Maintenance Restringing + Maintenance

May 12, 2024

    1. Hi everyone, I need some help locating the right kind of elastic to restring my Pipos Charlotte. Her elastic is all stretched out with age, but Pipos doesnt sell their size elastic on the website, and I've tried finding the right size in shops near me and have been unsuccessful... I'm open to tips about where to buy/what size elastic to buy for 26 cm dolls. Her elastic channels are pretty narrow.

She is also a bit dirty, but don't know what I should do to clean her up. Would just a regular dish soap bath work? she doesn't have any blushing to worry about on her body. I'm also worried that her eye putty won't be pliant any more if I take it out since its rather old, so I am also open to eye putty recommendations :'D

    2. I think any round 1,5mm-2,5mm (I think 1/8th inch in American) elastic will do, but shock cord/bungee cord of the same diameter would probably be the best option. I'm not personally very picky about my elastics, but I'm also fine with restringing my dolls frequently :sweat

For cleaning, just take some dish soap and a sponge or a soft toothbrush or a magic eraser if there's some really stubborn stains, and just go to town. Oh and the doll should preferably be in pieces for the washing! Wet elastics sounds like a recipe for mouldy doll. If you're worried about damaging the doll somehow, you can make a dish soap bath and just kind of swoosh the doll pieces around in there, scrubbing with a soft sponge or a rag. Rinse well! And if you have really hard water where you live, it's a good idea to dry the pieces thoroughly, so the drying water won't leave any marks.

Aand for eye putty blu tack or white tack is a great and affordable choice! ^^

    3. If you're unsure about the elastic diameter, you can always measure the diameter of the channels - the channels in arms are usually a bit thinner than the channels in body/legs. Round elastic from sewing supplies stores works but might wear out faster, shock cord like Ankka mentioned above might hold up longer - I usually buy mine from AliExpress.

For cleaning, I'd add to the above that make sure you sort your left and right side limbs into separate containers so they don't get mixed up, it's not super fun to try to figure out which is which if they are not marked :sweat For eye putty also silicone ear plugs work!

    4. For cleaning, read through the stickys. This one will probably tell you all you need.
