    5. Yipes! Didn't know we were supposed to post as we went along. Guess that's half the fun tho, isn't it? I don't have much of a sketch done...I'm going to be the haphazard, make it up as I go along, I fear. The whole doll clothes thing is pretty new to me. This is my (very) basic plan:

Wiishu really wants the cossack look, but so far I haven't found the print that will work for his shirt, so I might have to go with a print for the coat, which will shift the entire color scheme over to purple, blue and black. I've got a cotton print that will work for it. I've got a lovely rayon for the cargo pants, fur for the hat and trim, and if I find something for the shirt, the jacket will be in red fleece. His hightops, if I can pull them off, will be red cotton. I'll get pics of the fabrics in the next day or so. Gotta finish a book edit first... I think I'm going to end up with a true 24hour project runway window! :D

    6. Contestants are not required to post design drawings or fabrics choices, but it does make it so much more fun when they do! It keeps the excitment going.

In this challenge photos of the 3 different fabrics are required, but they can be added along with the other five photos in the entry post. As long as the fabrics photos are posted, it doesn't matter where.

    7. Yeah, but it sure is nice to see them posted in the body of the thread like this so we can all enjoy seeing what the various contestants are using ahead of time.:) It makes this particular challenge unique from all the others and is just plain fun!!! I guess this challenge got us all thinking about combining different patterns, textures, and types of fabrics...and it was fun to see how many different kinds we could come up with in our individual designs. Yes...you've really got us designers thinking about this one!

Don't worry, I don't work from sketches either. I just put the fabrics I want to use in a pile on my table and let them "speak" to me...I know that sounds funny! But designing on the fly is what works best for me too.

    8. I'm the same way! (High five!) OTOH...I'm in awe of what you produce! :D

Just thinking out loud and fishing for reactions....My two options right now are:

Little Mr Cossack, (which Wiishu wants)

      And Halloween Cuteness:

Which I just love, color-wise and in which he photographs much better (Although the midtone red as a jacket would probably take care of that washout.) I know the color palates (red and black and blue and purple) are about as trite as it comes, but, hey...I likes 'em! :D

I mean, eventually I shall succumb to his wails and he'll get both, but he only gets one for this runway. My early thoughts, looking at the pics, are that, as much as I love the multi-colored fur and as much as a Cossack hat made out of that is the only thing reconciling Mr W to that batch of fabrics...I think it's going to be too busy with the kitty-coat, so probably I'll go with plain black (unless I end up using the pale blue for edging the coat). The polyester multicolor fabric that I'm considering for the shirt for that outfit might be touchy busy-wise, but it's hidden until he opens the coat, and it's got a nice soft "hand" so would go under a bulky coat better. I originally considered the fuzzy pale blue as an alt for the shirt, but as I'm writing this, I'm thinking it might be really cute as lining for the coat. It's extremely soft and squishy, so might not be as bulky under the cotton as my first instinct feared. It would even sub for the "fur" edging. hmmm.....

With the mini-Cossack outfit, the two spotted fabrics are options for the shirt. I love the multicolored spots but fear it's awfully busy around his face. My eye just keeps drifting toward it...but that could be because it's a fairly bulky strip of it. The red and black has a luscious hand, but might read a bit "mature", esp when combined with the black pants. He's not all the way over to baby-cute, but he still lisps when he talks (altho I think he's figure out people think it's cute and has cultivated it...) I wish I could find fleece that was (a) lighter weight than this stuff they're making these days and (b) a really bright Chinese red as opposed to brick or this soft, on-the-purple side red.

Feedback is decidedly welcome. I haven't sewn in years until he arrived (and never for anything smaller than a real live human adult), and what I've done for him has been very simplistic. Even this project, I fear the most ambitious part is his cargo pants...and if I get at them his high-tops.

    9. Call me sentimental, but I always believe in making the doll happy!:) So I'd go with the mini-Cossack idea which can be a great jumping off point for casual winter wear, and save the other for something fun closer to halloween. But that's just me.:sweat I'm sure your boy will look awesome in whatever you make!

    10. For feedback, I would caution you that the concept for this game is for a causal, contemporary winter outfit that can be worn on the street. The use of Halloween prints changes that to a themed costume, which is not what the challenge is asking for. Does that make sense?

We are not wanting costumes, but ordinary, everyday wear.

Also required are three fabrics of different textures, one of which must be a print, stripe, check, ect.

If you have any questions, please feel free to PM me.

    11. I'm so glad I asked. Thanks for the heads-up.

Personally, I would consider the design to be the deciding factor, not the print. In fact I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around the idea that a fabric would turn a coat into a costume.

Just so I understand, would red hearts turn it into a Valentine's day theme? Do snowflakes or stars on blue turn it into Christmas? Does an anime character turn it into cosplay? Skull and crossbones into a pirate costume? Believe me, I'm not arguing, just really trying to understand the point being made, because this seriously blind-sided me. I know lots of kids that would love to wear black cats and moons and stars year round and would throw a fit if their mother put them into hearts at any other time...myself included when I was that age. These days, I won't even wear hearts on V-day! :D (Don't get me wrong, PoeticSoul, I really look forward to seeing what you do with your adorable fabrics. Love the color combos. And hearts on little girlie girls is wonderful. It's just that no one ever accused me of being girlie girl! ;))

If I were making an outfit for an adult, I'd understand the point and in fact would never have chosen this fabric for an adult, but this is a kid's retail outfit for winter/fall...and commercial, casual wear often reflects the holidays involved, in prints, appliques and socks...which was my thinking when I chose the fabric. I won't use it because obviously I run the risk of having the design rejected out of hand because of it, but I really think this point really needs a little rethinking.

And an observation just for giggles: if we were designing for a line, wouldn't it be for fall/winter 2013, since this year's fall/winter is now on the 40% off lowest price sales racks? :) Maybe I've been working on the sales-side of writing too long! :D

Cotton, rayon, and fur/woolie. Aren't these different enough? Again, asking for clarification here.

    12. I think the point is that your one fabric is pretty obviously a halloween design. We're more designing for non-holiday mass winter production here...not a one-off for that special child, but things that the regular masses might choose to wear casually in cold weather. Things like stars (by themselves), hearts, polka dots, flowers or plaids (as examples) are universal designs. And something like Hello Kitty, Disney, etc. isn't for cosplay, but is seen year around on t-shirts, caps, sweatshirts, sweaters etc...so are likewise universally accepted as decoration on casual wear. (While dressing up entirely as that character of course would be cosplay.) Decorated Christmas trees as a pattern, for example, would be a no. An un-decorated evergreen tree pattern could be a yes. I'm sure elfmoon can explain it better than I can. (Sorry, just trying to help here.)

    13. The rules of the challange state that the outfit cannot be holiday themed.

Trees, leaves, stars, flowers and such are winter themed, but if you have decorated trees, stars and snowflakes combined with other symbols of Christmas, it becomes holiday themed. Likewise, acorns, pumpkins, and fruit by themselves are winter themed, but if you combine them with turkeys and cornucopias they become recognizable as a Thanksgiving theme. Black cats, moons and stars suggest Halloween. Skulls and crossbones are not winter themed. Although children might love to wear clothing with these types of prints, it's not what this challenge is asking for. The challenge is not specifically for kid's clothing, but includes teens and adults.

Winter themed also considers the type of outfit. Coats, vests, long sleeved tops and leggings would keep a person warm in cold weather as opposed to shorts and a halter top.

I'm saying this because Concept Interpretation is one of the categories the outfits are judged on.

Cotton, rayon and fur are good choices!

This is a good reason to buy fabric at the store rather than online! (Curse you fabric store being an hour away!)
The print is far smaller than it appeared online, I almost can't believe its the same one, I think they really zoomed in on the dots, which looked like triangles in the photos. And the wool is very thick. It said medium weight, but this is thicker than my own winter coat! Well, here is what I am using anyway, I will experiment with the wool to see if I can sew with it being so thick, if not I'll get another fabric for the main coat. :doh

Oh, the photo is really light for some reason, the fabrics are actually much darker.

    20. I know that I don't say a lot. You guys are so wonderful! The designs, the talents and abilities, the cutest of models, the fun and the high quality of work. You inspire me and you motivate me. I finally have a resin doll, but she is headless. For now I am focusing on her body blushing and trying to learn to make basic patterns for her. She is an EID from Iplehouse and headless. Lol. She will get a head in a few months when I have taken care of other priorities. So you can all see her once she has a head. Just know that I am overwhelmed and underwhelmed at the same time. She has a glamour bust I think it is called and is very big... big enough to make me retreat..lol... but you guys push on no matter what your challenge is and I aspire to do that too... so I will share what I make as I get stuff done. You all keep going and know that there are people watching that you are mentoring. I feel like I have a whole group of big brothers and big sisters and they all love dolls just like I do! Thank you, I can't say thank you enough!:chocoberry:aheartbea:aheartbea

    28. Wow, Milk Bunny! That's unusual. Most fabrics these days are pretty color fast. It's always best to wash fabrics before making them into garments, as you said, mostly to remove the 'starch' coating the keeps fabric wrinkle free on the bolt, and to allow for shrinkage.

    29. Okay... so I finally got started sewing today.:) I got behind because I spent the past week reorganizing all my doll and sewing stuff in plastic storage drawers and shuffling it all around from room to room...and I do mean all of it (for 13 dolls!) Now that was a big job!:doh But the good news is that during the process I uncovered the perfect colored tie-dyed cotton fabric to match some of the sock fabric I'm using in this challenge!:cheer So I've dumped the brown and pink polka dot flannel and substituted a lime green tie-dye. Appropriately, I redid my fabric photo in post 61, page 4 of this thread.

    30. I'm totally behind. Edits have been going well and when the muse is with you, can't afford to fight it. Since I'm going with the red and black scheme, I've been searching for a red I liked better than the one I had. Found a nice bright warm felt the should work well, and have my tiny grommets on order. Hopefully will get here in time, otherwise will have to fake it. Hope to sew this weekend. YAY!

    31. It's pretty easy. This is composes of basically two pictures, one with open eyes, one with wink and hand to mouth. You just need to make sure the alignment is good. There are lots of programs that will do an animation for you, but basically it boils down to a handful of images saved as (usually) an animated gif, which is something that program does. There's a pretty good photoshop tutorial here: (Hope it's ok to post links?)

    33. Leggings are considered an accessory. The outfit should consist of 3 pieces, as explained in the challenge, and the leggings would be your required accessory.

I may be looking at your fabrics incorrectly, but it seems that two of them are alike, both knitted or crochted? If that's correct then they would be considered the same texture fabric. Maybe I'm just not seeing them properly.

    37. There's four in the picture, a cotton canvas, a knit, a cotton spandex ribbed fabric and I'm really not sure about that upper right fabric. It's a very loose see through and I snagged it because it looked closer to lace than a knit. But if you think it looks like a knit I'll see what else I can come up with.

    39. I have a silly question too. I managed to find all the fabric in the bottomless pit i call a sewing room. If I had material bought for previous projects would i take a percentage of the cost from that. For Example: If i bought a yard of material for a shawl i was making and used an 1/8th of it for this challenge would i use what it would have cost for that amount towards the total cost of material?

    40. Yes. As an example: If you bought a yard of fabric for another project and have 1/2 yard left and want to use that 1/2 yard for this challenge, you would split the cost of the yard in half and that would be the price.

    41. Question: Are we supposed to supply "receipts" at the end? i.e. x amount of fabric for x dollars? And will you take our word on it, since I haven't kept any receipts!:sweat

I finally gave up on both my posted fabric options. Wiishu refused all the shirt ideas/fabrics that went with red (at least that would go with a contemporary-themed outfit), so he and I went back to the drawing board (actually Hancocks) and found a great new fleece for his jacket. Totally new color scheme that will let him use a knit sock-shirt, since I'll have the print requirement filled. Sheesh...who knew getting a winter outfit for him would entail so much drama...He's such a little brat. If he weren't so cute...

    42. No, we don't require any reciepts, it works on the honor system. We trust that our designer will stay within the allowed budget.

BTW ~ just a reminder that thread, interfacing, bais tape, buttons, snaps and that sort of items are not included in the budget. These are things that people usually have on hand, and should they have to buy them, they are not part of the budget.
