Hello! I’m interested in buying a large scale BJD from ResinSoul/Bobobie. The main criteria that I’m looking for is a doll around 58-60cm in height, with a SD elf head to fit a SD female human body. I provided an illustration of my OC and a chart comparing some sculpts for visual reference. Currently, I'm torn between investing in a ResinSoul Ai, Lian or Rui. Also, if anyone has any advice/experience with ResinSoul retailers (such as Denver Doll Emporium or The Junky Spot)—or any reference photos of RS/BBB dolls—it would be much appreciated! Thank you.
Thank you! I agree, though I wish there was a photo of Rui without a wig so I can see the ears better (ha ha). Otherwise, Lian and Ai are strong contenders.
This is a really cool idea for shelling characters. I'd probably say either Ai or Rui would look amazing as your character and they both have slightly softer jaw lines to look good as female/feminine characters too. I've ordered from junkyspot aaaaaages ago (like 2009 ages ago). I purchased a doll from Bobobie via them and they were super helpful and kept me informed the entire time. Obviously it has been a while since but I'd definitely buy from them again. Good luck with your project, I'm sure your character will look amazing whichever sculpt you decide on!
@NatApocalypse I actually found wigless photos on Flickr! If you search for Resinsoul Rui on Flickr, someone has taken photos of their doll to show off her ears! Maybe that will help you make up your mind?
I can see that as well! With this character I can see her blending elements of femininity and androgyny (similar to traditional elves in folklore and media). And thank you for the feedback, I appreciate it!
I was also thinking Ai or Rui, they're both really pretty. I have ordered in stock from Denver Doll but not preorder. Usually it's good, though my most recent, a Bobobie Apollo, arrived to me with two broken ankles and a huge crack up his shin. However, I'm not sure when or how that happened, and DDE was very fast to respond to messages and is going to get me replacement parts, so I still consider it a good experience, since accidents can happen to anybody and they're working to fix it. I have ordered from JunkySpot, but it's been several years. They only sell in stock dolls, so it might be a little harder to get what you want, but they ship quickly and I've always had good experiences. Ordering direct from ResinSoul is also good, and their customer service is fast and very helpful. I don't recommend ordering directly from Bobobie--their communication is lacking, the waits are longer, and if there is a problem, it takes constant reminders to fix it. From looking around, it seems I'm not the only one who had problems.
Thank you so much! I was thinking of ordering from Denver Doll, since their website is easier to navigate. My only experience with BJD shopping has been in person (both in the US and Japan), but it's good to know that DDE is proactive and quick to respond!
I ordered directly from Resinsoul when I ordered my Zhen. It was just a hair quicker than ordering through a dealer. They were easy to talk to and I was able to make a special request for her faceup and body blushing. I was super happy with the whole experience. Judging by the reference photos I agree with the current votes. Both sculpts have similar features so you can’t really go wrong with either.
Just keep in mind, if you order through DDE for a pre-order, it will take a lot longer than if you order direct from Resinsoul. DDE takes around 6 months, because they go through Bobobie (who are very slow and not the best at communication), while Resinsoul takes around 2 months. You also don't get the Resinsoul CoA or nice carrying bag if you order through DDE (you get no CoA and the BBB sleeping bag). Here's the Resinsoul waiting room, I definitely suggest giving it a read through. ^^ Also, if you like the face of one sculpt, but the ears of a different one, you can always ask Resinsoul if it's possible (like Rui with Ai ears).
Ordering direct from Resinsoul only takes 2 months and their service is great! I vote for Rui. There are some photos of the head without wig on instagram: Link 1 Link 2 Link 3 (this one has a wig but I like the styling!) Instagram is great for reference photos! :3
It's been a few years since I last ordered something from Resinsoul, but I'll agree with the others in saying they're easy to work with and very accommodating. They're also quick to ship once the doll is cast. As for which candidates work best of the selection for your OC—I'd have to say I'm leaning more towards either Rui or Lian. Ai has a shorter, squatter face compared to your OC, while the other two have the proper facial proportions. If I had to lean more towards one between those two, I'd go with Rui. I had a Lian some time back, and she's also a very lovely sculpt. Regarding DDE and Junkyspot—DDE will take longer due to them having to submit bulk orders all at once, plus the shipping between RS and them and then to you. With Junkyspot, (it's been some years since I myself ordered from them, so I'm going off what I recall from my experience) they were very quick to ship and easy to communicate with. The caveat: they only sell in-stock dolls, so you'd either have to buy whatever they currently have, or wait until they get the one you want in stock (which could take some time). Honestly, I'd lean more towards ordering directly Resinsoul. If you were to go with Bobobie, however—DDE would be the better option. BBB are notoriously slow with communication, and difficult to do so on top of it.
@LikablePlatypus @LupusDarkmoon @lemonsky @jade-eyed-cat That's good to know, thank you! I'm not familiar with shopping for BJDs online, though I'm happy to hear that ResinSoul is quick to respond and has fast shipping. Any and all advice as to ordering from them directly is appreciated!
Made an updated version of this ResinSoul/Bobobie elf ear comparison chart. Posting it here for anyone who would like to use it as a visual reference! BJDs listed here: ResinSoul Ai, ResinSoul Lian, ResinSoul Rui, ResinSoul Su, ResinSoul Yun.
