Project Runway ~ The Tales of the Arabian Nights Challenge ~ Game 12

May 14, 2012

    1. Elfmoon, did you see my post about needing an extension? Just want to make sure ;)

Made the base for the pants last night along with a face veil, I'm beginning to think my look is more costumie than traditional, oh well, at least it is fun.

Just got a call for some pattern drafting work in the real world so off to make a pattern for some rapper!

    3. We really are getting down to the end, huh? I was able to get my under-roos done, and remembered why I hate working with silk. :| Tonight I cut out and make the pants, but I made sure to have a supply of fray check on hand.

Anyone else having fun working with easily frayed fabric?

    5. hemlock_inyx- I had fun with sheers and delicates. I ended up with about 40% handsewing because my sewing machine loves to eat such thin fabrics. Since the lace was a 12"x15" discontinued designer fabric sample, I decided not to feed it to the beast, and took care of it myself. ^^; For empathy's sake, it was a silk blend lace. u_u

    7. Elfmoon I'll need an extension but I'm not sure if I'll finish in time. I was all set to have it done and then I had an accident.

Whilst I was taking my Clydesdale through a short gate our stupid hyper border collie rushed through going the other way. This closed the gate on her as she was half way through. She panicked and bolted, slamming the gate into me. I'm now in pain from my neck to my lower back and the idea of sitting at my machine isn't in the cards right now.

If I'm feeling up to it tomorrow I'll keep going but it doesn't look good right now.

    9. I've updated the list. This is the last call for extentions as the game ends tonight.

Whitewolf ~ I'm releaved that you weren't knocked down and stepped on! I added you to the withdrawl list, but if you feel up to it, go ahead and finish your costume within the 48 hour extention period and we will accept your entry.

    10. For all those leaving their work for the very last minute - know that you are not alone. I am still sewing my costume and I have no clue how I am going to finish, but somehow I am an optimist to the end (even when the end has passed me by two days ago) :)

I decided to change the fabric of the shirt. The light stripy one didn't "belong" with the costume I had in mind, so now I had to sew a brand new shirt... still need to finish the neck opening but the rest of the shirt is done at least.

Now, the pants need the belt and I need to make the cuffs wider so that his feet go through... then all the other stuff I planned on doing AND I have no weapons at all LOL my poor warrior!!

And I am purposefully not looking at the submissions as I will get even more stressed :P

Hopefully the extra 2 days will allow designers to put last minute touches on their costumes.

    12. I have everything all set, I'm just going to pop in a movie and sew sew sew! It's going to end up more inspired by the belly dancers at my Renaissance festival than actual Arabian dancers, but oh well. This was really fun to do! I've worked with some fabrics that I never would have on my own and I'm about to try doing a stretchy top, which is also new to me. I'm glad I tried this challenge.

    25. My photos are up. I ran out of time and light and couldn't find things I wanted to include in the glamour shot, but I picked the best of a really bad bunch of photos to submit. I feel like I fell very short of my original vision, but I did the best I could what with jury duty, getting really sick and then having my Mom get really sick with the same thing when I was barely back on my feet. So, like the dog walking on his hind legs, it's remarkable not because it's done so well, but that it's done at all.

    29. Here's some pics of my boy, Rasheed. He's an IP Akando with a custom tan (done by me).

Rasheed lives in the Ottoman Empire during the reign of Suleiman the Magnificent. He's 3/4 Turk and 1//4 Mongolian.
He inherited the family business when his father and older brother were robbed and killed while traveling with a camel carivan.
His household includes his widowed mother, two unmarried sisters (he's working on that!), his wife and their children, a young daughter and infant son and a harem boy named Kismet.
Although he loves his wife dearly, Kismet is the song in his soul and the joy in his heart.

Of all my dolls he's the worse! lol! All the big IP boys are sway backed, which makes it near impossible to fit anything on them that looks decent and they're horrible posers!

    38. Here's my other boy, Kismet.

Kisment (a middle eastern word for 'fate') was born in a small village in Wallachia (Romania). Yearly the Sultan's agents traveled to various parts of the Ottoman Empire to collect tribute in the form of young males who then became slaves of the Sultan. Most of these young men were constricted into the army (the Janissary), but sometimes an unscrupulous slave master would list a boy as having died on the journey back to the capitol of Constantinople, sell him at a private auction and pocket the money. Such was Kismet's fate.

Rasheed, who was in the capitol that day and happened to be in the bazar and happened to be passing the slave auctions, noticed him. The boy looked so frightened and lost that Rasheed could not help but feel empathy, since his own great grandmother had been a Mogolian slave. Rasheed did not support slavery, nor did he own any, but he felt compelled to purchase the boy. Allah had put the boy in his path and he could not walk away.

Thus began Kismet's life as a cherished member of the wealthy merchant's household. He was not treated as a slave, but as a much loved companion. Kismet, who had known only cruelty at the hands of his alcoholic father, soon learned to trust his Master and Rasheed became the love of his life and his one and only.

Of course Rasheed's wife and mother were horrified and angry over their ralationship ~ but that's another story! LOL!
