Resin Rose BJD Expo 2017: Discourse and excitement

Aug 27, 2016

    1. Resin Rose BJD Expo returns on August 11-13th, 2017.

I will not lie, the fact that we agreed on video games for our theme has me, personally, very excited. Excited enough that I volunteered myself to maintain this very discussion thread. I will absolutely be bringing back the Fallout inspired Blue's Bachelor Pad diorama, hopefully with improvements. Just documenting the building of the interactive photo sets would be enough to keep me hyped for the next twelve months.

      Important Things:
      When- August 11-13th 2017
Where- Monarch Hotel and Conference Center Clackamas, Oregon.
      Home- Resin Rose BJD Expo
      Tumblr- Resin Rose BJD Expo
Facebook- Resin Rose BJD Expo | Facebook
Instagram- Resin Rose (@resinrosebjdexpo) โ€ข Instagram photos and videos

So, what video game characters will your dolls be?

    2. Ah I don't know if I'll be able to go, but... I'd dress Nate up in Animal Crossing inspired gear since that's his favorite game :D

    3. Has anyone from the northeast US traveled across the country to go? It could be a cool trip. Hmmmmm.

    4. @mermaids You could always make the accessories and post photos to send him in spirit. While I would love to see you there, you don't have to go to participate.

@Wolfie Pie We're a year out, so you have time to plan. We had people from all over last year, from Florida to France.

    5. @glyndon Oh, that's really cool! I will have to see if I can swing the trip.

    6. Definitely interested!

    7. So excited to see that this is in the PDX area! Can't wait :D

    8. if I could join I would have my dolls dressed up in outfits inspired by my favorite anime, Akame Ga Kill, I would probably recreate akames, mines, esdeaths, or shelles outfits I think they are darling

    9. So exited for this! If I do make to the con next year, I plan on bringing my RS Lian that I'm customizing into one of my WoW characters.

    10. @Akemi3167 That sounds like fun. I don't play WoW, myself, but I've seen enough to be very curious how it will translate into three dimensions.

    11. @glyndon You should take a look at the WoW customs thread on here; aaamazzing work!

Oh, quick question: what have the hours been from previous conventions? Just curious.

    12. @Akemi3167 The meet-n-greet dinner Friday night will be running between 6pm and 9pm. Friday is just early set up for vendors and the mixer, no actual vendor hall. On the two full days, the vendor area runs about 9am to 6ish. Panels and activities would be running during those same hours (though that won't be formalized until we know how many of those we have). The swap on Saturday night opens about an hour after the vendor hall closes and runs until about 10pm (The swap was GREAT last year and I am really looking forward to that). Sunday will have shorter vendor/class hours, and lead into ending ceremonies and raffle draws instead of a swap.

    13. I have always wanted an excuse to go to Oregon! I want to go to a BJD convention, I love being able to allow my dolls to try things on and buy things without worrying about shipping.

    14. Super excited! Last year we weren't within con travel distance (missed it by that much!), but now that we're living in the area, the next Resin Rose is one of the things I am seriously looking forward to!

It'll take me about a year to pick and craft my favorite video game inspired costume idea for my dolls, there are about a million thoughts flitting about my brain already. Great theme!

    15. @Anneko It's for the best. Last year was lots of fun, but this year will be so much better. I am really excited to see what games you choose to represent.

    16. @glyndon Well... my sister is hoping to have built up enough stock to make a vendor table worth it, as she's the better seamstress, so if she has an idea for a male costume, one of my boys will probably wind up modeling for her... but we'll figure it out. She's excited about the theme (and about actually living near enough to a doll convention again). At anime conventions, you can put out a couple doll things and hope, but the people who stop and look aren't usually doll people-- and wandering the hall to do your own shopping, at a small con in a small city, you never find anything. So getting to wander a vendor hall that's all doll stuff... Well, I've got a year to save up for all the damage I'll be doing my wallet, haha.

Plus, I know it's too early to know much about workshops and panels, but oh boy, I'm excited over the prospect of those, too...

    17. @Anneko I hope she can be a vendor! More selection is always better. What does your sister make (assuming clothes, because seamstress, but what type)?
I am really excited about panels this year! Partially because I love workshops and partially because I'm in charge of talent scouting this year. I am stoked about the prop dessert making that is already lined up, but that's just the start... [As an aside, If anyone has ideas for panels or has interest in doing one, let me know!]

    18. @glyndon My sister does clothes and jewelry-- mostly for slim mini girls, but between everyone in my family, she's able to try sewing for regular MSD, slim mini boys, Yos, and she's got access to a mini Machina if she feels ambitious (plus a variety of OT dolls). She tends to go big and costume-y and intricate, which means having a whole year to make things is great, since her projects are so time-consuming (Well, with the jewelry she tends to just churn things out). She's also made pants with pockets for her girl.

I might split a table with her, since we usually work together at cons, the only difference being at most cons, she's selling geek jewelry to full-sized humans. I sew simpler things, shape-wise, but do a lot of hand-embroidery, and I like doing little props and accessories. And a table is definitely more affordable if we're splitting it...

(No ideas for panels-- or at least, nothing that I feel I could contribute to. But a dessert-making workshop sounds like so much fun! Definitely something I'd want to do, but then, if we get a table, we'll have to work out a schedule as to who mans it and who goes off to look at things. I'm excited to learn to make new things, or to make things better, whether it's improving a sewing skill, making a prop, building a diorama, taking better photographs, or trying wigmaking... there's just no such thing as a bad workshop in my opinion!)

    19. @Anneko You had me at "jewelry"! Doll jewelry is my biggest personal weakness, I cannot get enough of it. For my own selfish desires, I would love to see you two with a table. Our treasurer, @MysteryAya, is in charge of vendors and I know she has some shared table specials going on this year (plus she's known for working out layaway plans).

    20. Yes, feel free to contact me through our website or PM if you have any questions about being a vendor. We do have layaway plans as well :)

I'll also be doing the deco dessert panel (sooooo nervous but excited)!

    21. Ah, I'm so excited! Once we get the chance to properly confer between ourselves, I'll hop on the website.

Speaking of much-desired workshops, though, while I was talking with my sister about what we're looking forward to, she mentioned any kind of faceup workshop with a focus on freckles (or eyelashes or just super-fine details in general). If not a full workshop-workshop, a panel where more seasoned faceup artists could just give tips and tricks.

    22. Thank you for the information!

    23. I'm not sure if our application went through (a, when I submitted I seemed to be having some trouble with it... I'm excited, but also kind of worried.

    24. I haven't received an email yet. Was it the preregistration or vendor application? You can also try emailing me directly at [email protected] . Sorry if the application gave you problems we'll have to look into it.

    25. It was a vendor application (plus one add-on), through the website itself. I was worried that either it would go through three times or it wouldn't go through at all, technology sometimes being what it is. I'll shoot you an email with the pertinent info, thank you!

EDIT: Unrelated question- we have badge ribbons that we give away at our shop at conventions-- should we bring those? We had a couple cons that didn't use badges (and I went to another where we weren't selling, that used wristbands instead of badges), so the ribbons were just taking up space, so I just thought I'd ask.

    26. I got your info. I will send you a reply email soon :)

We have used clip on badges the last two years. We need to buy badges for the next show but it will probably be similar.

    27. Thanks so much!

I'll get back to you on the particulars after I can confer with everybody-- con tables are a bit of a family business and I'm not the money guy. (I don't know if we're all attending or if it'll just be the two of us. Well, probably we'll bring our mom to look at all the dolls, and she might take over helping out if one of us is in a workshop, but yeah, two people behind the table is about what I expect it's going to be most of the time whether or not we convince the whole family to attend, and we'll just take turns stepping out to look at things)

    28. Sounds good :) Just email me with the details when you figure them out.

    29. the time has begun to start saving up for plane fare!

    30. @Minty Yay!!!!!

We have been having some problems with the forms on the website. If you have applied for a vendor spot or preregistered and haven't heard from us in 24 hours please email us at [email protected].

    31. Yes! My 1/3 scale PS4 controllers have arrived! Now I just need to get them painted-up for our Gamer Den photo set.

      • x 2
    32. Oh, I am excited for that! Even if it's a little large for my 1/4 scale boys, Vince would look fine as a kid in a 1/3 scale set, and it just sounds so cute/fun...

I'm just envisioning a lot of dolls toting around those lip glosses that look like tiny bottles of Mountain Dew... the ultimate tiny gamer fuel!

I'm considering dressing Vince as Scout from TF2... Like, I'd love to do something more ambitious, but I don't think my skills are there yet for some of the ideas I've had. But I already have some of the necessary fabric for Scout in my fabric stash. The headset would be the trickiest part, but I do think that props will be fun to figure out. (plus, that way my floating head can hang out with him as Spy-as-seen-in-Meet the Medic, if I really want to get into prop-making...)

    33. @Anneko I hadn't even thought of Mountain Dew chapstick! You are totally correct, we do need some.
(Also, my vote is YES on your prop making.)

    34. I am so excited for this. It will be my first year going, I definitely want to be there!

And a video game theme! I have NO idea what my dolls will look like but I am beyond excited to dress them up for this!

    35. I am so excited-- oh my gosh, that little kitty is so cute!

    36. I actually made the trip two or three years ago from MI, granted I have family to visit too, but it was well worth it! I would love to try and go this year again! Although traveling with a resin baby can be interesting if your flying, my poor lillycat girl had to be swabbed down a couple times! >///< haha!

    37. I still need to get on top of securing a table... I keep forgetting to get it done when I'm with the 'business' side of things! We might be doing a two-month layaway thing, if I can get the first payment done tomorrow and then the second half next month. I'll write myself a note about it.

I wish I could think of a single thing I could be helpful with when it comes to panels and workshops, but while I definitely love the DIY aspects of the hobby, I'm beginner-to-intermediate where most of them are concerned... there's nothing I can think of that I'm an expert on that's directly related to BJDs. I'd love to find ways to be helpful, though, if I can just figure out the best way I could be.

    38. @quietly-stuttered We hope you can make it again!!! I'm glad to hear that you had a great time at the last show you went to!!! <3

      @Anneko I sent you an email :)

    39. I've brought Shiwoo with me on multiple vacations haha. I just packed him in lots of soft stuff in my carry on bag.

    40. @MysteryAya thanks so much! Hopefully the first payment goes through okay. I'm definitely excited.

    56. Well, I've dropped off the face of the earth for a while, but I am still very excited about this (and I'll have to send you guys our final payment-- we had to replace our van before I managed to finish paying off the con table, which put that on the back burner, but everything's working out now, thankfully!)-- especially now that there's some info up on panels and workshops! Once I read there was one on digital sculpting, I thought I might be able to tempt another person into joining us for the con, so I'll find out tomorrow if I need to add an extra ticket when I make our final payment, then I'll get that to you.

    57. @Anneko Sounds great :) Sorry to hear about your van :(
