Project Runway ~ Game 19 ~ behold Mount Olympus!

Aug 13, 2013

    1. Thanks Vindalootoo! Your Apollo is the cutest one ever!!
I agree with you, it would be really nice to have an Olympian Family photo.

    2. I am loving everyone's entries so far!!! :D Apollo is downright adorable! And Athena has a very commanding presence. I am super excited about all the great work everyone has been doing!
I am going to try and get some photos after my son comes home from school. I had to scrap the vest I was making, the wings were not letting it fit properly, but this just means Eros is going to be showing that manly stomach of his. ;)

    3. oooo...manly tummies gooooood.

(Cut it out, Mom. You embawassin' me....)

(Hush, brat. I'm not dead, yet.)

new-ragdolls: I just noticed your hunky lad's button-fly pants. Did you make those? Very cool design! I might have to steal it for Vanye. CLine pants are hard because they're so hippy, and that non-waistband style c/b perfect! (Wish I'd seen it befor the last challenge. Would have been as era-appropriate as what I did...and better looking! :D)

    6. Vindalootoo~ I'm all about some manly tummies too ;) Were the pants you were talking about from the circus challenge? I fought with those darn things, lol. They wound up being faux button fly...and laced together in the back. I am a huge sucker for period clothes, and the steampunk world.

    8. Oh my gosh, the entries are AWESOME! Way to go, everyone!

I finally got my pictures up. :) This has been a really unusual project for me, but I loved it.

I have gotten almost everyone I know involved, in one way or another. I took my boss fabric shopping during lunches, I shared my sketching with my artistic brother, I talked sewing machine shop with my Mom, and my partner hiked all over parks with me looking for a suitable background for photos (which we didn't find, but didn't matter!). It's been great. :D

    10. I had to make it bare-ly there, it was ancient Greece! Most of the illustrations of him are with only a cape and hat.
Yes, that's my backyard; the gazebo is just out of camera range. It's so nice in the summer. And I think I have an oddball solution for the posting dilemma: I think I can post one image per edit! I'm not about to mess with the entry now, but I think it will work.
@elfmoon - weren't you having the same problem?

On a fun note, Monsieur Chocolat took advantage of the fact that I didn't automatically put the props away. He's been there all day!

I've been watching all the entries be posted - everything is so well done. The details on all of the entries overwhelm mine, and the specialty dolls just add to the characters they are mimicking. I can't choose one over another to be a favorite! Good luck everyone, you all did an excellent job!

    12. Wonderful work on everyone's finished costumes! I can't believe the detail and imagination in all the props, I'm in awe!
Unfortunately, although I have a 99% finished costume on my doll, there is just no way I can take any photos tonight. My apartment is a murky gloom even when the sun is blazing. So, I am either withdrawing at the 11th hour, or disqualified, I can't remember how it works. Nevertheless I will try to take some pics and post them in the sewing & crafting forum sometime.

    13. Wowee wowee wowee! So much wonderfulness!
solstelpa: DARN! That's so frustrating. Please let us know when you post them...
elfmoon: any reason they can't be posted here as well, just marked as "after deadline" or something? Just so people coming to the thread later would have everything in one place?
As for the new submissions...Wow...Could go on for pages.
Witchcraft: Wiishu says: See? Da's why Mama-Leto kep twyin' t'turn me into a girl!
She's dynamite on the halfshell. Definitely would not mess with her! Love the setting and how everything is camouflaged yet oddly visible. So appropriate!

ellipses: that red dress is gorgeous. Such beautiful work. And I love the cauldron! Such an important symbol and you did it justice. Would love to see before and after on that one.

Kitty Blue: so glad you found time and snuck in under the wire. He's a totally cool Hephaestus! Loving the techno-vibe.

Hobbywhelmed: He makes a very...wistful...Hades. I love it. And your explanation of his...underground exile... raises some intriguing questions in my head. I might have to write a book! :D And his "friend" is just too cute for words!

T4124: WOW! How cool is she? Stunningly different doll and beautifully utilized. Love those earthy colors on her. Amazing and unique look head to (beautifully shod) toe. Those sandals are fabulous!

Frenchaddict: He turned out GREAT! Loving the poppy! and all the embroidery is gorgeous (I so wish we could post larger pics so we could see the detail better!) And more great sandals!

Neo-ragdolls: OMG. Those wings are incredible! Are they paper? well-rolled sculpy? Whatever, they're magnificent. Love everything about this. The holster-style quiver is totally cool, esp considering there's not much room on his back! :D The gold details on the leather are a great design. And that glamour shot. Whoa! Knows how to rock those wings, doesn't he?

      I'm really glad I'm not a judge....

    17. Vindalootoo - thanks! It also raises the question about how he knew where to find Persephone - I have a feeling there was some collusion there! ("Get me away from my controlling mom! She wants to know what I'm doing every single second of the day!") I think I'm going to do a gallery shoot with his Mount Olympus "singles board" post.

I'm very impressed by the range of props created, and the wonderful outfits! I hadn't really checked out previously editions of this game, and didn't realize what greatness was being achieved!

I think I spent the most time figuring out how to make a 3-headed plushie. (The rabbit heads have clamps inside so you can open their mouths. The middle one is held open with a C-clamp. All 3 - they have stubby little bodies - are wired together so the heads can be repositioned, and they're also sewn into the large "pillow-like" body. The tail was created by massaging fiberfill and then tying and binding it at the base.) It came from seeing the observation that some representations of Cerberus mention "snakes" around the heads. Got the idea, tweren't no snakes, those were bunny ears--

    19. Fantastic work everyone! As a Greek geek (haha) I am loving this challenge! Everyone's interpretation of the deities is outstanding and even without reading you can pick out who is who by the symbols. Good luck to everyone!

hobbywhelmed here is a retelling of how Hades and Persephone "got together" if you were wondering. Unfortunately Hades was a brute and abducted Persephone but then you could always use your artistic license and have your guy tell his side of the story. There is always two! :)

    20. agreed everyone's props were fantastic!! My plan had been to make different pieces that Hephaestus's had made for the other gods to put around his workshop, but time was not on my side this past month. My goal for this challenge was actually to make this cool outfit for my doll who's character is similar to Hephaestus...he was shunned from his elven clan because of his disabled arms, he hooked up with a mechanically advanced race that in exchange for new arms he is forever indebted to build stuff for them, eventually his character is going to be worked into my photostories. Its always a fun time to create the themed outfits for the challenge, but equally just as fun to reuse them for your dolls character.

Sooo can't wait for the next already!! lol

    21. I snuck in just by the wire yesterday, right before bed, and didn't have time to post, but I'd like to congratulate everyone on their amazing works. It's really inspiring and humbling to see the breadth of talent among doll collectors and I feel very fortunate to be among all you lovely and creative people :aheartbea

Witchcraft: I adore all the detail you put into all the accessories you made! My particular favorite is the bear scull and pelt cloak... I can't believe you tanned the rabbit yourself :ablink:

LadyFeather: I have a particular soft spot for Hermes and you did him justice! I love, love, love the hat!! (I also prefer my Hermes clean shaven ;) )

Vindalootoo: Oh god the props :drool Your promise of sparkly goodness does not disappoint!! ...and just look at those sandals and greaves *so jealous*!

Kitty Blue: Just awesome!! I love the whole steampunk take which works absolutely brilliantly for Hephaestus!

Hobbywhelmed: There are no words to describe my joy whenever I look at wubby-Cerberus! ...those teeth :XD: Fantastic!

pd1223: I love the gold and white... and who can't marvel at that Barbie head! Brilliance I tell, sheer brilliance!

cynthiaforever: By far the cutest little Nike I've ever seen! I love all the little pleatings and drapings!!

Shrinkomatic: I adore your take on Eos (I mean, I totally sympathize with her reluctance to get up in the morning!!), and I love all the personality you imbued in her creation! ...and I agree, all of us should have a grasshopper butler to bring us coffee and comestibles in the morning!!

T4124: What an amazing Gaia!!! I love your colour scheme and the earthy feel you gave her, just fantastic!!

namaro: That beard... and those flippers... I just love him so much!!!

frenchaddict: A wonderfully macabre Morpheus! I'm not sure if that's your intention (please don't be offended, I think it's wonderful), but I like the almost deathly stillness, with his pale skin against the crimson. Very nice!

neo-ragdolls: I'm afraid I too will be jumping of the 'Oh my....Look at those Abs' bandwagon, but really :drool *Ahem* that aside, those wings... I wants sooo badly!!! Fantastic!

To quote Vindalootoo, I'm glad I'm not a judge!!

Thanks for a wonderful contest elfmoon!

    24. Hey guys! I can't believe how good all the entries are in this challenge, congrats to all! Wish I could have competed with all you talented people. I thought I would share my favourite things about all the finals:

ARTEMIS: the beautiful lush fur cloak and all those different hunting tools and weapons!
HESTIA: the construction of that bodice is just glorious, so many intricate pleats and folds
HERMES: the tortoise shell is beautifully sculpted, and the bird-booties are so darn cute
APOLLO: oh lord, I can't choose, there's so much! the blinding gold blingtastic-ness of his whole look I guess is my favourite thing, and the chariot (wow prop win)
HEPHAESTUS: I love how authentic and rugged the apron and leather accessories are. nice integration of steampunk and the doll's mech arms into the design!
HADES: a lovely dark and glimmering version of the king of the underworld, and the bunny-Cerberus is just. GENIUS.
ATHENA: I'm torn between the helmet and the Aegis as my fave detail, she looks overall just what I would imagine for Athena
NIKE: beautiful crisp clean drapery and wings, a simple idea but perfectly executed :)
EOS: lovely soft colour scheme and a sweet playful approach to the theme, and the grasshopper is a work of art all on its own!
GAIA: I love the richness of the velvet and printed fabrics and the moss "pauldrons", and... did you make those shoes?
POSEIDON: so cute and so funny :) the wetsuit and flippers together with the seaweedy beard made me giggle
MORPHEUS: love that deep romantic red and gold against his pale sleeping face, and the poppy is exquisite
EROS: beautiful construction and gold detailing on all the leather pieces, I love the delicate heart designs, so elegant! and of course the wings.

And if anyone would like to see a couple pics of my almost-entry, I've posted them in the "what are you sewing now" thread in sewing & crafting. I hope to do better next time! :(

    31. I really hope no-one minds me doing this just for this thread - but the gods and goddesses are all so stunning, and several people had commented that it would be great to see a family photo of them all together! So, forgive my basic Photoshopping, and please please bear in mind that the positioning is nothing to do with their godly status or costume design (more a question of individual photo resolution and composition) - and
      BEHOLD - MOUNT OLYMPUS!

    52. I bought one of those giant craft foam rolls with a lovely 40% off coupon. It worked out perfectly, some of the foam feathers curled exactly how I was hoping. And there is a twisted wire frame going up through the sides to help strengthen it and try to get them to curve over. The first wing side I finished turned out better than the second. The foam roll was at Michael's and was 36"X60" if I remember correctly.
