Raccoon Doll Discussion - Part 5

Mar 27, 2019

    1. I've just ordered Julia. She'll be my first normal skin Raccoon girl since Sarah and Mika, way back when he started. (Disembodied heads don't count.)

Somebody needs to place a vampire order to let Raccoon know people are interested in the genre. Won't be me this time around.

    2. Congrats on ordering Julia! She is a gorgeous sculpt.

    3. Congrats@vermontchick! I'll be looking forward to seeing Julia on the boards. I'm waiting for the elves to come back before I order anything else. I really want that Elf Nina. Not a huge fan on how they have done the fangs on the vampire Lara, so I'll not be dipping my foot in the water with this release.
Speaking of normal skin girls. A bit of playtime with my Nana

    4. Thanks @Patrice S and @JinCIncy. Ordering Julia makes up for having missed out on Actress Lara. I'm not a fan of the fangs on Vampire Lara, either. Maybe it's the faceup, but the fangs almost look painted on. I'd love to see the blank head sculpt.

Love your visitor to the glade Nana, @JinCIncy.<3

    5. Yes, the fangs looked painted on to me too, that was what bugged me about her @vermont chick .
On another note, I just noticed this morning that all the guys except Brandon and Elf Ron went basic and are included in the free shipping sale...โ€ฆโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€ฆ...UGHHHH...โ€ฆโ€ฆโ€ฆ..more temptation! I do love Robbie and I love Kai so much I wouldn't mind having another in a different resin color.

    6. hiya- does anybody got a grey skin raccoon and can show a pic in natural light without flash? think of getting a grey skin girl

    7. @JinCIncy your Nana is so lovely and I love the color of her gown. I noticed Kai was available and he is tempting.

    8. Kai is a gorgeous sculpt and I'm super pleased to have been able to get mine.

    9. Speaking of Kai...โ€ฆโ€ฆโ€ฆ.I do love him...โ€ฆโ€ฆ.

    10. The David sculpt is hella tempting to me but I'm trying to be good and not click buy. I've already bought more dolls than I intended this year and we're not even half-way through the year. And if I did buy him, I'd need to buy his partner and... the vicious cycle never ends.

    11. Yep I got one Soomin and Mate
Sorry canโ€™t post images from my phone :( took this photo outside with no flash. Iโ€™m really happy with the grey color, but sheโ€™s the first Iโ€™ve had so I donโ€™t know how it compares to other companies.

      • x 1
    12. Oh man, the grey skin is super nice. Don't do this to me. I have a terrible, terrible weakness for grey resin (I have 10 grey dolls).

    13. Haha honestly Iโ€™m surprised you donโ€™t have one already :wiggle

    14. I only recently got my Elf Kai 2nd hand. I have a Doll Rule. No doll comes home who isn't already an existing character. This, in theory, helps keep the horde numbers down. In theory.... Not sure how well that's working though. 11 years in the hobby and I have 56 dolls. That's roughly 5 dolls a year *cringes*.

    15. @JinCIncy - Love the natural face-up on your Kai.

@Iron_Dog - My Doll Rule is similar. Theoretically, no doll comes home to me unless I've sold a doll to make room. This is not to say it's working, because a big doll has been known to morph into two smaller dolls. I'm currently at 12 years in the hobby and 65 dolls, not counting the ones up for sale and those on order. I'm trying to keep the number under 75. Hah! Who am I fooling?

    16. You're not fooling anyone! This hobby is just too addictive to ever stop! Way back at the beginning I told myself that 25 dolls seemed like a nice round number to own eventually. Well, my Monica puts me passed triple that! I don't know how my collection got that big. LOL..... Really I don't.....

    17. I never thought I'd go past double digits in this hobby when I first started. Fat lot I knew back then. It's hard when companies keep coming out with amazing sculpts or when they have a sale that just eats at your willpower to resist it. Or when you come up with a mod idea on your own that just sounds way too cool to not try.

    18. @MB Lilac and @Iron_Dog - I totally understand where both of you are coming from. What I can't understand is people who sell everything and walk away from the hobby. How is that even possible? Every once in a while I call a moratorium on one brand of doll or another, telling myself I have enough of them. Then I see a doll like Julia and can't resist her. It happens again and again. How on earth do people just turn their backs on all the temptation and desire?

    19. @vermont chick My doll collection doesn't reduce. I've never sold a doll. Heck, I have some parts that I originally bought 2? 3? years ago for a frankendolly that ended up not happening that I should sell as I can't see my ever using them and yet I never get around to selling them *sigh*. I think that's mostly just laziness though.

Dolls enter my house but never leave. This is because they're all characters from my novels and I just can't bear the thought of selling any because it would be like selling one of my characters. Logically that's dumb because it's just a doll shelling my character not the character himself but there is no reasoning with Writer Brain. Because all my guys are characters from my novels, this is also why I can't have a non-partnered doll in-house. It bothers me to have a character without their special someone, too. That's also a HUGE reason for how I ended up with so many dolls. I only have 2 dolls that don't have a partner but they are toddlers so.....

    20. @Iron_Dog - A doll collection that doesn't ever reduce/recycle/upcycle is kind of scary. First, isn't it that much harder to find dolls to fit already written characters? Second, it closes the door to future dolls that might be a better character fit. Third, what do you do if you decide to kill off a character, like so many TV shows and serial novels do?

    21. @vermont chick Well, yes and no. I only shell the characters that demand to be in resin form, which is a good thing or I'd have 500 dolls (or more!). Finding the right doll can sometimes be hard but not because of the sculpt most of the time. Usually it comes down to some other thing like finding the right height/body type or even more vexing, the right resin colour. I do have a doll that I bought white and had dyed black so dying is a perfectly valid option but I prefer to have the resin itself the colour I need where possible.

I am face-blind (prosopamnesia) so it's generally not the whole of the face that does it for me since I can't see a face as a whole object. It's usually a specific feature (often the eyes) that will make me take a closer look at a sculpt as a possible someone. Generally though, I'll see a doll and know right away who he is. Other times, I'll really like a doll but not know who it is and keep going back to it over and over again before it finally clicks on who it is. It was that way for Fei-Lau (DZ Edward). I kept going back to his sales page on DZ for nearly a year before I had the little 20 watt bulb in my head turn on and realize who he was.

My very first doll, Moswen (AoD Chi), I knew who he was the second I saw him. He can never be any other sculpt. Eilam (SD Vito Rail) was the same. When I was having a hard time finding Rhas-Khan (Eilam's husband), I tried to put Eilam into other sculpts that were taller (like 60cm or so), he was having absolutely none of that BS. It took me... 4 years to find Rhas-Khan (Soom ID51 Gluino).

More often than not, I'll be browsing around looking at dolls and one of them will make me click on him. I'll either know exactly who he is right off the bat or it'll need to percolate in my brain for a while. Right now, I have one doll buzzing in the back of my head. I don't know who he is so I'm ignoring him. I've learned that it's best not to encourage anyone. I'm sure that eventually he'll step up and say, "This is me. I must come home now." Then I'll need to find his partner *sigh*.

Generally speaking, I don't kill off my main characters as I'm far too attached to them. Secondary characters... oh they are Red Shirts. I don't like killing off some of them (I felt terrible killing off Subari and cried while writing the scene even though Subari wanted to die) but others don't bother me at all. I know how Moswen (he's my favourite) dies but I'll never write it because it upsets me too much.

That's not to say I'm not very cruel to my characters, because I am. I torture the hell out of them. More than a few times it has been literal torture; physically, emotionally, psychologically and sexually. Sometimes all of that at once. I've brought many to the very brink of death but not pushed them over the edge. I've brought many to the edge of what they thought was their breaking point. Some fall over the edge, some don't. Some may wish to die but I force them to live and work past the hell I'm putting them through.

      • x 1
    22. @Iron_Dog - You're lucky. Dolls that buzz around in the back of my head end up coming home--unless I'm flat broke--whether or not I know who they'll be. And I'm positively ruthless: when they need to go, they go. I guess it's just easier when you don't write about them.:)

    23. @vermont chick It probably is easier if you don't write novels about the characters in resin shells with both finding and even selling on dolls. I'm on the epic side of things when I write so a lot of creative time goes into the characters and their worlds (I love world building). My longest completed novel to-date would work out to be a book almost 1300 pages long. Others in the series (there's currently 4 novels) would be between 700-900 pages long each. I wrote "a short backstory" for Vale and it's 48K. Industry standards for novel-size works start at 50K. Most publishers top out at 120K per novel just due to size and printing costs although longer works are obviously produced.

There have been some dolls that I've mooned over and was hideously tempted to just buy anyway, usually because they were limited and oh so pretty (I'm looking at you Soom The Crow). I didn't pull the trigger though, which my wallet is super happy about. The David sculpt by Raccoon is really tempting because I adore those cheekbones of his (and free shipping!!!!). You could cut yourself on those cheekbones and I love that. But I don't know who he is *sigh* so I have one of my doll friends spray me with the Icy Cold Fire Hose of Denial and reluctantly close the tab.

    24. @Iron_Dog - Icy Cold Fire Hose of Denial--I love it! Here's a David fix. You deserve it. (He's playing Outlander's Jamie Fraser, with FID Raffine as his Claire.)

    25. @vermont chick Gagh! He's too gorgeous. It's not fair to tempt people like that

      • x 2
    26. Thanks @luluna, @Iron_Dog and @Patrice S. Unfortunately they're no longer a couple as I rehomed Raffine and no one else has yet stepped into the breach. I have lots of options among my girls but they have to fit into the costume. As for David, I knew he had to be Jamie the moment I first laid eyes on him, even though the sale model had dark skin and long flowing hair. He's hanging out in modern clothing and short brown hair at the moment...still gorgeous, nonetheless.

    27. @aernath - Love your guys. It's funny how Raccoon's photos of Robbie did nothing for me but I really like yours. And David looks good in dark skin. I've just walked through my photos and find I haven't taken any of my David in regular clothes. If the sun ever shines again I'll remedy that.

      • x 1
    28. @aernath I really like your Robbie. He's one I've been on the fence about so it's good to see an owner picture.

      • x 1
    29. Thanks guys! I really like Robbie with the grey wig in the Raccoon photos, so will eventually be looking for one of those for him. In the meantime, he's a matching redhead to David.
He's in Sweet Mocha, btw, and David is in Dark Mocha.

    30. Yes, great to see owner pics of Robbie @aernath ! I've always liked both him and David and have them both on my wishlist.

    31. @JinCIncy Oh, nice! I just made the first payment for a mocha elf Kai, and (Intimate) Nana is on my short list for the next sale. Good to see those both together! lol
Are those the women's third hands on your Nana? I was planning on getting those with the girl.

    32. She's actually wearing Iplehouse FID hands.

    33. @ResinRapture - I really like those. Do you get a choice of colors or is it the luck of the draw?

    34. @vermont chick depends on the deal. I got these as a '7 pairs for 18$' deal. All the colors are in the blog post. But this type of shoe is also available in black, brown, white and light blue in far better quality. These however do not fit Raccoon. But the pink range and silber/gold are the cheap version, those do fit.

    35. @ResinRapture - From what I can see in your photo, the quality looks good enough for me. The lavender is a great match for Queenie's shirt. The reason I asked about the choice of colors is that I'm used to seeing shoes for Monster High/Ever After High dolls advertised as 5 or 10 for (whatever the price). The accompanying photo shows at least 20 pairs and there's no choice. You get what they choose to send.

    36. @vermont chick The match with the lavender ones are the reason I tried to put them on her feet. I didn't expect them to fit since the other colors I already had are too small. Regarding the color choice: The lots I have found show the colors you get- and you can get them seperately as well.

    37. @JinCIncy Kai and Nana look stunning together. That cloak is gorgeous.
@aernath These are the 3rd hands.

    38. @Patrice S Oooo! Love her wig, and that perfectly crocheted top!
Thank you so much for a shot of the third hands. I thought they looked more expressive, like the second man hands. Hmmm. Now I wonder if mocha resin matches any Iple resin. Gotta go do some research!

    39. The sweet mocha is a good match to standard special real skin from Iple - my girl has Iple JID hands. They are slightly blushed at the fingers part, but the wrist color is the original.

    40. I haven't forgotten that I promised to show my David and Damien in modern clothes. The sun finally came out today so I snapped a few pics. Here's one:

Your Nina looks gorgeous in bright yellow, @boudica. Especially nice with black hair.

    41. @boudica Ooh! Thanks for that! That looks like a spot on match from here. I wonder if Iple light brown will work with raccoon mocha.

@vermont chick Yes! Lovely to see the boys together. Even in modern-day clothes, still very stylish! Looking like they just arrived at the party.

    42. Very stylish @vermont chick ! Love David's brown vest!
Sharing 2 of my guys before the weekend ends. The weather was so beautiful I had to take them outside for some pics. I love Kai so much I'm tempted to get another in a different color while they are on sale. Ughhhโ€ฆโ€ฆ.. (Lawrence is on the Raccoon Doll body). I really love the guys body.

    43. Thanks everyone.

Their clothing is a mix of things. David's shirt and vest are from Doll Hearts, sized for 60cm boys. The other outfit pieces don't fit. His gray jeans are from Raccoon. Damien's shirt is from Raccoon, pants from a SoulDoll Vito outfit, and I made the vest from a pattern for 60cm boys.

@JinCIncy - Love your two elf men together so much that it doesn't even matter that Lawrence lacks pointy ears.

    44. I'll have to get a close up of Lawrence. If you look really close at his ears, Lyn filed them just a bit so that he does appear to have a slight point. (He's supposed to be 1/2 elf :).)

    45. @vermont chick The guys look great in modern clothes. I love the vest.

    46. I can't see the point because of the hair. I'll check the pics on your Flickr. :thumbup

Thanks! :) The pattern is from Adams-Harris, drafted on the old YID boy body.

    47. so many wonderful photos! :love to @boudica @vermont chick @JinCIncy @Patrice S - to name a few!
I've been day-dreaming of an Elf Kai, and this looks like a very good time to put one on layaway. Sweet mocha or dark? can't decide. since I have so many unpainted heads waiting for me to get some free time, I'll spring for a faceup if I jump. does Raccoon Doll change the face painting for darker resins?
It will be nice to share on this thread where I usually just lurk.

    48. Your David and Damien are dashing in these outfits :thumbup. May I ask about the wigs? Are they from Iple/Monique/Leekee
Thank you for the compliments for Nina. ;)

      You're welcome. ;)

      Thank you :).

      Thank you ;)

    49. @petiteballerine - Thanks! I can't tell you which resin color to get, but when I bought Kai Raccoon's artist did not adjust the makeup down for white skin (from milk mocha). I couldn't live with him and ended up selling him. The only skin color you can be sure of is the one shown with the faceup.

@boudica - Thanks and you're welcome. As for the wigs, I don't remember what the dark brown one is because I've had it for years and have lost any identifying tags. All I know for sure is that it was a 6-7 that was too small for my dolls that wear that size. The light brown has an F-Styler tag inside, so it might be the James wig sold at Facets by Marcia. She refers to it as being from a custom manufacturer.

    50. @petiteballerine I just ordered Kai in Mocha. I also ordered the makeup. I think the the tones in the makeup will go well with the mocha color. I'm not sure how the Dark mocha and that makeup will come out. You'll have to decide that one for yourself. Good luck

    51. @vermont chick I'm selfishly glad you couldn't live with Kai's default on white skin because that meant I got to buy him off you.

    52. Hi, there! Just jumping into the conversation here. :) I recently received my very first Raccoondoll - a Nina, she arrived here last Monday, and I couldn't be any happier! She's everything I hoped she would be. A while ago, I got that idea in my head that I needed Resident Evil's Alice in doll-form and after much consideration, I decided Nina wasn't only the closest as far as the general shape of the face goes, a RACCOONdoll would also be THE ultimate inside joke. ;) Raccoondoll was kind enough to slightly modify the face-up to get the eyebrow-shape right and I still can't believe how good the likeness turned out. I also found great clothes and boots for her - but I'm still looking for some stuff for her second outfit, and I thought I'd ask here.

What I'm mostly looking for are boots and weapons. To be more exact: black kinda-sorta "military" style high boots that aren't a size or two too large for her (those ladies do have really small feet ...). And all kinds of in-scale weapons suitable for the zombie apocalypse (guns, knives, maybe a machete or katana, shotgun, etc.). Except for that one gun offered in the Raccoondoll store, I haven't been able to find anything, yet. I do have a Plan B for the weapons but I thought I'd check back with the Raccoondoll-savvy folks here on DoA first, whether there's anything readily available.

    53. As far as boots go, Raccoon ladies JUST fit into Tonner Matt shoes - such as these boots: Riding Boots (For Matt/Athletic)
I think if you search ebay for shoes for that size, you'll find more, hopefully military style? (Do let us know if you find any, I'd love more fancy boots too!) Also Facets by Marcia - in the above link, but the props section - do seem to have some guns and weapons, but I have no idea what the scale would be like, since they're meant for fashion dolls. And, oh no, I've just realised they have swords too, I want some, aaaah!!!!!

    54. I've got some swords that were supposed to be keychains from a store called Green Earth that is (was?) going out of business. They're a great size for dolls of this size and made of metal. Because the store(s) are closing, I got them super cheap. Like about $6.50CAN each.

But Alice never used a sword consistently to the best of my memory either in the movies or in video games. I think she used one in a single scene near the beginning of the last movie but I might be mixing up my zombie movies. Not to say she can't use a sword....

    55. @Khell I'd love to see your doll.
As for weapons did you look at the swords and other things on the Raccoon Doll site? They have Silver swords under items. Iplehouse used to have a few things, but the make sure of the size of the weapons before buying.because some of them are for the EID dolls.
