Repositioning fingers by heating and bending

Jan 19, 2005

    1. does this work with other parts of the body too?
      Say, foot soles??

    2. I did it on a bent joint in a leg. Worked perfectly! I used steam from a kettle.

    3. OMFG. this thread is pure win :D :D
I've been wondering where does all those show-middle-finger hands came from :D I shall try this when I get my extra yder hands >w< :fangirl:

    4. This is really good information to know! I'll get some extra hands in the future and see what fun positions I can do with them. :D

    5. I bought a pair of lovely shoes that she would NOT fit into, and I didn't want to give them up. If it weren't for those toes being so straight... So hey, if it can be done with fingers, why not toes?

These are Delf girl feet steamed to fit. Surely you can tell which is the before and after? :)

One of the toes on the left foot has a tiny crack underneath, though. :doh

    6. This is danged useful - I need to make a "pointing-to-slice-with-telekinesis" hand for Sylar. XD <3333

    7. Oh goody 8D I couldn't help but try this~
      My nanu needed a middlefinger-flashing hand x3
Soo, here's to share my experiment~:
I used boiling water 8D It was really easy, and there was no marks or anything on the resin afterwards ^__^''
I didn't completely bend the fingers toward the palm, 'cause I wanted it to be a kinda lazy gesture xD''
But this definitely opens oh so much opportunities 8D I need ta make a pointing finger from the other hand.

Oh, and the hand used was a CP Delf hand for boy number... 4, I think.

    8. I repositioned Noah's hands tonight. I grabbed the s-hook in a pair of pliers and held the hand over my stove's burner to get it to move. In the end his right pinky got that split in it from bending it around too much so I had to just kinda...leave that hand with what I had. I dont like the position of that one as much as I do his right..But..I'd rather not break his fingers off.

The before (pictured with a random delf hand) can be seen here for comparison. Both hands had the same pose.

But anyway- here's the end result of both hands.

    9. I think I just might try this out today.

The DZ 1/4 boy hands are anoying the crap outta me. They all look the same! D:

      EDIT:

      I did it! XD
The first hand was good. The second one not so much.

My main goal was to get rid of the DZ pinkie finger poke-your-eye-out-ness.

The first hand went into place nicely:
left: DZ normal hand, right: DZ repositioned hand

The second one not so much. A note for everyone: Don't use pliars on warm/bendy resin. They make indents. XP
Aaaand I broke his ring-finger off while bending it. And his pinkie has a stress crack.
But I'll just paint those indents and make them scars. *nods*

      And just for fun:

    10. ouch. that poor ring finger. Though I dun have a doll nor doll hands to experiment with, I found this tutorial so so useful when i eventually get a doll~~ XDD and the creative hands positions we all come up with is intriguing. :D

    11. OMG wolfie you totally just creeped me out

    12. I just used this method to fix some messed up parts on a MiniFee :0 My guess is that the body was strung before the resin had set completely, so the hooks on the feet were bent upwards, and the hollow part of the wrists were ovals instead of circles. I was surprised at how easily the resin bends, I had a small pot of nearly-boiling water, and after dipping the parts in for like 15 seconds they were completely pliable o_O So I was able to fix the pieces :3 I'm so glad this thread is here!! :aheartbea

I also heated up and altered an El grabby hand XD Haha. It just wasn't graceful enough. :B

    13. OK I know it's been asked a few times during this thread, but never answered, so...

Has anyone ever tried to alter the shape of a nose with heat? And if you did, then what kind of heat? Steam? Heat gun? Boiling water? hairdryer? Placing the whole head in an oven?

I would SO love to alter Sevvie's nose.. but I don't want his whole head to melt >_<

Also.. it looks like this can be done even with blush (and faceup?) applied?

    14. I dont think anyone has tried that, however I have heard of people using hairdryers to soften eye glue on the inside of the head....and then having the head warp from the heat. Im guessing it wouldnt be the greatest idea unless you want his head to look like that of a flattented plastic doll.

Generally sandpaper is used to mod things like noses. I dont think heating doll parts is going to end up being the new fix-all in the dolly fandom. Or at least I hope not....

    15. I just did this last week. I held the hands over steam from a teapot, and I could bend them very easily - no cracking. :)

Lucas now has Guitar Hero Hands!

I'm almost tempted at buying a ton of hands and making fun sets. I'd love an OK hand sign. :D

    16. Hehe I've been looking at spare hands as well.. Just in case something goes wrong.. or they didn't bend as I wanted them to or something... Also it's nice to be able to change them I guess...

    17. spamsama: that came out awesome! it looks so natural, too.

I'll be trying this in a little bit. I'm debating boiling water vs. steaming methods, though. is either one "better" than the other?

      edit: did it!

sorry for the craptasm of a picture. I don't have my own digital camera, so I used my cell phone camera. oh well, you get the point.

(middle doll is the one with the modded hand. yes, he's faceless and eyeless.) I used the boiling method after trying to steam it but failing to get the steam to go out of my kettle in only one concentrated direction. so I poured the boiling water into a mug, dipping the hand in and going from there. I kept the fingers submerged for only a few seconds before pulling it out, poking the fingers toward the desired position, then submerging again and repeating the poking. I would have liked the index finger to curl more, but no amount of poking was going to make that happen. D:

I did it while no one else was around, so I'm leaving my dolls in that position until someone says, "uh, why is Locutus flipping me off?" and yeah, that's a stuffed Opus with reindeer antlers in the background. :]

    18. I have done this with other dolls but trying it on a BJD scares me.

    19. Aw, poor Yukio!

Thanks, everyone for this thread! I am SO going to remedy my tan Lishe's pinky-of-doom business. I'd rather she have a closed fist, geez.

    20. Has anyone tried this on tiny hands? I want to give my Bbb Isabella cute gripping hands.

I think I'll just try it and post the results here ^^

      Edit:

      I did my tiny's hands!

It was really easy to do. I just put boiling water in a mug as suggested here, dipped the hand for 30 seconds and bent it into shape.

I only changed the hands slightly, I don't know if it's worth posting pictures.

    21. Hmmm...I think I may give this a try on Bella's right hand; her default index finger position is in a widespread & awkward pointing position that makes getting her hand thru sleeves pure hell, since the finger catches on everything. Steam and/or boiling water, huh? Gad...I hate trying this on a Limhwa...I'll just kill myself if I do damage.

    22. LOL I need to subscribe to this xD~

      I'd really like to mod all my dolls hands slightly xDD. My SD10 Volks girl especially. Shes supposed to be an older character and those sprayed out baba hands are not working for me D: Also DoD hands get annoying when every boy has the same hand, just in bigger sizes... and the DIM hands are an akward shape xD;;

Ahaha here we go hand modding~!

    23. Haha! This is my solution for the little pawny fair hands! It absolutely wont matter at all to me if they yellow or crack or anything, cause I don't like them anyway. But if I succeed, I will hopefully get a hand that doesn't look so much like a spoon! ...I'll just have to separate the fingers... :D

    24. I'm waking this up again as I'd very much like to know if anyone has tried this with french resin. I'm going to buy a Narae someday, and she's... well, she's going to display a certain finger every so often :sweat
I'd think that the resin was too fragile to do such a thing - but has anyone tried? I've searched high and low, but I couldn't find anything on the subject.

    25. Well can you buy an extra pair of hand from them? If you can I would suggest doing so before trying it out with her normal hands. If not then buy a new pair of hands from elsewhere, where the resin color is a match and make it that way.

    26. Hehe, I didn't intend to try with her normal hands if I were to do it myself - that'd be kinda dumb if something went wrong and she suddenly hadn't got hands to wear. :sweat I was more interested in hearing if anyone had tried this, if it's possible to do with the french resin - considering the differences between french and normal resin it might not react quite the same way to the treatment.
But maybe that's just me imagining things?

    27. mmkies waking this tread for a sorta noobish question...

after reading this i wondered if maybe it was possible to do this technique on other parts of a BJD's body.

maybe even on ones face maybe?

    28. I did this with the ears of a random AoD head that I got my hands on.

      [IMG][IMG]

I just held the head over the stovetop for a few seconds, then pressed the side of his head against the counter while the resin was pliable.

It did crack though, but meh...it got fixed:
Dont mind the rest of those mods hehe :sweat

    29. lol cool. I was wondering if one could mod an expression this way.... specifically lips.

    30. don't do this on puki hands... lol or at least be better planned then me I guess

Puki hands don' have a hook in them so I attached them to a metal end of a pen and held them over a kettle. The first bend went well, but after reheating them, the fingers went back into position and the second bend cracked them completely, took one finger almost completely off. Also, I wasn't paying attention to the bottoms of the hands and they got warped, but I just held them over the steam and they went back into position

So, the moral of the story is:

If you are going to bend them, do it in one go and be cautious of the bottom of the hands because they can be easily warped and will no longer fit on the arms.

      ^_^

    31. Probably not...The resin doesnt really move like clay or anything...You wouldnt be able to change the shape of something completely surrounded by more resin...Particularly something that you cant really grab and wiggle. If you want to change lip shape you'll probably just have to do it the right way and use sandpaper and/or epoxy. :sweat

    32. mmkies, thanks :3nodding:

    33. Just wanted to chime in with my two cents worth after finding this wonderful thread. :)

Today I used boiling water to bend the feet of my AoD MSD tanned boy doll. The resin did not change color at all. It took some minutes of boiling to soften them up enough, and I found wearing a dishwashing glove very handy to keep from scalding myself in the process.

My character doesn't wear shoes, let alone high heels, but I think this would work well for making normal feet into heeled feet, especially if one had the shoes around to make sure the feet had been bent enough.

My thanks to everyone who contributed and convinced me it was possible! I'm so happy I could do this--and for free, too!

    34. Wow, this is really great. (But how many times during 8 pages can you read "Can I do this on a head" or "does this work on feet"??? I wanted to scream!!!)

Basically this post has been a reviving. But still, this is awsome! Sadly, B&G doesn't sell spare hands to try this on.
Davey: "What do you mean 'sadly'!?"
~I think she's getting annoyed of the "ooooh, we could try this" things I've found~

    35. Wolfie you cracked me up - LOL!! this is a wonderful thread, maybe i'll try it on some elf ears and give one a funky bend or something ;)

    36. it gets rather rubbery actually...

I did a pair of latiblue girl hands a while ago and I was surprised at how flexible they got... i found running them under cool water helped them set faster....

Ill post pics of them as soon as i can take one <3

Im thinking of doing her feet soon... considering all she wears is heals... and its frustrating trying to get her to stand alone...

    37. mkay... so here they are! I finally got a couple pics! ignore my hand lol

a smoking hand and something a bit less static...

    38. Fantastsic job on your hands, youstolemysoul! So much more elegant. Think I'll try Limwha's funny index finger...will post pics if I don't break it off her hand.

    39. thank you so much!!

keep in mind, if you re-heat the fingers will pop back into their original position!! lol

    40. I've heat formed some PVC (vinyl), and it works quite well. To be sure it is evenly heated in order to avoid cracking, and to prevent any chance of burning, I heat it by submerging the piece in boiling water. It doesn't get really floppy or anything , but it's enough to bend into useful shapes.

I'm using this technique to create an entire robot doll from scratch (click for more info):

    41. I saw a couple of questions here about Narae hands. I recently got my narae and discovered the right "hand of doom" with three very pointy straight fingers. I wanted to bend them into more natural shape, so dipped in boiling water for 30 seconds at a time and bent gently. The resin did not become very pliable and I was terrified of breaking or damaging the resin, so I didnt push it. The fingers did bend slightly but when I am feeling braver I will try a little more.

    42. I searched the thread but couldn't find the answer, maybe someone knows...

I have a heat gun (Darice Heat Tool, to be exact) purchased for other purposes. I think it's intended for embossing, I can't remember. Is this something that would work for heating and reshaping resin without any problems? I imagine it would, but I kind of want to make sure before I try it...

    43. You are swe in the other forum?
Can you fix that to me then when i get a doll :D:D
I dont think i get what you mean in this topic xD

    44. The pictures wont show up!

    45. Because this thread was posted three years ago and the original poster has been banned from the forum. :|

    46. oh... are you making the face at me or him...

    47. Does steaming allow the resin to take its original shape?

    48. answered my own question. XD
I steamed my girl's face which had a dent on the nose and it worked. =D
The only evidence that she faceplanted is the chipped msc. =D

    49. I'm pretty sure it was meant for the other person. :sweat

Now that's a really cool fix. Good to know, thanks for sharing. :)

    50. i curled my doll's hand by accident when dyeing him, but it was great and it set quite well. the hand did keep springing back when it was still warm, so i had to cool it quickly.

    51. would love if someone else could post up pictures of examples if they've had a tried and true result!

      thanks!

    52. here's a picture of Klaus's hand after the dyeing process. it was originally a default DoC hand:

I used the boiling method to modify a spare pair of the new DoC girl hands to do the middle finger and a magic casting sort of hand - there's a few stress cracks, but it came out alright.

    54. Oh, I must do that <3
Dok has Syndactyly on both hands (smallest and ringfinger together) and I just hope I won't crack anything ^^'

Someone tried it with his DZ 72 hands? Especially the new, thinner ones?o__o

    55. I've tried this. I was surprised how bendy it was :O

    56. I tried this with spare Volks feet, trying to bend them into a heel shape. Even though I had them in boiling water for 10 minutes or more, and though they got a leeeeeeeeeeetle bit bendy, all I did was end up cracking off the four toes. Luckily, I figured out that I could insert a wire into teeny holes I drilled into both sides, and then I had toes I could position....I used it to make the toes on the feet wiggle when I made a little stopmotion....I'll post some pics soon when my computer stops hollering at me for taking 10 thousand pictures for that movie.
      ;D

Thank goodness they were spares, cause otherwise, I'd have been crying my little eyes out....

    57. Xacto the fingers apart first.

    58. Yes, thank you. I forgot to say that in my post.

    59. I don't want to seperate the fingers, I want to put them TOGETHER X'D
My Dok doesn't have seperated ones, the doll itself has at the moment, that's what I wanted to say |D~

However, thanks for the advice, even you misunderstood me :)

    60. Ah. Then the appropriate English would be, "My doll's character has syndactyly and I want to create that on the hands."

It really shouldn't take that much to smoosh two fingers together, and dependent upon the company, they may even make what you are looking for in an option hand.
