Resin Rose BJD Expo - The Convention April 15 -17th 2016, Portland Oregon Discussion

Apr 15, 2015

    1. As the panel coordinator this year, I'm really excited to announce that we've got some great panels forming.

@batchix has offered to share her hard cap wig making techniques which can be used to make soy and alpaca type wigs. The panel will be two parts over the course of two days and may require sign up in advance and an extra fee. (Signups will be prioritized to pre-registered members first.) Part One will include making a hard cap wig base. Then Part Two on Sunday, she will be presenting her techniques for making wigs from start to finish. The most important part of wig making the finishing, so we will be using faux fur for the sake of cost and speed of use. That way those in the panel can reach the best part and get hands on instruction and tips that will matter the most.

@TomB will be sharing his Photoshop magic, from some basics to compositing multiple photos to create a scene. He's shared some of his expertise here on DOA and has an interactive thread here. It is well worth checking out, and giving a go. The in person panel will go over many details on a large screen so you can see the process from start to finish.

@IHeartMantids has offered to do a panel on crafting well composed photos to work in a photostory, both with and without words. Then showing how to add words and make a photostory flow with basic tools. He also is considering doing a panel on cellphone doll photography in particular. You can see some of his cellphone work, including some rather harsh conditions that he worked around, as well as some of his favorite BJD shots here.

I will be doing a panel on line work in faceups using paint and a paint brush. Those pesky eyelashes and eyebrow hairs seem to be the nemesis of many, and I hope my tips will help folks out. I'll be providing paint, but brushes will be limited. You're welcome to bring your own brushes and heads to practice on. I highly prefer the Kafka 5/0 scriptliner available from Blick.

@glyndon has prepared a brilliant tooth modification panel, showing step by step how she carves out the inside of a head and creates a removable tooth part that is inserted to bring incredible dimension and change to a sculpt. Her panel will cover tools, materials, and the process in explicit detail. If there is additional interest, she may also cover eye closing additive modifications. Please let her know if this is something you would like to see!

In addition to panels and formal contests, there will be some fun games and challenges folks can participate in. We are organizing a dolly speed couture contest where entrants will create an outfit based on materials provided for the challenge in a limited amount of time. The contest will may be judged by committee and prizes may be awarded. Some more details will be coming soon, but part of the challenge is in the not knowing, much like Chopped.

There will also be a headband decoration station with ribbons and accessories. It will most likely be available all day for people to come and go as they please. At the same time, hot glue guns will be available and those that would like to try their hand and sueding their dolls are invited to do so.

    2. Some of our planned panels will have limited space, require assembly materials, or the like. As such, those who have preregistered for two or three day passes (as of March) for Resin Rose BJD Expo, will be receiving early sign-up emails for panels! This gives us an opportunity to move the schedule around to ensure that those panels with the most interest are placed in the largest classroom or that we have enough materials to go around.

    3. Panel info part two: we need YOU! :thumbup

We are actively looking for people interested in hosting panels. With three classrooms at our disposal Saturday and Sunday, which can seat between 20 and 45 people each, there's still plenty of room to share your expertise, sense of humor, or to arrange a meetup.

Have an idea? Want to host?
We'd love to hear from you! What kind of panels are you interested in? Would you like to host a panel? If so, please contact the Resin Rose BJD Expo directly at [email protected] with your proposal by February 28th. We are offering discounted table and pass rates as well as an exclusive goody bag to panelists as well as some other perks that are in the works. In your proposal include how many people you could host (two of our classrooms fit 20 people and the other fits 45 people), whether you would need advance sign ups or to charge for additional materials, what those materials would be and if you would be providing them (such as a doll sewing panel where dress fabric is provided by you, or where everybody would need to bring a pair of scissors), and whether or not you'd need any AV equipment such as a projector for a slideshow.

Want to host but can't afford to come?
If it is a hardship to purchase the discounted pass rate, we have two paid for badges that have been graciously donated to us that we would love to pass on to a panelist who would not otherwise be able to come. Please send [email protected] a message with your panel proposal (or proposals if you would like to host more than one) and let us know a little about yourself. Please note, that we cannot compensate for travel, food, or lodging expenses; however the badges are full weekend passes that include the Friday banquet dinner and all the other pre-registration perks. Please send in the proposals by February 28th so that we can respond by March 1st with our decision.

Suggestions we've gotten so far and what we're looking for:

Some panels that have already been suggested include alpaca processing (and fiber comparisons), as well as sock couture. Both are great ideas, but we need people willing to host them.

Other panels we'd love to see are sewing and pattern making tips for dolls, prop and set building, doll maintenance and body blushing, and how to save up and budget for dolls. Even games like bjd themed bingo, or a dolly crack hour where we can all titter together about optional parts and various doll endowments may be a welcome diversion.

      Airbrushing:
If there is a lot of interest in an airbrushing panel, I am open to bringing my airbrushing equipment and showing how my setup works. Including what is needed to get started, and how to consider bringing multi-taskers into the equipment you buy. My compressor is compatible with most homemade resin casting chambers, can also multi-task to fill car tires and basketballs, as well as run light duty air tools. Not everybody needs to buy the expensive mini airbrushing only compressors. There would be an interactive chance for everyone to try their hand at airbrushing. Since this is a lot of equipment to haul around and would require some special considerations (noise especially) I need to get an idea ahead of time of the interest in this sort of panel. Please feel free to PM me or post here if that is something you'd like to see. I'd need at least 10 people to sign up in advance before I can commit to this panel. (There would be no extra charge to attend.)

    4. Syntheic fiber wig styling! I can't lead it, but I would live to attend it!

    14. I am so not ready to deal with this. :ablah: Like, I'm excited, but I'm just not ready to actually...go to the event. I just don't have any of my dolls ready (I haven't even touched any of my dolls in months, have no idea what doll/dolls I want to bring), and I'm taking a class that requires me to read 1-2 philosophy books per week (Heidegger, Descartes, Kant, Ronell, etc), and just...lots of things going on.

    15. Resin Rose BJD attendees:
We're trying to get a head count on those who own a Haru Casting Adori and will be both ATTENDING and BRINGING the doll with them! We'd like to get a photo shoot with all the attending Adori!
If you're coming and also bringing along Adori please PM me!

    16. It feel like it jumped from six months away to two weeks away overnight.

    17. It did, and you can't convince me otherwise.

    18. I am super excited to go to my first BJD con. It's great this event is held in my hometown Portland, Oregon. I <3 Resin and can't believe I will get to meet so many of my idols in one place.

    19. I don't know where the time went! However, things are coming together and I'm very very excited for that.

Panels have been confirmed and set. The schedule has been finalized. And the contest prizes have been announced! Official contest details, panels and times, and schedule can all be found on the Resin Rose website under Programming. Programming - It's a big page, so we've also made a page just for the schedule for quick reference. Schedule

We've got some exciting things happening. In addition to our panel schedule being finalized, on Saturday @dollhausen will be sharing their photography skills with convention goers. You'll be able to get a photo of your doll taken in a very unique way. Please check out their website: Sander Dolls

I am late in sending them out, but the panel signups email will be going out very soon. If you can bring scissors, please do.

    20. Just to clarify, people won't be going home with a print. I'm shooting color negative film that afterwards I will send out to be developed (ironically enough by Citizen's Photo in Portland) then I'll be making traditional chromogenic prints in a color darkroom. I'll have model release sheets where I can get people's contact information (and information about their dolls) and will be sending them a print later in the size of their choice (either 8x10, 11x14, or 16x20). I'll bring some samples so people can see what the prints look like.

    21. My apologies! I'll correct that. Thank you for offering this really neat opportunity to those going to Resin Rose!

    22. Thus weekend, guys! And I decide to add a couch to my diorama now?

    23. I can't believe it's coming up so fast! I look forward to meeting all of you, especially the lovely organizers!

    24. I can't wait to meet everyone too!! It's going to be so much fun!

    25. We've opened panel sign ups on the website. If you haven't done so, please fill out the form so we know how many people to expect. :D It isn't required to sign up in advance, but it will speed up the process. *edit* It helps if I post the link: Panel Signups

    26. I wanted to confirm, for the swap spaces, sales will be allowed, correct? It won't only be for trading? Thanks. :)

    27. That is correct! Sales are totally okay (I love a good barter, though).

    28. Correct!

Also, everybody may come to shop, but only those who have paid for a swap space may sell. :kitty2

    30. I really wish I could go. Sadly, things have shaken out and I'm not going to be able to attend after all. I hope everyone has a wonderful time! I'm viewing my pre-registration as a donation to the future success of the convention. :D I want to see Resin Rose happen again in future years!

    31. Sorry you can't make it Kiya :(

The fun is about the start in a few hours!! So excited and anxious!!!!

    32. Everyone, please post tons of photos and stories!

    33. Did you open a Flickr photo page, Lori??

    34. I, for one, had a fantastic time, prize-winning aside. No, really, thank you to everyone who organized and helped! I can't wait for next year already!

    35. Soooo tiiiired. Happy, though. Huge thanks to everyone that took the time to join us!

    36. I took a ton of photos and once I recover from out 11 hours drive home I'll get a flickr with them all set up.

    37. Thank you everyone for coming to support our event :) I have tons of photos to share but will have them up after a couple days of recouping!! It was an amazing weekend. Can't wait until next year!!!!!

    38. It was so nice to meet some of you! I had a great time walking around and generally lurking- I know I met @batchix, @Raesha, @Mirror_ada and @Sicktress (and others whose usernames I am not sure of!) and all were so lovely! :dance I was the wandering person wearing a striped dress. Maite and Sindri both got new dresses, a book and a candle holder, and Sindri got some blue glittery horns!

    39. And the album is up!
      https://www.flickr.com/gp/127323489@N06/W59d6i
Most photos are just raw from the camera, though I did g through and blur faces where I found them if I didn't know if the person was OK with having their photo taken.
if for whatever reason there is a picture including you, your doll, or any merchandise (vendors) that you wish to not be displayed please let me know and I will remove it from the album!
109 pictures total, and that isn't counting what I took on my cell.
