    2. Well I've got a progress pic of sorts (sorry for the boobs)

Odellete wants her gown to be suitable for a formal spring garden party. My planned design includes an overgown that consists of an underbust bodice connected to a bustled skirt - pink lined with green, so the green should peek out at the collar and in the pleats of the bustle. I want to embroider the edges of the skirt (we'll see how that goes!). The underdress will be simpler, maybe something sheer with multiple layers for opacity and fluffiness, like chiffon.

I haven't picked up my fabric yet, but I know what I'm getting. I saw it on a previous trip to the fabric store. But I've started drafting the pattern for the bodice. I mocked it up in masking tape (as you can see in the pic) and cut along the planned seamlines. Next I'll trace the pieces out onto paper, try to get them symmetrical, then cut a test bodice out of muslin and see how it comes out.

    3. It's always interesting to see how people draft their patterns, since there's several different methods.

      Your planned dress sounds beautiful!

    6. taking the challenge to stretch myself to heart, i decided to try to incorporate some of my art quilting into the dress. the main fabric i will be using is a handmade quilted silk, made of layers of point d'esprit netting, organza, and dyed silk fibers. (apparently part of the challenge will be figuring out not just how to make it but how to photograph it ) here is a glimpse of the first piece

however right now the design is somewhat fluid, so i'll have to see which of them actually end up in the final design ;)

    8. Wow! I don't quilt so I'd never heard of art quilting.

My only experience was a doll quilt I made. The fabric was a bunny print. I didn't even cut it into squares. I just stuck a piece of batting in between the front and back layers and sewed squares with my machine! LOL!

    9. Here is a work in progress pic! Not much to show yet; the top and bottom hem aren't even finished but for materials I used about a half yard of antique green velvet curtain that I bought as a remnant from a consignment store. The plan is lots of bead work and a few feathers.

    11. I found some wonderful materials and will post pictures as soon as I can. Also I was describing the outfit I wanted to a friend of mine, and next thing I know she walks up and hands me a drawing of what I had described. I can't draw very well so I'm hopin to post hers as concept art.

    20. :...(Waaaa! I'm pulling my hair out on this one. I had a much easier idea in mind when I started, but then I got this "brainstorm" to do someithing more complicated...only it has turned out to be way more complicated than I thought.:sweat I wanted to do one of those slinky, tight-fitting Hollywood type dresses from the 1960s with the big flair at the bottom and a slight train. I thought how hard could that be, right? Well, first off, it took seven (yes 7!!!) pattern pieces to get it to fit right. Then I kept under-guesstimating how big the bottom flared portion of those 7 pieces needed to be.:doh (Had to redo them like 3 times to get enough circumference.) And I way underestimated the amount of fabric that big bottom flair and train would require:? which meant I had to go back to the fabric store to buy more fabric for both the lining and the outer dress. Then I've also had to cope with my Anson's odd artsy body (way big hips and tiny round boobies spaced far apart.) I keep telling myself that once I have this all worked out, I'll be able to use the pattern to make her other dresses down the line with just minor alterations. That's the only thing that's kept me going at this point. I just wanted to whine some here and let everyone know by my example that while it's not always easy, you can accomplish your sewing goals if you just stick with it and don't give up. (That's what I'm telling myself anyway!);)

    21. exactly right! I was doing a jacket (for something else) and it took me 5 mock ups to get it right...try, try and try again :) The men's jacket I'm doing for this challenge I've only had to do a few minor adjustments...men can be easier for tailored jackets, no boobs to deal with..lol. Now to actually get to work on the final garment...hopefully this weekend...eeek cutting it close again this time. My whole weekend was spent pretty much sick so wasn't up for any challenges...but once I get a few other things done tonight, but to working on my boys spiffy formal attire!

    23. FloraLaguna, I'm sure elfmoon would have no problem with that what so ever. ABJD's are designed to have changes in wigs and eyes, etc. As long as you are using the same doll as your model, normal changes such as hair color should not pose any problem. After all, having our models look their best is part of the challenge.:)

    25. FloraLaguna ~ That would be fine. You want your model to look her best!

When I was in high school I used to bleach my hair blond. That was before they had all the fancy hair coloring products they have now. My Dad was complaining about the bleach smell. He said the odor was stinking up the whole house.

My grandmother looked at him and said, "the Bible says a woman's hair is her crowning glory, and if it don't glorify you one color, change it to a color that does!"

He never said another word! LOL!

    26. glad to hear that. it never even occurred to me to ask. i had planned all along to change ember's hair since her hairstyle is much to casual for a formal gown. (i was just going to "send" her to a beautician for a color change and extensions )

    27. Love it!!! XD I tried to dye my hair green once in highschool, but I didn't bleach it first....yeah...looked like I dipped my hair in mossy muddy water.

Bailey has a new faceup so he looks a little different too. And I've been struggling with the kilt and hose. I'm worried it won't be as snazzy as a fancy suit. :/

It is a honey-gold atlas fabric. Very thin and slick and I cant do a clean seam by machine so I will be sew by hand -)

    33. SoiKa, I love using recycled fabrics.:) In fact, I'm currently working with some recycled colored lace (trying to sew mirror imaged pieces into geometic shapes) to work with my design. And thanks so much for telling us about your 9 pattern pieces...now I don't feel so bad about the 7 it's taking me to construct my gown (well 14 really, since it's fully lined.):sweat

    35. evening gowns tend to have more pieces cause they are more likely form fitting. i have 7 in the bodice (plus 7 lining) and eight in the skirt(s) so far. and i still don't have the collar/sleeves  but it is coming along. i managed to finish the skirt yesterday and am now trying to get the collar and sleeves right before i can add the lining. i had to change my design when the fabric i intended to use on top turned out to be impossible to ruffle properly, so i either have to use something else or change the design. my design method tends to be rather fluid and seldom comes out like my original plan :) oh well :shrug

    37. The materials I had for my kilt didn't work(didn't plan on the material having as much give as it did or it not lining up properly). :( I think I'm going to have to fall back onto making a suit. I had a hard time finding tartan material in scale and I don't have the money to try and find another tarten. I still want to make him a kilt but I think it's going to have to be an outfit I make after the challenge. Is it alright if I have to change my design so late?

    42. I just finished mine too.:) I'm very happy to say that this particular challenge was truly wonderful for me because I learned a brand new skill...making my own appliques from repurposing bits and pieces of old lace. I found an old sheer camisole (probably from the 80s) with a bold lace around the hem (a little less than a yard of it.) By cutting pieces of the lace design and putting the small pieces together in mirror images and then connecting sections of that together, it made really nice appliques.
