Project runway 'the rock and roll fantasy' challenge ~ game 11 - WINNERS POSTED

This sounds fun wish my doll was here so I could do it but I can't so anyway have fun everyone.

 

Entries need to be placed by tomorrow? Just wanted to double check, normally there are a few days to post. I'll be posting mine though today . Do we have to post the character photo when we place the entry? or just include it when we finish the rock band version?

 

Please clarify the entry deadline. Your post announcing the contest was dated yesterday. So the deadline is tomorrow, March 1st? Only two days to enter? With the last few contests, they new contest was announced around the 15th when the winners were announced from the previous contest and you could enter until the first of the next month, giving about 2 weeks. Why such a short entry period this time?

The fairytale "The Emporer's New Clothes" actually always sprang to mind whenever I would see classic rockers like Mick Jagger or Steven Tyler (although I love them both dearly) and others strutting around the stage with their jackets open and no shirt. I would always wonder why the skinniest guys with little to no chest or muscle definition would prance around half-naked like proud peacocks on stage...and I'd always question who on earth in their entourage convinced them they looked sexy doing it! So naturally this is the approach I took with this challenge. I know we only had to use one element in our design, but I thought it would be fun to challenge myself to do them all! So I reinterpreted the various parts of the King's courtly costume to fit the classic rocker style (except the shirt of course...which the lack-there-of was the whole point of my costume.) The royal coat became a tie-dyed red and gold splattered long rocker's coat. The tight breeches became tight leather hip huggers. The crown became a classic leather rocker's hat with gold and jewelled hatband. The buckled shoes became buckled boots. The baldric with gold details became a leather baldric-and-belt combination with gold details. The ruffle on the socks became lace ruffles at the cuffs. And finally, the ermine tail collar became ermine tails hanging from the belt and hat (faux of course...no ermines were harmed in the making of this costume.)

I used the original pants, and the jewelry. The hat was a late idea, at first I didn't want to do any. But since one fabric disappeared, I needed to improvise, so it came with it. On stage, when you move a lot, you need airy clothes, so his top is opened.

kept the striped leggings from the original picture, the blue stripes from her dress i used in the jacket and black hair bow, wanted to keep the fluffy skirt, eat me cookies and drink me bottle and the white rabbit's pocket watch represented. then added the 'painting the white roses red' pin, cheshire cat's tail and rabbit ears. (made the mad hatter's hat as a prop.)

Quick question: regarding references for the original costume, must it be a picture? Or can we simply base it on the words of the fairytale, and include the quote as a reference instead?

 

I didnt see Peter Pan listed, but it is an iconic children's tale. Can I use that?

Finished outfit: I decided to simplify the colours down to red and black to try and push it towards punk. Crown and hearts needed to also be kept to make her identifiable. Red bubble under skirt, black tulle skirt, black/shiny red gathered top, gloves and crown all made. Fur stole is real fur I had lying around.

The pieces of the character photo I pulled were the pointed back of the hood, the petticoat, stockings, basket, and frayed look from the cape. With the hood; I decided to to a sleeveless jacket with a wolf's head, keeping the pointed back and adding a wolf's tail. I kept the bloomers more simplified, but silver to match the dress. Red has a super fluffy toulled tutu, mismatched stockings, her dress and jacket have the frayed edges (to look like it had been torn from fighting or from catching on thorns). She has a matching mini purse instead of the basket. Silver chain and feathered charms tie the purse, bow & bracelett, and jacket together. She's rocking multiple colors of toulle, silver satin, red crushed velvet, silver sparkly polyester, and burgundy cotton blend. Plenty of sparkle for the stage, but still keeping her psychobilly style true with the band patches, nametag, and showing her tattoos off.

I have used several design elements from Cinderella to inspire Madalyn's costume
1. The sweetheart neckline on her dress bodice. It is rather hard to tell as Madalyn is rather generously busted but it dips down slightly on her velour dress.
2. Her gloves which I made as hand-knitted mohair arm warmers and made leg warmers to match. I also used striping of colours to match her lace peplum.
3. Her choker which I made into a velvet choker with a fairy charm to signify her fairy godmother.
4. Her peplum in which I made it a layered lace, eyelet belt.

Yes, I've got it done and pictures taken. Phew.

Instead of hakama I made tight black pants that went with his boots. The kimono is made to show off some skin. I made a vest not a happi coat so that more of the kimono would be visible and give it more of a late 70’s feels. Due to technical difficulties with my sewing machine I had to do most of this outfit by hand.

I replicated the headband as best I could, that is Momotaro’s iconic identifier. For his glamour shot, he’s using his katana as a mic.

I know this pic doesn't show a lot of detail in the outfit, but it does show the elements that will be incorporated into the design.

The apron and shawl elements of the original were reimagined for the rock outfit. My design also incorporates the general raggedness of the original outfit in the mixed patterns, layered skirt, patches, unfinished hems and hand fraying details. Although not part of the original design, the star charm on the shawl is a reference to the falling star featured in the story.

The outfit is machine sewn, other than the eyes for the lacing on the fully-lined bustier and the star charm. The shawl is attached as part of the top, but the top is still removable.The three parts of the skirt were individually hand-pleated.

I have incorporated into my design the original elements of the red shoes which have now become red stiletto boots. The empire dress has been updated to a decadent red and black sleeveless empire dress. The fan that is seen in the original photo has now become a purse with a fan design on the front flap of the purse.
