sketchy ideas:


suspender, tulle skirt to represent the apron thinger. Union Jack shirt with band name. stripey leggings, 'collection' hoody... kinda having the idea that she is going back and forth to wonderland and has a collection of things from there, cheshire tail, pocket watch, playing cards, roses, eat me drink me... top hat... gauntlets, bracelets, chess pieces still unsure about the trinket things.

since the inspiration is music related i cant stop thinking about these songs... thought it would be fun to add them.

Fairytale: The Bee and the Orange Tree
Band name: The Stingers
Character photo: Princess Amiee
Shipwrecked as an infant Princess Amiee was found and raised by Ogres whom dressed her in animal skins. Finally escaping she has to use a magic wand to transform herself into a bee and the Prince into a Orange Tree so the ogres don't recognize them. The wand is lost and they are stuck in this form until another princess comes along and figures out they are under enchantment...the very condensed version of the whole story found through the wiki link http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Bee_and_the_Orange_Tree. (only photo I could find I hope this is ok) In the photo she is dressed in skins and is carrying a bundle of food that she is taking to the prince who also got shipwrecked.

My punk rock interpretation of the fairytale takes several aspects from the original costume. The asymetrical rugged edges of the skins as well as layering that she is wearing is shown in the the skirt, sleeve and one boot cover with torn edges of plaid and fishnet in my design.To incoporate the animal skins that the Orcs made her wear I used "animal skin" like fabrics in leather(faux) and leopard print throughoutf the entire costume with a little added spice of punk with the colors and patent leather look. The quiver that she is carrying on her hip in the original photo I updated to the punkish small pouch that is around her upper thigh. And lastly I decided to recreate her crazy hair with a punky spiky style. All articles she is wearing, except the shoes were all made by me including the wig. And though its not part of the competition one of the reasons that I picked this fairytale was because I had already had plans to dye my doll yellow since her character is going to be a bee so this competition was a great inspiration to start working on her.

Design Idea..

I have the stripey yellow & black fabric, the apple charm and thin red ribbon. I'll need black fabric, a tiny bit of red fabric and I really want to make a doll sized comb (it fits in the fairy tale of Snow White) but I have NO idea where to start! It would have to be very dainty... I think my hands are too clumsy but when April comes I can try

Fairytale: Little Red Riding Hood
Character: Red

I wanted a very opera dress feel to my design because I choose Symphonic Power Metal and felt that the elegance could be brought in to it, with her being the violinist of Wolfslayer. The Cape of Red Riding hood was really the staple though and I fell in love with the long hood I put on it. The red side skirt is detachable and really put there to tie in the red throughout the costume. If she gets too hot on stage she can take it and the cape off. The Lamb on Red's Cape is supposed to signify the innocence of her character.

I was going for an all over tattered look. The strapy waist piece I incorporated with the strap detail on the main skirt piece. I also really liked the shoulders on the oridginal dress so I tried to add that

So between April 1st and 30th we actually sew the costume that we are making and it will be an interpretation of Red Riding Hoods Costume but with a rock band feel correct? But we are allowed to sketch up concept design between now and then?

Fairytale: The Light Princess


Character: The princess

Band Name: Downside Up

Genre: Soul/blues

 

My concept for the Princess's outfit is retro kitsch, a la Paloma Faith (the band name is an homage to her song "Upside Down"), but incorporating the tethers that keep the Princess from floating away. I want to do a form-fitting knit dress with a cord-wrapped waist ending in a sort of bustle of tethers, wrist corsages/tethers, and a hat or fascinater that also incorporates the tethers.

I love the idea of the Princess being in a soul/blues band, since the character is absolutely incapable of being serious or shedding tears ... until, of course, her lover nearly dies in front of her.

Elfmoon is my entry character pic ok? I couldn't find any photos accept this one since mine is kinda an obscure fairytale if not let me know and I can change characters to something easier to find.

She's carrying the basket of goodies her mom made for grandma ^^ I i think I've read a versions or two that's said it specifically it's muffins(and what looks like wine because we all know grandmas a boozer xP) and stuff I doo believe

 

After hunting through fabric stores, flea markets and thrift stores, I finally gave up looking locally for a specific and major piece of fabric I needed for this...and thankfully found something online I think will really work for what I'm trying to do and ordered it. (Golly, so much drama for one little fat quarter of the perfect thing in the perfect color!) Now that I can "see" the final vision in my head, I'm really looking forward to the design process.

Mookie's band, RATZ, is a glam rock band. From the original costume, I used the tunic and cape, "blinged out" with some gold braid trim and a gold chain belt. The orginal costume also had a hat, but I changed it to the top hat format that was popular among glam rock performers. The hat has a jaunty feather as did the orignal. Lastly, no self respecting glam rocker would be without his gold glitter tights, so Mookie is wearing gold tights instead of the harlequin patterned ones.

what I can understand from the full story it appears to be a bundle of food and what not that she is taking to the prince who also got shipwrecked and is hiding in a cave from the Ogres.

@missmeli: he is gorgeous! Beauty and Beast is one of my favorite fairytales...I was going to go for something more traditional but I decided why not take a shot one I'd never heard of.

The sketch at the right is a very rough sketch of how the obi is going to close. And below that is a concept sketch for what I might paint on the kimono.

I didn't realize just how small Pukis were until I started to cut out the pattern!

It's been such a busy month! But I've stayed focused and on task, and I've budgeted my time to include this because I enjoy these challenges so much. They're my little reward for myself and my dolls amidst all the hectic activity in my life. I already have one piece made, and I have worked out my pattern for piece number two. So yeah, onward and upward for me.

 

I really need to light a fire under my butt. I've pinned together the frame for the top and have been slowly taking apart a shirt I intend to use for fabric.

 

I lost my sketchbook O.o... here sketchbook sketchbook.... booooook? Booooook?

 

sigh...as usually I'm quite behind, had some things come up and am finishing costumes for a fashion show at the moment sooo...I should be back on target this Sunday *crossing fingers*

 

Clothes are ready, need to make some accessories

 

I haven't even started yet. My bad! Will be done though by deadline. I am another who needs that lighter to motivate me!

 

Lighter - I need a whole damn bonfire. My hubby came home from pre-deployment training with the Army so we're trying to get all the jobs done on our farm in a couple of weeks that we would normally get done in 6+ months.

 

that sucks uber bad all I can do when my hubby is pre deployment is try not to go emo until he leaves >.> then its serious chocolate time

Got a tiny bit more done today I should be sewing the top tomorrow

Well, I'm halfway through the underdress and should finish that tonight. It's lacy with lots of hand sewing but the overdress will mostly be done by machine. My regular Bernina is still in the shop, so I'm using an industrial, which is really a challenge for tiny clothes. Adds a little drama though--just like the show

 

If there is an extension list, I already know I need too be on it

 

No where near done but my girls head will be home tomorrow that should give me a good kick in the ass

 

Well top and cape is finished here now just to work on accessories and bottom piece .

 

Hoping to start working on mine very soon..can't wait to see everyone's designs!
