lol. My holding back might take a possible pause during Resin Rose in the next few weeks though....hehe

    43. I'd love to go to a BJD convention again. The last one I went to was in 2016 in Buffalo. That was such a great time. I mean, there is DollNorth as a mini-con during AnimeNorth (and I did go this year) but to go to a con that is JUST for dolls is so much more fun. I know there's going to be like a 1 day con in Hamilton, Ontario, in 2026 and that is reasonably close to me but it's also just 1 day and I selfishly want more.

      • x 2
    44. Ooh I didn't know there was a con in Ontario next year! I'm in that weird part of NY where some parts of Canada are actually closer than NYC, and I have family there I could stop and see. I'll have to check that out!

      • x 1
    45. It's Called Resin Circle and is on Saturday April 11, 2016, in Hamilton, Ontario from 11am-6pm. tickets are live on Eventbrite. General tickets are $28CAD (49 tickets left as of right now) and VIP tickets are $39CAD (14 left). There's also some vendor table spots available for a fee as well.

I don't know what the attendance cap is for this event or how fast the tickets are selling but the sales went live on July 7th. I assume the cap is set by whatever the occupancy limit is for the room(s) involved in the event.

    46. Good to know, thanks!

    47. Omg that sounds so fun, My bf is in Ontario so sometime we will have to go to that one. Not this upcoming April though cause he's coming HERE for Sakura con. Possibly in 2027 maybe :D

      • x 1
    48. I feel you on that! It's put me right off buying dolls for the longest time. I've bought a head or two here and there, but full dolls are out unless they're something on my wish list. I have my eye on precisely one release later this year from a different company and that shall be it! (The conversion for that one will be even worse because it's in GBP )
I'm just content to chill with the dolls I have (and I get to fawn over @Kavarr's Frankenstein when he arrives! ;))

      • x 1
    49. How do you get the motivation to get them faceups? I have an SD boy that I got for cheap but has had no faceup this whole time and I feel bad about it lol, all my dolls I've gotten blank have yet to have faceups, i try and buy them w faceup included. It sucks cause I myself am an artist and with practice I think I could do it myself, but I'm nervous about it lol. But yeah I would love to get into hybriding more and customizing more overall, I feel its more budget friendly too esp for BIG dolls.

      • x 1
    50. I cannot do face-ups so I have to send all my guys out who arrive to me blank. If I'm buying new, I'll frequently get them blank as I have a specific vision for them. But sometimes the default face-up is so nice, I'm like yeah, I'm good with that. There's also been a few that I've purchased 2nd hand because of the face-up.

Wai-Lan (OT for this thread) has an absolutely stunningly detailed face-up. Problem is, I've no idea who painted him so beautifully. The person I bought him from was not the original owner and didn't get him from the person who painted him so it's a total mystery. The only thing I know is that the seller was told he was painted for a contest of some sort.

Shaytien has the default Virgo face-up and I love it. It suits his character perfectly. I'm beyond pleased that I was able to get him with the default. I also really like both the Ashford sculpt and the default face-up RD has given him.

    51. I also wont get the doll with the face up if im not absolutely in love with it! I'm a little nervous to send blanks out to be painted tbh. I bought RD Baldwin and I love his face up personally!!! I gotta be careful cause once I buy a company face up I feel horrible taking it off so I really have to love it.

    52. I'm very picky about face-ups so I need to love something default to get it. That pickiness has also led to my having difficulties in finding artists I like. There's some that I've had paint my boys and I love their work but sadly, they've stopped taking commissions for face-ups. I'd absolutely send more of my guys who need face-ups to them in a heartbeat if they were taking commissions again.

I have some OT to this thread boys who need face-ups but I won't send them out until I've solidified their characters. I'm fortunate enough that there is a very talented artist who is close to me that I can send them to. The heads never leave the province so there's no threat of Customs hitting me, which is awesome. I have a friend overseas who paints beautifully and I'd like to have her paint at least one of my boys but the VAT/Customs in her country is painful and would add significantly to the overall cost as I refuse to send resin out without insurance.

    53. If you have a friend overseas you could have her come visit and just have the head on her when she comes! That is if she'd have a reasoning to visit Canada.

    54. Usually when the weather, available time, and my inspiration line up (which is very rare these days given I've had severe burnout and compounding health issues the last few years). I have enough painted up that I've got plenty to choose from if I want to take any to a meet, and some of mine still look stunning blank so I'm not super fussed.

      • x 2
    55. I'm heavily lacking motivation now, especially since im working full time I find myself not knowing what to do with my little free time cause I have so much to do. I'd love to give more attention to my in progress dolls.

      • x 1
    56. Perhaps write a list of the things you need to do, then then you get the time choose whatever is most appropriate in that moment (so sealings heads for face ups if the weather's good for example).

    57. Hmmm yeah I should try this. I feel like i'm in the spot where I have bigger priorities than customizing dolls, but then I wish I could just do it ahaha. Honestly its the set up and prep that ruins me. Same thing with my art, I lack the space and traditional art requires space and a little set up that I just dont have the room for, so I gotta clear other tasks before doing my creative work.

      • x 1
    58. i have a list of dolly tasks. I rarely check it, lol. I end up doing whatever I fancy at the moment. I want to work on the wigs I was making (for dolls OT to this thread) but I think they're just not going to work as I wanted them to. So it's on to plan B for them. Thing is, I'm not sure how to go about with plan B. I know what I'd like to accomplish but it's the pattern making that's holding me up.

Ideally, the wigs should have as few seams as possible since they're for dolls with head circumference slightly under 3". I am going to try doing the paper towel and tape method to get a pattern going but I'm not 100% sure it's going to work since they're so small.

    59. Hua Cheng made it home and it took me 2 hours to unpack and dress him. Way to many dangly chains tangled up. He is gorgeous and the RGM5 body is huge!

    60. Just put Frankenstein on layaway...kinda scared about his size. Only big doll I have is a skinny dream valley guy so idk how big this muscly guy is rlly gonna be. Hopefully I'll like it tho!!!! I just had to get him cause he fits my OC perfectly and i love how intricate all his engineering is w the removable pieces, so cool!
