Resinsoul and Bobobie Mini Discussion Thread - Part 32

Nov 9, 2017

    1. I saw the website and lack of photos and was instantly turned off, but after being here a while and seeing owner doll photos and hearing about their service and how they will adjust an order and make it custom for you I have two dolls on my wish list! I'm super excited to eventually get a customized Dawn and Yun. I think they would make a great first time doll purchase, especially if you want to get creative! I really like the transparent resin choices <3

    2. Just cuz im nosey, how will you customize your dawn?

    3. Haha! Well, I love her face but I'm not a fan of her ears so I was going to see if I could swap them out for something like Dan's (though that head might be too big) or Yao's. I'd also like to do different color resins, so the human half is normal or light tan, the body in gray and then the hooves/tail in the clear blue resin. That's my current idea, though I'm partial to blue horse body and clear hooves/tail too. I haven't settled 100%, but I have a few months until my current doll is paid off.

    4. Interesting to hear about your experience with Twilight @Mutation - that middle joint is so weird, and I find her torso just popping off all the time! One of her legs just seems to constantly buckle at the knee also (even though its wired.. may try thicker wire?). Did you watch the videos where people wired their twilight? They glued the middle joint. I am still super happy with her though! Twilight was $238 compared to the $1000+ I would pay for a fairyland centaur.

    5. Ah ok. dans ears would be super adorable, close to horse ears. Ooo that resin combo sounds gorgeous. In the very distant future im thinking about getting dawn too, and i was thinking of doing something different like that too. Be fun to get her arms and hands to match her horse legs. Resinsoul is so cool letting us do stuff like that. I cant wait to hear and see what you decide on!

    6. I have a couple of $100 ResinSouls, a ~$125 Bobobie, a few $400 MiniFees, and at the top, a ~$825 FairyLand, among others in my collection. But I'll stick to those as the extremes. They're all good dolls. They aren't the same, by any means; there's a lot more parts in the FairyLand dolls than in the RS/BBB, with a lot tighter precision to how they fit together, which means they pose more easily and are a right pain to customize. RS/BBB are more simply designed, which makes them more of a "blank canvas" for a wider range of looks, much easier to customize, and with a little work they're actually decent at posing. They're much friendlier to take apart and reassemble, so they're a lot less intimidating when you're learning maintenance, too. The number of parts (and the thinness of some of the FairyLand ones making them likely prone to bad casts) definitely contributes to the price difference, as well as time spent sculpting and engineering. The level of work put in on the website and photos contributes, too; the sites are drastically different even before you get to the photo quality (though RS has stepped up their game from when they started out). And they're in different countries, so the cost of labour and materials differs.

What they have in common, though, is that they're both very nice dolls, different but still awesome. (And unfortunately, it does still seem to be trendy for people to crap on both companies still, it's unnecessary.) I love my "cheap" RS/BBB dolls just as much as the "expensive" MNFs, and I definitely have plans for more RS goodness in my collection, once I finally make up my mind on exactly what I want.

RS is honestly a great choice for a first doll. The only reason my first was BBB is because RS hadn't started up yet, and now even though Song might be a better fit for that character, I'm just too used to him as Sprite :)

    7. Horse like ears on a Dawn would be so cool.
I keep meaning to do a custom ear order heh. Oh! What about An with fantasy ears? He's one of the few who doesn't have a fantasy version right? Wu, Han and An deserve fantasy versions hah.

      I'd love to see those.

Though I admit, i'm rather taken by Ju with Mei ears. The wider elf ears really bring out her round faced cuteness I think. It suits her.

But i'm trying to be good this year and NOT order a load of resinsoul dolls.

    8. Some years ago I bought a Ming with the intetion to mod him into an imp. I quickly realized that if was going to do a lot of work on him anyway I might as well start with getting the joints to work in a way that worked for me. I got started, but then life happened with other projects and a big move and the poor thing ended up packed up in pieces in small box.
I recently dug him back out and strung him to find that the elbow and shoulder mods are more or less done and I had goten further on the thighs than I remembered. I don't know when I will get back to the project properly, he still need some fixing up and then he needs wings, new horns and a tail, but here is his current state.

    9. Just seeing your Ming @Lilith makes me miss the one I had years ago! Mine was in the light tan and posed like a dream compared to my other terrible rs/bbb floppy dolls. (My ws Jun nearly drove me to tears, lol, as he was the floppiest most collapsible doll I ever and and have ever seen since.) Any wats, I look forward to seeing your mod complete as it sounds like an amazing project!

    10. ooo what'd you do to his elbows? Those double jointed wierd cups drive me INSANE

    11. @pepperonipizza Thank you, it may take som time before I get it done, but it feels good to have him out and strung again. I will make sure to post new pictures when there is something worth showing.

@purple_monkfish Well this will be slightly technical, but there are two main problems with the joints in this doll. The first is exaggerated "locks" that makes inbetween poses impossible (mainly in the shoulders, in this doll, the locks in the knees do have a function when he stands with bent legs). The second problem is inbalanced joints and just about every joint have that problem to some extent.
The elbow cups -though a bit unconventional- had a pretty good outside shape that could potentially work, but the inside had too much room and that caused the elastic to shift inside the joint, causing the pivot point to move and joint to want to snap into it's extreeme positions. I added epoxy putty to the inside to narrow and reshape the channel and I also closed the slit slightly. This makes the joint have a little smaller range, but it moves smoothly and will stay in whatever position I leave it. I may be able to get the full range back with some aditional tweaking, but I may not bother, it works pretty well as it is now.

This is the only Resinsoul doll I own, but when I read up on what problems and workarounds other people have mentioned a common one seem to be restringing with thicker elastic to improve the behavior of the joints. That will essentially do the same thing as a narrower channel in that it moves the pivot point closer to the center of the joint. This mod simply makes it more controlled.
Most of the joints do have this problem, but not to the same extent and the size of the channels vary a lot, making it impossible to fix everything with just one solution.

    12. Interesting. I have serious trouble wrapping my head around how doll engineering works but I keep wanting to fix a few of my dolls. My Ming has absolutely frustrating elbows, the little cup just spins pointlessly and even thicker strings and such didn't help much. I can get him to stand fine with his legs straight but bent takes a bit more careful effort, still, it's doable, but the arms.. arghh the arms.
I also have a mirodoll hybrid who's knees have some issue where the peanut pops out. I can't work out if the peanut is too BIG or too small for the socket but it's SO annoying.

I vastly prefer the engineering of the Tang body, those elbow joints work far better imo. I mean yes they still like to pull inward but they seem to be more stable than the cups.

So did you end up sanding off the locks completely or just reducing them?

      • x 1
    13. I have been doing some BJD sculpting as well as other types of dolls in the past, so I have some previous experience with the engineering of joints. The main thing to pay attention to (in my experience and opinion) is the distance the elastic have to travel through the joint. The elastic will always strive to contract, meaning that if the elastic have to stretch to extend the joint, the joint will fold when threre is nothing to hold it out.

The thighs and hips of Ming seem to be enginered with human legs in mind and are made to favor a straight position. Great for human legs as it makes the doll stand sturdily, not great for legs that needs a different angle to make sense, such as the Ming goat legs. I reshaped the socket to instead favor an angle that worked for what I wanted. Then I built up the inside of the slits to get the pivot point right. The joint still need some work, but it's on the right track.

The locks in the shoulders does seem to be put in place as a workaround for an unbalanced joint. I obviously don't know the original sculptors reasons, but it could simply be a matter of not having the time to fix the joint properly, these dolls would not have been as affordable as they are without a few corners being cut.
I started by sanding off the locks entirely, with them in place the joint would never work as a balanced ball joint. I then reshaped the shoulder joint until it was as round as I could get it and reshaped the socket to match. Then I built up the inside of the shoulder ball with epoxy until the pivot point was where it needed to be.

    14. @Lillith Wow, that's really cool. It always amazes me how people like you figure out all this engineering stuff. Your boy is looking great as well!

I haven't posted pictures of Nimuel/Lionel in a while, so here's my merboy hangin' cool in the kitchen.

    15. Thank you. Lionel looks great too. I like how the subdued colors in his face up plays against his vibrant colored ears, it's a nice contrast.

    16. My faceup artist, tjkardynal, really did an amazing job of fading his face scales into his skintone. His is definitely one of my favorites.

    17. Just curious if anyone have ordered Bobobie Emily? Also what experience with Bobobie do you have?

I've never owned a Bobobie doll but not to many days ago out of curiousity I visited their site to see if they had any new releases. A bit disappointed to see that Tony and Tiah were not there, but their new girl Emily caught my eye and I'm excited about their new release. Her body is super adorable too :kitty2

Her sculpt is something I would not usually care for but lately I've had this Alice in Wonderland/ Gothic and Lolita/ Vampire/ Antique looking doll phase. When I was a kid I owned 2 porcelain dolls, and thinking back on that made me think of Emily. She kind of reminds me of an antique doll and I've decided that I'm going to have to order her oneday. When I don't know yet because I don't know if I want to order too much of doll stuff during the Coronavirus. Don't know if I'm worrying too much about ordering dolls from abroad.

    18. I got my twilight today! Soooooo excited for her! She wasn't blushed how I thought she would be, but I still love her. Gotta restring her to cuz she is super super kicky. I'll probably give her a hot glue sued to. though not sure how I'm going to without restringing her. How is everyone else getting their wigs to sit so perfectly with her elf ears? The wig I have on her in her pics is the only one that even remotely fits. I'm going to have to make a custom one just like for my Ju.

Here's her box opening if anyone is curious: /threads/resinsoul-twilight-doll-nudity.820396/

    19. @lividdarkangel To be perfectly honest, the wig I got was too big anyway, so I figured I'd just cut slits for ears into it since I didn't forsee getting a larger doll anytime soon. It's pretty imperfect though still.

    20. my twilight head arrived! She's gorgeous.
Of course she's gonna be without abody for a while but oh well.

    21. Sorry for the delay in replying - my internet connection is very patchy

Thank you :) I'm hoping to find one in the Marketplace, so it's good to know one can't be too indecisive!

Thank you - the poseability is one of the things I worry about, it's definitely tricky to try and buy s thing like this online without handling it.

Cheers - I will look up Doll Leaves next. your comment on not beint able to find clothes is actually kinda helpful. That's the part of the hobby I'm excited about, and am considering setting up a little business to justify getting a doll, so that would actually be a plus if there's a need for more things available.

Thank you! Not to be too serious, but part of me worries then thst it might be a labour rights thing - worse paid employees, or fewer safety regulations. But I definitely don't want to be paying more for status, although I am ok to pay more for quality. Thank yoy also for insight on poseability from several companies - Im still learning. I guess you need to own some dolls to know how fernickity poses you like to use, but I def do not want a doll that needs modification out of the box.

Awesome to know - although I think I'm a bit too inexperienced to play around with custom options. Fast shipping is good though; I don't want to wait like half a year to get going. That might be something I'm up for when I'm "in the hobby" in future but not when starting out.

Thank you for the reassurance :) it's definitely good to hear that as a collector with a wide range of dolls, they stand up to comparison. I really admire the photorealistic photos some artists take and am hoping to learn how to do this, so poseability is a factor; but it's good to hear that they are ok at this.

Thank you once again everyone, & hope to be joining you in this thread again soon with a doll of my own x

    22. I'm newer to bjds, but I find resinsoul amazing for the price. I had a Mi, but I ended up trading her because I'm wanting to focus of MSDs and smaller. I've been eyeing the gorgeous Xun sculpt lately. Does anyone have pictures of her? Have people received theirs?

Also I love seeing all the posts about customs and mods. I feel like resinsoul are perfect for modding and customizing as it's not a huge panic about money lost if the mod is imperfect.

    23. Could I request some Song spam from you lovely people? :)

I've wanted a Song ever since I joined the hobby over 8 years ago, but I've just never bought one! I'm wondering if 2020 might be the year to do that, lol.

      • x 2
    24. I just put in my first payment for two bodies for floating heads. Whoop.

      Song spam you say?

This is Lyric, my song GIRL heh.

    25. Could I bug y’all for a moment and ask those with Xun what size eyes & wig she uses? Thank you in advance!

      • x 1
    26. Could anyone tell me if Resinsoul/Bobobie sell heads alone, or if you can only buy full dolls?
I'm planning on buying a Rong, and I'd like to take the chance to maybe grab a head that could fit a mirodoll body I have on hand (since the head it came with is... bad. Very bad) but I don't see an option for heads alone, even though they do sell bodies on their own...

    27. @Tagath You're probably fine just ordering a head- you'll just have to email directly! Resinsoul has done weirder upon request.

      • x 1
    28. Gorgeous! is that the default body?

    29. you can definitely order just heads, as well as individual parts. They're pretty cool about that.

as for Xun, if she's anything like Twilight with the big ol' noggin you're looking at 14mm -16mm eyes (14 is my preference as I feel 16 are a bit buggy) and a 7 inch wig (so 6-7 OR 7-8 should fit depending on preference. )

@AlchemicCandy she's on the Mei single jointed female body.

    30. Lyric is fabulous, @purple_monkfish ! I love her outfit (and that tiny sword/dagger).

Here's my Song (also in sky blue) with their baby (dyed ResinSoul Yu):
They're on the double-jointed Wu body instead of the standard Song body, and have jointed hands in this picture.

    31. Hi, Im thinking I'm going to order a Ming soon and I'm trying to purchase his wig since I always buy the wig and eyes before I get the doll. On Resinsoul his head is listed as 17cm, but many other sources have it listed as 18.5cm? So which is it? What size wig does he take? And whats the best eye size for him for that matter? 14mm? Thanks in advance!

    32. My Ming wears a 7-8 size wig which is slightly big because it's a hard cap rather than stretchy, but i'd imagine a 6-7 of the same style would have been too small.

14mm are definitely the best size for the resinsoul msd, they come with I think 16mm by default which always feel just a tad too large. 14mm usually looks better to my eye. I think ALL of mine have 14mm eyes in.

I can measure Ming's head later on if I can dig him out of the shelf. My dolls aren't practicing social distancing at all, they're all on top of one another lol.

    33. Thanks! That was really helpful. I found the wig I wanted and since it's a limited from Leekeworld, and they're already out of it, but I found one still at DDE I wanted to jump as soon as I could. I've wanted Ming for awhile but I didn't do the research yet as I figured it would still be awhile since I got him, but our tax refund was twice what my husband and I was expecting so I'm able to order him from my portion of the 'fun money' XD it's a nice surprise but I usually feel more prepared than this. Twilight did the same thing to me though, had no plans for a centaur and then *wham* limited! :doh

    34. Measured just above the ears the head of Ming is 18,5 cm so based on that a 7-8 inch wig would fit. His ears may get in the way if the wig has deep cap, though, so a smaller but stretchy wig may acctually work better, depending on style.
I use 14mm eyes for him.

    35. Beautiful eyes!

    36. Does anyone have owner photos of Xun? I just bought her from DDE as a birthday present to myself. Lol. She’ll be my first Resinsoul doll! I’m excited to see what they’re like!

    37. I love blue dolls... Yours looks great with the red hair!

    38. Not sure if this has been asked in this thread, but has anyone ordered a modded mini? I saw someone with a 4 armed 1/3 girl and was just absolutely blown away at how pretty she was and that RS accommodated custom mods like that.
(Currently in love with the Lan sculpt and maybe making some horrible, expensive plans :sneaky)

    39. I have a 4 armed Tang bodied boy.
and there's a 4 armed Rong around somewhere too.

      So yep, totally doable.

      • x 1
    40. I love four armed dolls, pictures?

    41. My Resinsoul Xun came in the mail today! She’s in their light tan skin color. I’ve already given her new eyes. I can’t wait to see who she becomes. ☺️

    42. @dxgirly congratulations on your new girl...she’s certainly lovely, even blank. I think that’s one of the most fascinating things about Resinsoul dolls...they can become absolutely anything, and make such perfect blank canvases! I love seeing what people do with them.:)

      • x 1
    43. Thanks! They're one of my oldest characters - apparently my teenaged self was onto something with them. Ten years later, I'm still into fantasy-colored redheaded elves. :XD:

    44. Hi all.
I was wondering if anyone has received their Dawn yet? Or if anyone knows the right sized wig to get for her. I can't seem to find any reliable info on it anywhere!

    45. I might be able to help a little since I own the sister sculpt Twilight. I measured directly behind the ears; she should be around 18cm or 7in.
As far as I can tell the body for Twilight/Dawn are exactly the same- just the face is different, so look up Twilight stuff until you see some Dawns out and about.

Granted, 'bout those ears. I got a huge wig myself (8-9 in) and cut a hole for the ears. It works decently.

      • x 1
    46. Okay, great. Thank you. My friend @Peppermint Hippo Got Twilight as well so maybe I can use hers as reference once she gets her back from our faceup artist.

Is the 8-9 wig really loose or do the ears keep it on well? If it isn't too much trouble, do you have a photo of her in the wig?

    47. Loose, though that's less of an issue with the ear holes. It currently stays decently, and it's relatively painless to put on. The biggest issue is moving the hair/styling to cover the cut edges. I don't have many great images on specifically the ear area, but here's what she looks like (with a cartoonishly large shirt, don't mind that. )

      [IMG][IMG]

      • x 3
    48. Awesome, thank you so much. I think that size looks good on her and I like that the hair covers her ears nicely.

      • x 2
    49. @Yukai No problem! I can't wait to see your Dawn, and hope you find the perfect wig for her!

    50. She is actually going to be a weird Franken-doll with Dawn's head and hands and then Zhen's body sans wings and tail. I'm super excited for her. The idea came from @Peppermint Hippo and her next doll that is a similar build. I'm excited for hers too!!!!

      • x 1
    51. Xun has a sweet little face, she reminds me of Ju with the really rounded soft features.

My ordered bodies one of them is gonna be Xun's body with Dawn's hands and Zhen's wings heh. She'll then have Twilight's head. Should be fun.

      • x 1
    52. @Yukai I asked my face up artist to try some wigs and check what size worked best on her. She says she couldn't get the 7-8 to stay on with her ears but the 6-7 worked perfectly fine and stayed on.

    53. I did my Xun’s faceup! I decided to name her Daisy. :)<3[IMG]

      • x 14
    54. Xun is cute!

    55. I finally got a new faceup for my 3yr old Jun and was pretty surprised when they came back.
I couldn’t get any outfits to work, it just all felt wrong on them... The doll had a much stronger presence and vibe, and I just couldn’t figure it out.
Then it hit me. The thing that felt wrong wasn’t the clothes, it was how I was seeing the doll.
Turns out, her character is actually transfeminine nonbinary.

So on top of a new faceup, she now has a new look, a stronger vibe, and a new name.
As such I’d like you all to meet Alice :)
I love her so much <3
Now I have to completely revamp her entire doll profile *_*

      • x 8
    56. She's so cute...and the new body is wow...from the photos on the site I didn't realize how big the bust was. And to add I love the faceup you did on her so amazing..my faceup skills are still so amateurish even after almost 10 yrs in the hobby.

It's been a long time since I've been active here and it's been equally long since I've had any new RS dolls. Er that is besides the Bobobie Charisma I ordered through DDE. Anyway I can't wait to receive my order it's been since December with the pandemic I'm trying to be patient but I've never had to wait this long buying direct for a resinsoul order..lol. Last response was April 17th..almost a month later and still no dolls...sigh.

      • x 2
    57. DDE use BBB don't they? Which means it always takes bloomin forever. They once said to me that getting a response from BBB was very much pot luck and sort of implied not to bother.

I paid off my direct rs order begining of the month and got confirmation but no indication of how long it may take. Usually Sun will say "it'll be 40 days" or something but not this time, so i'm assuming it's now a "it'll be done when it's done" sort of thing.

But Kitty, I hope your DDE order appears soon. That's a LONG wait for a resinsoul.

      • x 1
    58. Oh sorry clarification it was 2 separate orders, my DDE order arrived just fine, I think it was 3-4 months so pretty normal. I only go through DDE is if it's a Bobobie order and nothing custom requested, if it's a custom request for example Sprite head on RS body then I'll contact BBB. My other order was direct through RS and was a large order with special resin colors, etc and I placed that one in December. I sent Sun another message so we'll see. Then of course once it is shipped it will be an equally long wait with all the long mail times.

    59. I ordered from RS direct a couple weeks ago and was told it would be close to a two months wait.

    60. two months is doable. I hope it doesn't extend longer.
I don't think the postage situation is helping at all.

I've got two parcels that have disappeared into the ether here. One from china and one from the US and I'm not really sure what I can do at this point. Sellers just keep saying "wait"
