I was looking at listings for some of the Volks limited collab dollfies, which typically go for upwards of $1500-$2000 secondhand on Ebay for the fullsets, and noticed quite a few listings of just the heads with their respective wigs and eyes, all for around $200-$300 each. At first I thought, wow what a great way to get a grail doll without having to fork up a thousand bucks for the fullset, but then it occurred to me to worry that perhaps these listings are suspicious? My reasons for suspicion are as follows: - limited collab dollfies, as far as I know, are only released for sale as fullsets, and you couldn't buy the heads alone. Therefore, why do these secondhand sellers sell only the head but not the clothes, accessories, etc, which are unique to the collaboration characters? There isn't a lot of use for the clothes outside of the original doll unless you want your other dolls to "cosplay" canon characters etc. - I've heard that it's very uncommon for limited DD collab heads to popup on the secondhand market as heads alone, but these ebay listings were pretty numerous in that sense, and all by the same person more or less. - I've also heard there is a scammer who lists their rare dollfies for sale on sites like ebay, only to never send the doll once payment is complete. I assume limited collab DDs fall under this category of rare dollfies and could potentially be scam listings like this. I'm worried that either the person is a scammer with no intention of sending the doll head at all after payment, or that the heads could possibly be fakes, which would explain why they don't have the collab outfits and accessories for sale. What do you think? Am I overthinking this or are these worries logical? I can link some of the ebay listings if that helps as well, just ask! I don't want to needlessly slander or call out the seller(s) without reason, which is why I didn't include any links or names in this post.
Just like some resin sets, some people will Split a DD doll with a few different people to get the parts they want. Other times, if someone only wants specific parts they will just sell the rest (this happens with the default outfits, accessories, eyes all the time). Also, sometimes someone someone will piece-meal a full set to get more money from selling the whole thing as one unit. It really just depends. I cannot honestly tell you if the one on Ebay is a scammer or not, but it is not unheard of to just see heads or eyes or pieces from a limited DD collab set on the after market.
Seconding that splitting a limited DD isn't unheard of. The seller might have bought their dolls in a split with someone else and have now decided to sell their collection? Also, limited DD heads do pop up from time to time on the secondhand market or on secondhand shops like Mandarake or Dollyteria. Sometimes with their limited eyes. Also seen people just sell the limited eyes or wigs. It's possible that the seller might have sold the outfits to people who have made their own custom dolls of those characters in question. There are people who might not like how the official DD of a character looks and prefer to make their own. Or this seller might be keeping the bodies and outfits for their own custom doll heads? Just because they're only selling the limited DD heads with eyes and wig doesn't automatically say scammer to me. I would look at other things like their feedback.
To be honest, the ebay prices for a limited fullset DD are way higher most of the time than what they go for on Mandarake or even local forums. I wouldn't use these as a benchmark anyway, because most sellers there are just scalpers and not actual collectors selling their collection. Furthermore, no, it is not that uncommon for single heads to be sold. Mari already listed numerous reasons why that can happen: - they purposely sell the fullset in parts because people are often more willing to pay premium for single parts vs the full set (since it's harder to get single parts) - the person tried to piece together their own full set and have doubles they don't need - the person themselves only bought a part, realized getting all the others is too difficult and opted to just sell what they already have - the person really only liked the head and never owned any of the other pieces (that could be me, I don't care for full-sets of anime characters I don't even know, but I can still appreciate the face sculpt itself)
Honestly I don't know how I forgot about splits! I should have considered that as a reason. I'll probably check out Mandarake as an option for getting the head too. Oh I wasn't aware of that! I guess that makes a lot of sense considering the type of website ebay tends to be. At least knowing the fullsets aren't as pricey elsewhere gives me some hope that I could own one
I want to add that ebay prices are very much inflated as well due to ebay's high seller fees. Ebay charges 12.9% of total sale AND ship price. So on a $1k item, that's a $129 fee (not including a fee on ship price if you charged shipping). When listing on eBay, some will up their prices to offset the high ebay fees, so the item may be listed elsewhere for 10-15% cheaper. I believe Mercari also has the same fees. So those two places aren't great for figuring out market cost of an item.
@ashefaust If you have specific listings you are interested in having people review, please make sure that you only post these in the Ask the Mods area. If there is any concern that an item could be a recast, it is against the rules to post about it in the public areas of the forums.
