Resinsoul and Bobobie Mini Discussion Thread - Part 33

So I'd been looking at MSD boys by various makers, making vague noises about kitsune boys...and then RS goes and drops this in my lap. /sigh (I'm not actually mad.)

 

Oh she's cuute!! The ears and tail aren't included it looks like, but they're pretty awesome looking!

 

The tail and ears are so cool! I'm assuming the tail attaches with a magnet? It seems like a pretty hefty tail to attach with just a magnet vs. being strung onto the body somehow.

 

Qingqiu is gorgeous! I like that they have a newer sculpt with a slimmer/pointier face, as I'm not a big fan of most of their narrower-faced older sculpts. I might even just nab a Qingqiu head and hybrid it with a different body... so many ideas...

 

It looks like the ears and tail are included as a bonus freebie until late June as a promotion!

She has an unusual face with those downcast lips and the slight part with the teeth showing. I'm curious what she looks like blank.

There's a bunch of RS fantasy parts i'd love to order separately for something. I hope they do more tails and wings and feet and stuff.

 

I asked them for a blank pic of her face and a pic of her body from the front and they only gave me the body pic, I feel bad asking them a second time for the face picture, so maybe someone else needs to ask?

 

I wonder whether I could get Qingqiu's hips on Rainbow's body? Because I love the fully visible peanut hip joints so much more but Rainbow's headsculpt is more compelling to me

More or less seconding the "probably!" response to this question. I've quickly learned that with Resinsoul, it never hurts to ask! Well... it might hurt the wallet a little, but that's business as usual in this hobby

I just put in a pretty exotic order with them about a week ago, because I needed a body for a floating head I have from another company. The requested body uses parts of four different dolls: Ming's faun legs, Sui's hands, Wukong's body, and dog paws instead of hooves. They didn't so much as bat an eyelash at that, and also offered to shave the neck down to fit the specifications of the other company's head. I doubt they'd refuse your particular request unless it truly didn't fit, but then again, the dog paws came from a doll in a completely different scale and they upscaled that part, so... there's that!

But man, this new release's timing is hilarious to me, because the thing I just described ordering is meant for a kitsune character! I guess the original concept for the head was for a wolf (taur) but I'm reworking him as a kitsune. I'd be asking them if I could add Qingqiu's tail to my order in a heartbeat if not for the fact that I think my plan to make a fuzzy, wired tail will ultimately work and look better on him.

 

Oooh would LOVE to see how your custom order turns out! It sounds almost identical to a custom body I’m planning, except with the new female body instead and with Rainbow wings and Pi feet (and in a custom purple, egads). I’m hoping they’ll be able to use those thigh peanuts the new female body has with Ming legs.

I also want to order two of those jointed tails and combine them into a mega tail

 

Okay that's pretty funny, what you're describing is similar to something I want to do, but mine would be the male edition! I put it on hold because I've got my bird man quota somewhat filled by a different company and it became less pressing to do the Resinsoul order, but... it's definitely still on my mind.

I'll make sure to post in this thread eventually, I've been meaning to anyway! I'm unsure about the posting rules if it's a hybrid (in this case Dream Valley/Resinsoul), but I could post the body alone if need be. I have two others who are "interesting" customs too. One's a Jun head on Sui body, the other's a Dawn head on the male centaur body, I just keep forgetting to gather my photos and come back in here with 'em. Might as well wait til the new guy appears, then do a group shot!

 

As far as I know, so long as both pieces are legit and on-topic you can talk about hybrids all you like and most threads aren't too fussy so long as it's pertinent. I've got two (Bimong/Argonautica dolls and Huajing/Allowed Dollshe) and I've never had any trouble talking about them.

 

A fair few of my resinsouls are cobbled together from different parts made by them lol.

The scaled up feet do tempt me a lot though. I've always wanted paws on a doll.

But my next planned resinsoul order I think will be a body for this grey head I have here who's from a small artist. It apparently matches "soom grey" and resinsoul's light grey might be close enough, least other people's pictures suggest so. I want a sort of lanky body but I also want a male body and they keep teasing me with gorgeous upgraded girl bodies instead.

I also wonder if the wukong body would work for the doll leaves Ben head I have. His original body was too short for him, it made him really bobble headed so i've always wanted a taller body that would balance out the length of his noggin a bit better.

I am trying to be strict on myself about new dolls though. I have so many I can't really display them all any longer and I don't like that. It bothers me that I can't have them out and enjoy them you know?

 

Oh I absolutely know the feeling and that is the main factor in me slowing down my new doll acquisition by a lot. That and buying more shelves lol. But I definitely get not wanting to leave them neglected in boxes.

I've always been super impressed since I first heard about the custom requests Resinsoul will do. They actually were willing to add a thigh swivel/mobility joint to the 45cm boy body I got with no extra charge! And those paws are adorbs. Did I miss something or were they a custom sculpt? I forget if Resinsoul had existing body sculpts with paws or not. Either way they are really cute.

Ooh I hope you can get a good match! Resin matching for hybrids has always scared me a little because it often means dropping $100s on bodies or other parts that may look completely off in person after all. It's actually why I went with the Resinsoul body for mine, because if it was a mistake it would be the least expensive one, and I already liked the sculpting of the 45cm one a lot so since it seemed right for the character I went for it. My DZ Jake is a little bobble headed on it but I don't mind the stylized look and his clothes are planned to be a bit bulky anyway.

Also, the character has extensive scarring around the chin and neck area as well as elsewhere, so hiding the resin mismatch should hopefully not be too hard once he's painted.

I also restrung him recently and put the knot for the arms elastic inside the chest instead of the neck and he already poses so much better. Unfortunately he also got a small chip in his wrist and a hairline crack right next to it... :c

But I plan to make the repair with epoxy the next time I have him apart, and I'm watching it for now to make sure it doesn't get worse. Since he's going to have scarring on his arms as well, I can cover up the epoxy gray at least fairly easily once I actually paint him.

But yeah, metal hemostats are NOT recommended for holding string in place while trying to get the damn hands back on the damn doll...
Restringing is a nightmare, honestly, but he does pose so much better now.

 

One of the doll bodies I got from uh... i think it was Myou, gave me a string puller tool as a free gift and it's really useful. It's like a thick crochet hook with a ring at one end to pull. The only problem is it's often not narrow enough for wrists or ankles. You can use an actual crochet hook for those.

But yeah, restringing can be a pain. I find the smaller dolls to be the absolute worst for it though. Narrower channels and smaller fragile parts. Getting the tension even seems impossible in smaller dolls.
drives me nuts.

 

The best restringing option for me is just steel wire folded in two. I've got crochet hooks but they're inferior to wire IMO. And I never use the hemostats. I use plastic dowels instead.

Just tried to e-mail Resinsoul about Qingqiu again. My initial e-mail was on Wednesday, with no response (which is unusual, given their speedy response times). This time I sent to both Sun's e-mail at 163.com URL and the admin e-mail; hopefully this gets it through. I've only recently had a problem with my e-mails not making it through on the first go but it's very annoying.

 

Just sent an email for a quote for very custom body for a Dream Valley head I just ordered. Oof.

Spoiler: Custom body details

I asked for a Ran body with the breasts completely removed, clawed hands, Rainbow’s wings added, Qingqiu’s ears and tail added, and the legs swapped with Rouxi’s legs with up-sized Pi feet instead of hooves. I asked if Rouxi’s legs be modified to fit the thigh peanuts that Ran’s body has. This body will also have two colors; black and a custom purple color (Pantone 2105).

I asked for an extra Qingqiu tail in white resin. I plan to combine the two tails into an extra long stripey tail, kind of like a ring-tailed lemur tail.

Hopefully they’ll be able to do everything I was *very* tempted to ask if they could modify the Rouxi animal legs to have double-jointed knees, but thought that would be too far. Some other time, perhaps!

This sounds so cool (I love your idea for the alternating-color tail!), I really hope they will do all of it! And if they do, I feel like they deserve some kind of award Resinsoul has gotta be the most accommodating company out there, but even for them, some requests have to be pretty challenging.

 

Ooooh good news! Resinsoul replied back a few hours later saying they can do everything! I haven’t officially placed the order yet, but this’ll be an order I’ll very much be looking forward to unboxing

OMG long time in this thread someone told me that someone had custom paws..like OMG how did you get them to do that I've been asking for like sooo many years literally like probably 10yrs and they kept saying no. They look amazing maybe I'll have better luck now if I ask again..lol.

 

I think the key is that they're not a brand new sculpt. I asked if they could upsize the dog paws from their smaller dolls to fit a MSD body. I'd also asked them to upsize the unicorn horn on Nian to be a MSD size as well, so it's not just the paws.

 

Yep I have tons of customs from them, been buying Resinsoul since I first started in the hobby in 2010. They've done some pretty cool customs. I even asked them for a doll that was half one color and half another color and they said no, but then Tears was released, of course I totally didn't realize she was a limited doll so she sold out before I could get her..lol. I'll have to get creative in how I ask next time.

 

Does anyone have tips on where to get a restringing tool that fits Resinsoul MSDs? I restrung my girl today, but the restringing tool I got from Denver Doll Emporium was too big to fit through most of the string channels in her limbs, so I ended up using a piece of florist wire doubled over as kinda like a needle but OUCH--it really dug into my fingers. Is there anywhere I can buy one that's the right size, or do I need to make one using a wire coat hanger or something?

Also I think I need to restring her legs. Wiring and adjusting the stringing in her arms helped her arm posing, but her legs are still kicky, even with a wire through them. Does that mean that the strings are too tight?

Also (sorry, lots of questions in this post lol)--how does one solve ankle-floppiness? I don't think adjusting the string tension will make her ankles less floppy/bendy, especially since her legs are already pretty tight. But I currently don't pose her standing without a support because unless I pose her exactly right, she'll buckle at the ankles, at least when wearing little flat shoes. Do I need to suede them?

 

I use heavier gauge aluminum wire, and make it like 2x as long as I think I need so I can for sure get it through all the pieces of an arm or leg. Then I clamp the wire with some hemostats or pliers, twist the wire around a few times over the times of the hemostats and pull. No hand digging there, and the wire doesn't slip out because I twist it.

For kicking and flopping, suedeing helps a ton! I always do the neck hole as well since my Reainsouls tend to want to twist their heads oddly. It also helps with the standing!

For suedeing, do you use actual suede, moleskin, or something else?
I think I'd prefer the silicone kip method since there's no gluing required for that one (gluing/sticking stuff to my doll makes me nervous), but I'm trying to figure out where to get them. I checked Volks' website, and they only have SD sized ones. Do I just need to go to the hardware store or something to find a sheet of silicone to cut them out of myself, or are there pre-made MSD ones somewhere?

 

You could trim down the SD sized ones to fit, but you should also be able to find silicone washers in different sizes at a hardware store. They won't know the term kips though, so searching for that on most hardware store websites doesn't yield any results.

I'm having a hard time finding thin silicone washers the right size, so I tried suedeing her ankles with fun foam/craft foam this morning. Maybe it helped a little?
The silicone would probably have more friction, if I can find it. Tempted to buy some cheap silicone wig caps and cut them to size/shape, lol.

 

You can also use hot glue to suede.

 

I got some off of amazon. They aren't clear like the ones Volks sells, but since they shouldn't be too visible when the doll is fully strung, it doesn't bother me too much. They'll need to be trimmed down for most of the joints, though, since the pack i got was just one size. If you try the wig caps I bet you could get a decent amount of kips from just a couple! I'd be interested to see how that works for you!

The new girl is pretty and she's almost exactly what I've been thinking about lately. I've been window shopping for either a 1/4 or 1/6 vampire.

I emailed them asking for a blank photo of the head and asked about the body. They said Yousu and Qingqiu have the same body. I'll have to wait a week for a blank photo of Yousu's head.

 

I'm looking forward to being able to discuss the new 42cm body when I get Qingqiu; very curious as to how the thigh mobility joint affects the overall standing right out of the box. I'm not finding Yousu as pretty, but I think part of that may be the faceup they went with. If nothing else, it's nice to have an face with fangs already on it as an option for people; no limited doll or additional sculpting fees issues.

 

My new Wukong/Ming/Sui/Dog custom arrived today! Add "Dawn" to the mix, I guess, but only temporarily. I got this body for a Dream Valley Order head, but because that head was secondhand, I'm waiting to run it by the mods before posting, even though it has a COA and all that's a total 1:1 match for my firsthand Dream Valley fellas. I might be 99.9% certain but I'm taking no chances

So...Dawn head it is! For the moment. I need a new s-hook anyway, because the Resinsoul default one is way too wide for the Dream Valley head.

His thighs aren't a different color from the rest of the body, it's just a weird lighting thing. But anyway... I'm thrilled with the result. He actually stands very well on those paws, though only if the leggies are straight out. All the pieces went together even better than I imagined. Resinsoul saving the day once again!

 

Those paws look so good! I definitely think my next custom order from them will include some big paws. I just love Resinsoul’s digitigrade legs so much.

 

Welcome to the paws club! I'm so glad to see other people are getting the digi legs they've wanted. I don't know why pawed digi legs are like hens' teeth, but bless Resinsoul for giving us all a solution.

 

those paws look excellent! I've always found though that while I love the Ming legs, they never want to actually KEEP their pose so getting them to stay digigrade is really awkward. Does anyone have a solution to that?

 

Thank you! Definitely recommend the paws, they're super cute. It's funny, I didn't like the look of them nearly so much on what I assume was the original model (the tiny dog dolls), but they translated super well to the 1/4 scale. I'm hoping all these paw orders might inspire Resinsoul to officially make this a "thing"... especially since they just put out that fox girl! It would have been perfect for her to come with a canid leg option.

All thanks to you! Or so I think. I believe it was your post with the doll that had the Ming/Yao legs and the paws. If I hadn't seen that, I wouldn't have even thought to ask Resinsoul about it, because I wouldn't have envisioned those parts working together that well.

Resinsoul has truly become my hero thanks to stuff like this. Floating head in a particular/uncommon color, that needs a likewise oddly-specific body? Resinsoul to the rescue!

Now I just need them to make a modular snake/noodle dragon/merfolk sort of situation... if I keep saying it, maybe I can manifest it. I hinted towards such a thing in one of my emails with them, so who knows? It's the Year of the Snake, now's a great time to do it!

I've been pondering that myself, but I can't think of anything that would actually keep the legs in position. Or rather, I'm finding it's the upper body that really doesn't want to cooperate. If I have the legs posed similarly to how they are in my picture, the whole upper body slumps in an unhelpful direction. I'm thinking it would need to be engineered from the ground up to have the legs and upper body strung separately, like some of the switchable parts from companies like Dream Valley. That, and a bunch of sueding and wiring would probably help.

 

In case anybody was hoping the full body pic of Qingqui just had the bits edited out...nope, I can confirm that her default is an angel body.

Guessing this all ties in to the censoring that's been discussed in other threads. Not sure if that means that they can still add nipples/genitalia on special request if you really want them, or if all their molds are going to be updated (especially since from what I understand, resin molds are only good for a relatively small number of casts.)

Overall, though, I'm really pleased with her. Her faceup came out really pretty, she poses well (though I have to restring her, because knot in head), and the new beast parts are fun.

She's cute, and arrived fast!! Or maybe I'm misremembering when they released her xD I personally don't mind the angel body detail if that's the route they're going to go, but I know some people like more detailed sculpts too.

 

I actually kinda prefer the angel bodies because I find resin nipples really annoying in clothes (they always look cold lol) and the way they just kinda.. scratch between the legs on always makes me cringe. I dunno, it just... I don't like, I have a visceral reaction to the graze they give them. Maybe it's my whole down their damage trauma lol.

I like the hip shape.

Oh btw, I asked them about a blank sculpt image for Yousu and they've added one to the page now.

 

Tail poses very nicely, obviously not as much as a fabric tail would, but I'm happy with it, its ability to hold a pose, and how firmly it clamps on there. It's a huge step up from the solid resin tails of the dragons and I'm hoping this results in Resinsoul offering new flexy tails for them as well.

And yes, I'm thinking that the angel body chest is going to be nicer for clothing. No just...jutting out there.

I've now got the unboxing video made and uploaded to Youtube, for anybody who wants to see stuff like her tail posing in action. (I'm looking forward to blushing that thing.)

 

So excited about rs's new releases!!! I like yousu's serious expression a lot. I would love to see people's opinions/reviews of any kind on the new qingqiu/yousu body as well as the rainbow body. They both look really nice aesthetically! How are the double joints? and do the wrists/ankle hold any positions well?

I'm not usually hunting for specialized colors or anything, but these 2 new bodies have really caught my attention... got me thinking all kinds of ambitious things haha
