Project Runway ~ Game 19 ~ behold Mount Olympus!

Aug 13, 2013

    1. [IMG]PROJECT RUNWAY

      CHALLENGE 19

      BEHOLD MT OLYMPUS!
      CHALLENGE:
You have entered the realm of the Gods. Behold Mt. Olympus, rising majestically toward heaven in a billow of white clouds! Lush vineyards, fruit orchards, the purest and coolest of springs, wildlife in abundance, perfection in every aspect!
In the midstof this paradise lies a palace of epic proportions. White marble glistening in the sun, gold inlayed embellishments, huge airy rooms, larger than life stone statues in the gardens, and private, hidden courtyards.
Sights never seen by mortals, but this legacy is your birthright. You are a God!

From the list provided, chose the name of the Greek god/goddess you wish to represent. Choice is on a first-come, first-served basis. Once a name has been taken, you cannot also choose that name. When you post your entry, state which god/goddess you have picked.

In the event that all eleven names are taken and we have more designers wanting to participate, they may choose from a list of lesser gods/goddess, which will provided at that time.

A description of each god/goddess is given, including symbols/animals that are sacred to them. You will choose one symbol or animal and include it as an accessory to your costume. For this challenge only, you may make or purchase this accessory. If you choose to include other accessories, such as headpieces, pouches, etc., they must be handmade.

We are not looking for the traditional white togas. Use your imagination to create a costume that best suits your god/goddess and defines their personal attributes.

      JUDGING:
Entries will be judged on the following:
      Interpretation of the challenge theme
      Design Concept
      Accessories
      Aesthetics

      TIMELINE:

    6. Ever since the first mention of a mythological god theme for this contest, Mookie has been jumping around excitedly and chanting "I wanna be Thor. I wanna be Thor". Unfortunately, as a Norse god, Thor didn't make the list. I do have one MSD doll but she is totally unposeable and I don't know if I will work up the courage to attempt my first re-stringing in time. Since Mookie's costumes generally fall into the "cute" category, I'm thinking this challenge is not quite our thing. If there are any gods left to choose by the last day to enter, we will go for the "cute" god look. There are so many designers who can really run with this challenge and produce awesome outfits, we don't want to reserve any particular god and limit their choices.

      Design Details;
Here is my take on Artemis as the goddess of the hunt, wild animals and wilderness. She is wearing a simple doric chiton suitable for hunting in the thick forest. I chose greens and browns to help her camouflage into her surroundings. Not like the goddess of the hunt needs camouflage for a successful hunting trip.

Included in her accessories are a quiver bag made from leather strips and green flannel cloth, arrows made from dowel rods with different styled sculpty heads and real pheasant feather fletchings, one of her many beloved bows and her skinning knife also made from sculpty. She also has her crescent moon headpiece on (sculpty and braided waxed cotton string) and is toting a shed antler (painted sculpty) at her side she happened to find while tracking some deer. As the day grows chillier she has the pelt of a large bear (real rabbit pelt) she had slain years before which fastens around her shoulders with the bear's skull (painted sculpty) as a brooch. As she follows the tracks of a deer through the forest she comes upon the old stag (Breyer buck) browsing.

Everything but her wig and the stag were made by me. The rabbit pelt I tanned myself from one of my meat rabbits years ago so technically I made that also.

      Symbol: Hearth

      Inspiration:
For my interpretation of Hestia, I chose a fusion of new and old. She is and eternally virginal goddess in the Greek Pantheon, charged by Zeus keeping the Hearth of the Gods lit and burning and keeping the home of the gods warm and welcoming. I chose the deep wine red fabric to symbolize the fire she guards, sleek and alluring like the cut of her gown, one touch and you get burned... But my Hestia also half peplos of creamy white to symbolize her attachment to the home, security and the to serve as a reminder of the ancient traditions which she upholds. She wears the glittering crown of her godhood humbly upon her veiled head, a symbol of her eternal virginity.

My set is made of silks, satins, and rich warm fabrics, perhaps like those favoured by the gods, juxtaposed against the stark white of the walls and the earthen floor of the traditional Greek home.

I hope you enjoy the interpretation, enjoy!

Oh Mortals who roam the land, bend knee and rest at the hearth of Hestia, Goddess of the home.

      Materials
The red dress is made from a recycled skirt and embellished with gold sartouche. The white peplos and veil are made from some scrap crepe and embellished with more sartouche, some fancy lace, and some tiny golden sequins. Her hearth is made from a glass bowl, painted gold, then covered in clay (ARG!!), then painted with several layers of the sparkliest silver spray paint I could find ^^ Her crown is made from round textured gold beads and jump rings.

      Thanks for looking.

Yet again I cannot put up more than one picture so... this is a composite of all five images.

      DETAILS for my entry:
Hermes lesser known position was to lead the souls of the dead into the afterlife. If one were to believe in Greek gods, it would be expected that he appear as a god when collecting souls. I don't know about the older, bearded version, but a nice handsome mature gentleman would be acceptable, like my guy here.
I based my version on the depictions of Hermes on 6[SUP]th[/SUP] century BCE pottery; I feel that this is a more true idea of what they believed he was.
His feet were often shown with an ornamental bird around his ankles, giving him the wings he is attributed with. I used the white for when he was the god's messenger and the black for the more somber psychopomp role.
The staff he carried was nothing like the caduceus; it was two intertwining rods, some times they were snakes, that were used to close the eyes of the dead. I did not give him shoes since his ability to fly would be of more use since the soul would float in the air with him.
He would still carry his messenger bag, filled with information on the soul to be given to whoever was in charge of the afterlife area the soul qualified for. Greek afterlife was not all hell. Gods lived in heaven, all others went to the underworld. Only those truly pure would be allowed into heaven with the gods.
His sacred animals are the tortoise, the ram, and the hawk. Considering that he gutted the tortoise I donโ€™t see how it was sacred to him. I hope the hawk wasn't the bird wings, and I DON'T want to know about the ram at all.

EDIT: fixed the individual image problem. Now have five separate images.

      God du jour:
      Apollo!
      Krittur: deer

      My little new years Cupid:

      Entry:
Even gods have to start somewhere. Apollo, god of the sun, the arts, plague and healing didnโ€™t just jump into all these godly skills. This little Apollo-in-training has his sun chariot (complete with training wheel and shock-absorbing soft-wheels) his lyre (with sounding board aimed backward and in to protect the neighborsโ€™ ears) his bow (with butterfly arrows rather than plague-carrying mosquitos) and his sun halo/laurel wreath...tied with a bow, gift of his mortal Mom, Leto, who, frustrated with his tomboy twin, huntress Artemis, is doing her best to turn him into her pretty little girl.
His bow is (for no good reason whatsoever other than it looked cool when I was sculpting it) stylized feathers/wings and heโ€™s very proud that he can hold and draw it without any outside help! (But it was draw it or hold an arrow. He chose to hold the butterfly arrow) I justify the feathers because heโ€™s the patron god of herds and flocks...which I (very broadly) interpret as including chickens! :D
      [IMG]
In Rome, who adopted Apollo pretty much as is, malaria-bearing mosquitos were known as the arrows of Apollo. Mortal mama Leto isnโ€™t about to let her pretty little boy out with such nasty creatures...so she snuck butterflies into his quiver, (not to mention onto his greaves and arm-guards.) He doesnโ€™t care so long as everything shines and sparkles! His lyre is based on an ancient Mesopotamian style and tucks in very nicely under his arm. (I was a little surprised. Itโ€™s a great design!) It has his totem deer (in his case, a fawn) head and colored strings for this little musician-in-training.
This Wee-polloโ€™s crown incorporates both his sun-god aspect and his arts/laurel wreath aspect. Itโ€™s composed of layered ribbon and fabric with sculpy laurel leaves and a second hand earring supplied the sparklies. Undies are a must for Mama-Leto's little boy, and since he kept trying to swipe Papa's armor, Papa insisted he get his name on everything.
I couldn't possibly do Apollo without his sun chariot, but Uncle Helios isnโ€™t about to let this wild-child little heir out with the keys to the chariot quite yet. (No horses for him!) So...heโ€™s got his own training chariot that he dreams of one day driving across the sky. (Hopefully with horses and no training wheel)

History claims Apollo is the god of youth and beauty, of artists and poets, of the sun, plague and healing. After spending a month with this demanding little godling, Iโ€™ve decided History got it dead wrong. Apollo is, in truth, the god of toys (and sparklies!).

(Dear Judges, just because I didn't make it clear last time...I made everything, from his wig to his sandals. :D And thank you thank you thank you for choosing this topic. This was really, really fun!)

      God: Hephaestus
      [IMG]

      My Entry:
My adaptation of the God Hephaestus I went into a completely different direction and thought what if he were around in modern times, what would he wear, what genre..and I thought what better style with all the different things that Hephaestus made like automatons than "Steampunk". Symbols: Anvil and Hammer.

      Front:
I went with some pretty traditional blacksmithing clothing pieces with some non traditional details. Apron with front pocket and Leg coverings made out of scrap piece of burgundy leather form a purse I had purchased at a thrift store a while back. The strappping on the apron ties and headpiece were recycled from a leather belt.

      Back:
A better view of the striped pants with contrast leather pockets, unfortunetly I didn't get a good view of the front pockets which also were made in the same leather. The apron ties around the back as does the leg coverings have a strap of leather that attaches around his boots. And to keep his arms free to move around I chose to give him a black faux leather cincher.

      Detail 1:
A close up of his headpiece with his little magnifying glass monocle to get a closer at the finer details when he is working on his special projects. I'm usually not much for adding gears to my steampunk attire, but since Hephaestus did make automaton's and such I figured a few gears wouldn't hurt as details. Most photos and descriptions depict him with a full beard but I thought he should get up with the times and gave him a little faux fur goatee instead.
      Detail 2:
And of course what blacksmith and more importantly Hephaestus himself would be seen without his trustee symbols the Hammer and Anvil. Made out of a piece of scrap wood and foam.
      Glamour:
He is now ready to start working on his next project.

    16. OMG, what a perfect doll for Hephaestus! I can't wait to see what you do with this.

CJC and I were giggling over our pint-sized Apollo last night and came up with a crazy 21st century outfit. Not what I'm going to use here, but I might have to make it for him anyway. His sun chariot is a surfboard and he moonlights in a rockband at night. Probably not appropriate to post pic in this thread, but if you want a giggle, it's here.

Hmmm...site's slow. Sorry. But it occurs to me, he'd really need a little sun tat around his naval....Just sayin'...

    19. Can I say that I'd like to try this, and ask for Hades, even tho at the moment I'm at work and need to decide on which boy I want to use when I get home tonight?

Ok - this was a harder decision than I thought! I guess I'm going against type, with the younger version of Hades imagery--

Ok - I had basic ideas, and worse-than-basic sewing skills, so went for the concept of the young Hades, who got stuck with the Underworld for his realm. Went for a basic chiton style, with some tweaks. Technically, a lot of the shoulder fasteners from the historical Greek eras are said to look much like our present safety pins, but that just looked too funky, so I stitched. (Wouldn't be the first Project Runway (RL version) to sew an outfit ON the model!)

Went for somber, serious, and a touch of sadness - ok, depression at where he got to live. It's said he knew little of what went on above ground, unless people struck the ground while making their offerings and shouted their prayers or requests--

In line with that, I thought that before he realized that what he needed was a wife/woman/goddess company, Hades consoled himself with something else Of course, later on he got a dog, but in the beginning, he had a plushie wubby....

Oh - montage closeups - not that much to see, though:

      Design Details:

The design was based on how I interpreted Athena as the virgin goddess and at the same time, as a war goddess.
The colour palette plays around gold and white. I chose gold for her armor to signify divinity as a goddess and the white cloth symbolizes her purity.

The spear was made from balsa wood pole and board while the shield was made out of a foam board covered with gold metallic cloth.
The metal strips are taken from a discarded necklace.
The helmet was made from craft foam with wire inserts to hold its shape.

Everything, except for the sandals, the Medusa head /snakes and the owl, was handmade.

I hope you enjoy my interpretation and design for the goddess Athena :)

DIONYSUS: TAKEN God of Wine, Vines, Theater, and Fertility. The god himself is drawn in a chariot, usually by exotic beasts such as lions or tigers. He holds a fennel staff, tipped with a pine-cone and known as a thyrsus.

DEMETER: ~ TAKEN Goddess of the Earth, Grain, Fertility of the Field, and the Harvest. She is the goddess of the harvest, who presided over grains and the fertility of the earth.she presided also over the sanctity of marriage, the sacred law, and the cycle of life and death.

PERSEPHONE: ~ TAKEN Goddess of Springtime. Persephone was captured by Hades and tricked into eating seven seeds from a pomegranate, which ensured that for seven months of the year, she would be forced to stay in the Underworld. She is Hades's wife.
Charon - He is the ferryman of Hades who carries souls of the newly deceased across the rivers Styx and Acheron that divided the world of the living from the world of the dead. A coin to pay Charon for passage, usually an obolus or danake, was sometimes placed in or on the mouth of a dead person[SUP][1.[/SUP]
Eos - TAKEN The dawn goddess Eos was almost always described with rosy fingers or rosy forearms as she opened the gates of heaven for the Sun to rise. H er saffron-coloured robe is embroidered or woven with flowers. She is depicted as a beautiful woman, crowned with a tiara or diadem and with the large white-feathered wings of a bird.
Eros - TAKEN God of love, procreation and sexual desire. He is often dispicted with a bow and arrows,
and to be struck in the heart with one of arrows caused that person to fall instantly in love.
Gaia - TAKEN Goddess of the Earth, also known as Mother Earth. She was the goddess or personification of Earth. Gaia was the great mother of all: the primal Greek Mother Goddess; creator and giver of birth to the Earth.
Hecate - TAKEN is an ancient goddess, most often shown holding two torches or a key. She is variously associated with crossroads, entrance-ways, fire, light, the Moon, magic, witchcraft, knowledge of herbs and poisonous plants, necromancy, and sorcery.

    29. elfmoon I hope you don't mind but I can help people out with symbols of the lesser gods and goddesses as I minored in Greek mythology. Some of this is memory but most is a quick refresher from Goggle. I hope this can help some folks!

Eros- carried a bow with two arrows (one golden with the dove feathers that caused instant love and the second was made of lead and owl feathers which caused indifference); he can also be associated with bulls, serpents, lions and rams heads; he is often depicted as being blindfolded or blind.
Hecate- often associated with hounds (dogs), horses, sheep, owls, snakes, bats and boars; she also has the symbols of keys, torches, raisin and currant cakes, three-headed beasts, candles, masks, pumpkins and the number 3.
Demeter- often associated with cats, dogs, snakes, lizards, cranes and lions; her symbols are the cornucopia, torch, bread, honey, sheaves of wheat, acorns, poppies and sunflowers.
Persephone- often associated with bats, monkeys, parrots and rams; symbols may include wreaths of flowers worn on the head, reeds, torches, water (typically waterfalls, rivers and springs but for PR I think water in general would suffice), pomegranates and crystals.
Gaia- often associated with the earth (obviously); her symbols are a bit harder but you could use the sickle, flowers, trees and snakes.
Dionysus- often associated with wine; his symbols are grapes, flutes, chalices (goblets or fancy cups) and thyrsos (wooden stick wrapped in vines and leaves).
Eos- often associated with grasshoppers and her symbol was the saffron plant.
Charon- often associated with death and ferry boats (not typical modern ferry boats); his symbols are the pole or boatman's oar, mallet, axe and double-headed hammer.
Morpheus- often associated with poppies; symbols include wings, bags of sand and rubies.
Nike- often associated with wings; her symbols include olive and laurel branch crowns, torches, golden sandals, palm branches and sashes.
Circe- often associated with wild beasts especially the boar, lion and wolf; her symbols include wand, cauldron and magic herbs like nightshade, mandrake and primrose.
Nemesis- often associated with griffons; her symbols include wings, whips, wheels, swords, rudder, balance and cubit.
Akeso- often associated with snakes; her symbols include medical tools and healing herbs. *Sorry there isn't much more!*
Iris- always associated with rainbows; her symbols include pitchers full of nectar or water, the iris flower (which she is named after), golden wings and herald's rod.

Hello all! Updated: Pictures for submission.

Here's my simple take for my little girl as Nike, the Winged Goddess of Victory :) It's a simple outfit with almost no accessories. I decided to leave her golden shoes out I made for her out because it was too badly done T.T

It's a white / pink little toga that I made with some satin. The foldings and drapings were the part that took me the most time.. A button is made where the toga meets (at the chest area).
Nike has wings with her, and I bought these tiny wings while ago :). Head accessory is made using some beads and wire! The pink ribbons came originally on the Papi wig that she is wearing :).

    38. You are welcome elfmoon and ellipses and thank you! I've spent the last 13 years studying the ancient Greeks so I am a bit of a nerd when it comes to them. I'd be happy to help add onto any of the major gods and goddesses if people would like to PM me; if that is okay with elfmoon and the judges first though?

    41. I've been watching - and admiring - the PR threads for a while now, but as a very inexperienced seamstress been too shy to participate! But this challenge is fab - and the description of the dawn goddess Eos with her rosy fingers and forearms made me think of a certain - completely clothes-free - member of the resin clan, who will at last end up with something to wear!
elfmoon, are anthros alright to enter? If not, please do feel free to delete / ignore this entry. If yes:

edited to add chosen symbol - grasshopper / cricket

Finished my first PR challenge ever - yay!

Eos, the goddess of the dawn, is here in a non-traditional outfit - I imagined her as a very reluctant early riser (somewhat like me!), who would probably be hanging out in her goddessly nightie and dressing gown...
This outfit does draw on her traditional description with a saffron robe (yellow nightie - also rather scanty here, perhaps because of her legendary penchant for young men!). Her robe was described as embroidered with flowers - which she has in good measure here! She was described as rosy fingered (or armed) and I've tried to use a palette of colours representing the pastel colours of a sunrise. Her symbol was the grasshopper, featured here, with a couple of rising sun motifs thrown in for good measure...

Front view - in nightie and dressing gown, taking pet grasshopper out for a walk at daybreak (I imagine her bag contains a grasshopper pooper-scoop!):

      Back view

Details 1 - some of the outfit details (her headband also serves as a makeshift eye mask when needing to sleep during the day!)

Details 2 - featuring her godessly slippers and tote bag - and of course her pet grasshopper (made from scraps of felt and some flower wire)

And finally her glamour shot - well, getting up at daybreak isn't much fun for anyone! Good job she's got her grasshopper butler and a nice strong cup of coffee by the bed!

    46. Witchcraft ~ Posting symbols for the lesser god/goddess was very helpful, especially since I couldn't find them. I just meant that if anyone wanted to know more about the deities, such as their relationships to each other, or stories of what they did, they should PM you. We only want to post what's necessary for the challenge.

And I'd like to choose Gaia, please. :)

      Entry:

I imagine Gaia, the Goddess who gave birth to the earth, ocean, and dozens more, kept getting knocked up for a reason. Mainly, because she's a knockout! My Gaia has curves in all the right places, and a smile that makes everyone feel loved.

Her 'symbol' is the earth itself, and she carries it with her everywhere (on her shoulders).

I made her shoes in addition to her outfit. :)

    54. If you should add any further gods/goddesses, or if anyone would like more information on their choices, theoi.com is a wonderful site. As far as I know it is the most informative site on the Web for the Greek gods. The home page has an alphabetical listing under the top banner. Just click on the letter of your god or goddess, find the link for her/him on the upcoming page and you will find all the information there is.

      Symbol chosen: Trident

I was hoping to take some new pix for his entry, but we will have to re-use the jester pic.
OK - Entry time. Since most of the pictures I found on line pictured Poseidon naked, or nearly naked with just a strategically placed drape of cloth, our version is our interpretation of traditional and modern. Mookie wears a satin robe w/glitzy trim as befitting his divine status but underneath he wears a wet suit w/flippers for comfort and ease of movement in his watery world. I kept the long white hair and beard that seemed to be in most of the Poseidon pictures.

    58. Like Dodona said theoi.com is a wonderful website to check for more information. However I sometimes find it is doesn't go far enough into symbols for the lesser deities which is necessary for this challenge. Just as an example I recently helped ellipses out with her choice of Hestia and theoi.com only listed the donkey as her symbol. Hestia has many symbols. A simple Google search and some digging can really help out with the lesser deities which can be hard to find for. But it is a worthwhile website for sure and yes; definitely the best IMO! :)

Now that I am home I will get right onto symbols for the newly added goddesses. I will just add them onto my post on page 2 to keep it neat for you elfmoon! :)
