Resin Rose BJD Expo 2017: Discourse and excitement

Aug 27, 2016

    1. Well, the new one is definitely both nicer and safer than driving the old one around... but yeah, it was a bit of a cramp in things until we came back into some unexpected money to get everything paid off with.

    2. Oh my. Do I have some news for all of you...
We extended Early Bird registration rates through the end of March (that's today!).

We are hosting an art contest to create a BJD themed coloring book. You can get the full details here, but there Day Passes, and show exclusive merchandise in the prize bag.

We are going to be doing a formal announcement and registry for contests soon. I am mentioning it now because we are going to cancel contests that don't get at least 5 people wanting to compete. Face-ups, photography, costuming, and props are going to be up for vote to keep or can. I will update on that with links once it is underway.

We had wigs made especially for Resin Rose 2017! There are two styles, each with unique coloring to match the black-n-green theme we have for this year. (I have already bought one of each) You can find out more about those over here.

The ever amazing Batchix was so kind as to create a new doll head just for us! It is meant for 1/3 size bodies and has the most adorable pointed ears. We are processing photos of that now, so expect another update soon.

      Our Vendor List has grown!

      Sponsor list:
Jamie's BJD Prop Shop- 1X Paper Sakura Doll
      Kayke Doll- 1X BJD Rat
Synthetic Ephemera- 1X F60 head, 1 MNF head and 1 Pukifee Faceplate
      Beachgirlnikita- 1X Doll
Denver Doll- huge goody box full of wigs, eyes, clothing, props and a pullip!
Angel Toast- 1x Face up voucher

Volks USA- 1 dress set and wig.
      Kaleidoscope BJD Wear- 1 jacket.

    3. An exclusive Batchix head! Oh gosh, I definitely look forward to seeing pictures of that one go up...

I'm excited about the contests, though I don't know how many I'll be able to put together a good entry for... But I know my sister is going to be interested in the costuming one at least-- and I'm working on a coloring book page right now. (well, I keep going back and forth between two... but it's really fun to have a pre-convention contest, and I LOVE the idea of then having special convention coloring pages. Gives anyone who routinely carries art supplies with them something to do while resting between panels and chatting with people)

    4. There is no limit to how many entries you can put in for the coloring contest but you can only win 1 prize :)

    5. I just saw the other contests go up on the website, when I was trying to look something up for my sister, and I'm so excited... I am not yet sure if I'm going to be entering the face-up contest. I've got a floating head who's a perfect canvas, he just doesn't have a stand... or if I feel like Marigold turns out well when I paint her up, I might want to enter her... Well, anyway, I'm really excited over all of them even if I'm not ready to commit to entering myself.

I am pretty sure my sister will want to enter the costume contest, though. She'd been planning on doing at least one version of Princess Zelda.

Also, quick question-- what's the price of the raffle tickets? On the website it just says it's the same as last year, but last year we weren't in the area, so we've got no idea.

    6. It's divided into tiers, depending on the value of the prize pool. $1, $2, and $5, I believe. We also have package discounts for multiple tickets purchased at once, but I do not remember the prices on those.

    7. So excited for the contests. I've been planning and working on my faceup entry for the past couple of months now. n_n,

    8. Oop. I was incorrect. Raffle tickets are $1, $3, and $5.

    9. One, three, and five. Sounds pretty good-- we've both got our eyes on some of the prizes in the various categories, so we'll definitely be purchasing some. Possibly going in on the package discount for tickets, but we'll see. It's good to know the regular prices ahead of time.

And now... I'm just waiting for the coloring page contest results to go up. (well, and working on designing and crafting, of course-- that never stops)

    10. We would like to announce the winners of our coloring book contest. We will contact the winners via email by the end of the day.

Congrats to all our winners and honorable mentions. Thank you to everyone who entered. If you submitted a coloring book page it will be in our coloring book that will be available for free at Resin Rose 2017.

    11. Two questions about the contests-- Is there a set time that dolls will be out for the costume/faceup contests or does the judging go on over the course of the event? My sister is keen to enter the costuming contest but also wants her girl to be able to model at our table for part of the con, so I want to let her know what to expect out of that. (and it would help me to know which doll I would want to enter in the faceup contest, based on which dolls we want modeling at the table)

The other question was about the prop contest-- our other sibling has been working on props and would be keen to enter, but can't make it to the convention. They're too honest to have one of us take the prop and enter it under our names and attend the banquet in their stead, so I promised I'd ask for clarification on the rules surrounding that. Would a family member be able to pick up a prize, or would they just be entering to exhibit but not to win-- rather, is it okay to enter a prop out of a desire to show off one's skills and vary the entries on display without being up for a prize?

Hopefully we'll all be able to sign up. I'm definitely excited to do my best on the faceup contest, but I haven't yet picked out my model. Still, that's one definite entry for one contest!

    12. We do not have specific times for drop off and pick up yet. There will be a drop off time (probably around 10-11am). Then people will have all day to view your entry and vote. Pick up time will probably be around 5pm. This will happen on both Saturday and Sunday. You can take your entry sooner but just know that you may not get as many votes.

You have to be at the show to participate in the contests and prizes. The attendee must be at the closing ceremonies to claim their prize. You can display your sister's prop but it would not be eligible to win a prize.

    13. Okay, thanks so much for the quick answers!

    14. I just got a fresh list of fully confirmed vendors for all of you to see...

    15. I just registered and booked the hotel for all 3 days! It'll be our first time and we can't wait!

    16. Debating on heading down to check it out, hopefully will be able to this year. Heard positive things about it so I'm hoping that I'll be able to take the train down.

    17. The closer we get the more excited I become. This year is panning out to be amazing. Our vendor hall turn out is beyond words. The only problem I am having setting up panels this year is the fact I want to attend all of them and I know that I can't.

    18. I know what you mean about the panels-- I'm going to have to work it out with my sister as to who gets to attend which panels and who's got to stay with the table when. (though I'm definitely very excited about the table, too-- and very excited about slipping away from it to shop around. A couple of my favorite shops and doll artists are going to be there and I'm already having moments of disbelief that I'm going to be in the same vendor hall!)

    19. @Riren Hope you are able to make it down for the show :)

    20. Super excited to have a table and be co hosting the Faceup Panel :chibi can't wait to see everyone~!!

    21. I'm hoping to make it over from the dealer's hall to the faceup panel!

My only problem is that I can't seem to get the entry forms for contests to work with my laptop. I'm pretty sure the problem is on my end since it's not the first time I've been the only one to have a similar issue... I'll see if I can't get it to work on a different computer, might work out better that way.

I need to get a move-on on Vince's costume... and get some more jewelry made.

    22. You can just email us at [email protected] with what contests you'll be participating in and I can fill out the form for you.

    23. Ah, excellent-- I'll make sure I get my sister's info too, or I'll make sure she has all the relevant contest info to email about what she'll participate in.

    24. We only have 11 more seats for our Friday night Meet and Greet Dinner. This will put us at max capacity of 90 people for the 3-day passes. We will not be able to add more after this due to the space the dinner is being held in. So get your passes while you can at-
      Member Registration

Once they are sold out, we will not be able to add anymore.
We will have unlimited 2-day and 1 day passes available.

We want to take this time to remind you we have our contest sign ups still open!
Each contest is free to enter but needs a minimum of 5 pre registered contestants to happen with walk in entries welcome.
      Contest Info
If you have problems with the form, just email us this info: Legal Name, Contact Email, if you preregistering or registering at the door, and what contest(s) you would like to participate in (couture speed race, faceup, costume, prop and/or photo)

      Our email is [email protected]

    25. Oh my gosh, I'm so excited! Today is my birthday, and my husband just told me he bought us 3 day passes!!! :XD: I'm so blown away, and SO so so excited! I never thought we'd be able to go, and now I'm scrambling to make plans! He even got me a spot in the Swap Meet! Yay! I can't wait :D

    26. @InkyBear Happy birthday! We really look forward to seeing you.
(Personally, I am absurdly pleased that we get to be part of your birthday celebrations.)

    27. Thank you :D Now I just have to decide who to bring. On one the one hand I'd like to bring my most finished since I think I'd be kind of embarrassed with my half-finished dolls, but on the other hand I'd like to bring the more blank ones in case I find something to buy for them! Decisions, decisions! Since I'll be flying I really want to only bring 1 or 2...

    28. @InkyBear Happy birthday! And ah yes, with having to fly, I can see how it's a struggle between showing off a more complete doll, or taking a less finished one shopping... Maybe one most finished doll and one who's in need of a key piece or two that you can look for?

    29. @InkyBear I've found that bringing just heads helps loads with wigs and eyes, if you don't feel like lugging around too much resin. Maybe having just the measurements might help. Plus, there's bound to be someone willing to offer up a doll for modeling if they have a similar sized doll.

    30. I'm really excited-- I just registered, and this will be my first doll convention! Thanks for hosting this!

    32. Oh wow, what a great line up! I'm getting excited to attend!

    33. Wow, so many amazing vendors :D I'm so excited! And I love the idea of just bringing a few floating heads that could do with some upgraded eyes or wigs. I think that might be the best course of action-2 full dolls, one more complete and the other a WIP, and a few floating heads to test things out on. Now to tackle how best to organize for the swap meet :whee:

I know it's still over a month away, but I'm seriously in pins and needles in excitement!!

    34. I usually bring floating feet as well, to try on shoes :)

    35. Our room block is now sold out at the Monarch. The hotel is still offering the discount code if you call. They do have some non standard rooms available but the 2 queen bedrooms are completely sold out. The code is now disabled online. The hotel phone number is: toll free at 800-492-8700 or the hotel directly at 503-652-1515. The code is: RRBJD17

Here are a couple other hotels nearby if you do need 2 queen beds-

Courtyard- 9300 SE Sunnybrook Blvd, Clackamas, OR 97015 (directly behind the Monarch) 1-503-652-2900

Days Inn 9717 SE Sunnyside Rd, Clackamas, OR 97015 (503) 654-1699 (across the freeway)

    36. Bringing floating feet is a smart idea.

I'm just bringing as many as I can carry-- which, considering I'm driving over from about an hour away and toting everything for a vendor table anyway, should be the whole resin crew, plus some off-topic plastic cats. A couple of them do need to look for eyes...

    37. Since the show is almost on us, I wanna ask again...who's bringing dolls in costume and what game/character did you choose?

For myself, I have Fallout and Elder Scrolls fan dolls already, so they are an easy choice. I also have a Vincent Valentine head. I didn't style him as a character doll, O just got him because pretty, but I may well do some last-minute costuming for him.

    38. No costumed dolls for me, sigh. I'd love to, but it's just a bit beyond my skills. I'm looking forward to seeing everyone else's though!

I am bringing two dolls, well, three. Biggest is msd, so not a hardship by any means. They already have started their shopping lists! And to my dismay, the lists are getting longer each day.

I am excited to attend, but also have the strong urge to hide in a corner. :aninja:

    39. @kurogane I feel you on the corner hiding urge. Alas, I may not. If you do, though, I may have to stop in and hide with you a time or two to keep grounded.

    40. @glyndon I would welcome the company. :whee: I can handle crowds if I'm anonymous like Disneyland, just an other tourist doing my own thing. However, Conventions are different, I might need to talk to other people! Which is a good thing as I need to make local dolly connections. Time to come out of the shell. :sweat

    41. Sadly no dolls in costume for me. If I'd known we were attending sooner I think I would have at least tried for one of the contests, but since I don't know much about video games maybe I was just a lost cause from the start :XD: Still, it'll be fun to see how creative other people have been!

    42. Between focusing on stuff for our table and being sick for about a month, I've had to scrap Vince's costume, sadly-- it was simple but it's just time I need to devote to other things. So, I'm bringing four uncostumed dolls. And possibly a few that are off-topic for the forum, to look for eyes and props and such.

My sister's girl will be Zelda, though.

    43. If I can get up the energy in time I think I'll have two of my dolls dresses up as Princess Daisy and Luigi. Sadly the only real video games I've ever played are Mario Party (the original) and DDR.:sweat

    44. I have an update on our contests! As of today we have enough interested parties to guarantee our Faceup, Costuming, Prop-craft, and Photo Contests will be held! The Couture Speed Race needs only one more interested party. I'm delighted! I cannot wait to see what all of you come up with.
And, keep in mind, that minimum is just to cement that we are holding the contests. Walk-in entries are absolutely welcome. Even so, if you want to register for a contest early, or just look over the details you can find all that information here.

    45. Yes! I just tracked down some of those Mountain Dew replica lip balms to scatter around the Gamer Den photo set! Gotta stay awake when you're marathoning ESO.

    46. Only a month between us and the con! So close, I can't wait!

    47. Gotta love those little Mountain Dew glosses... I'm so looking forward to seeing that gamer den!

Oof, there's still so much left to do and it's so close... I'm freaking out a little but also just very excited.

    48. So exciting! It's getting so close! I wish I knew what to expect or what everything is going to be like :XD: I've only been to a few BJD cons, but I sort of hope it's like GoGaDoll that was held in San Francisco a few years back (if anyone is familiar with it).

    49. I can't believe Resin Rose is getting so close!!! 36 days away.

We've sold out of the 3-day passes that were limited to 90 seats for the dinner.
We still have an unlimited amount of 2-day and 1-day passes left. If you pre-register you will receive a Resin Rose eco-tote (while supplies last)

@InkyBear I loved Dollectable/Gogadoll. I went to all three and had the greatest time :) They were great shows and we hope we live up to your expectations.

    50. @InkyBear It was the great memories of Gogadoll that enticed me into helping with Resin Rose in the first place!

    51. I really can't wait! I'm bringing my mom along (hoping she'll become more interested in bjds) It'll be nice to see people I've only ever spoken to online.:3nodding:

    52. Our vendor map is now up on our website-

    53. Oh my, less than two weeks away. I still have sewing to do. And here I thought I was so prepared this year.
Anyway, I just learned something that I wanted to share here. Player One, the head Batchix (I love this woman, she is amazing) made for Resin Rose this year, was confirmed On Topic for DoA as of July 13th!

Sooooooo, if you manage to snap up one of the in-stock heads at the show (I think there are two left?) or join the second preorder we have running now through the event, you can spam her here to your heart's content!

    54. It's getting close! I still have 2 faceups, sewing, and some other crafting to do. With this coming heat wave I'm not certain I'll get it all done.

    55. I've got so much left to do... I have a plan for some of it, at least.

    56. Okay folks, I know this is a really lame question, but how does everyone whose planning to sell in the Swap tag their items? I don't want to put stickers on the clothing since that could damage it, but I also don't want to put things in bags either since I know people like to try things on their dolls and see it for themselves? Is verbal the best way? Except I know some people are shy about asking and might just pass on if they don't see any prices listed. Hmmm...am I overthinking this :frownyblush:

    57. I lay stuff in like-priced groups and sign that pile. My stuff tends to be one of four prices, though...

    58. The con is so close! I'm getting excited!
I'm busy making shopping and reminder lists of what to look for and what to do. I need lists as I get caught up and forget, then remember later when I'm home, lol.
