You are given the option of designing clothing for the men’s, women’s, or children’s department.Your creation will be featured in a runway show and and then sold in a high end department store. The emphasis of this challenge is design, fabric texture and color. Your outfit cannot be holiday themed.

      RULES:
The spending limit for games is $25.00. This includes fabric and all supplies, except thread. For countries other than the US, spend the equivalent currency.

    3. When you say "causal," do you mean that the design should include a symbol for a cause such as Breast Cancer Awareness (ie, the pink ribbon symbol) or some other well-known cause?

By causal we mean everyday wear, not evening, sport or formal attire. Just an outfit one would wear on the street in their leasure time.

    8. Can I safely assume that a lining material does not count as one of the three materials to be used? And can hand knit items be used as accessories or must they be sewn also?

      • Creative
    9. You can use any type of lining fabric and it is not included in the fabic choices. Lining material is usually basic with not a lot of options.

Any accessory that is hand made is acceptable, whether it is fabric, knitted, etc.

    15. :doh D'oh! Of course. I don't know why I went to a complicated solution instead of a simple one. I think it was the way the word was italicized ... causal ... like they were trying to emphasize and convey some special meaning - that I wasn't getting, lol.

    16. I am thinking about participating, but it depends on your definition of "casual", will I be allowed to do a high-fantasy take on the theme or will that pull down my score, I have little interest in making contemporary clothes for my dolls to be honest.

Finally done! Quite proud of the fact that I finished (^^" I'm not too good with deadlines)

      Well, I tried....

      Fabric 1;
Polyester Stretch, used for the long-sleeved top
      [IMG]

Fabric 2; Blended wool and acrylic (relying on mum to name the fabrics...) for the poncho
      [IMG]

Fabric 3: Knit (with ridges) for the high waisted skirt

I have also used black polyester for the leggings, beige (with variations in colour) fur for the poncho and the boots and some black cloth (don't know what type, sorry) for the boots as well.

    40. This challenge fits really well into my sewing aspirations. I wanted to make a really cute coat for a while, I got myself a new, *functioning* sewing machine, the doll who wears contemporary casual outfits is finally here (well, the head is shipping back to me from the artist) and along comes this challenge.

The fabric for the coat I already had here, as a friend gave me a scrap of her beautiful coat fabric to me a few months ago. So when I went shopping yesterday, I tried choosing fabric suiting that one.
So this is my current fabric selection: [IMG]

The piece I'm looking forward to making the most is of course the coat (black and white fabric in the lower right of the picture), but it is also the piece I'm dreading the most because I'm not quite sure yet how to draft a coat pattern, yet alone the specific one I have in mind :sweat
So right now, I started with the grey fabric. I wanted to use contrasting lighter grey thread, but right now I'm regretting it, as it is very easy to see not completely straight lines and one can only unpick so many times.

I'm very much a self-taught beginner, so with using all these differently textured fabrics and having to design three + one pieces, I'm sure I will learn a lot!

    41. I hear ya on that one. I've been meaning to make some winter/cold weather appropriate clothing for quite a few of my dolls, maybe this will get me motivated. Though Zhara didn't really need anything, I just have a neat idea for some contrasting fabrics and colors that will look good on her. Can't wait to have some spare time to get started..hopefully this weekend. Shoes will be interesting indeed for her since she has fantasy claw feet, but I have the perfect idea..teehee.

    45. Here are my fabrics. The top photo is printed silk for the shirt and a coordinating pin-wale corduroy for the slacks.
The lower photo is the vinyl for the imitation leather jacket and the bouclé knit for the lining; it is a slightly brighter shade than the corduroy but should blend being inside the jacket.
The colors in the lower photo are more true than the top; I couldn't get the flash adjusted quite right.

    48. Wow, you guys are off to a good start! I purchased two of my fabrics today on ebay, so they should be here soon. :)
Does anyone know if wool and denim in the same texture family?

    49. Milk Bunny ~ designers are allowed to order fabric on line before the challenge begins because it takes awhile for it to arrive. That way you'll be able to start sewing as soon as the contest begins.

Wool and demin don't have to same texture. Wool is generally nubby, you can feel the texture. Demin is flat with a very tight weave. Hope that helps!

    53. Ready to dig through my mounds of fabric straps and old clothes to see what I can come up with for this challenge, have already done a few sketches, but I think I need to figure out the fabrics first and then I'll be able to get a better sketch together.

    54. I found two great fabrics with amazing textures! One's a beigey knit with ridges going across (pictures will be up soon!) I planned that for the high waisted skirt and the other one is a crisscrossing type of grey fabric (don't know what type XP) which will be suitable for the poncho. I'm also planning to make a jumper out of the print fabric (I still need to pick the fabric out -.-) and black leggings as an accessory ^^

    56. After what seemed like all day digging through my fabric containers...I couldn't find anything that went well together, and no good knits that I was kinda hoping to have..sigh..I found like 2 great fabrics to use but then I couldn't find anything I have to match either of them..lol. so looks like I may need to take a trip to the fabric store.

    59. My doll arrived after dark, I hope to be able to get a photo up tomorrow. He needs clothes, so that's why I wanted to use him for this challenge. He can use some winter casual stuff!

I can't draw, but I'm planning a pair of loose, flowing pants in woven linen, a cotton jersey knit T-shirt of some sort and a handknit wool cardigan with kimono-inspired styling. I haven't quite worked out the color scheme, it will depend on what fabrics and yarn I can find in my stash because I'm determined not to buy any additional supplies right now. At the moment I'm swatching yarns to see what will work best for the cardigan.
