The deadline for posting entries is June 1[SUP]st[/SUP] at 11:59 PM, PST.

The game will end on June30[SUP]st[/SUP] at 11:59 PM, PST.

I'm going to do a belly dancer themed costume.

edit: If I were not such a stubborn person, I would have dropped out of this three hours ago. I lost snaps, had to entertain a relative, and gave up taking a nap before seeing a midnight movie before this was finished. SO sorry about awful lighting!!!

SUBMISSION:
Finally! This was a tough project. This is the first time I actually made full costume for an EID boy and wow, so heavy!! The idea for the warrior costume came from few different places but in a nutshell, I wanted something that was pretty historically accurate but with some fantasy flare to it - after all, he is a character in my fantasy world: a noble and highest ranking warrior serving his Caliph. Notice no shoes? He is so tough and bad a** he walks barefoot on the hot sand. NOT! I just fail at making shoes, no clue how to make them to save my life.

I am not too happy with it as I didn't get to do everything I wanted (the toy sword I had laying around but added some bling to it, and the knife was made out of tin >.<) but overall, I think he looks pretty spiffy.
I am safe to say I will not leave my project to the very end again. Too stressful LOL

Theme: Harem Girl

The photo of the woodcarving depiction of a medieval arabian harem girl (see my WIP post) inpired these rather risque pajamas for my Lishe. Accessory #1, the Juliet cap, is knit in Jaggerspun Zephyr merino/silk in Lady Slipper pink, with glass rocailles in pearl and peridot beads, picking up the colors of the embroidery on the fabric used for the tunic and trousers. Accessory #2 is a pair of earrings with murano glass rose beads in pink and green shades and peridot beads.

The red stuff on the platter is supposed to be Turkish Delight; the powdered sugar melted in the heat. I ran out of time and light, but these pictures are the best of a bad lot.

my idea was to have my assassin girl wear a normal looking burqa so she could blend in and hide her weapons, when her target was near she had a sleek style for the attack.

Character: Mookie has been practicing his hip shakes to be a belly dancer, but I am favoring him being a genie. We will make a final decision before the deadline.
Our entry will be in the genie category. I have ideas for that but not so much for the belly dancer. I am not crazy about the look of the male belly dancers and while Mookie is secure enough in his gender identity to portray a girl belly dancer, I am the one doing the sewing so I get to make the final decision.

21. I have revised the list of costume themes (and screwed up the format!), so you might want to take another look before deciding what kind of costume you want to make. Remember that the theme is not limited to the list. You can design any kind of costume you want as long as it true to the Arabian Nights concept.

No, I'm sorry, but it's one entry per designer per challenge.

Havng more than one entry would double the designers chance of winning and that wouldn't be fair to the other contestants.

35. I've found an inspiration for my outfit. It's a woodcut from 1283, found on a website for the history of chess, that is entitled "Moorish Women in Arabian Dress" and depicts three women in a harem, one playing a stringed instrument and two playing a form of chess. I've cropped the photo to focus on the woman I'm inspired by:

I found some lovely embroidered organdy for the main outfit (tunic and trousers) on Ebay, but the seller was away and not taking orders, and the listing ended before the seller's return date, so I'm trying to contact her to see if she will relist the fabric. I'm planning to make the Juliet cap for the required accessory, and maybe some jewelry, time permitting. I think I have all or most of what I'll need for them on hand already, so it all hinges on getting that fabric.

5/31 update: The seller relisted and I ordered the fabric! However, I have to report for jury duty tomorrow, and depending on how that goes, it may throw a monkey wrench into the works.

6/8 update: I lucked out on the jury duty, the fabric arrived and I have begun knitting the Juliet cap. Here's everything gathered together for this project:

6/13 Making slow progress, still working on the Juliet cap.

36. Oh, that sounds lovely!

It will be interesting to see how many costumes are historically acurate and how many are total fantasy, not that it matters! LOL!

37. ah...so it doesn't have to be historically accurate?? I wasn't sure about that one.

38. No, the costumes do not have to be historically accurate in every detail, but they do have to stay true to the Middle Eastern design and aesthetics of the period. They must be recognizable as belonging to an ancient Middle Eastern culture.

Take, for example, a female warrior. If the costume consists of a mini skirt/dress with her legs bare, that's not a good interpretation of the concept because woman of the period did not dress that way. In looking at such a costume it could not be tied in specifically with any of the Middle Eastern cultures. It would probably remind people of evles or some present day human culture. You might see said costume in a movie but if you saw a woman walking down the street wearing the costume you wouldn't think to yourself, 'There's an Arabian Nights outfit'.

Then take, for example, a male belly dancer. There were, and still are male dancers, but in ancient times they did not wear harem pants. They danced in caftans and were completed covered in clothing, but today some of them dance in costumes that look like Disney's Aladan charactor. That is a fantasy costume, but acceptable, because it is recognizable as being Middle Eastern.

Does that make sense?

39. perfect sense thanks!...I'm well familar with both male and female traditional belly dancing outfits...have made guite a few for both in human size..lol..not sure if I want to do belling dancing or not. I'm not certain I will be getting my Luna in time or not..so I may have to switch dolls but I'll be sure to do so before the deadline :) does the style have to be specified by the sign up deadline or just by the end of the contest date?

40. The costume theme must be entered before the sign up deadline.

I'm old now, but I use to belly dance back in the day. Now I'm all belly and no dance! LOL!

41. Are we allowed to start posting our WIPs yet or do we have to wait till the beginning of June? I've already started working on the outfit's shoes and could most probably already share some pictures xD

42. You're not allowed to begin making your costume until June 1st! That's when the challenge begins.

You are allowed to purchase fabrics/supplies before the sign up deadline only because many people purchase on line and it's unfair to make them wait for packages to arrive while other designers are sewing.

44. LOL! I can imagine! You don't have to post a pic of male dancer, but if you want to see some great costumes go to Youtube and type in male belly dancers. Not only will you see costumes, but you'll get to see dancers in action, wearing both tradational and modern costumes.

Here's a link to a dancer wearing a traditional costume and performing a traditional dance.

45. At this point, we can start our work-in- progress posts with design ideas, sketches and inspiration photos, and our planned materials including photos if we wish, then we can update them with our work after the game begins.

Actually, since " The game will begin on June 1 st at 11:59 PM, PST" (Pacific Standard Time), everyone will need to convert to their own local time. Here on the US east coast, for instance, it will be June 2nd at 3:59 AM EDT (Eastern Daylight Time) - three hours for the difference in time zones plus one hour to convert to Daylight Savings Time. Since the Pacific time zone is actually on Daylight Savings Time, too, they will also have to convert from PST to PDT and start June 2nd at 12:59 AM
local time.

Thanks!

That reminds me ~ we're looking for someone who knows how to photoshop the ribbons onto the winning photos. I can provide the ribbons, but I don't know how to add them. This would need to be someone who follows the games but is not a participant. Any volunteers?

53. Well I've got a doll on order (Soom Yrie) that I'm meant to make a Middle Eastern Belly Dancer kind of outfit for so I guess this fits in with that. I won't have her in time for the contest though so I'll substitute my Soom Violet as a model for her clothing (at least she'll have a nice new outfit when she arrives)

Entry Form:
DOA user name: whitewolf
Size and sculpt of model BJD Soom Violet YO-SD
Is your doll a tiny? (6” and under) No
Would you like your costume critiqued by a judge? No
Theme: Belly Dancer
Photo of model BJD Well she's i
n bits and without a face-up at the moment but here's a photo

54. Thank goodness the deadline is looming right around the corner:sweat...I've changed my model choice back and forth about a dozen times already!:doh In my defense, it's because I've had two dolls vying for the same genie character...so it was a race to the finish to see which one was victorious in earning themselves a brand new outfit!
